WarOnCancer: An online space to learn and heal

0

Cancer is likely to have affected you at some stage in your life. Whether it was your own diagnosis or that of a family member, it’s become an unfortunate fact of life. WarOnCancer provides an online space for people dealing with cancer to share their stories.

What’s the idea behind WarOnCancer?

Swedish-Brazilian actor Fabian Bolin had just moved to America after landing two big roles. He began to feel exhausted but put this tiredness down to his hectic lifestyle. After near passing out on his way to Stansted he decided it was time to visit a doctor. This visit led to a diagnosis of Leukemia, a form of blood cancer. As is typical these days, Fabian turned to the internet for answers, answers he struggled to find.

Feeling frustrated, Fabian vented in a  Facebook post, a post shared over 27,000 times.

Supported by his friend Sebastian Hermelin, Fabian began work on the concept behind WarOnCancer.

What is WarOnCancer?

WarOnCancer started out with bracelets. The aim was simply to raise money to fund cancer research. Fabian and Sebastian quickly realised cancer patients needed both information and an outlet. In early 2016, discussions began about creating an online storytelling space.

Within this space, cancer patients vent, heal and discuss their own personal journeys. Family members can also share their real life journey. Intricate detail on specific journey comes to the fore, pushing overwhelming medical jargon to the side. WarOnCancer itself lets users find stories based on a range of queries they can relate to. You can discover stories based on gender, relation to the patient and cancer type, to name but a few.

How does WarOnCancer help?

Fabian Bolin speaking at Dublin Tech SummitEach story is personal and individual. Titles range from “Fuck Cancer” to “My Fight” and provide insight from a human point of view. You can still read Fabian’s own story, which is a great example of the detail provided by firsthand experience.

Cancer doesn’t have to be the end of a life. It can be the start of a new one – Fabian Bolin

For patients and their families early in the journey WarOnCancer is a great learning resource. For those telling the stories, sharing experiences acts as a form of therapy.

Currently, there are two Irish WarOnCancer stories. As a nation, we are slow to speak out and express ourselves when we have problems. Hopefully, as WarOnCancer grows, more Irish people share their stories. In doing so, they will be helping others and themselves.

Rumuki: Keep making a sex tape private

0

If you’re looking to add a little spice to your love life, little will hit the spot like making a sex tape. And sure come on, everyone has an HD camera on their smartphone these days. In truth, smartphones are the problem as anything you create is extremely shareable. Rumuki is a new app that makes recording intimate moments more private.

Why would you need Rumuki when making a sex tape?

There are a few well-known people who would answer this question for you fairly quickly. Among the best known are Kim Kardashian, Hulk Hogan and most recently Amir Khan. They’ve all had some sort of sex tape leaked online. None of them thought their steamy intimate moments would be seen by the world. Unfortunately, loads of us have now seen Hulk Hogan’s arse involved in a very different type of wrestling.

hulk hogan rips off shirtFor most, the fear surrounds experimenting with video. Sure, when you’re with someone you think it’ll last forever. One bad breakup later and you’re left in fear knowing they have a video of you in the nip.

How does Rumuki make things any better?

keep making a sextape privateRumuki is a simple app with some genius features. First, record your night of passion using the app. As your partner lies back and sparks up, you can pair your phone to theirs using a QR code. Each phone stores the video locally and protects it with a unique secure key.

you need permission from your partner in crime

To watch the video back, you need permission from your partner in crime. One of you can’t watch it without the other granting permission. This means that should you break up or simply decide you don’t want that video to exist anymore, you just need to delete your key.

I don’t want team Rumuki looking at my arse

Don’t worry, they don’t want that either. Everything you record is saved locally to your phone and never sits on Rumuki servers. Even if they were hacked, your intimate moments will remain private. And if you’re worried about some sort of Ashley Madison style hack, fear not. You don’t need to sign up with social media accounts or emails.

Download Rumuki for iOS to get peace of mind while spicing up your sex life. Now you only have to deal with the more traditional objections to making a sex tape like “no we’ll look ridiculous”.

