Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT Review: If It’s Good Enough For Lady Gaga?

Lady Gaga part-organised the amazing One World Concert. The event raised around €118 million for Covid-19 causes. It was an incredible event. I also noticed that I have become a bit of a headphone nerd while watching it. As all of these superstars from around the world played their well-known tunes, Lady Gaga came on the screen. I blurted out, “gas, I have those headphones”. Here’s what I think of the Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT. The first thing I’ll say is Lady Gaga uses them. That’s probably enough.

Why Is Lady Gaga Using Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT Headphones?

I asked this. One of the world’s best-known songwriters, singers and generally famous people is happy using these headphones while singing to a global audience. So, they got something.

The ATH-M50x headphones are studio-grade monitor headphones. I do some recording at home, but I’m no Lady Gaga. If they’re good enough for her, they’re good enough for me. One thing worth pointing out is that I can’t be sure whether she wore the ATH-M50x or the ATH-M50xBT. The latter is newer and has can operate wirelessly.

Now back to the bits I can comment on.

ATH-M50xBT Design

I’ve been testing a lot of headphones lately. While I’ve tried the ultra-premium Sennheiser Momentum 3 headphones, I personally prefer the Bose QC35 II or the Sony WH-1000XM3 which Jon tested out. From all of the headphones I’ve tried on, I think the ATH-M50xBT from Audio-Technica might very well be right up there with some of the best designed.

While there’s plenty of plastic on show, these headphones demonstrate that doesn’t need to be a bad thing. The plastic used right is a great material for sound quality and comfort. None of the plastic here makes these feel cheap. In fact, any doubts about these being top of the range headphones go out the window once you pick them up.

The thicker profile of the headband coupled with generous padding, perfect tightness on the head and leather cups left me forgetting I was wearing headphones at all. The multi-directional joints mean the cups can bend and twist in almost any possible combination. Also, if you want to pop them into your bag, they fold up nice and tight.

ATH-M50xBT Functionality

Most of the flagship headphones I’ve tested hang their hats on noise-cancellation. These headphones don’t bother with that. Now, the cups offer natural noise suppression, but if you are really investing in headphones to knock out the rumble of jet-engines, you might want to focus on the noise-cancelling headphones out there.

Wired Or Wireless

But the Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT offers plenty. First up, the original wired ATH-M50x were absolute fan favourites. They had everything. But then people phone makers started to drop the headphone jack. While this wasn’t for everyone and definitely didn’t go down well with audiophiles. But Audio-Technica needed to react regardless and made the ATH-M50xBT. They come with a cable in the box but you can also go wireless if you like.

AptX

Not only can you go wireless, but you can enjoy AptX if your phone, like the P30 Pro, supports it. There’s no Bluetooth 5.1, instead, you just get Bluetooth 5.0.

Battery

Without noise cancelling, you get to drop the weight and increase the battery life per gram. Advertising 40 hours, the ATH-M50xBT don’t fall far short of that stat. The big drawback is that you only have a micro-USB port. That means these headphones will likely be the only reason you have to carry that cable around with you again.

Buttons

I always think it’s hilarious that something gets fairly close to perfection and someone includes something awful. The regular buttons and controls are great, but then Audio-Technica decided all headphone must have a button to activate your phone’s assistant. The ATH-M50xBT don’t seem to be able to do this if your phone is locked. Unlocking your phone, you must hold your fingers on the left can for what honestly feels like an eternity. Classic inclusion of features without a second thought for actual users.

While it’s hard to fault these headphones, man oh man did that stand out.

ATH-M50xBT Sound

All that’s great unless they sound horrible. The reason I started with Gaga is that, let’s face it, if they are good enough for her they’re going to be good enough for most. The quick and dirty reason for musicians choosing headphones like these is because they’re good quality but also neutral. Nothing worse than a pair of Beats by Dre that just pump your head full of fake bass.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT: The Verdict

These are a great pair of headphones. I have a small arsenal of headphones at my disposal and these are right up there. If I’m jumping on a flight, these probably get left at home. But sitting at the desk, going for a walk or something similar, these are just something special. Arguably, some of the best headphones on the market which leave noise cancelling.

HP Spectre x360 13 Review: The Realistic Windows Alternative to MacBook

When I was younger, I used to turn my nose up at Apple devices. Overpriced and oversimplified software sitting on underused hardware. I still feel that way about iPhone, but I have a MacBook Pro and an iPad. They’re probably two of my favourite gadgets. They work so well. Which left me a little worried when HP sent over the Spectre x360 13 to review. I use another Windows laptop fairly regularly and when you live a double OS life, MacOS usually wins. But I left my favouritism at the door and booted the Spectre up.

Spectre x360 13 Design

I hate when I say this, but this laptop is premium. The quality of the build is impeccable. You might remember there was a Bond movie a few years back that shared a name with this laptop and let’s be honest, this laptop is still Bond-worthy. It’s that full aluminium body design, durable joints and clever use of space. While the USB-C port on the corner of the body and the power button on the other corner are clever, the inclusion of a literally, jaw-dropping USB-A port immediately made me question everything about MacBook design.

Also part of the design is the fact this is a dual-purpose machine. Fold the screen right back and you effectively have a tablet. You get all of this in a body that weighs just 1.27kg. This is the 13-inch model and that weight makes it substantially lighter than the MacBook of the same size.

Thoughtful and premium is how I would describe the design of the Spectre x360. Right down to the stylus and leather laptop sleeve that’s included in the box. If privacy is a concern you hold, the Spectre has an ace up its sleeve. There’s a physical button that lets you switch off the webcam completely. No snooping. Almost ironic from a laptop originally marketed alongside a James Bond movie.

Spectre x360 13 Display

Now, I’m going to keep on making MacBook comparisons, but I really need to repeat that I love my MacBook. The Spectre display blew me away. I remember after turning on YouTube and switching the settings to 4K, I went back to my Mac to see how damn bad my display was. The 4K OLED screen is an optional extra that adds a sizeable chunk of change onto the price of your machine. I’m not going to say it’s worth it or it’s not because how important 4K it comes down to what you need the machine for. You might be rendering social posts in 1080p or looking to get the most from your 4K Netflix subscription.

What I will repeat again is that the 4K OLED is one of the best laptop displays on the market, if it’s not the very best full stop.

Back when I reviewed this laptop, the world was still normal and webcams were this weird thing that no one really needed on a laptop. HP has given the webcam that level of consideration. The lens is tiny. That’s good news for those of you who like slim bezels. Bad news if you actually want to have some sort of decent quality without hooking up an external webcam.

