Is social media banned in your workplace?

0
Workplaces are often rather slow to adapt new ways of thinking. The growth of social media led to panic in many companies. The quick fix was either a social media policy or outright social media bans. Sure enough, there’s a few people in the office who could chill with the selfies, but should Irish employers be embracing social media?

56 percent of Irish businesses ban social media in the workplace

A survey of Irish offices, carried out by Ricoh found 56 percent of businesses ban social media. Even with Facebook launching their Workplace app, 47 percent of offices ban “the buke”. 30 percent of offices lock down WhatsApp access, which is total madness in my eyes. Every office employee in the world should have access to WhatsApp Web. Email is an incredibly frustrating way to communicate that modern social platforms help sidestep.
Just why do employers see access to social media as being a terribly negative thing?

The generation gap

There is a distinct generation gap dividing opinions on social media in work. 82 percent of 16 to 24-year-olds believe social help with relationships in the office. Just 23 percent of workers over 55 years of age thinking the same. This difference in opinion is obviously frustrating for both age-groups. The younger feeling held back while the older feel alienated.

The workplace is a slow turning ship

HR departments are suffering through a constant challenge. They need to keep young staff excited about work and upskilling the older staff. Both are just as important as each other here. The former for retention and the latter to avoid alienation. Many offices still limit access to modern day essentials. Have you ever typed something into Google only for the results to be blocked?

Today, you can learn an insane amount of Excel or Photoshop on Google. Yet, many employers block these resources. You’ll end up asking for pricey courses instead. The ultimate false economy.

It’s all about trust

It really does boil down to that one simple word. Trust. Employers worry about your productivity. If they give you access to Facebook, you’ll just go on the doss, right?

There are plenty of modern day companies who operate very differently. Self-determined working ours and unlimited holidays are just some of the modern benefits. Yet some staff can’t Google how to a vlookup, or check a competitors social feed.

If you can’t trust your staff to work remotely or to have social access, why did you hire them?

Your employer hired you because they trusted you to do a job. They just don’t trust you to avoid dropping truth bombs on Twitter. It doesn’t really make sense, does it?

Apparently, your phone bill is grand and so is your internet speed

0

Ok, we admit it. Sometimes we love nothing more than a good nerd out over some data. Every quarter, the Commission for Communications Regulation, or ComReg, releases a massive report. This ComReg report tells us how people are connecting online, at home and with their smartphones. We’ve gone through the report to pull out a few interesting nuggets. It turns out that your broadband is fast enough and your phone bill is cheap enough

More than one phone per person

Believe it or not, Ireland currently has more than one active phone per person. In a population of 4.7 million people, there are 4.9 million phones. The vast majority of these are smartphones with 4.3 million using 3G and 4G networks. Maybe, just maybe the Nokia 3310 will change that.

It’s no real surprise that Vodafone is once again crowned Ireland’s most popular network, holding 37 percent of Irish mobile customers. They might be a little worried as they used to have 38.3 percent of customers. Tesco Mobile and Three were the big winners through the end of 2016. It’ll be interesting to see if Three’s contract change letting customers leave their contracts leads to a drop in market share. The other operators also increased their share. This is largely down to Virgin Media gathering momentum.

Bill pay or prepay?

It’s rather interesting to see bill pay grow again. Bill pay is always growing which really makes no sense. Phones are not improving as much as they used to and prepay is generally great value. You can even check which is better for you using our handy bill pay versus prepay calculator.

There is one factor we haven’t considered too much – the convenience. Bill pay helps you afford high-end smartphones. Also, running out of credit does feel a little bit childish right? Well, running out of credit is a lot cheaper than having a bill – just look for yourself.

[vc_round_chart type=”doughnut” stroke_width=”2″ values=”%5B%7B%22title%22%3A%22Prepay%22%2C%22value%22%3A%2255.9%25%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22sky%22%7D%2C%7B%22title%22%3A%22Billpay%22%2C%22value%22%3A%2244.1%25%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22green%22%7D%5D” title=”Prepay or Billpay?”]

So, your phone bill is grand

According to the ComReg Report, the national average for a bill pay contract is €31 per month. Prepay customers are paying about €14 per month for their service. The average cost of running your smartphone is continuously being reduced. ComReg attribute these reductions to bundling of home broadband with mobile services. Personally, I think SIM only becoming increasingly popular also plays a part.

SIM only is an increasingly popular way middle ground between bill pay and prepay. This is visible in the ComReg Report as the average cost of bill pay continues to decrease. Sure, you pay a bill but the cost is lower because there’s no phone involved.

