Explaining Mastodon and Which Apps to Use

0

A fresh wave of people have moved to Mastodon. This follows Twitter blocking people posting about other social media accounts. It’s truly wild to see some of the things Musk has signed off for. But oddly enough, people are trading Musk to Tusk, and moving to Mastodon. But what the bloody hell is it?

What is Mastodon?

Mastodon is a free, open-source social networking service. It is similar to other social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, but it is decentralized, meaning that it is not controlled by a single entity or corporation. Instead, Mastodon is made up of a network of servers, or “instances,” which are operated by different organizations or individuals. Each instance has its own community and rules, and users can choose which instance they want to join.

Mastodon is built on the concept of “federated social media,” which means that users on different instances can communicate with each other and share content across the network. This allows for greater freedom of expression and privacy, as users are not subject to the same centralized policies and algorithms that govern other social media platforms.

Mastodon has a strong focus on community and inclusivity, and it has a number of features that make it popular with users who want an alternative to mainstream social media. It is also used by organizations and individuals who want to have more control over their online presence and data.

No, explain Mastodon to me like I’m 5

Ok. Mastodon is like a big neighbourhood where everyone has their own house. Some houses are really big and have lots of people living in them, and some houses are small and only have a few people.

Each house has its own rules about what people can do and say inside, just like each family has their own rules about what’s okay and what’s not okay in their own home. Some houses might be really strict and only let people say certain things, while other houses might be more relaxed and let people say pretty much whatever they want.

Mastodon is a place where you can go to meet new people and make friends, just like in a real neighbourhood. You can also share things you like, like pictures or stories, just like you might show your friends something cool you found in your own house.

The cool thing about Mastodon is that it’s not just one big neighbourhood – it’s lots of smaller neighbourhoods all connected together. So if you don’t like the rules in one house, you can go to another one and find a place that’s more your style. It’s like having lots of different neighbourhoods all in one place!

I’ve already written a guide to help you navigate the Irish Mastodon neighbourhood.

Best apps for Mastodon

Because there’s no one single company managing the entire Mastodon experience, there’s also no real single app to recommend. But I can recommend one particular approach. It’s called the PWA.

Mastodon PWA

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a type of website that can act like a regular app on your phone or computer. This means that you can use it even when you’re not connected to the internet.

PWAs are also designed to be faster and more reliable than regular websites. They can load really quickly, even on slow internet connections, and they don’t crash as much as regular websites do.

One way that PWAs are different from regular apps is that they don’t have to be downloaded from an app store like the App Store or Google Play. Instead, you can just go to a PWA website on your phone or computer and install it directly from there. This makes it easier to get and use PWAs, especially if you don’t have a lot of space on your phone or computer for regular apps.

Mastodon comes in a PWA. This means you simple add the website to your home screen on iPhone or Android and you’re done. The best part is this gives access to the Federated Timeline. This is a combined feed of all Mastodon neighbourhoods not available in the official Mastodon app.

Mastodon App

The official Mastodon app is pretty polished and has most of the latest features. However, the lack of a Federated Timeline is a real shame. Still, this is the best app for most regular users who really like their own neighbourhood.

Tusky

This is a free, open-source app for Android devices that provides a clean and user-friendly interface for accessing Mastodon. It has a number of features, including the ability to post, interact with other users, and manage multiple accounts.

Amaroq

This is a free app for iOS devices that offers a similar feature set to Tusky, with a focus on a sleek and intuitive design. It also includes support for multiple accounts and push notifications.

Mast

This is a free, open-source app for iOS and Android devices that provides a feature-rich experience for accessing Mastodon. It includes support for multiple accounts, push notifications, and a customizable interface.

Halcyon

This is a paid app for iOS and Android devices that offers a stylish and intuitive interface for accessing Mastodon. It includes support for multiple accounts and a number of customization options.

Should you switch to Mastodon?

Whether or not you should switch to Mastodon depends on your specific needs and preferences. Mastodon can be a good alternative to mainstream social media platforms if you value privacy, community, and inclusivity, and if you want to have more control over your online presence and data. It is also a good choice if you are interested in participating in a decentralized, federated social media network.

However, Mastodon may not be the best choice for everyone. It may not have all of the features or functionality that you are looking for in a social media platform, and it may not have as large of a user base as other platforms.

Ultimately, the decision to switch to Mastodon (or any other social media platform) should be based on your individual needs and priorities. It might be helpful to try out Mastodon and see how it compares to your current platform. In my opinion, Mastodon is growing quickly as people feel pushed from Twitter. It’s an interesting “farmers market” approach to social media which appeals to many.

Is Apple TV Worth It?

A while back I made a leap I never expected to make. I moved to iPhone. With that move came a free trial of Apple TV+. There’s a good chance some new iPhones will fall into new hands in the coming weeks and many will be left asking “is Apple TV+ worth it?”. I’m going to say yes. Here’s why and some suggestions for what to watch.

What is Apple TV+?

Apple TV+ is a streaming service operated by Apple that offers original television programs, films, and documentaries. It was launched in November 2019 and is available on various devices, including Apple devices (such as iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs), smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles. It’s not limited to Apple product owners.

In addition to its original programming, Apple TV+ also offers access to a library of licensed content from other studios and networks. The intention was for Apple TV+ to become a one-stop shop for all.

