A New Style Part 2 : Dyson Supersonic hairbrush

0

In the not so distant past, we brought you news about the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer. Despite the price of the hairdryer, it has been a resounding success worldwide. Proving beauty really doesn’t come cheap. But yet it seems the suckers at Dyson aren’t done yet. News has recently broken that the company are now working on a “high-velocity” hairbrush. Let the morning battle with wet hair begin.

The patent is in

According to latest news claims, Dyson has lodged patents with the U.K’s Intellectual Property Office. The patent outlines a “mains-powered, baton-shaped device, featuring a fan heater to fire hot or cold air into the hair.” AKA a goddamn supersonic hairbrush to match up with the super sleek hair dryer.

Handy features

The brush is thought to be designed to drain away excess fluid along two tubular walls. If you’ve seen those kinds of round curling brush yokes it’s something like that. This will increase drying speed and align the hair. Meanwhile, the handle will contain a fan which will draw the fluid in and away from the brush and users hands.

Simply put, you may not always need a hairdryer in your travel bag as the brush has got your back. Oh, and obviously, unlike a hairdryer where you still need a hairbrush, this is an all in one solution. You can use that spare hand to follow us on Facebook or Twitter – just saying.

How much will the Dyson Supersonic hairbrush cost?

It should also be a bit cheaper. A welcome alternative for those who couldn’t quite reach deep enough into their pockets for the €400 hairdryer. Knowing them, Dyson Supersonic hairbrush will hardly be cheap, especially considering it’s a hairbrush. Our best guesstimates place it roughly at €200.

Is this Dyson’s gameplan?

In the long term, it seems to us that Dyson is really trying to bring the technology they have learnt through years of vacuum making to other markets. Take the fans and the hairdryers as the most obvious jumps. Before long expect more beauty related products to emerge.

We’re quite open about the fact that we have a new category at Dyson called Personal Care

At present, the Supersonic hairdryer is the only product in that category. Sadly, with over 400 patents filed a year, it may be a while before the Dyson Supersonic hairbrush hits the shelves.

Test and Retest: Samsung testing the focus of their new ad

0
When one of your flagship phones launches and then starts exploding, you have some cleaning up to do. Samsung is doing some spring cleaning themselves. Their latest TV ad shows the extensive Samsung testing process. It’s a blatantly obvious attempt to build confidence ahead of the Galaxy S8 launch. Still, it’s strangely enjoyable.

Choice of song

You’ve got to give the people what they want. This would appear to be Samsung’s new mantra, even though I really wanted a Note7. This 1975 song by the O’Jays plays throughout the ad. It’s a funky tune, but an unusual choice. Shouldn’t they always be giving the people what they want?

Will Samsung testing build confidence?

The minute-long ad depicts Samsung’s quality assurance testing process. Engineers subject the Galaxy S7 Edge to extreme situations. When finished, they show the phone still works. To get the ball rolling, two engineers are performing drop tests. Pretty standard stuff as the Galaxy S7 Edge drops from head-height. All that crossed my mind at this point is someone got rich by inventing a drop-test machine. Seriously, all you need is the right idea at the right time.

The South Korean manufacturer then claims their phones are extensively tested. Clearly, this ad is out to silence critics. Moments later, the Galaxy S7 Edge is going through an IP68 water testing. Not happy with simply calling out the test, Samsung emphasises that they retest too. They then move onto the big test considering the faith of the Note7 – temperature.

What temperature are Samsung phones tested at?

When stories of Note7s exploding emerged, some people began extreme testing themselves. An exploding Note7 suddenly became some sort of weird Wonka Golden Ticket. Samsung must be hoping this video goes some way towards stopping this kind of trend. First, we see a poor S7 Edge shivering at minus twenty degrees celsius.
samsung test S7 edge in cold
Next, the engineers flip extremes, pumping the temperature up to sixty degrees celsius.

The mandatory dig at Apple

Then, with a sneaky low blow, Samsung bring up bend gate. Remember bend gate? That was Apple’s crisis where people sat on their phones and the frame. I would have hoped Samsung were above bringing that backup. They’ve effectively just said, “ah but sure look, no one is perfect”.

It’s genuinely tough to see a smartphone go through a bend test. Seriously, just look at it.

samsung testing bendgateQuality is the priority

Samsung does some more tests and finishes up by showing the S7 Edge battery in all its glory. It’s really impressive that the whole way through, Samsung are testing their phone at 12.45PM too. Obviously a very efficient process. Of course, all phone companies generally have a time they like to show on their phones. Apple have 9.41AM as their keynotes normally started at 9.00AM. Product unveils usually have 40 minutes in. Isn’t that interesting. Sorry, I digress.