Spectre x360 13 Input

The Spectre has a plethora of input options which both add to the usability and the overall design appeal of the laptop. The keyboard is practically flawless. A practical problem for me was switching from my MacBook. But, how quickly I transitioned is a great example of the keyboard’s travel and responsiveness being as good as you could hope for. Next up, the trackpad. Again, zero complaints here from me. Responsive and, arguably, more importantly, I didn’t get any phantom touches while typing. Also, having the option of a touch screen input works fantastically. Of course, this is nothing new but it’s not something a MacBook user generally gets to enjoy.

I’m no artist, but the stylus is responsive and could easily let you transition from paper to tablet.

Screen inputs beings me to the stylus. I love my Apple Pencil, but sometimes Apple just arrives at a solution with no logic applied, assuming they got it right. HP has thoughtfully designed their pen to be a natural extension of your input options that you’ll just reach for automatically in certain situations.

The fingerprint reader. So many reviewers will consider these to be a gimmick but I love nothing more than having a really secure password to my password manager that unlocks with a finger swipe. It’s another feature that made me think of Bond again. Q would be proud.

Finally, I want to give another mention to that USB-A port. Sure, nearly everything is USB-C now, but not having to reach for a dongle every two minutes is a lifesaver. It’ll be a thing of the past before long, but it’s great for external hard drives and charging other devices from your laptop.

Spectre x360 13 Performance And Battery

The specs on this laptop are practically maxed out for most users. Packing a quad-core 10th Gen Intel Core processor with Iris Plus Graphics. Now, if you’re after a high-end gaming laptop, this isn’t for you. But it’ll run most games without any problems at all, within logical graphic-settings reason.

The battery is insane. I fully charged mine when it landed. Despite fairly tough testing, In only charged the laptop again to factory reset before sending it back. I don’t believe you’ll get the “up to 22 hours” life promised through any sort of regular use, but 13 hours of fairly tough going is a walk in the park for the Spectre.

While there’s no integrated LAN port, you get Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) which means you’ll want for no speed.

Spectre x360 13: The Verdict

If I had to buy a new laptop in the morning, would it still be my MacBook? Until I tested the Spectre, the answer was yes. I wouldn’t have considered anything else. But the Spectre returned some faith into my mind about Windows laptops. They can be remarkable. They can be simply stunning. They can be beautifully designed and powerful enough to do anything.

I’m not going to pretend this is a laptop for everyone. Most people in the market for a laptop are in the sub-€1000 group. But if you’re self-employed and want a solid all-rounder that can do everything you need for work while also being perfect to stream Netflix, you’ve found your next laptop right here.

The Basic HP Spectre x360 13 will set you back €1299. The 16 GB RAM, 4K OLED display, and 1 TB SSD model will put an €1899 dent in your wallet. The last word on this laptop is that it can stand toe-to-toe with MacBook and it’s one of the very best pound-for-pound laptops on the market.

The HP Spectre x360 13 is available to buy from Amazon.co.uk and HP Store Ireland.

How to Download Free Magazines And Newspapers To Your Tablet Or Phone

One thing has become abundantly clear in isolation. Technology, while often criticised for privacy and anti-social reason, has massive power to connect us all. I’d argue that tech, in general, has helped many reconnect with friends and family more than ever. Tech can also help you reconnect with an old friend you may have forgotten about. I’m not on about that kid from primary school. Instead, I’m on about the library.

Online Library Services

If you think libraries are “just” full of books, think again. In my opinion, the libraries of Ireland have done more to pivot and survive in a digital world than most businesses. At the start of this year, I teamed up with Rob from the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival and recorded a podcast in the Ballyfermot Library. They’ve built two recording studios on-site, free to library members with just a booking.

Naturally, that’s not much use to you right now as you’re in isolation, living with restrictions like the rest of us but Irish libraries have plenty of services online for members to make use of at home.

Read Newspapers Online With Your Local Library

I’ve seen plenty of people on Twitter saying it’s now more than ever we need reliable journalism. From the FAI scandal to Covid-19 facts, quality journalism is what keeps power honest. It’s why Donald Trump tries to undermine the journalism that doesn’t suit his narrative.

Because of Covid-19 restrictions, people are more likely to go online and get their news from social media or other websites where they don’t have to pay. This can be risky as there are plenty of news sites out there being bankrolled by someone to tell the story in a certain way. Paid journalists are a lot less likely to do this.

When you have a library membership, you also gain digital access to some of Ireland’s most popular newspapers. Today, I was able to read the Irish Independent on my iPad and start into a crossword. This experience was great. All I needed to do was screenshot the crossword and then fill it in using my Apple Pencil.

There are other papers on offer here too including the Irish Examiner, Daily Irish Mirror, Washington Post and even foreign-language newspapers. I previously looked for the German Nordwest Zeitung in Dublin but can now check this out using my library membership. Beyond papers, there’s a massive selection of magazines to enjoy too. This would normally cost you a few euro down the shops, but now you can read them all on your phone, laptop or tablet. All you need is a library membership.

To access all of this content, you need to visit the Press Reader website and download their app. All you need to do then is log in with your library membership by typing in your membership barcode number.

The library also offers another dedicated service for just magazines. It’s worth checking that out too as there are some more things in there to read not available through Press Reader.

Download Ebooks With Your Library Membership

Perhaps not too surprisingly, you can also download ebooks with your library membership. You might think this would be a total free for all, but there are limitations. For example, each online library only has access to a certain number of books. This is why you may come across certain ebooks which are unavailable to download. You’ll need to wait until someone returns their digital copy.

Regardless of this small drawback, ebooks are another brilliant feature made available by the Irish Library Service. Like newspapers, ebooks are made available through a third-party app which you can log into using your library membership number.

Download the BorrowBox app to start downloading ebooks. You can also download audiobooks through the BorrowBox app too.

Take An Online Course

If you’ve found yourself laid-off from work with nothing but time on your hands, isolation might be especially tough. You might decide that the best thing to do is upskill and learn something new for when restrictions start to lift again. With a library membership, you have access to learn a new skill and even a new language. Although I’m not convinced the latter is that easy to setup.

The online courses made available by the library are really easy once you have your library membership. You can learn things like classic calligraphy or modern Photoshop skills. Right there, you have two ways into a new design-based job. Of course, I’m oversimplifying everything massively, but having free access to these courses means you can dip your toe in the water and see if something feels right for you.