[vc_progress_bar values=”%5B%7B%22label%22%3A%22Average%20monthly%20prepay%20cost%3A%20%E2%82%AC14%22%2C%22value%22%3A%2233%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22bar_green%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Average%20monthly%20cost%20of%20services%3A%20%E2%82%AC23%22%2C%22value%22%3A%2266%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22orange%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Average%20monthly%20bill%20pay%20cost%3A%20%E2%82%AC31%22%2C%22value%22%3A%22100%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22sky%22%7D%5D” bgcolor=”blue”]

Are we callers or texters?

We’re talking as much on our smartphones has we ever have. Between October and December 2016, the population of Ireland used 3.1 billion minutes. That’s roughly 277 minutes per person or 90 minutes per month. In the grand scheme of things, not a huge figure.

But, calling remains as popular as ever, unlike poor old text messages. WhatsApp, Snapchat, Messenger and the likes are killing text messages. During the same period, the people of Ireland sent 1.4 billion text messages. A substantial amount yes, but a 15 percent decline on the same period a year earlier.

Irish people love using mobile data

Between October and December 2013, Irish people used just over 10,000 terabytes of data. Towards the end of last year, we used over 50,000 terabytes. To most, that number means nothing. Here’s some perspective. It’s about the same amount of data it would take to watch 50 million episodes of stranger things.

On the move, Irish smartphone users are now each gobbling up 3.4GB of data per month. Which is less than was a lot of Irish data plans now offer. That does make sense. When was the last time you heard someone say they are running out of data?

cat downloading stuff

Oh, and your home broadband is plenty fast

Sometimes, you can’t help but doubt the stats when you see them. We’re under no illusions that many parts of rural Ireland are miles behind urbanised areas in terms of connectivity. According to the ComReg Quarterly Report, the average broadband speed in Ireland is now 30Mbps. That’s a 56% increase over the same period last year.

We can’t help but feel that’s going to be tough reading for a few people.

So, how does that make you feel? Are you on the right side of the averages? Let us know in the comments below. Also, it’s fairly heavy reading, but you can grab the whole ComReg Report in full and tear it apart if you like.

The Irishman: A Netflix and Scorsese story

0
Think about the ultimate gangster movie and what the perfect cast would look like. Well, it looks like it might be about to happen. Martin Scorsese is set to direct The Irishman. This is a Netflix funded movie assembling the dream team. Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel. Those names feature in the all-star flick based on the Charles Brandt book – “I Heard You Paint Houses.”

Holy donkey sh**balls!

Yes, we’re excited. Some of us in Goos3D Tower are starting to think that Netflix is eyeballing an Oscar in the next couple of years. It should be easy when you’re combining talent from iconic crime films such as The Godfather, Casino, Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction. Funding a movie based on an Irish gangster story with this kind of cast just screams “pick me, pick me.”

Make him an offer he can’t refuse

Unfortunately, there have been a few snags. It seems like the big ole wad of cash Netflix has was just too hard to turn down for Mexican producer Gaston Pavlovich. The rumoured budget for The Irishman is a whopping $125 million. There’s so much money involved it even made him forget that he signed a distribution deal with STX Entertainment. They paid $50 million at Cannes last year for the non-US distribution rights.

So obviously since the guys in Netflix have got involved one would assume the original contractor would be a tad miffed? You’d be right. Horses heads could end up in beds yet.

The Irishman

Anyway back to the actual movie. Once everything gets ironed out, here’s what you’ll need to know. The screen writer is Schindler’s List’s Steve Zaillian. The movie depicts the death of ex-Crime boss Jimmy Hoffa, played by Al Pacino. Frank Sheeran AKA The Irishman AKA De Niro tell the story from his deathbed. So expect a pile of flashbacks and the serious use of tech to make De Niro looks thirty years younger.

Touted to for a 2018 we’re already counting down the days for this one. Looks like Netflix finally could have itself and Oscar contender.

FitMenCook: Healthy recipes in a tidy app

I recently downloaded the FitMenCook healthy recipes app and have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Although I am not that much of a cook, I have to say this app has some serious upsides. It even managed to get even me preparing some pretty decent grub. If I do say so myself.

What exactly is FitMenCook?

FitMenCook is a recently released collaboration between FitMenCook and Nibble Apps. It has finally made the jump to the Google Play Store so all of us Android users can experience the benefits of healthy eating too. Social influencer Kevin Curry aims to help us make “struggle free, healthy and practical recipes that are easy on the wallet”. Essentially, the aim is to help people to eat more healthy foods without them tasting like cardboard. In addition, with 294 recipes currently available, Curry aims to have something for everyone.