Samsung signs the ad off to the sound of the O’Jays and one final claim:
Innovation is our legacy. Quality is our priority.
As I said, Samsung got off pretty lightly with the whole Note7 debacle. This ad might be slight overkill, but it’s a decent effort to rebuilt consumer trust. It’ll be interesting to see how the Galaxy S8 sells when it launches. Remember, the S7 and S7 Edge were incredibly successful and the Note7 was a gorgeous phone. Perhaps a little on the explody side.

Moonlite: Bed time for kids just got better

0

Somethings stay with us forever. Even now, every night before bed I personally wind down with a few pages of a book. This starts from an early age and it is something parents and children everywhere love to do before bedtime. That is why we love this clever little gadget called Moonlite.

our greatest resource is the minds of our children

What is Moonlite?

Moonlite is simple yet it brings something new and interactive to a moment that is vitally important to a child’s development. Maybe that’s the inner Disney kid in me but as the great man himself once said “our greatest resource is the minds of our children”. With this is mind the wonderful world of Kickstarter has given us this really cool gadget.

How does it work?

The Moonlite basically makes bedtime stories come to life. The gadget comes complete with high-quality story images, built-in sound effects and simple but engaging stories. Moonlite aims to make the bedtime reading experience as magical and interactive as possible. With one in three parents reading their kids a bedtime story at night the Moonlite will help not just kids but parents look forward to bed time.

The Moonlite at its source is a teeny projector that attaches to your phone and uses the flash to project an image from the story reel onto a wall or ceiling while matching the images to words on your phone screen. The setup is so easy. First, you chose the story reel you want to share. Attach the Moonlite to your phone. The simple device clips on over your phone’s torch. Next, you open the accompanying app. Finally, the fun part. Read the interactive story with projections and sound effects.

Better again the fitting glows in the dark and when you turn the reel the story on your screen will change too. Handy that.

I wish there was more to say than that, but hey somethings in technology are just meant to be simple. Now could I have one for my Kindle, please. Big kids want this too.

Rabbit: Let’s watch TV alone together

Are you in a long-distance relationship? Miss watching the soaps with your Mammy back home in Ballygobackwards? Is your best buddy off living the American dream? Or are you just lazy on an idle Tuesday evening but hate watching the latest episode of New Girl on your own? Good news, Rabbit has got your back.

What is Rabbit?

Say hello to the questionably named screen-sharing site that’s about more than just video chatting. Use the site to connect with your friends and watch your favourite shows and movies without being in the same room – or the same country for that matter.

How does it work?

Simple. One person acts as host to a “room” and your friends can join your room to join the screen share. From there, you can alternate who takes control of the screen with a virtual remote.

Season 3 GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

What you do on Rabbit is up to you; shop together, work on projects, sing karaoke – the list goes on, but undoubtedly one of the handiest uses it has is mutual movie/show watching. Once you start a video, it’s synced on all devices and you can chat together about what’s going on in a handy sidebar. Perfect for those nights when you simply have to know the latest goings-on in Westeros but Boo won’t let you watch it without them. When you’ve finished watching you can also make use of the handy voice and video features to indulge in your post-Godfather analysis.

How good is it?

In terms of usability, from personal use, I can safely say that Rabbit holds up. As long as you have a stable internet connection you shouldn’t have any problems with syncing. Still, like any tech, it does have its off days. The sole drawback is probably that currently, Netflix is blocked which is likely to be annoying for some users. The developers say they are working on that issue so keep an eye out for updates.

So, what are you waiting for? Happy Rabbitting!

Oh dear, that sounds a bit off, doesn’t it?

Mobile World Congress 2017: What to expect from MWC 2017

0

2016 was an interesting year for smartphones. Samsung said “feck it” and launched an unusually explosive Note7. Apple said “feck it” and removed the headphone jack. While team Goos3D said “feck it” and gave up their smartphones altogether. What’s in store for the year ahead? Still a little hard to tell, but MWC 2017 will certainly give us an idea.

What is Mobile World Congress?

Hands up. We’ve been covering MWC for a few years now, but we’ve never properly explained what it’s about. MWC is one of the biggest events on the tech calendar. Every year in Barcelona, the biggest names of the mobile world come together. Everyone except Apple that is of course but sure look.

