New on Netflix Ireland: Ultimate Beastmaster

0

“Reality TV” has finally found its way onto Netflix Ireland. We’ve binged on Ultimate Beastmaster in the interest of science.

What is Ultimate Beastmaster all about?

Ultimate Beastmaster is an obstacle course based show produced by Sylvester Stallone. In each episode, 12 Beastmasters from the US, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Japan and South Korea take on the Beast. The Beast is made up of four levels where each Beastmaster must score points to work their way up the leader board. It’s kind of like Takeshi’s Castle, but not as entertaining. Or maybe Ninja Warrior, but not as exciting.

You don’t seem convinced about the show

The show is actually quite entertaining. The winner from each episode goes forward to the Ultimate Beastmaster final. The problem is that everything gets a little repetitive. Every now and then the first obstacle is swapped out or a chain is replaced with a rope.

Simply put, if you binge on this show in one go, you’ll be bored very quickly. Instead of being ten episodes, it could easily have been two. The challenges just don’t change enough.

But, don’t let me take away from the show. It’s very exciting to watch in bits. You’ll fall in love with the South Koreans too, mainly because of the presenters.

The presenters

As the show pits several nations against each other, each is represented by two presenters. The presenters are a saving grace of the show. Most notable is a surprisingly timid Terry Crews who isn’t really is usual banter self. Plus his repetitive chanting of U-S-A will drive you insane. I’m trying really hard to protect my positive feelings toward Crews. Other presenters include former UFC champion Anderson Silva, but it’s not the well-known names you should focus on. The South-Koreans are amazing.

The South-Koreans are amazing. Their reactions to the South Korean Beastmasters efforts are worth the admission fee on its own.

The verdict

It’s decent. Honestly, don’t try and binge-watch the whole thing. You’ll hate your beloved Terry Crews. You’ll wonder why Sylvester Stallone was allowed make money on this idea. It’s obviously a cash spinner. It’s a grand show to pop in and out of but that’s about it. If you’re looking for something to really sink your teeth into, try White Rabbit Project, Chef’s Table or Abstract.

Irish sites possibly affected by Cloudbleed

0

An online security thing has happened again, and of course it has a cool nickname too. But just what this security bug and what Irish sites are affected by Cloudbleed? We’re here to explain the issue in simple terms. First, you’ll need to know a little something about Cloudflare.

What is Cloudflare?

You’ve probably never heard of Cloudflare, yet over 5.5 million websites use this service. Goos3D is one of these 5.5 million sites too. The service makes websites run much faster for users, but also make them much more secure. Remember when Boards.ie was being pounded by a DDoS attack last year? Their solution was to install Cloudflare. A DDoS attack simulates huge volumes of traffic to a website. Cloudflare steps in like a bouncer telling suspicious traffic to pop away for a coffee. If you’ve ever been in a club with extremely drunk people, you now get why Cloudflare is really important.

What is Cloudbleed?

Cloudbleed is a security bug discovered in the way Cloudflare works. Tavis Ormandy, a Google vulnerability tester, discovered the bug on 17 February. Have you ever been annoyed in on a Friday evening when an email comes in just before 5pm? Imagine how the poor Cloudflare lads felt seeing this tweet.

cloudbleed tweet

The security bug led to some user data being leaked. It’s possible that this has been happening since September 2016 up until last week. Some of the biggest sites involved are Uber, 1Password, FitBit and OKCupid. 1Password, a password management service, was unaffected as

Uber stated that they only have a small amount of traffic passing through Cloudflare. 1Password, a password management service, was unaffected as they don’t depend on Cloudflare’s encryption. OkCupid, which does have a substantial database of Irish users, reported minimal if any exposure.

I use some of those sites. What should I do?

Cloudflare has played down the bug, highlighting how quickly they moved to plug holes.

The companies response time and transparency should be applauded. At the same time. you shouldn’t play down the severity of the breach. Your 1Password account’s master password won’t need to be reset. However, if you use some of the other services affected by Cloudbleed, you should change your password.

What Irish sites are affected by Cloudbleed

There are a huge number of sites that use Cloudflare. As I’ve mentioned, Goos3D is one of them, but our investigations show we’re unaffected by Cloudbleed. Other low-risk sites include JOE.ie, TheLadBible.com and Balls.ie. These sites, like Goos3D don’t require login and are considered low risk.

Boards.ie is one of the best-known sites to utilise Cloudflare since their DDoS attempt last year. In a recent update, Boardsie Mark confirmed they were in touch with Cloudflare and didn’t believe Cloudbleed affected Boards.ie.