Hater: A Tinder alternative for miserable sods

0

As the only single member of the Goos3D team and with the big V-Day just around the corner, the search for a date is well and truly on the way. If you’ve swiped your dating app dry, Hater offers a great Tinder alternative. Instead of being impressed by a glance at a profile, Hater users get matched by common hates. Perfect for all your single and cynical mates.

Unrealistic expectations

Those horrible, horrible rom-com flicks would have us think that relationships are built on things like happiness, respect and trust. But what they always forget is a mutual hatred of the same things. In fact, in my humble opinion, it’s totally fine to fall in love with someone based on a shared disinterest or hatred of the same things. It could be movies, TV shows or people, the list is endless.

Give in to your inner-grump and download Hater. Finally, there’s a dating app that doesn’t encourage charm, sunshine and happiness. You can now sidestep being matched with someone based on a quick physical attraction, all thanks to Hater.

A Tinder alternative with more than just swiping right

Once you’ve downloaded the app you are asked to give your opinion on a range of topics. You select how you feel by swiping in different directions, not just right. The app will then create a profile of all the users and begin matching you with people with similar mindsets. A simple app which aims to go beyond the physical and match people on something far more important than getting the right selfie angle.

If you’re looking for a date this Valentines Day why not give Hater a shot. Available on iOS now with Android to follow soon.

Quick side note: I’m also available this Valentines to see the Lego Batman movie if anyone’s interested.

Best travel apps for surviving your journey around the world

0
In December, I took a big step that a lot of young people in Ireland have been doing in the past few years. I quit my job, packed up, a went to Australia for a year. For those of you who are thinking about it, I can tell you that yes, it is scary but so worth it. After 3 months, I’ve been to some awesome places. I’ve found a decent paying job, and most importantly, made some great friends.

But all this wouldn’t have been possible without technology. How people back in the day did this without it amazes me. So I’ve put together a list of travel apps that won’t only help you travel Australia, but most of the world.

Google Maps

This one is arguably the most obvious and essential of travel apps. Yes, it comes pre-installed on Android, but you can delete it if you need a bit of extra space. You will use this almost every day on your travels. It shows the quickest routes to get to places whether it’s on foot, by car, or by public transport. Recent updates added taxi services like Hailo and Uber in certain countries. Google Maps also gives you times for trains and buses so you get to your destination when you intend to.
maps and the best travel apps
The best feature is WiFi downloads. In the hotel, you can download the map data for a massive area so a lack of data can’t stop you. If you need a bit of extra space, delete a couple of other apps you don’t need. First head on the block might be Play Newsstand, Play Games or Play Movies and TV. But do not touch your precious maps, the most essential of travel apps.

WiFi Finder

If you’re like me and go travelling with a locked phone and can’t get a SIM card, this app is a God send. It is extremely difficult to find free WiFi in Australia. The restaurants don’t give you WiFi. The bars don’t give you WiFi. My own job with a company who sells WiFi doesn’t give you WiFi. Having WiFi is the only way I can contact people right now, generally through Facebook. So this is a handy app to have, especially if you’re travelling alone. It is also is compatible in 144 countries. Some iPhone users might have spotted this appearing in the Facebook app.

Zomato

Again, I can’t speak for all countries, but Australia is a very, very expensive place. If you’re going out for dinner, for a main course alone you’re looking at over $30. A full meal for 2 it’s easily over $100. For a pint in most places, you’re looking at $12 give or take. So let me introduce you to Zomato, another God send, particularly for us Irish. Zomato gives you a list of BYOB restaurants in Oz. That’s right, you can bring your own beer to restaurants. Land in, order your food and crack open your bottle of beer or wine you bought in you local offie. The savings are obvious as the offie is usually half the price you’d pay at most restaurants. Zomato offers different cuisines, indoor, outdoor and price range. And it also gives you rating system and reviews. If you like dining out, Zomato is your best friend.

Tripadvisor/AirBnB

Two similar apps here which can be particularly handy for the backpackers out there. These apps give you a selection of accommodation available at your destination. You’ll also have prices, ratings and reviews at hand. Even if you are coming over for a year, it’s still nice to have these handy if you plan on a few weekends away in Australia. Or if you decide to get a flight to Vietnam and do a Top Gear job on a couple of bikes through the country. Which brings me to my next app.