This year’s event takes place between 27 February and 2 March.

What to expect from MWC 2017

2017 does promise to be an exciting year for the mobile world. Well, every year actually does when you think about it. Still, here’s what getting us really excited about MWC 2017.

Samsung’s “big” announcement

Ok. Samsung announces their new flagship every year ar MWC. I get that they pushed the launch of the Galaxy S8 for “safety reasons”, but is everything as it seems? An invite sent to the press suggests there will be a big launch in Barcelona.

Unfortunately, the invite is missing the Unpacked branding that accompanies flagship launches.

Expect Samsung to fill the smartphone void with a shiny new tablet – the Tab S3.

I just can’t imagine Samsung will let the event pass by without some sort of surprise for the mobile world. Rumours are rife that the Note7 will make some sort of return with a new non-exploding battery. Will it be at MWC? Time will tell.

Nokia 3310

It’s funny how things work out sometimes. Just a few months ago I was part of the Goos3D team rocking old school Nokias for charity. Now we’re counting down the days to Nokia relaunching the 3310. No joking. Nokia will bring back the Nokia 3310 at MWC 2017.

The big question is how true to the original will Nokia stay? Retro fans will want the Nokia 3310 to come with classic versions of Snake and a battery that lasts two weeks. Rumours of a colour screen would dash the hopes of thousands. This is the surprise package of MWC 2017 with the world looking on.

Nokia will also launch some sort of smartphone too, but for once that’s not the priority.

Huawei

The football fans amongst you will understand my comparison between Huawei and Liverpool. I think every year is going to be ‘their year’. Huawei has been churning out extremely solid phones every year. Unfortunately, Chinese phones have a reputation of being knock-offs. That hasn’t been the case for a long time. Huawei is one of many Chinese companies going unnoticed for making great phones.

At MWC 2017, Huawei will announce the P10. They’ve kept everything extremely quite so far.

All we can really tell is that the dual-lens camera we saw on the P9 is likely to continue. It’s also looking like Huawei will launch the P10 with various colours. They have daily teasers on their YouTube channel, the most telling of which relates to colour.

It’s not just smartphones that has me excited about Huawei though. My beloved Huawei Watch would finally appear to be going out of date. Huawei will likely launch the Huawei Watch 2. They kind of have to really. Android Wear 2.0 provides new functionality to take advantage of.

We’ll be tuning in to see the latest coming out of Huawei’s stable for sure.

Oppo

Oppo will be at MWC 2017You’ve probably not heard of Oppo. Again, we’re really missing out by not paying attention to the Chinese market. Oppo are rising quick through the ranks over there and for good reason. Their flagship phone genuinely challenges the best phones on the market today.

As for MWC 2017, Oppo would appear to be prepping to launch new camera technology. Dubbed the 5x project, it appears this will be all about quality. Still, little known for know, but certainly one to watch.

LG

With Samsung essentially sitting this one out, MWC 2017 is a great opportunity for LG to wow. Strangely, they’ve unveiled huge elements of their new flagship – the LG G6.

lg-g6-r1The usual specs are all there. You get a 5.7-inch display, a whopping 6GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera. LG are another adopting USB-C but bucking another trend. The LG G6 will apparently have a removable battery. Seriously? Nokia 3310’s and removable batteries at MWC. What the bloody hell next?

Well, don’t worry. LG are remaining somewhat conventional. Their build up ads this week suggest you’ll get water and dust proofing.

BlackBerry’s Android phone

Nobody is more shocked than I am that BlackBerry is making this list. The BlackBerry Mercury is a fascinating concept. Running Android, the phone is a touchscreen-button hybrid. We don’t know much else about the Mercury except it’s rocking USB-C.

That’s nowhere near everything you can hope to expect from MWC 2017. The likes of Sony will also be on show with VR set to be a big talking point again. We’ll be keeping a close eye on everything too, so give us a Like on Facebook to be sure you don’t miss out.

AirDates love at first flight

0

AirDates is the world’s first ever in-flight dating app. So for you lonely souls who travel a lot for work, this might pass some time in the airport.

No, it’s not just a mile high club app

Now they aren’t exactly promoting an open invitation to the mile high club, the spoil sports. Instead, this dating app encourages users to upload their travel itinerary in the hope of finding love at first flight. Full of puns today so I am.