Users can subscribe to the service on a monthly basis for a fee and can access the content through the Apple TV app on their device.

How much does Apple TV+ cost?

Apple TV+ costs €6.99 per month. It’s among the cheaper streaming services on the market. With the likes of Disney+ and Netflix pricing starting at €8.99 per month

One massive consideration is Apple One. Apple One lets you bundle together Apple products like Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple Arcade and iCloud. This bundling of products together is great if you’re fully bought into the Apple ecosystem. You get all of Apple’s apps and services, starting from just €16.95. That’s good value if you already have cloud storage and a music streaming platform.

Not sure? There’s a trial too.

Apple TV+ trial

If you want to try Apple TV+, there are plenty of options. If you’ve just bought a new Apple product, you could be eligible for a 3-month trial. Otherwise, you get one week free to binge as much content as possible.

If you want to try Apple One, you get to sample all of Apple’s services for 1-month. So, rather than asking me if it’s worth it – you can check for yourself! But now, for my own opinion.

Is Apple TV+ worth it?

Yes. Apple TV+ is worth €6.99 per month. The service doesn’t have anywhere near the volume of content that Netflix or Disney+ has to offer. Instead, Apple has focused on quality not quantity. This is great for two reasons.

One, you can binge most of the good stuff on a trial or just wait for it all to be out and subscribe for one month to watch everything.

Two, you don’t have to spend hours scrolling through content in the hope you find something. There’s either something to watch or there’s not. It’s that simple.

But what’s on Apple TV+ that’s worth watching?

Best movies on Apple TV+

First up is original movies and documentaries made by Apple especially for Apple TV.

The Banker

This drama film tells the true story of two African American entrepreneurs who hire a working-class white man to front their business in order to circumvent discrimination in the 1950s and 1960s. It stars Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie, and Nicholas Hoult and received positive reviews for its performances and historical depiction.

Greyhound

This war film stars Tom Hanks as a U.S. Navy captain leading a convoy of allied ships across the Atlantic during World War II. It received praise for its action scenes and Hanks’ performance.

Beastie Boys Story

This documentary tells the story of the influential rap group Beastie Boys and features interviews with members Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz. It received positive reviews for its engaging and nostalgicically-driven narrative.

Finch

Another Hanks’ movie. This time, Hanks plays an eponymous engineer creating a robot to take care of his dog. The credits lists just three names, one of which is the dog.

It’s a bit like I Am Legend meets Wall E or something. But very entertaining.

Best TV shows on Apple TV+

While there are a few good movies, TV shows is where Apple TV+ excels. This makes sense too has shows can be broken up into episodes and seasons – better for retaining subscribers. Here’s the best.

Bad Sisters

Small bit of bias here. Bad Girls is filmed in Dublin and Wicklow. It tells the story of 4 sisters trying to kill the husband of a 5th sister. I’ve never hated anyone quite like the husband. The show will pull plenty of strange feelings out of you.

Also, if you live in Dublin or Wicklow, you get the play the “oh that’s over there by the thing”.

The Morning Show

This drama series stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell and follows the personal and professional lives of the hosts of a popular morning news show during a sexual abuse scandal.

It received positive reviews for its strong performances and timely themes around big figures being involved in sexual abuse allegations and convictions.

Mythic Quest

This comedy series set in the world of video game development stars Rob McElhenney and Charlotte Nicdao. It’s full of clever writing and boasts a strong cast.

Watch out for the Covid special they did. One of the few brilliant takes on Zoom episodes I’ve seen.

Ted Lasso

This comedy series stars Jason Sudeikis as an American football coach hired to coach a professional soccer team in England. The show is a so different to anything I expected it to be. It’s heartwarming and humorous, diverse and not afraid to portray cultural differences.

Slow Horses

Slow Horses is Apple’s adaption of a novel by Mick Herron about a group of misfit MI5 agents working in the agency’s Slough House, a place for employees who have made mistakes or been demoted.

The main character is Jackson Lamb, a gruff and irascible former field agent who now heads the Slough House team. The series follows the team as they investigate a kidnapping.

It’s the typical story, as they confront their own personal demons and confront the bureaucracy and politics of the intelligence agency. There’s no shortage of clever plot twists.

For All Mankind

Oddly Amazon Prime launched with an alternate history series, and Apple followed suit with For All Mankind.

“For All Mankind” is a science fiction television series created by Ronald D. Moore especially for Apple TV+. The show is set in an alternate history where the Soviet Union landed the first manned mission on the moon in 1969, leading the United States to redouble its efforts in the space race.

The series follows the lives of a group of astronauts, engineers, and their families as they work to maintain American dominance in space and explore the solar system. It explores themes of national pride, the personal and professional sacrifices of the space program, and the impact of technological advancements on society.

It’s an amazing tale of “what if”. I loved this because once upon a time when studying history I literally wanted to write about theoreitcal history but I wasn’t allowed.

That’s probably enough to show you that, yes, Apple TV+ is worth a punt. If noting else, give the free trial a go.

Is IPTV Legal? Dodgy Boxes in Ireland

0

In my lifetime, I’ve seen TV evolve quite a bit. Glenroe came on of a Sunday night on a rented TV through an old copper aerial. Eventually, my family got Sky. Felt really fancy before realising there was a load of nonsense on most channels. Nowadays, most of my TV viewing is on streaming services like RTÉ Player or Netflix. I’ve pretty much cut the cord as the saying goes.