Struggle free, healthy and practical recipes that are easy on the wallet

The motivation behind this app is a story in itself. Curry who had long struggled with his weight had seen a photo of himself posted on Facebook and decided to make a change. After paying what he called an exorbitant amount of money for a four-week online diet plan. He went to the gym and all in all pursued a healthier lifestyle. The problem was that after a while he began to get tired of bland chicken and rice. He felt the temptation of the foods that had gotten him overweight in the first place.

That’s when he decided to study up on nutrition and do something for himself. He started to create healthy recipes on his Tumblr blog and from there it grew into a thriving online community dedicated to changing the way people look at healthy eating.

The app itself is an extension of all of this. Allowing users to eat the food they like, all the while experiencing the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

What’s brilliant?

  • Content wise you’ll be spoiled for choice. With so many recipes there are options for everyone. The pictures of food alone are enough to make your hungry.
  • The video instructions are easy to follow, making the app accessible to any level of cooking skill.
  • The connectivity with other apps like Google Fit makes tracking your progress that much easier.
  • The app organises your shopping list by aisle.
  • It allows you to measure out recipes depending on how many meals you want to cook.
  • You can search for recipes based on what food you already have in your fridge.

What could be better?

  • Connectivity with widely used apps and wearables like Fitbit would be great. Where currently you have to log the information yourself.
  • The in-app purchase to eliminate adds is vital as the free version can become quite tedious without it.

Overall

In conclusion, this is definitely worth a download. The FitMenCook app really delivers on everything it says. Curry and his team have put together an app that is really useful and helps to take the tediousness out of living a healthy lifestyle.

So with the nutrition side of things locked down, you’ll just need to get moving with these apps.

Why you need to watch RuPaul’s Drag Race

0
Have you ever watched an episode of America’s Next Top Model or Project Runway and thought ‘You know what this needs? More glitter!’. Yes? Then you’re in luck. This month the global phenomenon that is RuPaul’s Drag Race comes sashaying back onto our screens. If you have no idea what RuPaul’s Drag Race is then let me explain.

What is RuPaul’s Drag Race?

RuPaul's Drag Race
Hosted by legendary US drag queen RuPaul, the show follows thirteen hopeful drag queens.
They are competing to win the coveted title of ‘America’s Next Drag Superstar.’ Each week, the queens face a series of challenges. These challenges range from fashion design to acting and everything in between. Finally, they face RuPaul’s judging panel where one is eliminated. I know, it sounds like the standard TV talent show setup, but trust me. This show is unlike any reality show that you’ve seen before.

More than just bad lip-syncing

When you think of drag queens, what usually comes to mind is lip syncing and bad celebrity impersonations. While the show is not short of all that, it has so much more to offer. Each week welcomes a newly themed design challenge. These challenges allow the queens to test their skills and exhibit their own unique style of drag. Past themes included ‘Hello Kitty’, ‘Animal Kingdom’ and ‘The RuPocalypse’. It’s safe to say that there have been some unforgettable costumes since the show first aired in 2009.

The level of creativity is absolutely through the roof. In terms of makeup and costume design and each season seems to get better than the last. As well as the visual aspects, it’s the personalities of the queens that really bring the show to life. Put thirteen drag queens in a room together and watch the entertainment unfold. You get reluctant teamwork, quick-witted insults and whole load of hilarious challenges.

Drastic times calls for dragtastic measures

RuPaul’s Drag Race is a show that you’ll need to see to believe. As well as being fantastically entertaining, it also gives an interesting insight into the LGBT community and the world of drag. All the while, it’s promoting a positive message of creativity and self-love. Season 9 is set to debut on VH1 in the US on Friday 24 March. There has been no word yet on when the show will air in the UK and Ireland.
Trailers have been released and it looks like we’re in for another explosive season with more glamour than ever. You can also expect celebrities like Graham Norton and Lady Gaga to join the panel as guest judges. If you’re not a fan of reality TV then you may think this show isn’t for you but give it a chance and you will not be disappointed.

Catch up on seasons 1 to 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race on Netflix now.

With sites like Google and Facebook gathering data on their users, hacking stories are common in the news. While it’s easy to check if anyone hacked your data, concerns remain about how uses of personal data. It’s crazy to think that people have access to your online activity at any time right? Wrong.