Unlike Tinder, the dating app hopes to bring people together quickly and easily. The app, which has a limited range, only wants to get people talking in person as soon as possible.fresh prince reaction

Yeah, talking. Mad idea. Like I was saying if “getting jiggy with it” in a plane cubicle isn’t your thing, you can just chat to other people on the same flight. Each user’s phone acts mast and the more masts, the greater distance of communication that is available. This allows the users to get around the lack of onboard WiFi.

Sounds great no?

Fair enough. Some may shit themselves as the thought of giving out their travel itinerary in the search of love. But our new mate Michael, the app developer, has assured us that a plane is one of the safest places to go on a date. The app also lets users block freaks and notify others users of weirdos.

Airports are always full of nice people and happenings. The perfect place for dating, while waiting to get on board.

In true French gentleman-like style, Michael is looking into the potential of allowing only female users start conversations. No more dealing with “hey, how are u” messages. Am I right ladies? I’m going to need a new chat up line.

AirDates features

According to its description on Apple’s App Store, AirDates will get users to log in through Facebook and establish what kind of people, and when, they want to meet. Users can check in at airports and browse the surrounding area to check for friends and potential dates, and then invite people to chat.

airdates appAirDates is far from the mile high club app that it seems on the surface. Romance in the terminal can quickly fall to pieces “once you realise that you are sitting on the other side of the aircraft,” the app’s description reads. “With AirDates  the magic stays with you on board, allowing you to continue your chat.” It’s a pretty cool piece of tech to keep that going regardless of internet connection. Irrelevant of the flight duration, you can get to know each other, start to share ideas and maybe even share more than a cab after arrivals.

Find through love with AirDates as long as your soulmate is on iOS.

Five underrated comedy shows that may have flown under your radar

If you’re anything like me you are always on the hunt for your next binge. It feels like regular scheduled TV as well as various streaming services just can’t keep up with your voracious appetite. Every now and then, there’s a chance you’ll miss some of the comedy shows out there. I hope this little list will add at least one thing to your queue because there’s no feeling like finding that next binge.

Casual

casual tv showCasual is what you get when you mix intergenerational family dramedy with sex and first world problems. The show follows the lives of Valerie (Michaela Watkins) and her teenage daughter Laura (Tara Lynne Barr) who, following the split from Valerie’s husband move in with Alex (Tommy Dewey), Valerie’s single younger brother.

Alex is the affluent but cynical creator of a popular dating site Snooger.com. He uses the site to help his psychotherapist sister get back on the horse. Meanwhile, sexually precocious Laura balances her disrupted home and school life as best she can – which is to say, badly.

Give it a go: if you like comedy shows like Transparent, Girls, Bojack Horseman, Fleabag and Catastrophe.

Give it a miss: If you are looking for a kid-friendly laugh track sitcom.

High Maintenance

High maintenanceIn the last few years, we’ve seen more and more anthology series popping up where each episode presents a self-contained story. Think Black Mirror and Easy. Each episode operates like a short film. We’ve even had self-contained seasons with the likes of American Horror Story and Fargo.

HBO’s High Maintenance follows a similar format. Each episode offers viewers a vignette into the lives of the weird and wonderful pot-smoking denizens of NYC. There’s only one constant character throughout the series. He’s a biking pot-dealer/deliverer known only as ‘the guy’ who serves to connect all these seemingly incompatible lives through their shared taste for illegal drugs.

Each episode gives us a snapshot into maybe two or three lives and though brief, offer surprisingly rich stories. Some characters are lovable, others utterly detestable but all are compelling.

Give it a go: If you love Humans of New York, short films, great writing, something that you can dip in and out of or drama that’s a little bit different.

Give it a miss: You prefer time to get to know your characters, like a lot of action or concrete plot lines.

Pro-Tip: High Maintenance began life as a web series so if you are looking for more be sure to check it out!

Man Seeking Woman

man seeking womanMan Seeking Woman is like nothing you’ve ever see on television before. I’m at a bit of a loss as to how to describe it, but I’ll give it a go. It’s a surrealist sitcom of epic proportions. Man Seeking Woman follows the life of loser 20-something Josh Greenberg (Jay Baruchel) following a break-up with his long-term girlfriend. At first, things seem normal enough. Josh’s best buddy tries to cheer him up and urges him to get back into the dating scene.