If you still watch television through a cable or satellite provider, what alternatives are there? What if you could get your TV fix without having to pay a monthly bill?

Enter IPTV. IPTV is a type of streaming service that delivers television programming over the internet. It’s similar to other popular streaming services like Netflix and Paramount+. IPTV, like torrent file sharing, is completely legal, but it can be used to breach copyright. Read on to find out more about the legality of IPTV in Ireland.

What is IPTV and how does it work

IPTV, or Internet Protocol Television, is changing the way we consume television content. By utilising an IP network, such as broadband or the internet, IPTV transports digital television data to users in a method much different than cable or satellite TV. TV shows and movies can be watched on demand or in “time-shifted” playback mode.

This means that you can watch your favorite show whenever and however you want! With interactive elements like video on demand and pause-live-TV all accessible from the same interface, it’s no wonder IPTV is quickly becoming a popular choice for television viewers. Are you ready to make the switch?

When it comes to IPTV in Ireland, there is a lot of confusion about its legality and for good reason! IPTV stands for ‘Internet Protocol Television’ and is the delivery of television content over the internet. The big question though: is it legal? In most cases, the answer is yes, but with some important guidelines to adhere to.

For instance, viewing or streaming content without permission from copyright holders or broadcasters is not allowed. Additionally, if IPTV services you use require extra devices or subscriptions then this could raise some red flags. It’s also important to make sure that service providers registered in Ireland are being used as well as checking out any terms of service stated in the fine print. Taking all these measures into account can ensure an enjoyable, safe and legal IPTV experience in Ireland.

But if you are using IPTV streaming services like All 4, you’re using a totally legal IPTV streaming service.

If you’re paying “some guy” in a Telegram chat for access to every channel and movie under the sun, chances are it’s not legal.

The dangers of using dodgy IPTV boxes

IPTV boxes are becoming increasingly popular and convenient, but they come with their own set of risks. Many of them rely on third-party developers and can be from questionable sources, leading to viruses and malware which can affect your device or network. There’s the potential for watching pirated content, with individuals and companies possibly violating copyright law – meaning any money saved is likely not worth the penalty you might have to pay.

Even worse, some countries have outlawed IPTVs entirely! If you’re going to “get in on the action” as it were, ensure you educate yourself thoroughly on the laws surrounding online streaming devices before making any moves. Hey, knowledge is power and maybe avoiding a hefty fine while making sure your device stays safe and secure is something we all want!

Alternatives to illegal IPTV

With the increasing popularity of illegal IPTV, many people are searching for a better way to watch their favorite shows and movies. Luckily, there are a number of legal alternatives available. Subscription streaming services like Prime Video and Netflix provide hundreds of movies at low monthly rates. RTÉ Player and All 4 are also amazing services with no barrier to entry. But remember, for the RTÉ Player you’re supposed to have a TV license.

Charity shops have rakes of DVDs if you want to go “old school”. With so many easy solutions out there, there’s no excuse not to find fun, legal ways to watch movies or TV shows without resorting to illegal IPTV.

So there you have it, everything you need to know about IPTV in Ireland. Remember, if something seems too good to be true then it probably is. Stay safe and legal by avoiding dodgy IPTV boxes.

Disposable Vaping Litter Problem: How to get rid of vapes

0

This article is absolutely not intended to encourage or promote the use of tobacco products. As the author, I’m shocked that disposable vapes are a thing at all so this is about education. Smoking any tobacco product increases the risk of lung cancer and using a vape makes you look really uncool.

You’re allowed to hold an opinion on things. You might think vaping is silly, you might think it’s cool. But I would like to think we can all agree that the sale of disposable vapes in Ireland is a shocking development.

What are disposable vapes?

Vaping is when someone uses a special kind of device called a vape to breathe in a vapour that contains a special liquid called e-juice. Disposable vapes are electronic cigarettes that are pre-filled with e-liquid. They are designed to be used for a limited amount of time before they are discarded.

They are called “disposable” because they are not meant to be refilled or recharged. When vapes first came onto the market, they were rechargeable and refillable. They were designed to be bought and reused. Vaping, the relatively modern alternative to smoking now has a very recent disposable alternative too.

These are designed to be thrown away after the e-liquid has been used up. Disposable vapes are typically small, lightweight, and easy to use, making them a popular choice for people who are new to vaping or who want a convenient way to vape on the go. They are available in a variety of flavours and nicotine strengths. They’re also often significantly cheaper up-front than rechargeable vapes.

How are disposable vapes constructed?

Disposable vapes are typically made up of a battery, heating element, and e-liquid chamber, all packaged into a single unit. The exact manufacturing process can vary depending on the specific brand and model of disposable vape.

Some disposable vapes are made using injection molding, while others may be assembled by hand. In general, the goal of the manufacturing process is to create a convenient and easy-to-use device that allows the user to inhale vaporized e-liquid.

The reason for this article is the vape’s battery. Typically, you’ll find lithium-ion batteries inside a disposable vape. The battery in a disposable vape is typically not rechargeable and is designed to last for a certain number of puffs before it runs out of power and the device becomes unusable.

This leads to the biggest issue that disposable vapes bring; electronic waste.

A new world of waste

Disposing of disposable vapes

The actual lifespan of a disposable vape will vary depending on a number of factors. For example, what size is the vape, the type and strength of the e-liquid it contains, and how often it is used.