Skyscanner

There are some decent deals out there for flights if you’re willing to look hard enough. Skyscanner does all the work for you. If you’re travelling Europe, you could get from one country to another for under €100. Same goes for Asia. And if you’re in Australia, getting from Perth to Brisbane can cost you almost $300. Booking a few weeks ahead could save you a decent few quid. Travel apps that save money are great

Instagram

If you are going to go to all these places, you might as well make a few people jealous while you’re at it. You can put up your pics, daily stories and even live stream on your feed. Throw in a few hashtags and who knows? You might become one of those people who starts getting paid to travel the world. My username is Deanahern92 if you want to see what you’re missing out on.

Mobile banking app

The last thing you need is to run out of money from reckless spending while seeing the world. All those landmarks, new restaurants and buying $12 pints add up. This is handy to keep track of your funds and apply for emergency loans if it gets to that point.

drunk ATM usageSpotify

This one I can’t stress enough. Getting to Australia is no walk in the park. I had an hour long flight to a Heathrow, a 13-hour flight to Hong Kong and a 7-hour flight to Perth. I didn’t think I’d make it there alive knowing I had a 7-hour flight ahead of me after a 13 hour one. Granted, there are films on the flights. But a lot of travelling involves long bus journeys that don’t give you the luxury of movies. Also, if you plan on interrailing or backpacking, music can be a release from the loneliness you can feel. Spotify is a game changer. Which brings me to my next and final app.

Netflix

Since Netflix has now given us downloadable movies, this is possibly the very best travel app out there. Netflix can be a life saver on those long bus trips. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the luxury of this on my way over. But if you plan on taking a trip anytime soon, make sure you load up on a few films and series. Don’t get me wrong, travelling is fun, but it can be boring. Having shows to watch could be the difference between you going home or keeping the party going.

So there you have it. The best travel apps to make sure you don’t end up in the fetal position on a side street in Indonesia asking for your mommy to send you funds to stay in a bug ridden hotel for a night.

But in all seriousness, coming to Australia is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. If you’re stuck in a job that you hate, finished college and want to find yourself, or need a break from the same old clubs and pubs you’ve been going to since you were 18, just do it. Don’t think about it. Save some cash, quit your job or take some time off and pack up your things and go. As I said before, I’ve made some great friends. I’ve been on secluded beaches on islands I didn’t even know existed and snorkelled with clown fish. I can go to a different beach every weekend within an hours drive. And I’ve a freakin’ pool in my back garden.

I can finally say, ‘I’m living the life.’

The Dublin Tech Summit speakers you won’t want to miss

0

Dublin Tech Summit (DTS) is kicking off it’s first year, filling the gap that was left by Web Summit’s move to Lisbon. Off the bat, it’s not in the RDS, so you’ll have to plan a little differently. To help you get prepped, we’re take a look at the Dublin Tech Summit speakers you won’t want to miss.

Gary Vaynerchuk

Wine and tech have plenty of connections. A lot more than DTS attendees will be downing during the After Hours “networking” events. Back in 1999, Gary Vaynerchuk took over his father’s off licence. Combining innovative digital marketing with aggressive pricing, Vaynerchuck was making $50 million a year selling cans by 2005. By cans I mean nice wine. Today, Vaynerchuk has made a fortune as a serial entrepenuer. He’s invested in Uber, Twitter and Facebook to name but a few. Not one to be found idle, he also heads up VaynerMedia with his brother.

Vaynerchuk is a polarising speaker. He makes a ton of video content online, is in your face and downright agressive. Still, a man with DNA like Vaynerchuk probably deserves to be listened to.

Vaynerchuk takes to the stage on 15 February at 15:00 and again at 15:30

Cindy Gallop

CEO of makelovenotporn.com, Cindy Gallop is guarenteed to be one of the most interesting speakers at DTS. The self-proclaimed “Michael Bay of business” because she “likes to blow shit up”, she’s a TED Talks vetern. Gallop will be speaking at DTS about distrupting sex in tech. makelovenotporn.com sets out to despunk debunk myths about sex that have been generated by porn.

speaker at Dublin Tech SummitHer “pro-sex, pro-porn and pro-knowing the difference” approach has even led to makelovenotporn.tv being created. That’s a site where every day people can turn a profit and become MakeLoveNotPornstars. This is really one of DTS’s speakers you won’t want to miss.