Getting A Library Membership

This is all well and good if you have a library membership, but what if you’re not a member already? The good news is that you can join your local Irish library online. Typically, there is a step which requires you to visit your local library in person but this is not required while libraries are closed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Once you complete your online membership application, you’ll have everything you need to access these brilliant online services from the Irish Library Service.

Ryanair SEO: Did Someone Try To Hide The Ryanair Website?

We’re used to hearing about the Ryanair CEO, Michael O’ Leary. I can assure you, the title of this article isn’t a typo. Indeed, this is about SEO or Search Engine Optimisation. Right now, the Ryanair website has an issue which is stopping search engines like Google from seeing new content the airline publishes. But what exactly is going on and why has Ryanair added this single line of code asking Google to ignore them?

What Is SEO: Search Engine Optimisation?

Some companies hire people dedicated to ensuring their website appears as high as possible in search engines like Google when customers search for certain queries. It’s a job that’s part strategy and part technical. This means when you have an SEO in your company, you have someone who can influence where your website ranks in Google.

This works both ways. By that, I mean their work can either make your site appear more or disappear from Google completely.

SEO And The Ryanair Website

Nearly every website in the world has a file on it which is publically accessible. Try it out yourself! Just go to your favourite web site’s homepage and add “/robots.txt”. The file that opens is a relatively simple text file full of instructions to search engines like Google. SEOs and developers use the robots.txt file to request search engines to ignore page updates and new content.

Hiding Ryanair From Google

On 8th May, someone updated the Ryanair robots.txt file with a simple directive. The change was spotted by Dublin-based SEO, Francesco Baldini, who turned to Twitter to spark a bit of discussion.

This is where I heard of what was happening and I was intrigued because I work within the world of SEO myself.

The directive which was added to the Ryanair website tells Google to stop checking the entire website.

ryanair website seo
The second line of this directive instructs Google’s web crawlers to ignore the entire Ryanair.com website

Using another website called the Wayback Machine, which shows you what the internet used to look like, I could see what this robots.txt file looked like before the change.

ryanair old robots.txt file

You don’t need to understand this. I’m showing you, really, just to display that a dramatic change has taken place in Ryanair’s robots.txt file. But why? And why should anyone care?

What Impact Will This Have On Ryanair?

Most importantly, this change doesn’t simply make Ryanair disappear from search engine results like Google. Just last week, Linkedin vanished from Google completely. This was after a Google algorithm update but the cause was much sillier and was completely Linkedin’s fault. Using an SEO tool provided by Google, someone in Linkedin removed the entire website from the index.

The change which has been made to the Ryanair website only requests Google no longer check the website for content updates. Over time this will almost certainly impact the number of times Ryanair appears in front of customers unless the change is reversed.

Why Has Ryanair Updated Their Robots.txt File?

This is baffling. The robots.txt file is often used by developers to hide a website when it’s being built. Sometimes, this doesn’t get updated after the website gets launched and it’s forgotten about until an SEO is hired and spots that a change is needed.

So why has Ryanair made a change to their website that hides it from Google and other search engines too? I’ve reached out to Ryanair for an official statement, but there are some theories and speculation on Twitter already.

Covid-19 Damage Management

The travel industry has taken a big hit as a direct result of Covid-19. The man who discovered the change, Francesco, theorises that the change could be a way to reduce bookings and refunds during a difficult time for the low-cost airline.

This does seem unlikely given the airline is still running sales campaigns. I received an email for one just this morning. Also, as I mentioned above, this change wouldn’t remove Ryanair from Google in the short-term. Instead, it would hide new pages from Google and perhaps lead to pages disappearing from Google’s index and certainly lead to reduced rankings over time.

Ryanair Sacked An Employee With The Power

If you think it’s crazy that such a simple file can have such a big impact, most SEOs are right there with you. Making a simple mistake in the robot.txt file could have a long term impact on a website. It keeps SEOs up at night. But still, you need to be in a position of power with access to some areas of the Ryanair website which are well and truly under lock and key. Most SEOs wouldn’t have direct access to amend a robots.txt file. Instead, this right is reserved for developers. These are the people who amend the fundamental code of the website.

Luke Fitzgerald, of Right Fitz SEO, points out that yesterday Ryanair announced they would cut 250 office-based jobs. The airline stated, “these people will not be required to return to work on 1 June, when the Ryanair offices reopen, due to the substantial decline in traffic the Ryanair Group Airlines is facing in 2020”.

These jobs are based in Dublin, Stansted, Madrid and Wroclaw with the cuts resulting from a combination of contracts ending, resignations and redundancies. This absolutely makes it possible that a developer with access to Ryanair’s robots.txt file was less than pleased to be let go and then added this directive as revenge.

Exaggerating The Impact Of Covid-19

These causes are very plausible but there are countless other possibilities too. In the world of SEO, it’s just such an unusual move to add this directive to your robots.txt file without a really good reason, I have to assume there’s a really unusual story here too. Another theory and I’m going to really stress this is nothing more than a theory, could be that Ryanair is using website traffic to demonstrate the impact of Covid-19 on the entire business.

Ryanair does not currently stand to benefit from any bailouts of airlines. However, they are challenging that to ensure should bailouts be offered to airlines that the no-frills airline gets their share too. As a theory, it can’t be ruled out that Ryanair wants less website traffic during the month of May and June to exaggerate the impact of Covid-19 on the airline’s website.

I will once again state that this is a theory. I have no idea of what requirements are behind the scenes when it comes to these government bailouts and whether or not they’ll even happen.

As I mentioned, I’ve reached out to Ryanair for an official statement of this matter and as soon as I get an updated, I’ll be sure to update this article.

Closca Launch Sustainable Facemask Amid Increased Demand

There’s a wee company in Spain called Closca. Their motto is to inspire change. A few months back they sent me a foldable helmet which I used on my scooter. The review is coming, but I need to wait for scooters to be legal here first. But the helmet is amazing. Closca does think differently. They prioritise design and sustainability, accepting zero compromises. As Covid-19 continues to change the world we live in today, Closca has begun creating sustainable non-medical facemasks amid increased demand globally. I’ve ordered one, so the review is coming. This is just a preview (in the tone of Tenacious D).