On average, a disposable vape will last for a few hundred puffs before the battery runs out and the device becomes unusable. Some disposable vapes may last for a few days or more, while others may only last for a few hours of continuous use. It’s important to read the packaging or instructions that come with the disposable vape to get an idea of how long it is intended to last.

When the vape is finished, you shouldn’t simply throw it in the bin. Nor should you chuck it on the street. I live in Dublin, and I can tell you people need to hear that.

Should you remove the vape battery?

No. Jesus no. Just no.

Lithium-ion batteries do not like being pierced. Taking apart your disposable vape would lead to a fairly decent chance you’d puncture the battery. And then this would happen.

Bring it to a WEEE dropoff point

The simplest thing to do is get your vape to a WEEE dropoff point. That thing you’re sucking on is an electronic device. Anything with a plug or battery falls under the umbrella of products that WEEE applies to.

By bringing your old disposable vapes to a WEEE point or centre, you’re once again looking slightly cooler by reducing the amount of electronic waste ending up in the wrong place. You know, the street or general landfill.

Just make sure it’s totally dead before sorting it out.

Are Dehumidifiers Worth It?

0

If you live in an area with high humidity, you’ve probably considered buying a dehumidifier. Irish homes are unfortunately known for mould, but are dehumidifiers worth the investment? We’re not a great auld nation for buying into ideas like this, but I’ve been running one for a few months now.

Here’s a look at what dehumidifiers do, how they can improve your quality of life, and whether they’re worth the price tag.

What does a dehumidifier do?

A dehumidifier in your home can be an excellent addition for many reasons. Not only does it reduce the number of airborne allergens like dust mites and mould, but it also prevents environmental damage like peeling paint and rotten wood, caused by excess moisture in the air

It’s essential to purchase a unit that is specially designed for your area, as this ensures that it will provide the precise level of humidity needed in your space. Additionally, having a dehumidifier can make it easier to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout your house since cold air holds more moisture than hot air.

Therefore, having one in your home can help you create an environment with proper temperature control and clean air – which should come as no surprise when you consider all its benefits!

One massive benefit I found from using a dehumidifier is the dramatic reduction in the time clothes take to dry. It makes a lot of sense of course. Less moisture in the air means clothes dry faster. Let’s look more at how these machines work.

How a dehumidifier works

A dehumidifier works by taking the air in your home and passing it through a cooling coil which condenses the moisture. It’s just like moisture on an icy glass of water! The condensed water droplets then flow into a collection tray. Depending on the model, this then either drains away or stays in the unit until you can dispose of it.

This process removes excess humidity from the air and creates a much more pleasant living environment. For those of us who live in a humid climate, owning a dehumidifier can significantly improve our day-to-day lives – no more wondering why you feel so stuffy!

How long before a dehumidifier starts to work?

It can take up to two weeks of running for a dehumidifier to become perfectly in sync with your home. It often depends on the size of your home and the capacity of your machine. Once it’s up and running, you just need to remember to empty the reservoir.

The benefits of using a dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers are a great tool for improving health and well-being in the home. High levels of humidity can lead to health complaints such as allergies, sinus headaches, breathing problems, and asthma attacks.

By reducing the humidity with a dehumidifier, these health issues will improve – especially if you’re prone to allergies or suffer from a mould sensitivity.

I would wager that most people in Ireland have lived in at least one home with mould issues they turned a blind eye to.

Not only will this help create a healthier space overall, but it will also potentially means less money spent on trips to the doctor or store-bought medicines. Dehumidifiers are wiser health-wise (and wallet-wise) way to go!

Things to consider before buying a dehumidifier

Before deciding to purchase a dehumidifier, there are some important considerations to keep in mind.

Initially, the cost of the actual purchase should be taken into account. Some expensive models can break the bank. Not only is it expensive to buy one, but can be expensive to run too! In other words, don’t forget about the long-term energy costs associated with running a dehumidifier.

I’ve been running the MeacoDry Arete One 10L Dehumidifier and Air Purifier in-one. I’m happy with it. It’s set to maintain a level of humidity in the home and does so. It’s not running constantly either. After initially getting the humidity right in the house, now it just turns on and maintains the level when it has to.

A basic rule of thumb for efficiency: look for models that have a reasonably good energy rating if possible. Similarly, consider the type of unit required, since various units are better suited for different spaces (e.g., small rooms vs giant living spaces). Also, ensure you read reviews on different models beforehand so you find out what others say who might have purchased and used them before. I can personally vouch for the Meaco I’m testing.

How to use a dehumidifier effectively

Using a dehumidifier effectively can help reduce the amount of excess moisture in your home that can lead to an uncomfortable and unhealthy atmosphere. Setting the humidity level is key – you want humidity to be around 30-50 per cent relative in order to ensure an optimal environment.

This prevents condensation as well as mould and mildew growth, odours, and even problems with static electricity. Try to stick to one setting for humidification; having the levels frequently change between too high and too low disrupts humidity and makes the dehumidifier’s job more difficult. With proper maintenance, using a dehumidifier can make your facilities more comfortable, making indoor spaces healthier and allowing you to breathe easier.