RTÉ.ie is also a Cloudflare customer, but as of yet have made no comment on the security bug. We’ve reached out for comment and will update this post when possible.

Update: RTÉ have confirmed that while they are using Cloudflare, they have been unaffected by Cloudbleed.

Should I be worried about Cloudbleed?

First of all, it’s important to note that the media loves a good online security bug. There’s a fair bit of scaremongering that goes on. You should always be somewhat concerned about leaks like this. Honestly, there’s a large chance you’re data has been leaked before now and it’s easy to check.

If in doubt, you can check popular websites to see if they use Cloudflare with this tool. This won’t tell you if Cloudbleed has affected a website. It simply tells you that they are one of the millions of sites using Cloudflare.

When things leaks like this happen, we do recommend you change your passwords. While you’re at it, swap over to passphrases.

WhatsApp status rolls out for Irish users

0

When was the last time you when a few days without WhatsApp? That app has changed everything about how we communicate. I have a fun fact for you. WhatsApp was never meant to be a messaging app.

But WhatsApp doesn’t do anything else?

WhatsApp does have one other feature. You probably only used it when you downloaded the app – WhatsApp Status. Back in 2009, when the app was created, this was actually all it did. It was a super simple way to tell your friends and family what you were at.

whatsapp status

This is the reason for the name WhatsApp – you were saying “what’s up”. There was none of this “but they were online” or “they’ve seen my bloody message” nonsense. Anyway, the brains behind the app have wanted to upgrade the WhatsApp status for years. Irish users can now use the new status features, which may look a little familiar.

What’s up with the new WhatsApp Status

The new status lets you share an image or video with your contacts. This status is a snapshot into what’s going on in your life. It’ll remain in place for 24 hours – visible only to those you pick in your security and privacy settings. Once you’ve captured your photo or video, you can add emojis, text or draw freehand. Isn’t this a totally unique way to keep your network up to date with your life?

No actually, it’s really like Snapchat

It’s that obvious, is it? Well, WhatsApp is owned by Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg’s social network behemoth has been targeting Snapchat for a while now. Facebook has added the stories space to the top of the mobile app. An identical feature now appears in Instagram too. Okay, so I’ll admit that they’ve failed miserably in my network to get people on board …

facebook stories not popular

WhatsApp status is another attempt by the powers that be in Facebook to take on Snapchat. Is Snapchat in any danger?

I thought WhatsApp video would be the reason we all finally start video calling each other. That explosion didn’t happen, most likely because everyone knows WhatsApp does one job brilliantly. We’re happy with that. so I’ll risk saying WhatsApp Status won’t take off either.

Check the iOS and Android store for your update.

Podcasts: What podcast should I listen to?

0

Are you a podcast sceptic or new to the podcast scene? I was once like you – unsure if I would genuinely like to listen to a podcast. I wondered if they would be able to fit into my daily routine. Podcasts became a staple for me last summer when all the music I was listening to had lost its edge and I wanted something a bit more varied. Now I regularly find myself asking “what podcast should I listen to next?”

Why should I listen to podcasts?

There are loads of reasons to listen to podcasts:

Podcasts offer diversity

There’s a lot of choice when it comes to podcasts. There are mindfulness, true crime, comedy, news podcasts … I think you get the picture the list goes on and on.

They’re portable

Download one or two or as many as you like onto your computer or phone and off you go. Great for the morning and evening commute, in the gym or on the way to meet friends.

They’re informative

There is always something new to learn from a podcast. As they say, you learn something new every day and with podcasts, you can.

Podcasts are a great alternative to TV

Sometimes there’s nothing on TV or we’ve watched all the series that interest us on Netflix. If you’ve checked out Robyn’s hidden gems, then it’s time to look at podcasts. I often just listen to a podcast when I’m not in the mood to watch anything on TV.

Irish Film Industry: What comes next for Irish filmmakers?

Irish filmmakers are experiencing somewhat of a boom in business right now. Irish writers and directors, producers and editors and every other crew member are in huge demand. I, as a filmmaker, can attest to this.

Look at Lenny Abrahamson. Best known for his stunning take on homelessness in Ireland with Adam and Paul. Abrahamson, has since gone on to become an Oscar nominee for his film Room. Irish Writer Emma Donoghue adapted Room for the big screen. Abrahamson also cleaned up in Europe, though this may be the more traditional stomping ground for our filmmakers.