Then things start to get weird. A literal black cloud follows Josh around town. When a well-meaning sister sets Josh up with her Swedish friend “with a beautiful personality” she turns out to be a literal 3-foot-tall troll. And when Josh is invited to a party he finds his ex is dating a very literal and extremely ancient Adolf Hitler.

Man Seeking Woman takes pains to playfully literalise and bring to life the triumphs and pitfalls of modern dating. When Josh finally succeeds in getting a girl’s phone number he receives a call from Obama congratulating him. When he agonises over how to follow up with a flirty text he’s joined in an underground war bunker by a team of experts to craft the perfect message. It’s a weird show for sure, but so is dating in the 21st century.

Give it a go: If you liked The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Eric Andre Show, Community.

Give it a miss: If you find yourself saying sci-fi is too unrealistic.

Please Like Me

favourite comedy shows include please like mePlease Like Me was on my ‘to watch’ list for far too long. I’d heard good things but just hadn’t gotten around to watching it – partly because the title put me off a little bit. I regret it now because I would now probably count it as one of my all time favourite comedy shows if not shows in general. The moment I finished bingeing it last month I wanted to watch it all over again!

The show is a loosely autobiographical dramedy from 20-something Australian comedian Josh Thomas. Josh writes and stars in it with his real-life best friend Thomas Ward. It follows the day-to-day lives of Josh and his friends with a fun, lighthearted touch. The series also offers surprising emotional depth in its treatment of friendship, mental health and LGBT issues.

It’s one of those shows that finishing feels like saying goodbye to a good friend. That’s how emotionally invested you get in this pack of lovable misfits.

Give it a go: If you love insightful character-driven drama, well-rounded LGBT characters that aren’t just one-dimensional caricatures, great comedic writing.

Give it a miss: If you like your shows a little more PG or are uncomfortable with the discussion of more serious topics like depression and suicide.

You’re the Worst

Youre-the-WorstI would argue that You’re the Worst is one of the best comedy shows, if not the best romantic-comedy series currently on TV. The premise is simple enough. Two deeply flawed and selfish narcissists meet and hook up at the wedding of a mutual friend. What starts out as a one-night-stand quickly escalates into something more, much to both of the participants’ surprise.

What initially sounds like a formulaic rom-com is so much more. You’re the Worst proves itself to be an accomplished, rich and layered look at life examining modern relationship dynamics, depression and PTSD among other things. At the end of the day, it’s still rich white people problems but rich white people problems done well. What I really love and find particularly refreshing about this show, is that quite like another favourite show of mine Freaks and Geeks, there are no bit characters.

Though the show’s focus is clearly the couple at the centre of the drama, supporting characters are far from neglected. Each is given proper development so that even if a supporting character is played for comedic effect in an earlier episode, you are almost guaranteed they will get their own time in the limelight in a later episode.

Give it a go: If you liked comedy shows like Love, Peep Show or Weeds. Or, if you like your comedies with a little more bite and don’t mind love-to-hate characters.

Give it a miss: If you’re trying to be less cynical and you hate listening to millennials whine.

Abstract: The Art of Design a Netflix docuseries for design lovers to binge on

0

Design a is part of our lives and cultures these days. The new original Netflix docuseries Abstract: The Art of Design is about the creative minds that shape our world. The series offers a glimpse on how a product catches life – from an idea to a tangible creation.

abstract series image

What is Abstract?

Abstract is an eight-part documentary series, that tackles the art and science behind the work of some popular designers. The series is focusing on the lives of the creators, following the drama behind the struggle of bringing an idea to life.

Each episode is focusing on one designer in particular. The series looks at:

  • Illustrator – Christoph Niemann
  • Graphic Designer – Paula Scher
  • Photographer – Platon
  • Shoe Designer – Tinker Hatfield
  • Architect – Bjarke Ingels
  • Interior Designer – Ilse Crawford
  • Car Designer – Ralph Gilles
  • Stage Designer – Es Devlin

The show is about going inside the minds of some of the greatest designers

“The show is about going inside the minds of some of the greatest designers in the world and unpacking their creative process in a truthful and honest way, to show people how the world around them is shaped,” states Dave O’Connor, one of the creators.

Executive producer and Academy Award–winning documentarian Morgan Neville, alongside former Wired editor in chief Scott Dadich and Radical Media VP Dave O’Connor are the creators of the show.

Any works I’d recognise from the show?

The series will really surprise you in terms of the number of creators you’re familiar with. Platon is perhaps best known for his portrait shots. He rose to fame in 2007 when Time magazine featured his shot of Vladimir Putin on their cover.