If you have asthma, allergies, or other respiratory problems, using a dehumidifier can significantly improve your breathing and overall health. If you don’t have any health issues, a dehumidifier can still prevent them by keeping the air in your home clean and free of mould spores and dust mites. You might also want to check out our review of Airthings to learn even more about the air in your home.

We hope this article has been helpful in deciding whether or not you need a dehumidifier. If you still have questions, feel free to reach out to us on Instagram – we’re happy to help!

Tips for Buying a Drone in Ireland

0

Puppies and drones. Two things that aren’t just for Christmas. Both need a lot of mature and responsible attention too. If you’re thinking about buying a drone, for yourself or someone else, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Here are some tips to help you choose the right drone for your needs.

Check Irish Laws

The Irish Aviation Authority clarified that Ireland is operating under European drone laws. That means all drones weighing over 250g OR drones with cameras must be registered. This means if you’re even buying a drone like the DJI Mavic Mini, which rather deliberately weighs 249g, you’ll still need to register it. This costs €30 and requires you to complete an online training course. In return, you get two years of flight permission and a number for your drone.

Buy a reputable brand

While there are other drone makers out there, DJI is one of the most reputable out there. DJI provides products that can range from cameras and drones to stabilizers built with gimbal technology and more, all designed to provide reliable performance and top-notch quality.

DJI’s commitment to creating designs that are user-friendly and support long-term use have made them a go-to choice for commercial businesses, filmmakers and photographers — making them a smart choice when it comes to investing in technology for your personal or professional needs.

Whether you’re just starting to build your kit, looking for an upgrade or replacing a lost piece of tech, DJI has something that will suit your requirements and exceed your expectations.

I myself have a first generation Mavic Mini drone and it’s still going strong.

Consider what you’ll be using the drone for

Many people have turned to drones as an exciting way to take their photography and videography to new heights. Before you shell out the cash for a drone, it pays to consider what you’ll be using it for. If your goals are strictly confined to taking pictures and videos, then there is no need for a top-of-the-line model with all the bells and whistles.

If you’re just starting out; instead, look around for more basic models that will serve your needs at a cheaper price.

If you’re looking at more technical aspects of flying like racing or stunts, then going all out with your purchase may be the best option. At the end of the day, knowing what you want from your drone is key in order make sure you don’t overspend on something that goes beyond your interests and abilities.

Think about how easy the drone is to fly – some models are easier than others, so if you’re not an experienced pilot, you may want to choose one that’s simpler to control

The drone is a fantastic invention that allows people to explore the skies with just a few clicks of the controller. While it might be enticing to choose one of the more complicated models, inexperienced pilots may want to start off with something simpler. Not only are they typically less expensive, but they are also easier and safer to fly as well!

A model that is easy to control will give an amateur pilot more confidence in their flying as getting used to controlling the drone takes practice. Plus, since you can always upgrade in the future once you’re more comfortable with your skills, starting with an easier-to-fly drone isn’t necessarily holding you back from exploring what your machine can do – it’s actually preparing you for success!

Once again, the likes of any of the DJI drones you’d find in Harvey Norman will probably hit the spot.

Whether you’re a drone enthusiast or an expert drone pilot, ignorance of drone laws can lead to costly consequences. It’s essential to spend time learning the drone laws in Ireland before taking flight. As mentioned, all camera drone pilots must register with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) and make sure their craft adheres to regulations concerning altitude and environment.

Even for drones below 250g, manned aircraft must not be endangered even when operated out of visual line sight, so it is good practice to check that your drone will not fly too high or enter any restricted airspace before flying. Understanding the legal implications of drone flying can mean the difference between a wonderful experience and one marred by fines or even jail time.

Get good and familiar with the DJI app which will help you ensure you’re not standing in a no-fly zone.

Be aware of your surroundings when flying the drone – avoid crowded areas and keep an eye out for obstacles

When flying a drone, it is absolutely essential to be aware of your surroundings. You must identify windy conditions and avoid crowded areas in order to maintain control over the aircraft. Keeping an eye out for obstacles such as power lines and tall structures is also paramount to ensuring safe and incident free operation. Flying in remote, open environments with little wind presents the best safety option when operating a drone. As always, following any local regulations regarding drone operation will help protect you from unwanted penalties or fines and keep yourself out of trouble.

The likes of them DJI Mavic Mini range is great for getting started. But finding a spot to fly in Ireland can actually be quite tough. Most of Dublin is a no go area, including the Phoenix Park. I found the mountains are a great place to go, but up there wind can pick up where the Mini might struggle.

If you’re buying a drone for yourself, hopefully you feel better informed. If you’re buying for someone else, you really have to be sure the person you’re buying for can be trusted with a drone. You should probably factor in the price of training too given it will be mandatory for the vast majority of drones on the market.

Are Huawei Monitors Good and Worth it?

Huawei devices have been featured a lot on Goosed.ie. I really liked their stuff. But years of security fears and U.S bans have led to their mobile arm being left non-existent in Ireland. They still sell great smart watches and even laptops, fully powered by Microsoft Windows. Alongside their laptops, Huawei still sell a range of monitors in Ireland. My regular monitor is the Huawei MateView GT and I recently got to test out the MateView SE.

Are Huawei Monitors Safe?

When you connect up the likes of the Huawei MateView GT you have the choice of using the usual HDMI connection, Display Port or USB-C. HDMI is the easy obvious one, but that will limit the data transfer between your computer and the display. Using USB-C is an obvious step for MacBook users, but this does unlock some new fears if you’re privacy-focused.