This is a huge sign of what can be expected from Irish filmmakers in the next few years. Already we knew that our animation sector was running rampant. There have been two Oscar nominations for Book of Kells and Song of the Sea. Now we are seeing the quality of our live action filmmakers catch up. Sing Street being a notable recent addition to the list – Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sing Street result of irish filmmakersThe McDonaghs disbelief

Never mind the McDonaghs, if you remember this time last year John Michael McDonagh was quite uncomplimentary in regards to the size and ability of our industry. Though, you may look back at both brothers filmography and note that they almost exclusively use Irish Film Board money, Irish cast, Irish Crew and Irish locations.

This rankles a tad too much, since, despite continued government cutbacks to the funds available to the IFB, our small and medium sized films are making waves. Thankfully, the film board are pushing for funding to return to pre-recession levels. The number being thrown around is €20 million but nothing concrete has emerged.

How are Irish filmmakers doing?

Signs are boding well for the industry. Several new studios are currently in development. The push for Ardmore to not be sold continues – though I could write an entire article on why that would be a terrible terrible idea. And the continued use of our country for large Hollywood productions and tv series such as Vikings which is shot almost entirely in and around Ashford Co. Wicklow. So, you may ask …

What exactly happens next?

Well, in terms of quality I believe that the Irish industry will continue to improve. As a small nation with a growing population, the number of filmmakers, both prospective and actual, will continue to grow. Assuming the IFB get what they need, there’s no reason why small independent Irish features can not spread the world over.

Hollywood has a stranglehold on big blockbuster filmmaking right now. Ireland will soon, and has previously, loosened Hollywood’s grip. To those of us out there who love cinema, who love TV, get out there and support our filmmakers. It’s already an uphill struggle. Instead of going to see Bridget Jones baby momma or the latest Marvel flick, look up and consume Irish. We want to do it with our food, so why shouldn’t we look locally for our entertainment?

Netflix’s Chef’s Table – a mouthwatering show

0

I cannot think of another TV show with more beautiful visuals than Netflix’s Chef’s Table. Masterminded by Jiro Dreams Of Sushi director David Gelb, Chef’s Table covers artsy silhouettes of the world’s notorious gastronomic artists.

The concept behind Chef’s Table

Since its inception in 2015, Chef’s Table has changed food television. The show has transformed the genre from food porn to food romance as it takes the viewers on an intimate touching journey. Not to mention the quality of the cinematography. The cameras move and spin, grasping every viewpoint of a dish. Every aspect from freshly cut vegetables to plating setup is extremely close-up.

Chef’s Table is offering viewers the opportunity to enter the lives and kitchens of some of the most known culinary talents. The show is story-driven, aiming to show the people behind the plates. Every narrative goes deep into the chef’s early years to discover their influence on the dishes. The way sadness or breakups can create beautiful music, so the battles of a young and a creative chef can revolutionise gastronomy.

It’s a different kind of cooking show

What makes Chef’s Table different from other cooking show is the context. “I like to say that it’s food romance,” Gelb says. “There’s emotional context between the chefs and the food, between the audience and the food. It’s different than showing a bunch of close-up shots of a delicious piece of chicken. We want you to know how much the chef toiled away at that chicken and what it meant to them.”

I like to say that it’s food romance

In its first two seasons — plus a French-language offshoot, Chef’s Table: France — the Netflix series has presented famous and award-winning chefs such as Gaggan Anand, Grant Achatz, Magnus Nilsson and Massimo Bottura. Each of them, Gelb says, is deserving of their own feature film. “We want to give a portrait [of these chefs] and take the audience on a journey of their lives to answer the question about not what they cook, but why they do it.”

Each episode delivers exciting, provocative content at an impressive level of cinematic excellence. Here are my favourite episodes:

My favourite Chef’s Table episodes: Season One

Massimo Bottura with Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy

“Every time I open a cheese like this, I get emotional. In my blood, there’s balsamic vinegar. My muscles are made by Parmigiano.” Meet Massimo Bottura.

Francis Mallmann with El Restaurante Patagonia Sur in Buenos Aires, Argentina

“I use cooking to send this message about a way of living,” says Mallman, the off-the-grid chef from Patagonia. “I’m always cooking in these remote places with wild fires. So my message is get off your office chair or your sofa and go out.”

My favourite Chef’s Table episodes: Season Two

Grant Achatz with Alinea in Chicago, United States

Chef's Table

“I want guests to expect the unexpected. We start with a fantastic product and twist it along the way. It is a kind of a mind game,” Achatz says as he deconstructs a tomato and turns it into a strawberry.

My favourite Chef’s Table episodes: Season Three

Virgilio Martinez with Central in Lima, Peru

“Since I came up with the idea of the altitude menu, we’ve been discovering these new things. And after four years, I realise that we know nothing — we know a little, that’s it. I’m still learning a lot. This is a work in progress. This is just the beginning.”