So how do you mask your online behaviour from those who you would rather didn’t see it? Tin foil hats and burning down Facebook’s HQ? Possibly. That’s one way to go, but for those of us who prefer to just stay at home here are some great privacy products and services.

Kong: Skull Island review

King Kong is arguably one of the most recongisable icons in film history. Kong: Skull Island is probably one of the most ambitious remakes to date. We went along to the premiere to see if it’s a chest pounding success.

Kong packs a punch

The first thing that hits you about Kong: Skull Island is that it’s an incredibly loud movie. From the very start the volume knob is stuck at 11. The movie sends one message out all too loud and clear – there will be no subtlety here. And there isn’t. In a massive departure from the 2005 outing, we get to see Kong right from the start. There’s no fannying around New York for 45 minutes. There’s no gathering interesting characters or building tension before even setting foot on a boat. What we get instead is a brief introduction to a fairly large number of cast members. You could also consider this an opportunity to try to guess who’s going to die and how.

During this period we meet Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Jon Goodman and Samuel L. Jackson. You can pretty much guess they’ll be there or there abouts by the end credits. We also meet about 20 other supporting characters (who probably won’t). To be fair, none of this really matters.

The Kong and the short of it

What follows is great fun. Big, entertaining, silly fun that just looks great. John C. Reilly introduces a much needed comedic tone at just the right time. But the real stars of the show are the monsters. Kong is hugely impressive, although we do seem to spend a lot of time looking at his butt for some reason. Other monsters feel a little bit underused but keeping this movie under two hours does feel like a win. While this film doesn’t rely on jump scares there are plenty of surprises along the way. Not a surprise is that Samuel L. Jackson steals the show. His screen presence, along with that of Goodman, threaten to overpower that of the monsters at times. It also leaves Hiddleston looking somewhat like a pale imitation of an action hero.

Is Kong: Skull Island any good?

As for the story, explorers and soldiers go to a previously undiscovered island. They blow stuff up, awaken the beasts, mostly die and the leave us asking ourselves who the real monsters are. The second movie in the Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures Monsterverse, Kong is a solid and enjoyable instalment. It’s at least two years before the third instalment is due. That’ll be Godzilla: King of the Monsters due in March 2019 at this stage. Kong: Skull Island does plenty to whet the appetite for more.

Logan Review: The blueprint for superhero movies

A superhero movie centred around the most iconic of X-Men. This is hardly somewhere that you’d expect to find a masterclass of vulnerability. These days anyone who can predict what they’re going to get from a superhero movie is lying. Like, who would have predictable that Lego Batman would have been a more coherent story than Suicide Squad? But when it comes to Logan I think most of the audience could tell what kind of tone this movie would have.
It was clear from the title. Simply “Logan”, not Wolverine. Not the super invulnerable unstopping force, not the one man army that could take on armies and demi-gods without a scratch on him. The movie establishes early on that, “Wolverine” is long gone and in his place? A very human, somewhat feeble shell of a former hero.

The setting of Logan

We’re a few decades in the future and things are looking pretty bad for the human race. After an apocalyptic event mutants are outlawed. A sinister authority rounds them up and essentially enslaves them for hard labour. Logan (Hugh Jackman) is in hiding as a limo driver near the Mexican border. It’s kind of funny the border actually has a wall – insert witty political commentary here).
At the same time he an alcoholic, whose body is failing him. The amount of punishment it’s absorbed over the years finally are catching up to him. When those blade of his are out it hurts like hell. Logan lives in a wrecked water tower with Charles Xavier, (Patrick Stewart). Xavier, like Logan, isn’t what he used to be. He’s feeble, in his 90s and he needs powerful meds to prevent brain seizures. You know, the kind that causes earthquakes. The ever loyal Logan has basically become his carer.

The life of Logan

Naturally, Logan being Logan has several enemies making life all the more difficult. Namely, Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook) and his employer, technocrat Zander Rice (Played by a typical chilling Richard E. Grant). But then Logan runs across Gabriela (Elizabeth Rodriguez). Gabriela tells him about Laura (Dafne Keen) – a child who appears to have very powerful abilities. She’s got the potential to spark the next generation of mutants.
Of course, Logan has to protect Laura across the harsh landscape. He might even meet a similarly grumpy bearded man named Joel. Joel is also on a mission to protect a child named Ellie who also has world-saving powers. It’s the crossover we never knew we wanted)

Logan is the blueprint for modern hero movies

To be blunt, this is the movie, that the likes of Suicide Squad and Batman Vs Superman SHOULD have been. An impossibly dark yet strangely uplifting character study, with thoughtful and impressive writing. In the year 2017, this should be the blueprint for what superhero films should be. It’s the first superhero movie in a long while that seems to treat comic book films like any other serious film. Films that just happen to be starring comic book characters.