Personally, I don’t have any fears about using something like a Huawei monitor. I consider it somewhat unlikely that any government is snooping on me through my display. However, if you feel that’s likely or possible, perhaps a different brand is for you. I’ll admit the technical security of this hardware isn’t my forte. I’ve done some digging online and while I couldn’t find answers, I also didn’t find many people voicing concerns. So I guess there’s not much to fear here.

Time to move on to the tech review.

Huawei MateView GT

This is honestly like the Lamborghini or desktop monitors.

Display

The Huawei MateView GT is a 34-inch widescreen display. I’ve always been a fan of the double-screen setup while working. Laptop plus a monitor. But the MateView GT is effectively two screens in one, meaning you have a triple display setup.

The visual impact of a monitor like this is massive. Whether it’s productivity or gaming you have in mind, the display delivers. While falling short of 4K, the 165 Hz refresh rate will perk the ears of gamers.

Sitting on my desk, the monitor is impressive. But it’s not stupidly big. I’ve seen some of these displays and they consume the room. The Huawei MateView GT gets the balance of viewing space and physical size just right.

Generally speaking, I don’t like getting too deep into the specs with displays. I rather lean towards telling you it’s a stunning display to look at and is unlikely to disappoint, particularly when it comes to the price. Which I’ll cover later.

Build and Design

One of the big strengths of the Huawei MateView GT is its flexibility. As I mentioned, I can connect my MacBook using just a USB-C cable. With this one cable, I can view my MacBook on the Huawei screen and charge my laptop at the same time. That’s a nice neat setup.

You’ll find 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, 2 USB-C ports and a Display Port 1.4 along with a 3.5 audio jack. Something for everyone unless you’re deadset on using those blue VGA cables for some reason.

You can hand this on a wall or an arm using the usual VESA mounts or simply leave it on its stand.

The stand doubles as a soundbar with RGB lighting (aimed at the gamer market).

I’ve glanced at some other opinions online about this soundbar and opinions are divided. I think the quality is great. The only complaint I have is that it does stick out quite a bit on my somewhat narrow desk. But still, it doesn’t get in the way.

Huawei MateView GT: The Verdict

I cannot think of a single scenario where buying the Huawei MateView GT would leave anyone disappointed. If you’re gaming or working, the screen offers something. You can find this monitor for as little as €399.99 which is a ridiculously low price. That lowers the risk profile of this recommendation dramatically.

Huawei MateView SE

The Huawei MateView SE is one of the latest displays released by Huawei. Again, the price here is impressive given the amount of quality you get in return.

I’d argue this is one of the very best monitors for the average joe just looking for a great screen for their home office.

Display

The MateView SE shows off some amazing colours on the 23.8-inch display and is generally a very sharp and crisp. I have to keep repeating, it’s good for the price, but to be fair, it’s just good full stop.

None of the specs are “out of this world” wonderful, but they are best in class for the price and target market. The screen has a 178-degree viewing angle meaning it’s a good solution for multiple users sitting at different heights. Handy if you’re sharing the home office.

Huawei also included a novel idea with this display. You can set it to simulate eink. It’s not quite the same as a genuine eink display, but if you’re reading compatible documents I’d wager it does reduce the strain on your eyes.

Build and Design

To look at, this is one gorgeous monitor. The MateView SE offers slim bezels and a generally compact profile. It’s a neat piece of kit for your desk. It measures 538.5 × 413 × 174 mm and weighs just 3.4kg with the included stand.

Like, monitors don’t always get to be sexy, but this is as sexy as the entry-level monitors get. It runs on a proprietary power input alongside an HDMI port and a display port.

Again, this is VESA compatible so you can either mount the monitor or use the included stand.

One issue I had was how easy it is to scratch the base. I was rotating the display and it scraped the base. It left what seems to be a permanent mark. The action I was carrying out was one any user connecting a HDMI cable would do. So it’s a little disappointing how easily it happened.

Huawei MateView SE: The Verdict

You can grab this monitor for about €130. For the quality you’re getting that price is amazing. The review here was short but that’s because this is a simple monitor. Similar to that you’d find on your desk in an office. But it’s also a lot better than those Dell screens most of us stare at.

Are Huawei Monitors Worth It?

Right. So, are they worth it? Ultimately, yes. Any Huawei monitor I’ve got to test out has been impressive. They’re great to look at and usually have some features you’d either not find anywhere else, or pay a lot more for.

Huawei has had to pivot its business to continue generating revenue outside of China. Working on monitors is a clever way to keep in front of consumers.

Working from home seems to be here to stay. If you’ve not kitted out your home office yet, or have gotten some expense permission from a maturing business, Huawei monitors will maximise bang for your buck.

It’s Time to Ban Phones at Concerts

Here it is. The article that proves I’m becoming a grump, or grumpier, old man. I am convinced, more than ever, it’s time we ban people from using phones at gigs. I’ve watched one too many gigs through a sea of phones and I’m sick of it.

Before you say it. I know, I took at picture at the very gig I’m complaining about – but that was to prove my point.

phones akimbo for the James May gig
A small window to watch the gig

Videoing a Gig is Silly

Let’s start with the very crux of the issue here. You’re never going to watch that video again. Ever. We can dance around the facts here, but it’s extremely unlikely you’ll ever watch that video again.