For foodies, this series is a delight. For everyone else, it is a mesmerising, exploration of how these chefs cook.

The only shortcoming to binge watch an entire season in one day is that you will be hungry. You’ll be left craving to experience at least one in your lifetime a tasting menu from one of these chefs.

The Great Wall Review: 2017’s “other” big wall discussion

The Great Wall is based on one of the biggest man-made structures in human history. It’s appropriate that this film had a lot of expectations around it and after all why wouldn’t it? As it stands, it’s the biggest ever joint venture from an America-China co-production. It’s also the most expensive movie shot in China. Add the fact that it’s the first major project from Zhang Yimou since he directed the 2008 Beijing Olympics and you think “What could go wrong” right?

How The Great Wall sets up

the great wall movieMatt Damon is William, a mercenary from, well possibly anywhere from Madrid to Dublin. His accent is more than a little tough to place. William and his fellow Mercenary, Tovar (Pedro Pascal) are travelling the Chinese wilderness. They are searching for black power with the aim of weaponising it. On their journey, they run into an army deployed on the Great Wall to defend China from monsters. They soon find themselves in an army alongside lance-wielding, bungee-jumping female warriors.

How it plays out

The acting, on the part of many of the main characters, is very stiff, particularly on the Chinese side of things. Perhaps the cast were under pressure to learn English. Jing Tian, Commander Lin Mei, seems like he’s in slow motion for most of the movie.

Many touted the Great Wall as the West meets the East. The casting of Damon, Pascal and Ballard (Willem Dafoe) is the only element representing the West. And Ballard seems to be there purely to explain how Commander Lin learned English.

The Chinese side of the script is riddled with clichés. There are plenty of speeches about working together to help the greater cause. As for Matt Damon, the film does not wholly pivot on him here and rather than it being a case of whitewashing, it’s more grey.

Can the CGI save the day?

The CGI monsters that serve as the antagonists aren’t much better. Despite impressive design, you can spot the Eastern influences with the anime-like design. Every major aspect of their behaviour — such as their main vulnerability and communication methods — comes across as a blatant device that the heroes can use to overcome them.

The Great Wall is in cinemas now.

Tag Heuer Smartwatch: A seriously sexy accessory

0

Before I get going on the Tag Heuer Smartwatch, I feel a bit of back story is needed. I personally am a huge watch fan, always have been always will be. In fact, this is a love that goes back to my childhood and my old grandfather’s jewellery shop in Limerick City. I remember getting my first watch on my Communion day. It was a Nike digital job and I still have it somewhere.

A confession…

Anyway, this is probably why I don’t own a smartwatch. Up to now smartwatches have been a bit gimmicky or made by tech companies with no flair for the style and beauty of a real piece of wrist bling. Until now that is. Tag Heuer are set to release the most exciting smartwatch to date. Recently, Micheal Kors and other fashion brands have begun producing smartwatches. The time has come for the big boys to enter the arena.

The second generation smartwatch is set to be released on 14 March. It will be the first to feature a modular system for switching between digital and mechanical movements. That basically means a standard watch face and the Android digital face. So when your battery dies your still wearing a fine bit of James Bondesque magic rather than a limp piece of gadgetry.

Cravetv GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

When will we get the Tag Heuer smartwatch

Tag Heuer boss Jean-Claude Biver had originally been saying that we would not see the latest model until May. Thankfully this has changed with an announcement imminent at Baselworld. For you and me that’s the annual Swiss trade show attended by all the world’s largest watchmakers.

switch between the digital connected Android Wear 2.0 body and a more traditional automatic movement

Tag Heuer has developed a way for the watch to function as both a smartwatch and a regular timepiece. The smartwatch is to be called the Connected Modular allowing the owner to “switch between the digital connected Android Wear 2.0 body and a more traditional automatic movement.”

For version two, Tag Heuer will use the new Android Wear 2.0 operating system. The watch will also feature NFC for making contactless payments, a more accurate GPS chip, an improved display and longer battery life. The watch will also feature industry-standard lugs to which any strap and clasp can be fitted. It will also come in a male and female size faced so nobody should feel let out.

And it’s totally affordable, right?

The world of fashion and tech seems to be on a collision course and this is something we are excited about. Gone will be the days of substance without style. Jean-Claude has gone as far to say he expects the new model to ship 150,000 this year. “Connected” the original Tag smartwatch retailed at €1,000 a pop, yet it still shipped over 56,000 units.

Plenty of people must have been saving up their pennies. Now if someone could please point me in the direction of the nearest credit union.