Increased Demand For Facemasks

I was walking to the shops in Dublin City during the week and spotted some locals wearing facemasks. The blue mask matched well with the man’s sky blue Dublin jersey. I thought to myself how much the world has changed. Just two months ago, that man would have seen someone from Asia wearing a mask and laughed to himself, despite it being very common in Asia. But now, he won’t leave the house without a protective mask.

Lidl Stocking Non-Medical Grade Facemasks

Today, Lidl announced that they were now stocking non-medical facemasks.

It’s a measured move from the discount supermarket. They will sell these as “cost price”, are “non-medical grade” and will be limited to one pack per customer. Lidl will sell these packs of 50 as a pack of 50 for €43.30. With these steps, Lidl has moved to meet demand without price gouging or capitalising on public need while also leaving the supply chain of “medical grade” facemasks unaffected.

Increased Interest In Facemasks

To validate that there’s an increased demand for facemasks in Ireland, you need only walk around your local city or town centre. Chances are you’ll spot people wearing some sort of a facemask. With the spread of Covid-19, despite there being no advise from the government to wear masks, people have started to do so. Whether their belief is that they are protecting themselves or others remains unclear. The increased prevalence of facemasks is much more obvious to the eye.

One quick look at Google Trends shows a sharp uplift in people searching for information on facemasks.

Will The Irish Government Make Facemasks Mandatory?

Over 50 countries have made the wearing of facemasks mandatory. Notable European countries making masks mandatory are Germany, France, Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina made mask-wearing mandatory, after the Czech Republic led the way.

Initially, it seemed unlikely there would be a mandatory requirement for facemasks to be worn. Simon Harris said he believed it to be an unlikely scenario. Just this week, this position was again reiterated by Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan, stating guidelines would be issued for wearing of masks in certain situations but that this would be advisories and not mandatory.

While not mandatory, an announcement was made a recommendation the wearing of face-coverings.

Additional Hygiene Measure: Wearing A Face Covering

In a speech confirming Phase One of relaxing restrictions could go ahead as planned, Leo Varadkar announced an additional hygiene measure of wearing a “face covering”. Varadkar highlighted busy public transport and enclosed indoor public areas like retail stores and shops.

The language used here is important. This is a recommendation, so it’s not a mandatory requirement. It also didn’t state that a medical grade face-covering would be required. For that reason, homemade face-coverings are completely acceptable.

Should I Buy A Facemask?

Which leads to the big question. Should you buy a facemask? If what’s been said so far is to be believed, there’s no mandatory need for you to buy a facemask. That said, it looks like most people want to buy masks regardless. I’m genuinely surprised by the number of people wearing masks around the city. I’m even more surprised by people wearing masks who would have previously laughed at others.

All of this stuff combined would suggest that most people, whether mandatory or not, will buy some sort of mask or protective cover.

What Mask Should I Buy?

If you decide to buy a mask for the shop run, there are a few things to consider. First of all, you shouldn’t buy medical-grade masks because you don’t need them. You certainly don’t need them as much as frontline staff or immunocompromised people.

Next, be careful where you buy your masks. Unlike Lidl, many retailers have seen their chance and at flogging masks at huge prices. I passed one city centre store with a hastily handwritten sign offering masks for €2.50. Very similar masks will be available in Lidl for 83c (sold in a box of 50).

Finally, and I really hope this resonates with a large number of people, think about the environment. I refuse to ignore the way we treat our planet and the likes of Covid-19 emerging. It does feel like the planet is fighting back. Even if you think I’m talking non-sense, seeking out a sustainable facemask will save you money in the long term anyway.

After that rather long-winded introduction, it’s time to preview the Closca Mask.

The Closca Mask

So Closca are all about quality, sustainability and rethinking design. We’ve all seen pictures of frontline staff after wearing their disposable masks for hours. They mark their faces, cut their ears and are generally uncomfortable despite doing their job. Also, they are effectively single-use masks and as such generate a huge amount of waste.

closca non-medical facemask

The Closca Mask seeks to address most of these issues with their stylish, futuristic and a little bit techie non-medical facemask.

Cloth Mask Design

The Closca Mask doesn’t depend on applying pressure over to ears to remain in place. Instead, it wraps around the back of the head. The mask uses a velcro fastening system which means one mask is adjustable to fit everyone.

facemask without hurting ears

The mask itself is soft foldable cloth and comes with a carry pouch. Made from 95.5% Polyester and 4.5% Spandex, not only is the mask comfortable but it’s also washable. Better still, the mask is machine washable up to 60-degrees Celcius.

Closca is also looking towards a world where masks are just a part of everyday life. When ordering your Closca Mask you can personalise your mask. Choose between black, white or grey base colours and then savanna, coral, glacier, beach or nude trim.

Sustainable

Protective masks could quickly become the new plastic straws. We’ve worked so hard to reduce single-use plastics, but now supermarkets wrap more items and we’re throwing away more waste than ever.

The masks aren’t quite Zero Waste, but they are highly sustainable versus single-use PPE. They’re also plastic-free from what I’ve seen so far, but I’ll confirm that. Your mask order includes 6 washable filters. Each filter can be washed up to 5 times. When inserted, the filters avoid direct contact with the face and skin, increasing their durability.

As I said, the mask itself is reusable so immediately you’re doing the environment a favour. This could very well be the best sustainable mask on the market.

black facemask covid19

Non-Medical Grade Protection

The Closca Mask is a non-medical grade which means you’re not taking masks from those who need them most. Actually, quite the opposite. Closca has created the Health Hero initiative. This means when you buy a Closca Mask you’re also donating 5 medical-grade masks to vulnerable groups.

While the Closca Mask itself is a non-medical grade mask, it is made from high-grade materials. The filters have been made in Spain following official regulations (EN 14683: 2019 + AC: 2019 type 2). The mask itself has a 98% bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE).

The Closa Mask absolutely meets the requirements if you wish to take government advise to wear a non-medical face-covering.

How To Buy The Closca Reusable Facemask

If you want to buy an eco-friendly, reusable and sustainable facemask, it’s hard to look beyond the Closca Mask. To be totally shallow about it all, it also looks cool. Alright? There, I said it.

I’ve ordered my own mask so the review will be along soon. If you can’t wait that long you can build your mask and order it directly from Closca today for €20. That includes 6 filters and you can but a pack of an additional 20 filters too. You’re also supporting those who need medical-grade masks too. It’s all win-win.