I was at a James Bay gig recently and witnessed the most ridiculous of things. A concert-goer beside me was filming the gig, but all she could see was James Bay on stage, through another person’s phone doing the exact same thing. There was some weird human camerapede of filming going on.

The quality of video at gigs has increased dramatically. So I can understand the attraction of grabbing one quick vertical video to post online saying you were there. But at this gig, I was surrounded by people filming at least 2 minutes of each well-known song. There are barely any social media platforms that promote posting videos of that length nowadays.

You’re Ruining it for Everyone Else

Going to a gig should be all about the music. It’s a romantic idea, I know. But nowadays, I feel like people don’t go to gigs for the music at all. I was stood beside two absolute melts who would not shut up talking to each other. From time to time, someone threw them a dirty look and they whipped out the phones, shot a video and then when back chatting. I literally couldn’t hear some of the set because of them.

That’s the audio experience being impacted. To compound the problem, now when you look at stage, you’re looking through a field of phones. Until now, we all just had to compete with that unit of a lad who’s 6-foot tall. Because of people videoing the entire gig, everyone has the ability to ruin a perfectly good vantage point.

There’s another stunning faux pas demonstrated at this gig. At least five times, I could have sworn Jesus Christ himself was entering the venue from behind me. People chucking on their videos with full flash for a good few minutes. The heavenly light cast across us all as we realise someone is shooting a lovely video of my double crown.

Yes. That tiny little LED flash is going to be a right help here lads.

What are you Actually Paying Attention to?

Shooting a video isn’t always point-and-shoot either. Once you realise you have to turn off your Jesus-flash, you have to zoom, keep the phone steady while also trying to keep your armpits out of people’s faces. One person, I kid you not, was doing a TikTok live and responding to comments.

Another person near me video-called a friend at home on the couch so she could see the gig. You know how video calls work, right? When you call someone they’re massive on your screen. Now, in my line of sight, is James Bay and some girl cosied up in her PJs. This is one of the most jarring things I’ve seen at a gig, and not for the first time. I voice-called people from shows in the past, but this is getting silly.

Worse still, you’re jolting others around you from the moment too.

I have to point out here too, this isn’t a “young person” problem. I’ve seen all people, of all ages, from all walks of life, shooting video at gigs. Some of the very best gems have been older attendees with bloody iPads shooting video. Everyone is ruining gigs, not just the kids.

It’s no secret that smartphones cause a disconnection between people. What’s less obvious is the absolute distraction they present. If you’re checking messages or shooting video, you’re not really in the moment. I’d argue that you’d have been as well to keep that money in your pocket, listen to your favourite artist at home on Spotify and wait for other videos of the gig to emerge online.

Of course, if everyone did that, you’d have to attend the gig and listen properly. Not that bad, right? So, how do we tackle this issue.

How to Ban Phones at a Comedy Gig or Concert

The solution here is actually quite simple. I remember the first time I had to leave my phone outside a venue. It was for an advanced screening of a film no one really cared all that much about. I can’t even remember the name of it. It felt weird, but I understood what was happening. Our phones were in a lunch box type thing, we got a ticket and off we went. Security was keeping an eye. All good.

Was it a little weird not having my phone? No. I’m happy enough knowing I wouldn’t have been using my phone anyway. Just like music gigs and comedy shows back in the 90s. You wouldn’t have had your phone with you anyway. So why are you so bothered about it today?

There is a great solution that’s been tested at scale and it works. A solution by a company called Yondr.

The Yondr pouch

On entry to the gig you’re attending, staff take your phone and pop it into a Yondr pouch, like the one you see here. You take the pouch with you and you’re free to enjoy the gig.

The pouch is locked using similar technology to the security tags you find in clothes shops. A magnet frees your phone from its dark prison.

Need to use your phone during the gig? Not a problem. You simply head off to an approved area where phone usage is allowed, and you can temporarily take your phone out of the pouch. You’d have to leave to use the bathroom, so just think of this being an additional toilet or bar break.

The Yondr system has already featured at gigs here in Ireland. It’s not a complicated piece of kit, but it does mean gigs are genuinely phone free. Security is under instruction to boot anyone out seen with a phone not in a pouch, so not smuggling a second either.

If that last line makes you feel uneasy, I’d have to ask what’s more important. Going to a gig and living the moment, or going to a gig just to shoot video and post it online?

Agree or disagree? I’m on Mastodon where you’ll find a poll and some chats about this already. Jump over there and let’s chat.

Brewmaster Review: Brewing a Beer in Brewmaster and Real Life

Earlier this year, I got into brewing. I got into it in a big way. Still, I’ve only managed to recently brew my fourth beer. It’s a time-consuming hobby. But it’s really rewarding. Because of the time, it takes to brew, I was excited to see Auroch Digital announce Brewmaster, a brewing simulator (game). Is it a game? Or is it a simulator? Well, I recently brewed an Irish Red Ale in real life, and now I’ve brewed it in Brewmaster too.

Planning the Red Ale Recipe

I had been playing around with Brewmaster for a few hours. I had been working my way through the story. This involved mainly extract brewing kits, a big step in learning brewing that I skipped completely. Instead, I went into all-grain brewing. Fortunately, Brewmaster opens up features pretty quickly in story mode. I still hadn’t unlocked an all-in-one system like the Brewster Beacon system I use in real life, but I did have enough tools to try my real-world recipe in Brewmaster.