Gallop takes to the stage on 16 February at 14:10 and again 14:40

Till Faida

AdBlock software is always considered to be something that the techie types care about. Believe it or not, this couldn’t be further from the truth. A recent study by Page Fair shows that Irish users are among the highest AdBlock users in Europe. A stunning 39% of Irish internet users are blocking ads online. This is why AdBlock CEO Till Faida makes the cut for speakers you don’t want to miss. Sure, a rake of digital marketers will be there but it’s a facinating insight into what’s being done to serve you with ads. Expect Faida to detail alternatives to outright blocking of ads too.

Faida takes to the stage on 16 Feburary 11:30 and again at 11:50

There are plenty of others you won’t want to miss. Of course, you could just follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook. We’ll be covering the best bits live from DTS 2017 on 15 and 16 February.

Jameson have the craic with connected bottles of whiskey

0

Connected bottles of whiskey. You know, there’s a list of thing you don’t think you’ll ever have to say. Connected bottles of whiskey is such a mad combination of words, that doesn’t even make that list. Sure enough, Jameson have only gone and done the unthinkable.

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in style

Every year, Jameson commisions an artist to design a limited edition label for their whiskey to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. This year, they turned to Steve McCarthy to do the honors. McCarthy’s beautiful ommage to Dublin more than just suits the classic whiskey’s look. Still, as beautiful as it is, it’s not why we’re here.

Connected bottles of whiskey

Jameson release connected bottles of whiskeyOkay, so straight away you’re probably thinking it’s a bottle that speeds up Spotify playlists as the night goes on. That’s not it, but I’m making a mental note of how great an idea that is. Jameson’s limited edition connected bottle has an NFC tag underneath the Jameson logo. NFC (near field communications) tags interact with smartphones, namely Android phones as iPhone doesn’t support NFC. Still, opting for NFC is a very logical move. Alternatives, such as QR codes, needs third party apps which very few people have.

Benefits of the smart bottle

On the surface, Jameson’s efforts may look quite simple. And to be honest, they are. But, if you walk to to most people in the street and ask if their phone has NFC they’ll have no idea what you’re on about. Jameson’s smart bottle is a fun way of introducing people to a longstanding, but little known, piece of tech in NFC. This year could be a big year for NFC with AIB and KBC bringing Android Pay to market.

Still, simple as it may be, the NFC tag on these limited edition connected whiskey bottles could bag you a nice prize. Whiskey drinkers could instantly win a pair of tickets to the Jameson Distillery or be entered into a draw for the Ultimate Jameson Experience in Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day.

Hopefully there are more companies who try out things like this in the future. Introducing alcohol is the one sure-fire way to get people using more features on their smartphones. We will also be just as happy to sample other products utilising new tech like this!

InvizBox Go Review: Irish startup bringing online privacy to the masses

0

If there is one thing you start to take seriously in 2017 make it your online privacy. Irish startup InvizBox are making protecting your online privacy easier than ever with InvizBox Go.

Why is online privacy so important?

First of all, we’re not trying to put the fear of God into you. The internet simply demands a healthy respect. You can now find cheap accomodation with Airbnb and skip the queues in banks. The convenience of online has paved the way for faster and better ways of doing things. But perhaps things have become a little too convenient. You consume a crazy amount of data when you’re out and about. Irish smartphone users consume an average of 3.4 GB per month. And that’s not even including WiFi.

Shopping centres, cafés, airports and bars are just some of the most popular places you’ll now find public WiFi. These places now people expect WiF these days and that it’s likely to factor in your opinion of the place. Now, did they even have a WiFi password? Probably not, because logging in is too much of an inconvenience isn’t it?

Public WiFi is dangerous

Public WiFi is dangerous because would-be-hackers can position themselves between you and the internet. Sifting through data, they can gather your personal information and use it against you. Thankfully, it’s now super easy to combat this.