Western Digital My Cloud Home Review: Fix Your Full Dropbox

Recently I reviewed the new Huawei P40 Pro. Most people are getting caught up on the challenge people face with using a phone that doesn’t support Google Apps. I used it for weeks without much hassle. I’ve also managed up load Google onto it. Ultimately, for me, the P40 Pro is a fantastic phone and I wouldn’t let a lack of Google stand in my way of using it as my daily rider. It also opened up my eyes to how possible living outside a Google eco-system really was. Chrome became Firefox, Google Play Store made way for the Huawei AppGallery and Google Drive was replaced by Western Digital’s My Cloud Home.

What Is Western Digital My Cloud Home?

my cloud 8TB

The My Cloud Home is a hard drive which you connect to your home network. This means that you can save all your files to it when you’re at home and then access them when you’re out and about. This is made nice and simple, neat and tidy, by the My Cloud Home platform and apps.

For example, if you have your wedding photos saved to your My Cloud Home system, you could be visiting someone else’s house and show them a slideshow. If that’s a thing people do.

Why Buy A Western Digital My Cloud Home?

There are countless uses for the My Cloud Home system and some massive benefits. I’ve been using one for a few months and here are some of my favourite reasons why you should buy a My Cloud Home.

Fix That Full Dropbox Error

How many people are in this boat? You were in college and signed up for 2GB of Dropbox storage. Mainly it was because your mate needed another 500MB and they got it by referring you. Now, you’ve somehow ended up with 15GB of “stuff” in Dropbox and get regular emails annoying you to pay for the service.

Don’t get me wrong, Dropbox is a good service, but this is an annoying situation and you should have to pay for constant storage of old files you might never look at again.

The My Cloud platform and storage allows for a quick connection to Dropbox. That means, you just log in and connect the two services before My Cloud transfers the lot onto your own storage. You can then shut down your Dropbox and Bob’s your uncle.

Buy Devices With Lower Storage

My mobile data is unlimited. My home wifi is fast. I don’t really need a device with 256GB of storage. I recently bought an iPad and for the first time I didn’t just go for huge memory capacity. Instead, I saved myself a small fortune and bought the 32GB model. My reason being most of my data is now stored on my own cloud server at home. Once I have the app installed on my iPad, everything gets cleaned up on a regular basis and 32GB turns our to be plenty.

At the end of the day, My Cloud Home offers me 8TB of storage. That’s huge. So huge that that actually cut the capacity in half and use 4TB for storage and the other 4TB to back up for the first lot. It would be silly to spend more money on device storage and not make the most of my personal cloud setup.

Reduced Dependency On Cloud Storage Providers

Cloud storage is a great bit of tech. However, it survives on a horrible principle. Once you’ve used their free tier and need more storage, you’re agreeing to pay a small fee for fairly sizeable storage. The reason they do this is that they know you’ll probably be happy to spend a couple of euro a month to just not think about that extra memory you needed.

Here’s how much you would pay for cloud storage with the usual suspects:

Provider Storage Price
Apple iCloud 200GB €2.99
Apple iCloud 2TB €9.99
Google Drive 200GB €1.99
Google Drive 2TB €9.99
Dropbox 2TB €9.99
Box 100GB €4.50
Box Unlimited €13.50

Beyond this, Google offers 10TB of cloud storage for €99.99 per month. That’s a lot of money for a lot of storage. But I don’t really understand why you’d pay a monthly fee when Western Digital’s My Cloud Home would pay for itself in just three months.

Privacy

Taking back ownership of your data is certainly an emerging trend lately. Our trust in big tech like Google and Apple has taken some hits in recent years for one reason or another. My setting up your own cloud server at home with something simple and user friendly like the My Cloud Home, you do get a sense of taking the power back. It feels warm and fuzzy. At least I hope that’s the cloud storage.

Turn It Into An Entertainment Center

If you digitised all your favourite movies, because I’m not sure how else you would acquire movie files, your My Cloud Home becomes an entertainment centre. Connected with Plex, the system means you can stream movies from your home server to your phone, anywhere in the world once you have an internet connection. Pretty neat.

Download Everything From Facebook And Cut Ties

One of the smartest things Western Digital included is social media download. Just log into Facebook or Instagram and you can download everything. All your images and videos. Why? So you can go about quitting Facebook for good. It really is the ultimate device to cut ties with big tech you’ve lost faith in.

Western Digital My Cloud Home: The Verdict

Don’t let terms like “cloud storage” or “personal cloud server” put you off adopting something like the Western Digital My Cloud Home. I found the setup of the whole system fairly easy but not without the odd hiccup.

If you read the manuals and check out a YouTube video or two you’ll be able to get the most out of this cloud server. Download MyCloud app to your devices and log into a few accounts and you’ll soon be getting the very most out of your new purchase. Remember, the value is even bigger if you have a device with a small memory or are already paying for cloud storage from a big provider.

Pricing for the Western Digital My Cloud Home starts at €160 for a 2TB model and come in a variety of memory sizes, right up to 20TB for €859.

Is WD My Cloud Worth It?

Home cloud storage is hardly sexy stuff. Spending this kind of money wasn’t really on the cards a few years ago. But now you might just be paying for Apple Cloud storage or similar. If you do the maths, you’ll see that something like this is better value in the long term and offers more privacy. That’s always worth it.

Sennheiser Momentum 3 Wireless Headphones Review

0

People are investing more and more in audio equipment these days. It might be a by-product of travelling more, but noise-cancelling headphones capable of muting the like of aeroplane engines top of people’s shopping lists. For me, shopping for noise-cancelling headphones means you’re looking at the likes of Bose, Sony and Sennheiser. I’ve tested out the Sennheiser Momentum 3 Wireless Headphones and will now let you know if they’re worth your hard-earned cash.

Design

It’s a bit of a cop-out on my behalf to use the term premium to describe the Momentum 3 Wireless headphones. I can’t think of a better way to describe the overall look and feel. The headband features a classy padded leather making the top section very comfortable indeed. The cans themselves are soft and, against, comfy and are held in places with a clip slideable mount on brushed steel. It all leads to a very nice looking pair of headphones.

I did find the cable that runs from the headband to the cans a little odd. On a pair of headphones like this, it’s a vulnerability that stands out like a sore thumb but it doesn’t impact the functionality so I can live with it. There are some other design quirks which I found ruining my day to day usage of these headphones but maybe it’s better I cover those as functionality instead.

Functionality

I’ll talk about sound quality in a minute. I know it’s the most important thing, but spoiler alert, they’re brilliant. That’s why I’m going to talk about the functionality first.