Platon shoots Putin for Time

Shoe designer Tinker Hatfield is well known in certain circles. He was the lead designer for Nike’s Air Jordan III through XV, XX, and XX3. Michael Jordan himself appears in Abstract too. Honestly, you’ll probably recognise at least one thing from each designer.

Is it worth the watch?

It absolutely is. Whether you binge through Abstract in one sitting or drip-watch it over time. This is one series that Dadich promises is not boring at all.

Clockwise is a smarter alarm clock app

0

Look, waking up is horrendous whatever way you look at it. There’s a new alarm clock app called Clockwise that helps get more done as you’re trying to open your eyes.

What makes Clockwise a great alarm clock app?

Clockwise sets itself apart from other alarm clock apps by being just a little bit smarter. So first of all, it will wake you up at a set time. You can also choose what days you would like to wake up at that set time. Nothing too ground-breaking there. Once app believes you’re awake, the real trick appears.

You can choose bits of information you’d like to have once you’re awake. There are 11 modules you can choose from. In the pro version of the app, you can pick them all. The free version of the app limits you to three.

What are the best modules in Clockwise?

The best modules will vary quite a bit depending on each individual user. For example, I drive to work every morning. I find it really handy to have the app estimate how long my commute will take. That way I know if I have time to make a coffee or not.

Another great module reads tweets by a user. There’s a time difference between us and America. That means Trump usually tweets something world changing while I sleep. Now, as soon as I wake up, I can have my morning ruined by his madness. On the plus side, for a moment it feels like his presidency was just part of a nightmare.

Finally, I use the Reddit option a fair bit. This reads out some of the top posts for certain topics. This gives you the power to pull news from a huge range of topics. The only problem with this is that it reads out stickied posts too so try and avoid those topics.

Any more developments coming?

In a thread online, the app developer seemed to be pretty welcoming to suggestions. One idea is that the time your alarm goes off changes depending on different situations. So if traffic is particularly heavy, the alarm will wake you up a little earlier.

This has possibly taken over as my favourite smart alarm clock. Until now it was the alarm clock that made you scan a barcode to stop it. Was great for forcing me not to snooze. Currently, the Clockwise smart alarm clock app is only available on Android. It’s available for free or premium for just over €1.

eir WiFi Calling: New tech battling poor indoor coverage

0

Cutting costs and improving mobile reception – I love double whammy new tech. eir WiFi calling has just launched and to not beat around the bush too much – sign me up.

The Simpsons GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Improved mobile experience

The mobile world just keeps getting better for users. We’re just off the back of the recent news that EU customers will no longer pay roaming charges. eir have decided to push the boat out further with the imminent arrival of their new system.

eir call this new age tech WiFi Calling, which is a bit of a giveaway. The tech lets eir mobile customers to use their WiFi connection for calls and texts. The main benefit is that customers can do this through their own mobile number. The system is also a huge step towards the next innovation – voice over 4G.

Ok, so far this sound just like using WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger right? There is one massive difference. The person you’re contacting doesn’t need to have anything extra downloaded. You actually make the calls and send the texts through the standard communications systems. Great for calling the parents on the cheap.

eir also highlighted the benefits of WiFi Calling for customers indoors. Some of Ireland’s older houses are like bomb shelters. eir’s new service will give improved signal indoors – once you’re on the WiFi.  Another win for those who lose service when you land onto a mates gaff. Of course, if you’ve fecked off to Oz like Dean, there are massive positives to this too.  These people can now use WiFi to call Irish numbers without the fear of roaming charges. Dean, I’ll be waiting for a call soon chap.

What’s the catch?

Well, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, so eir has tied the new feature to your mobile plan. Calls and texts you use through WiFi Calling are deducted from your monthly allocation. It also looks like you’ll have to be on eir broadband to get this service early. It’s likely to appear on Meteor at a later date.

The benefit of wifi calling is that it doesn’t use a whole lot of bandwidth, so it will work down to relatively low speeds with no issues for voice quality

The best bit of WiFi Calling

Another cool thing about WiFi Calling is if your internet connection is crap. Where signal is poor, a small indicator will flicker on the screen. This alerts users to whether the user’s WiFi service is active or not. Just to make sure the system is full up to scratch, eir will roll out wifi calling on a phased basis. The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will get the first bite of the futuristic cherry. Get’s me thinking I must sort out that upgrade soon.