VPNs are the safe way to use public WiFi

People are connecting to public WiFi for one big reason – convenience. To combat the dangers, we’re going to need a pretty convenient security solution. We’ve already gone over how VPNs can keep you safe but now we can tell you the best way of going about getting one. First, we looked at Anonabox. Anonabox works perfectly fine, but their system would be really hard for non-techies to grasp. Considering how the world and its mother uses public WiFi, a more user-friendly option was badly needed. We waited patiently and came across InvizBox Go.

InvizBox Go

InvizBox Go protects online privacyIrish company InvizBox Go came about through Kickstarter. After a successful campaign, the team have just shipped first orders to customers. We were lucky enough to get our hands on the InvizBox Go, so what’s it like?

Security

There’s actually plenty on offer here from the InvizBox Go, but let’s start with the real reason it exists – security. The box offers two ways to protect your privacy online. First is through a VPN. Do you remember in secondary school where teachers told you you’d never have a calculator with you all the time? And how silly that is considering your smartphone does everything? Internet security leaders Kaspersky said a similar thing about VPNs. While believing VPNs are one of the most secure ways to browse the web, they also conceed you’re not likely to have a VPN handy for general browsing. Sure enough, just as the smartphone did for calculators, InvizBox Go bridges the gap making use of VPNs much easier.

InvizBox Go bridges the gap making use of VPNs much easier

Secondly, the InvizBox Go lets you easily connect to the Tor network, an open source anonymous network. Tor is fantastic for protecting your online privacy, but that’s a full day of research and fun in itself. Lets continue looking at the box.

Geoblocking workarounds

When using VPNs you usually have the option of virtually moving your location. Sure enough, this is great for security but also for entertainment. Let me set the scene. It’s All Ireland weekend but you’re on holidays. Strangely, there’s no Irish bar so you turn to your smartphone. RTÉ are blocking the RTÉ Player app on your phone because you’re outside Ireland. Thanks to your easy to access VPN, you could just pop into the local coffee shop with your tablet and InvizBox Go. Connecting to an Irish VPN you will be able to access RTÉ Player and watch Kilkenny romp to victory.

Of course, the big win here could be Netflix. Due to licensing and other legal non-sense, Netflix is different in many countries and regions. A quick look at US Netflix will really whet your appetite for some fresh content. The InvizBox Go could potentially help you access loads of videos on US Netflix. It’s not currently possible, but we expect to see that come in down the line.

WiFi extender

If you’re staying in an old house, you’ll feel my pain here. You are going to bed and realise that the WiFi signal can’t get through the nuclear bunker like walls you have. If you live there, you’ll likely find a more permanent solution. If you’re visiting, pop your InvizBox Go between your room and the WiFi to extend coverage in your house.

Powerbank

Everyone has a powerbank these days right? We’re complaining less about battery life anyway so I presume that’s it. With convenience in mind, the InvizBox Go has been designed to charge your device while it secures you too. The team claim it’ll easily charge your phone at least once.

Verdict

Having tried out similar products and similar VPN services, InvizBox Go is the easiest and most user-friendly approach to protecting your online privacy. The team told us that they paid particular attention to the user interface when they were building the box. It really shows from setup through to daily use.

InvizBox Go is just an easy to use way of protecting your online privacy. If you find yourself travelling between public WiFi connections in hotels or airports, you should really pick yourself something like the InvizBox Go. Get it over on their site with pricing starting at €99. That includes two months access to a VPN too.

iPhone 10: 10 things to keep an eye out for with the next iPhone

0

In 2017 something strange will happen as Apple iPhone will be turning 10 years old. The iPhone 7s or iPhone 10 brings rumours suggesting this year’s version is heading towards a radical redesign.

After scanning the internet for a fair chunk of time, here are 10 things we reckon could happen with this special anniversary iPhone.

Not an iPhone 7s but something totally different

From 4 to 4s, 5 to 5s and so on so forth. Each iPhone has been equipped with a corresponding “s” model launch. But not this time. Nope, this year we skip the 7s and jump straight to the 8, or the iPhone 10. Could we even get the iPhone X (roman numeral for 10) just shake things up a bit? With Apple shares falling drastically in the last year or so and this obviously special occasion we wouldn’t be surprising if Apple did something a little different.