Folding Power Switch

The Sennheiser Momentum 3 headphones offer a few other bits of functionality too. They fold away neatly in half and this action doubles as being the power control. Folded they’re closed and open they’re on and ready to go. It’s a handy feature but it does take some getting used to. I’ve come back to my desk a few times to see the headphones turned on and my battery empty.

Auto-Pause

Another feature, which should be great on paper, is the auto-pause sensors. When you take the headphones off the music pauses. Unfortunately, the reality is this feature annoys more than helps. I found that wearing glasses while working meant the headphone regularly thought they were no longer on my head and paused my music if I turned in the slightest of wrong directions. Thankfully you can disable this feature if you find yourself having a similar experience.

Find With Tile

Two pieces of kit I use regularly are the Chipolo and Tile. These are both Bluetooth tracking devices attached to my wallet and my keys. I’m that kind of guy. I use them once a week each and it’s usually in my apartment. It’s a little tougher to lose a pair of headphones but still, the Momentum 3 has Tile bits built-in. That means you can find your headphones nearby but also have others on the Tile network spot them if you lose them out and about.

Sound

And now we get to the business end of things. How do they sound? They sound as epic as you’d expect a pair of headphones at this price point. In fact, they might very well be the best-sounding headphones I’ve ever tested out. Here are the key areas of sound quality along with a bullshit buster intro to each section.

Bass

Bass is all about the deep and heavy stuff. Think the kick drum in a drum kit. Every time that kick hits, you want to hear the thump, precise and clear, but then have it quickly disappear.

As you might expect from a high end set of cans, the Momentum 3s offer punchy bass. That’s to say the bass levels hit hard, stay clear and don’t bleed into the other areas. Ultimately, this means you get the incredible sense of feeling the beat without losing clarity of vocals.

Mid

Mid is where you’ll hear vocals, guitars and piano come through, amongst other bits and pieces.

Owing to the tight and punchy bass, the mid is super clean on these headphones. Vocals remain nice and clear.

Treble

Some vocals and guitar will sneak into the treble, but this is really home to higher frequency sounds like cymbals from the drum kit. That doesn’t take away from the importance of crisp treble. In fact, for me, treble is the most important part of headphones because it completes the picture. Get treble wrong and everything just sounds dull and boring.

It’s nigh-on impossible to fault the sound quality of the Sennheiser Momentum 3 headphones.

Sound Tech

While lots of the sound quality is driven by incredible hardware, it’s supported by the latest software and hardware integrations. Most important for audiophiles is support for SBC, aptX, aptX Low Latency, and AAC. If you’ve got a phone which supports this kind of tech, it might be worth springing for Tidal to get the most from all your gadgets when listening to music.

Noise Cancelation

As you might expect, the Momentum 3s have Active Noise Cancellation. That means the headphones listen to your surroundings and play their own sounds, which you can’t hear, you intercept surrounding noise. The typical example to give where this is brilliant is flying. I remember the first time I took off ANC headphones and nearly had a panic attack when I heard how loud the plane was. It’s a life-changing feature.

using sennheiser momentum 3 on a flight

The Momentum 3s are a good pair of wireless ANC headphones. I’ve tested them on a long-haul flight to Seoul, long before lockdown last year, and I thought they were very good. However, in a makeshift test at home because of isolation they did disappoint. I was comparing them to the Bose QuietComfort 35 Series 2 headphones. The home test, if you’re interested, is to turn the extractor fan on over your cooker to full power. This is actually a decent replacement for a jet engine. The Sennheisers, if I’m honest, were rather disappointing. The Bose headphones pretty much removed the sound completely while the Momentum 3s left plenty to annoy me.

And this is the crux of the problem I have with the Momentum 3s. I’ve been comparing them to my beloved Bose headphones all along. While they can stand up to them in terms of audio quality, there’s just not enough there to justify going for the considerably more expensive pair of headphones.

Sennheiser Momentum 3: The Verdict

The Momentum 3 headphones retail right now for about €340 on Amazon.co.uk. For a tenner more you could pick them up in Harvey Norman. Straight off the bat, they’re expensive. When I get to this stage of the review, my opinion is formed. I go around the internet and check what other people are saying and this is one of the rare times I find myself completely at odds with so many others. These are being rated some of the best headphones on the market. And while I do agree, not enough people are providing the caveat that while good, there are much better ways to spend your money on headphones.

For €290 you could grab the mighty Sony WH-1000XM3 ANC headphones from Amazon UK. The biggest fault to be found with those is the touch controls and silly naming convention. I would recommend my own Bose headphones but they would set you back the same as the Sony headphones and you wouldn’t get USB-C. The truth is, if you can find either the Sony or Bose headphones on sale for a reduced price, the latter being more likely, you’d be bagging a bargain. If you pick up the Sennheiser Momentum 3, I can’t really see how you’ve done anything more than spend more than you’ve had to.

Micromobility: UK Government To Fast Track Legalisation Of Electric Scooters

I think we can all agree the UK has been on one hell of a combo streak of cock-ups lately. I’m not going to dwell on those because today they’ve taken a simple step which has left me just a tiny bit jealous would you believe. Originally planned to be made legal in 2021, the UK Government has taken steps to trial electric scooters on UK roads as early as June this year.

Electric Scooters And The Law In Ireland

I’m the owner of a Xiaomi m365 electric scooter. I adore it, but I haven’t ridden it in months. The reason for that is Gardai pulled over a scooter rider and charged him with driving a mechanically propelled vehicle without insurance. He had his day in court and the judge slapped him with a fine and 5 penalty points. He was treated the same way someone driving a 2-tonne car without insurance would be treated.

Personally, I think electric scooters are the solution to many of Dublin’s problems, if not transport problems of many other cities. I’ve believed for as long as I’ve seen electric scooters zipping around the capital. Our public transport is a little bit rubbish and I’ve seen plenty of full buses refuse to stop at stops. The electric scooter gave a viable alternative to all of these problems and more. But after thousands purchased the scooters believing they were in a legal grey area, the RSA requested the Gardai update their website. This was all done rather quietly and overnight a loophole vanished and Gardai began seizing scooters and treating their owners like uninsured drivers.

To be totally clear here, the problem isn’t the Gardai. It’s the laws not being suitable for modern transport solutions. Shane Ross was slow to get a report commissioned and completed, but that report did eventually recommend legalising the scooters. But it never came into law. Gardai were interpreting the laws a certain way and were legally seizing scooters. Without a Dail, it looks unlikely that anything would happen with scooters any time soon. And then Covid-19 landed.