Planning the recipe involves picking grains, hops and yeast. You also have to decide your batch size. The first thing I learned is that a lot of hops and grains are actually still under copyright.

There were some surprised faces at my local brew club, Capital Brewers, when I mentioned my use of Nelson Sauvin in my red ale. That’s an expensive New Zealand hop protected by a patent. For that reason, when you’re designing a recipe in Brewmaster you have to work out what cheeky name they’ve given the “same” hop.

Nelson Sauvage – seriously?

This is effectively the Pro Evolution Soccer workaround, but for beer brewing.

After I worked out most of the recipe, it was time for a virtual brew day.

Brewing the Virtual Irish Red Ale

I carefully measure out the grains into my mash tun. I’m already heating water in my virtual kettle to get it up to 78 degrees. The idea here is that when I add that water to my grains it’ll come down to about 65 degrees.

Sure enough, I combine the water and grains in my mash tun and we’re brewing.

I can’t seem to spage in Brewmaster. This is a specific stage of my brewing process where you rinse your grains. Maybe it gets unlocked later, but it’s the first thing from my real-life brew day I can’t replicate.

After speeding up time using the in-game clock, it’s time to get my wort into a pot for the boil. It’s a quick job transferring. You can make transferring that bit quicker by using a pump. Some of the game physics are fun. One earlier transfer was slow because both vessels were beside each other on a table. Moving one to the floor got things going again.

The wort is now boiling and I’m adding in my “I can’t believe it’s not Nelson Sauvin” hops. Oddly, despite being able to add this to my recipe, I’m not able to find it in the brew store in the game.

The game is buggy from time to time. It’s crashed a few times. It’s annoying.

Despite the bugs and fake hops, I get through the hot side of my virtual brew day. Now it’s time to cool everything as quickly as possible.

Fermentation and Packaging Virtual Beer

Brewmaster is true to life for quick a bit of brewing. You get off flavours in your beer if you don’t cool your wort quickly enough post boil, or if you make a mistake somewhere. Nothing is overly negative in the game. Like, you can’t die or hit a “game over” screen, but you’ll be annoyed at yourself for silly mistakes.

I get my immersion chiller into the wort and get things chilled to 20 degrees. Then it’s a quick transfer into my fermenter followed by pitching yeast. It’s all following a normal brewday at this stage. Again, skipping time is one of the big advantages of brewing in a game like this versus the real world. The other is not having to clean anything – the worst part of making beer.

Not a giog out of the bubbler

I’m disappointed to see no bubbler activity animation in Brewmaster. That moment, after 24 hours of watching your fermenter, to know there’s life, is magical. But it’s omitted from Brewmaster. That really surprised me given the attention to detail is quite incredible away from this.

Skipping over the 15 days of fermentation, it’s time to chuck in some sugar and add to a conditioning vessel. This is a big departure from my own setup. Basically, this is a kegging setup. Not something beginner brewers typically have. I had sugar to individual bottles, not the entire batch.

After skipping forward in time another 21 days, the beer is ready for tasting.

Tasting the Virtual Beer

Skipping time and not cleaning up after you brew is amazing. But by far the worst thing about Brewmaster is that you can’t really taste your beer. But then again, can you really fly with Flight Simulator or enjoy anything but experience from a simulator?

Brewmaster tries to gamify beer brewing as best they can. They tie in a lot of real-world elements of being a home brewer. There are local brew competitions, the first of which one of my beers won I might add. You’ll also be invited to give your beer to local events. If that’s based on real-world events, there are countries out there with much looser licensing laws.

My virtual Bacon Juice Irish Red Ale, brewed in Brewmaster

The quarterly edition of Brewers Quarterly has challenges and recipes for you to take on. As you do, the game will gauge how well you’ve brewed your beer. If you’ve made mistakes or not used certain techniques like chilling, you might get off flavours. And that’s where the fun of the game is.

How accurate the recipe simulator is, is hard to judge. But I use an amazing app called Brewfather to craft my own beer recipes. It’s incredible at estimating beer characteristics so it makes total sense that homebrewing has ended up here, in a simulator.

Above you’ll see the results of my virtual brewday and below you’ll find the real beer. The real beer came out with a higher ABV and was darker. Given I had to sub so many ingredients owing to those copyright things I mentioned, it’s not unlikely that the recipe changed somewhat.

Brewmaster: The Verdict

Before I started brewing, I would have loved this. I actually went looking for a simulator to try and better understand the stages of brewing. Brewmaster is incredibly accurate in this sense. It’s a way of training your muscle memory to avoid silly mistakes on brewday.

The lifespan of the game is rather limited though. I’ll admit the creators have done really well with the gamification of brewing, but still, there’s only so much virtual brewing you can do before getting bored. Particularly when there’s no real beer at the end of it. Styling your brew area is a nice addition along with the competitions and challenges, but it’s still limited.

My real Bacon Juice Irish Red Ale, brewed in real life. See how it’s darker?

It’s a lot cheaper to get cracking with Brewmaster than it is real brewing, so if you’ve ever thought about getting into brewing as a hobby, this might just let you know if there’s too much work involved or not. It might be the perfect gift for the homebrewer in your life either. They’ll cause less of a mess brewing here anyway.

I bought this myself and reviewed it on Playstation 5.