Potentially an all display surface?

John Gruber is a well-known Apple blogger and his podcast, Daring Fireball, is normally a well-informed source on everything iPhone. Well anyway, he claims from his “sources” that the iPhone10 (that’s what we are calling it now) won’t have any bevel, border, buttons or anything of that sort. Simply one large display. Wonder how that get’s around having a front facing camera.

iPhone 10 goes back to glass

Another chap who seems to be in the know is Apple analyst Ming Chi Kou. This lad more often than not predicts the latest Apple aesthetics and this time around he reckons an Aluminium framework with a glass rear and the prior mentioned screen would hark back to the iPhone4-4s style of design.  Which means a decent case will be a must. Remember how those yokes smashed.

Three models instead of two

There are a few alternating rumours floating about there being a third high-end instalment this time around as the iPhone and iPhone Plus could end up with a little or bigger brother.

One model being touted is claiming a 5.8” display (so an iPad mini?) with the other more along the lines of the 5S/ SE with a 4.5- 5” screen, both of which would be framed with stainless steel rather than aluminium in order to make the handset more durable which we are sure is something all iPhone 10 users would love to see.

Goodluck and thanks to the home key

So if the rumour about the all display interface is anything to go by, it would be safe to assume the home key is going to vanish leaving the iPhone 10 as a completely buttonless phone. While there are plenty of phones with soft key interfaces one source claims that the home button including the fingerprint scanner will actually be embedded into the front glass panel, So it will still be there but we won’t be able to see it. Bit strange and if this comes to pass invest in some high-end cases because while a cracked LCD is a pain right now, any crack to the display on this will render the phone useless until repair. So don’t say you weren’t told.

The headphone jack will remain a thing of the past

Look, to put it bluntly, the removal of the headphone jack annoyed a few folks in the iPhone 7 because unlike USB-C, the lightning charger is not exactly universal but it would be safe to say now that it is gone it will stay gone. Sorry but that’s just the way it is

Wireless charging could be a thing

Samsung have been floating this idea around for a few years and to be honest this form of charging is not exactly “wireless” the charging pad which the phone  must lay upon still must be plugged, but sure at least it means we can charge the battery and have lighting headphones plugged in at the same time. A nice little addition, not exactly ground breaking but interesting to see how Apple pull this off.

No dual lens for non-Plus models

This one we aren’t totally sold on and we would think it unfair if Apple were to leave the dual lens camera to just the plus series. However initial reports say this will be the case, but if we were to bet right now the iPhone 6s Plus had optical image stabilisation which did in fact trickle down to the iPhone 7 regular model this year. A glimmer of hope if nothing else.

Super sexy screen

Again taking a leaf out of the Samsung book ( seems to be a trend eh ) this year’s newest iPhone will have an AMOLED display, something which as we have seen in the past is far more engaging than the old LCD displays. Crisper colouring and lighter on the battery this be a huge step in the right direction from Apple.

Dropping iOS in favour of Android

Ok, only joking about this one but we ran out at nine. We will be keeping an eye out between now and the expected September launch in order to really find out what to expect from the 10 year anniversary of the revolutionary iPhone.

Update:

Leaked firmware update suggest there will indeed be an iPhone X alongside iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models.

The launch event will take place on 12 September in Apple’s Cupertino HQ.

LG G6: The next generation of LG is ready to rumble

0

It’s that time of year again! The rumour mill has well and truly gone into overdrive in the smartphone world. So far we’ve had news around the latest HTC, Sony and Samsung. Google’s Pixel is still massively popular but is also fairly new. Now it’s the turn of LG. Many expect LG to launch their latest smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress. So, with a launch date of late March or early April, what can we expect from the LG G6.

LG at Mobile World Congress (MWC)

LG typically announce their handsets at the beginning of each year. The LG G5 launched at MWC in 2016. Previous LG launches took place just before the Barcelona-based telecoms event. This year LG have done something perfectly evil by scheduling an event for February 26th. The eagle-eyed among you will note that’s the Sunday before this year’s MWC. Better still, it’s the same day Samsung have pencilled in for a big announcement.