The Best Time To Encourage Electric Scooter Use Is Now

I’ve stepped over my scooter in the hall a few times since I stopped riding it. It breaks my heart because it’s not only practical but fun. I went to work on a Monday with a smile on my face, looking forward to a quick spin across town. When was the last time you really looked forward to the drive, Luas, bus or Dart to work?

Just before this whole Covid-19 thing got really serious, buses were crammed with people in Dublin. I’m not entirely sure we can ever go back to a time where our city’s public transport is that crammed. I’m not sure people will even accept that like we use to. While some are out of work and others are working from home, now is the time to plan a viable alternative to over-capacity public transport networks. Electric scooters offer that very solution.

Even today, you’ll see hundreds of electric scooters making their way around Dublin. Gardai have been policing them very inconsistently. The result hasn’t been people assuming they are legal. Instead, people have bought the scooters without any knowledge that their legality was under question. Electric scooters offer a way of making your way around a congested city without having to use public transport. That means you get to travel in the “fresh” air.

UK Makes A Move

Surprisingly, the UK Government actually made a move today on this. They had policed electric scooters much more strictly that we’ve seen in Ireland. However, the benefits of personal electric transport in removing people from congested public transport has led to a moment of clarity.

Plans to trial electric scooters in the UK were laid out to take place in 2021. However, given the spread of Covid-19, the UK Government has decided to fast track these trails. Next month, under the title of Micromobility, these trials will now begin across the whole country. The UK is going to take a adopt and adapt instead of trying to get it “right first time”. In the report, Rachel Maclean, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, asks “how can e-scooters make life cheaper, more convenient, and maybe a bit more exciting?”.

While that might sound a little haphazard, it’s a welcome alternative to the usual red-tape government decisions must go through. Right now, governments need to take action and if we are to start lifting restrictions, introducing legalisation of electric scooters in Ireland would be a fantastic development.

Even more surprising is the inclusion of electric scooter rental programmes. These will also be allowed on UK roads from June. I remain more apprehensive about these schemes operating in small cities like Dublin. However, in recent weeks cycling infrastructure has begun to spring up around the city, suggesting local government already knows that increased volumes of cycling should be both expected and encouraged. With the right infrastructure, maybe rental systems could work here too.

What UK Scooter Trials Will Focus On

Rather interestingly, the report which documents what micromobility trials will focus on comes across as selling the concept more than questioning it. Included in the report are notes on environmental benefits, reduced congestion, integrating journeys (think the broken Luas lines) and also considerations around pedestrianised areas and cycle lane usage.

Is almost a certainty that scooters will become legal in Ireland. They offered incredible benefits over regular public transport before Covid-19 and as we adapt to living with Coronavirus, electric scooter seem to make even more sense. Of course, one of the biggest challenged faced right now will be the lack of a government to amend legislation but perhaps instead of the current Minister for Transport, Charlie Flannagan, could suggest more lenient interpretations of old laws while this gets sorted. Only time will tell what actually happens, but here’s hoping that logic prevails.

Google Launches Nest Wifi: Get Better Internet Speeds At Home

How aware are you of your internet speed right now? With the world in isolation, we’re all staying surprisingly connected. That is, once you have a decent internet connection. Whether it’s a video call with family or dialling into a work meeting, the internet has become more important than ever. Google has conveniently just launched their new Google Nest WiFi in Ireland and it promises to deliver better WiFi in your home. Google sent me over a kit last week to test out and here’s what I think so far.

What Is Google Nest Wifi?

Google Nest Wifi is a small kit designed to improve your internet connection at home. Similar to the Google Wifi I tested out a few years back, Nest Wifi can extend wifi connectivity in the home, but also improve signal too.

Don’t get me wrong, if you have terrible internet speeds there’s only so much the Nest Wifi kit can do. But if you have decent internet speed and a specific room where there’s weak or poor signal, then this might be the solution you’re looking for.

When the system is set up, one Google box next to your modem takes your internet connection and flings it across the house to a second point. From here the signal gets taken in and spit back out again. The benefit of this two-point setup is that you can extend your wifi connection across a larger area. This is called a wifi mesh because it’s like an invisible net of connectivity being spread across your home. There are also benefits in small areas. More on that later.

What You Get In The Box

There are a couple of options when it comes to buying your kit. Most will need the kit Google sent me. That’s a Google Nest Wifi router with an additional point. If you’re in a small apartment, just the router is enough. If you have a big house or maybe want to spread your wifi to a second building, you’ll want to load up on the additional points.

Also in the box is two plugs and a LAN cable. There’s a quick start booklet too, but the whole setup is quite straight forward. Just remember to download the Google Home app to your phone or tablet and you’re ready to rock and roll.

One important point when setting up. The Nest Wifi router point plugs into the modem your internet provider sent you with a LAN cable. If like me, you have a lot of stuff plugged into your modem via LAN, the Nest Home router also has a LAN out port. If that means nothing to you, don’t worry about it. For me, it’s crucial because I don’t lose a LAN port. For most, it’s probably not important.

When To Use Google Nest Wifi

There are two perfect scenarios to use a product like the Google Nest Wifi. Normally, I’d have tested both of these.

  1. My Mam’s house. Old house with really thick walls
  2. My apartment. Really small space surrounded by dozens of wifi connections.

I tested out the original Google Wifi device in my Mam’s house and it worked incredibly well. Unfortunately, with the current restrictions, I can’t test drive the new Nest product there but I will eventually. During the setup, the rule of thumb Google gives you is to not place the extra point more than two rooms away from the nearest point so hopefully, that gives you some idea of what it can do.

I did get to test it out in my apartment and was nearly more surprised that I saw fairly impressive results here too.

Benefits Of Google Nest Wifi In Small Apartments

If you’ve been paying terrifyingly close attention to where I live, you might be wondering why I need a wifi mesh system. The truth is, I didn’t. I really just needed the router unit because I don’t have the square footage to challenge the spread of my wifi signal. I am in an apartment surrounded by other apartments, so wifi signal congestion is the problem. There are dozens of similar modems clogging the airwaves and Nest Wifi offers a solution.

Dynamic Channel Selection

When someone like Virgin Media or Eir send you out a modem it’s set to work on a specific channel. That means when your home is surrounded by dozens of other modems the channels can become congested. Your devices get confused trying to work out what’s what.