If you liked Batman Arkham you’ll love Marvel Games

0

The DC gaming universe has been fairly successful thanks to the likes of the Batman Arkham series created by Rocksteady. Marvel has obviously noticed the one gap in the market they haven’t already covered. Say hello to the thought of Marvel Games.

Marvel Games set to assemble

While they’ve developed their series of games through the LEGO franchise, Marvel is set to get a little darker. Enter Square Enix, the team behind the Final Fantasy series?

Just look at this teaser trailer:

Now correct me if I’m wrong but does that not sound like one Scarlett Johanson or is it just me? By the sounds and looks of things here, the games seem to have the real life Avengers cast on board. Even though it is only early days expect the voices of Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr and co to be involved.

Rumours galore

At the moment this and tweets from both parties are all we have to go on. But, as a betting man, I reckon the deal to bring Spiderman in and the Marvel collaboration with Sony means the PS4 will be the first console to see anything from this agreement.

The plan at this point seems straight forward. First, adapt the immense Marvel universe into games over the next number of years beginning with The Avengers. The trailer suggests this logic is sound, but did you noticed the subtle drop of the wording “reassemble.” One would assume this means the series will begin post-Civil War and Pre Infinity War. These leaves it open for a standalone Spiderman, Black Panther and Guardians of the Galaxy games in line with the Third Phase of the Marvel Project.

The gaming landscape

A few big budget games failing rather badly in the last holiday season. Assasins Creed a prime example. You would have assumed that publishers would start to change their investment strategy. But it seems that the success of Marvel related movies has given Square Enix confidence to invest heavily. I can partially understand the reasoning but games are not movies. The ongoing scourge of big budget game releases failing to make their money back is still an ongoing trend.

Sure look for now it’s all theory and pipedream but to be honest judging by the trailer this could be something big. If they use a similar multicharacter style gameplay to that of GTA V, this could be an absolute win. Go with the massive map as well to be on the safe side. The Marvel universe is a large one and full of interesting functional opportunities in terms of gaming, plus who could complain about seeing more of this.

Organic Apples: Apple Park opens for business

0

Earlier this month we got the awesome news that Ireland would become the first country in the world to ban investment in fossil fuels. One of the main reasons behind this is the massive impact global warming is having on the planet. It’s a real risk to our children and our children’s children. But thankfully, the leaders of the world are starting to take notice. And hopefully, more countries will follow our lead.

What has this got to do with tech I hear you ask? Well, this week, Apple has announced their new headquarters in Cupertino, California will open in April. Apple Park has been under construction for a few years now and it’s finally ready.

Apple Park was the vision of Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs’ vision for Apple stretched far beyond his time with us

Apple CEO, Steve Cook, recently said ‘Steve’s (Jobs’) vision for Apple stretched far beyond his time with us.’ The next stage has been realised.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VCvkYA5dR8

As you can see, it looks like some kind of Alien spaceship landed in the middle of Silicon Valley. It’s an incredible engineering feat and will also be run by 100 percent renewable energy. Apple has installed thousands of solar panels on Apple Park and is getting rid of all fossil fuels in the running of their HQ.

Apple and the environment

In 2015, 93 percent of their energy came from renewable resources. Their facilities in Singapore is run by 32-megawatt with solar panels on over 800 rooftops. In China, they also use renewable energy and their data centres all over the world that helps you send your iMessages and helps Siri answer you is all run on 100 percent renewable energy. They create and protect more sustainable forest then they actually use every year. Soon they hope this goes up to one million acres of forest.

They have also gotten rid of any toxins that could be harmful to the environment, such as Mercury and Arsenic, which previously was used in their screens. They even have a Full Material Disclosure program which lists every single component used in making their products so you can’t call bullshit.

In the past couple of years, Apple has also become very serious about the planet. They’ve looked for ways we can help repair the damage we have caused over the centuries we have been here. But this isn’t the first step Apple have taken in playing a part in saving the planet. Apple has gone so far as building their products from mostly harmless materials.  They have also built a machine specifically for taking apart old iPhone’s and recycling them. It’s named Liam.

Meet Apple’s Liam

Liam is a line of robots that has 29 arms and can disassemble iPhones in just 11 seconds. It can do 350 an hour and 1.2 million a year. It can organise the individual parts to be reused in future models which drastically decreases their need to mine for resources from the Earth in the future. Given the fact that Apple sold a scandalous 78.3 million iPhone’s last quarter, it’s safe to say Liam will have a massive impact on Apple decreasing their carbon footprint on the Earth.

What Apple has started is incredible. And Ireland making strides towards renewable combined with the relationship we have with Apple is massive. Hopefully, other companies and countries will follow their lead in the future and we can repair the damage that past generations have done.