The LG G5 arrived on shelves in April, as did its predecessor. Mark down early April in your diary as we expect a similar timeframe for the LG G6. Asian markets may see an earlier mid-March release. Will we see it in Europe before April? We just might you know. As for price, you can expect to fork out €500 for the privilege of having the latest LG smartphone.

Design of the LG G6

LG have ditched the innovative but expensive modular frame of the G5. Replacing it is either a glass or a reflective metal rear. we would assume the metal if we were betting men. Both would go a long way towards making the G6 feel more premium than previous flagship attempts. There are also rumours that we could see a waterproof build too. Exciting rumours indeed.

Onboard tech

The G5 had a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. Whether this will remain on the G6 remains to be seen. Some claim LG may take aim at Samsung’s iris scanner that we missed out on thanks to the exploding Note7.

When it comes to the display this is where things start to get interesting. Rumours of a curved OLED display seem to have flat-lined. This is despite the fact LG already produce OLED displays for the Apple Watch and their own TVs. LG themselves have confirmed the G6 will boast a 5.7 inch 2880 x 1440 Quad HD LCD display. The company has said it will be the first screen to sport an ultra wide 18:9 aspect ratio. This means the LG G6 will be delivering a pixel density of 564ppi. All you really need to know is that will be a super sharp “immersive viewing experience”. The screen is also said to be ideal for multi-tasking and dual-screen functions. It will use LG’s in-Touch technology for more a responsive experience.

The G6 camera

When it comes to the camera the G5 had an epic dual rear camera. Following the same train of thought is the G6. As always, you’ll get standard camera sensor upgrade. You also get a wide-angle sensor like its predecessor. The front facing camera could be an all job.

Will Note7 tech feature on the LG G6It’s expected to house the camera and iris scanner – all in one. This will authenticate the user and unlock the phone. Other possible specs include:

  • Likely to be Qualcomm SD830 chip with at least 4GB of RAM
  • Wireless charging possible
  • 32GB of internal memory. MicroSD supported
  • Either 2800mAh or 3000mAh battery.
  • Headphone jack

LG’s new flagship brings a more premium design, iris scanner and an all new display. Of course, everything, except the display is just rumour. But if you’re into rumours keep an eye on this article. We’ll update this as more reports and rumours appear.

Roaming charges to leave the EU soon

0

Today marks a win for the average mobile phone user. A deal is now in place to cap the wholesale charges operators can charge each other. Roaming charges within the EU could be gone as soon as June this year.

OK, what does that actually mean?

Look at it this way. A Meteor Ireland customer goes on holidays to Spain, and roams on Movistar. Movistar would then charge Meteor Ireland for providing coverage to their customer. These charges were then passed on in the form of roaming charges. Plus a little extra on top. Today’s ruling means that there is a limit to what operators can charge each other for their customers using services while abroad. This is key, as it was a major stumbling block to abolishing roaming charges for good.

How will this affect my bill?

With a doubt, it’ll be in a positive way. Bill shock after travelling in Europe will soon become a thing of the past. Network operators won’t have to pay large sums for their customers to roam. This means charges won’t be passed down to anyone who is roaming. Everyone wins.

What will roaming charges for consumers be?

Unfortunately, nobody knows for sure what the consumer roaming charges will be. Today’s ruling deals with the wholesale charges between operators. This is just a stepping stone to roaming charges leaving us forever. Using a gigabyte of data is now capped at €7.70 from June. This will drop to €2.50 within 5 years. Calls will also drop to 3.2c per minute. While text messages will go to just 1c.

When will this happen?

However, it is expected to pass through the European Parliament in the next few weeks. This could mean that roaming charges are gone by the time summer holidays are here. You’ll be able to share all the beach snaps on Facebook without worrying about your bank balance. Just try not to share any mankini pictures… Jon.

It might not appear so, but the agreement made today is a huge win for consumers. Roaming charges are the bane of the life of any would-be traveller. Roam like your at home is that bit closer to becoming a reality.