Nest Wifi is much more than just hardware. The software Google bakes into the mix is constantly doing it’s best to keep your connection strong, reliable and fast. This includes dynamically swapping channels when one gets too noisy. Google promises that this will reduce the number of times you’re left turning your modem on and off after losing connection.

It’s funny they mention it because I have been having a torrid time with my internet lately and for the past week since installing Nest Wifi the connection has certainly gotten better.

Faster Internet Speeds

There’s a moment in every review where a product wins me over. I remain critical, but there’s one thing where a manufacturer backs up what they’re doing by delivering on a promise. With the Nest Wifi it was faster internet.

I’m connected to a super-fast Virgin Media modem. Let’s be honest, it’s fast enough for anyone. After several benchmarking tests, my stock Virgin Media modem was delivering  230 Mbps. I’m sorry to everyone down the country now cursing me for being impressed that I improved on that. But when I set up the Nest Wifi system, my average speed increased by 4% to 240 Mbps.

What I want to demonstrate here isn’t that I would generally notice that improvement. I wouldn’t have only for I tested it. Instead, what I want to get across here is that the Nest Wifi system did make a significant impact. Back when I was living down the country I was doing my best to squeeze every Mbps from my network so that 4% hits me deep.

My Virgin Media plan is actually limited to 240 Mb too which makes me wonder. If I went to a higher package, would it get faster without the Nest Wifi? Or perhaps, Nest Wifi helps get the absolute most out of my connection?

Other Nest Wifi Features

As I said, I couldn’t really test the expansive range of the kit. I also don’t have kids and can’t have guests over right now so you’ll have to take my word for it on these features.

Parental Controls

On paper, this is beautiful. I assume parents will love it. If your kids have tablets or games consoles, you can assign their device to them. You know have control over their digital lives. I say that with a certain sense of over-dramatics. You can’t read any of their emails or see what they post to Tiktok. You can disconnect their tablet or console from the internet when it’s study or dinner time.

Better still, you can put their devices on a schedule so 7 pm is clean-up time knowing that 8 pm is internet back on time. Once the work is done! Naturally, you can also block adult content too. Nice bit of control for parents built-in.

Guest Wifi

When we’re back having guests over, no more will there be the 5 minutes of trying to get them online. Nest Wifi lets you create a dedicated guest network where you can keep visitors off your primary network. This is a nice feature for me as I have my own Western Digital Personal Cloud NAS server that I really don’t want any prying eyes taking a look at.

If you have something like a Chromecast you can even pull up a QR code so all your dinner guests need to do is scan your telly. Personally, I’d recommend no internet once we get back to normal dinner parties, but convenience is always nice.

It’s A Google Home Too

I didn’t notice this immediately! The additional point installed in the bedroom is doing more than just expanding the connection and cleaning up signal. It’s also a Google Assistant and speaker. Pretty neat!

It’s Pretty

This isn’t all that silly a point to make. I’ll admit my Virgin Media modem is pretty nice, but many modems are horrendous. If you’ve got a stylish gaff, the last thing you want is an ugly modem. What do you do? You hide it. The knock-on effect is crappy internet because of the muffled signal.

Google has put some time and effort into the design of these devices so you’ll feel more comfortable putting their somewhere they work well. You can plug the cable into your ugly old modem and leave that where ever you like!

Google Stadia

If you’ve made the leap to trying out Google Stadia, which is offering a free trial right now, you’ll also like the priority lane feature of Nest Wifi. Basically, it means you can give Stadia gaming a priority position on the network to ensure you don’t experience avoidable lag.

Google Nest Wifi: The Verdict

I’m very impressed by Nest Wifi. It has given me some questions I need to bring to Virgin Media too. It’s interesting that I can only get the capacity of my connection when using a third-party device in the Google Nest Wifi. I’m really interested to try up the network speeds and see what I can squeeze out of it. Keep an eye out for that update!

But all-in-all, it’s a very aesthetically pleasing piece of tech to have in the home delivering some very real results.

While that would suggest Nest Wifi is going to help me get value for money, we do stumble upon my biggest criticism of the whole setup. Damn, it’s expensive. The kit Google sent me is worth €259. Just the router would be €159 and the additional point is €139. I ended up setting up another cheap wifi mesh system in my Mam’s gaff and it works brilliantly. That system costs less than €80.

That system isn’t as pretty. It’s not as user friendly. It doesn’t offer the parental controls or integrate seamlessly with your Google Home App. It also doesn’t have an integrated Google Assistant. For some, that’s a benefit. For others, it makes no difference. Then there are the people who read that list of things that the Nest Wifi offers and they’ve forgotten the price. If that’s you, you will not be disappointed with this setup and the impact it has on your home connectivity. If you’re on the fence, it’s definitely worth a punt. The system can grow with you too. It’s reverse compatible with Google Wifi and can have additional points added to it as you go.

You can buy this kit directly from the Google Store.

Watch Dear Ireland: The Abbey Theatre’s Historic Digital Theatre Project

I think we can all agree this Covid-19 thing sucks. It’s a cliche, but every cloud does have a silver lining. As much of a tech advocate as I’ve been over the years, seeing people of all ages appearing in video call screenshots has been heartwarming. While I’m not for one second suggesting this is better than the way things were, never before has being isolated also seen everyone so connected. I’ve heard many say they’ve never been so connected to some friends and family.

Let’s go further. I know many of you are always busy. Maybe you work late shifts or have sports training. And maybe that means you can’t enjoy some things like the theatre. Tonight, thanks to the Abbey Theatre, that changes as they stream a new composition on YouTube called Dear Ireland.

What Is Dear Ireland?

Over four nights (28 April – 1 May), 50 brand new monologues will be streamed on YouTube, commissioned by the Abbey Theatre as a rapid response to the COVID-19 crisis. Each piece of work was written and created in self-isolation by 100 participating artists.

It’s an experimental first for both the Abbey Theatre and many of the artists involved, in the producing and presenting of theatre through digital channels whilst the ongoing pandemic keeps theatre-makers and audiences from the stage. As I said at the outset, many have turned to technology during these trying times and the theatre is no different.

Who Is In Dear Ireland?

Some of the best-known names involved in Dear Ireland include Blindboy from The Rubber Bandits, Emmet Kirwan from RIOT! and Dublin Old School and the very well known Brendan Gleeson from everything that’s ever been excellent.