You could almost describe Logan as an old western movie. Jackman is the old gun slinging outlaw feeble and broken down. He has one last ride in him carrying the full weight of his eight other big-screen iconic appearances. It’s funny to think that way back in the year 2000 where there were doubts about if he could fit the role. Seventeen years later it’s utterly impossible to see anyone else in the role.

Then there’s Steward’s Swan song as Charles Xavier. Equally as potent as it is heartbreaking and while the supporting cast knocks it out of the park. It’s the Jackman and Steward show.

It was as pulse racing it was touching. It was absolutely heart-wrenching, and at times it was even funny. As superhero movies go, it was practically flawless and it will take some effort from Marvel and DC to top it as the best Super Hero movie of the current era.

Alien Covenant: Return of the bitch

The bitch is back!

Ellen Ripley is not.

But not to worry. A whole new cast of characters is running away screaming bloody murder from our favourite HR Giger nightmare creation. Quite frankly, I’m fierce excited.

A missing star

A few days on from the death of Bill Paxton, a new trailer for Alien: Covenant has dropped. The cast is made up of James Franco, Danny McBride (a minor worry for me), Michael Fassbender and Cathrine Waterston. They are set to, as the trailer suggests, find paradise through hell. A fitting epitaph for a crew in what is currently promising to be a Ridley Scott horror and gore fest.

What to expect from Alien Covenant

Alien Covenant seems to be something to get excited for. The trailer shows a beautiful, Eden of a world. Mountains spring strong throughout the landscape as our team of hero’s, hopefully, lead by Waterson (keeping with The Alien series of strong female leads) stumbles upon a lush garden sown with wheat and barley. Boots crunch through mud, as one unwitting leader of the crew, crushes a small object releasing spores. Hopefully, this foreshadows some of the terror that we can expect later on in the film.

Prometheus

The film explaining humanity discovering signs of the xenomorphs has had its continuity brought into question by this new trailer. In the new trailer, as mentioned above, the world we are on is lush. The world of Prometheus is arid and dry, much like the planet from the original Alien film. Could Scott be bringing us further back? It seems highly unlikely, so could it be further into the future? Well, all these questions remain and will until the release on 18 May.

What I’m really excited about

To be honest, what I’m really, madly, insanely, Hannibal Lectorly, excited by is one of the final frames of the trailer. Much like the final frames of Rogue One, we saw an iconic bad guy, doing what they do best. In this case? A pouncing Xenomorph.

Am I excited? You’re goddamn right. Catch the trailer below.

5 fashionable wearables for ladies to try out

0

Wearables. Everyone is trying them, or at least talking about them. The biggest year for the market was 2016, with brands producing techy-fashionable wearables. The tech community teamed up with the fashion industry to create more stylish wearable tech. Fashionable wearables are tech accessories that can be worn as bracelets or watches, with a beautiful design.

These wearables, equipped with sensors and Bluetooth, let you connect to your smartphone to help you achieve your goals. From staying active, getting organised, tracking your sleep to paying your groceries.

I’ve summed up the top five trackers that can appeal both to tech snobs and fashion lovers.

Jawbone UP4

Jawbone was fashion’s first popular wearable device. It even got affirmations from supermodels such as Karlie Kloss. The Jawbone UP4 took its style to simplicity and style of the UP3. The UP4 does all the typical things. You can connect to your smartphone and track your activities, calories, heartbeat and sleep. You can even use the UP4 for contactless payments.

Misfit Shine 2

fashionable wearables for ladies

The Misfit Shine 2 is quite unique as you can wear it with a Swarovski pendant as a necklace. This chic wearable is monitoring your fitness and sleep with one-touch operation. It’s basically one big button. What I love about this wearable is that is non-charging, replaceable batteries last up to six months. Better still, it’s quite posh looking when you wear it as a necklace.

Ringly

Ringly is perhaps one of the most sophisticated tech rings on the market. The smart rings track your steps, distance covered and calories burned. You choose what notifications you want to receive from your apps. The ring then vibrates and lights up in matching colours. The rings are made of 18k gold and semi-precious stones. To survive your life, they’re resistant to water and 24-48 hours battery life.

Bellabeat

The Bellabeat is another fashionable health tracker. The big difference is the fact it’s really designed for women. Besides giving you information about all your daily activities, steps taken and calories burned the Leaf tracks also menstruation and ovulation.
