FIFA 18: The Most Beautiful Game

The beast is back! Quite possibly the biggest video game franchise in the world has returned with it’s the latest instalment and in short FIFA 18 delivers in bucket loads.

While Konami has doubled down on PES, improving its on-field mechanics and fluidity we still find it difficult to look beyond FIFA each year for some very simple reasons. All those licences, the sheer longevity of gameplay through a range of game modes, complete footballing immersion and of course the matchday pomp of its presentation.

But this year FIFA 18 has moved beyond just glitz and glamour. Tweaks, minor as they may be to player animations have drastically changed dribbling, tackling, passing and striking so much in comparison to the FIFA 17, resulting in a far more complete gaming experience.

Hunter’ing for Glory

Image result for the journey 2 fifa 18

Alex Hunter is back and I for one am delighted. Last year EA took a punt bringing The Journey to the table, offering a more “human” touch on pro footy. While last years version was relatively short and obviously a first gen. This year we are treated to a truly engaging story showcasing the ups and downs of being a footballer.

With approximately 15 hours of gameplay (that’s how long it took me anyway), The Journey 2 really expands on last years outing. It starts with a FIFA Street outing in the streets of Rio de Janeiro, which is just teasing because it’s the only time you get to play this way across FIFA 18. Its fun and frantic just the way it should be. Beyond this, the storyline develops through the pre-season transfer window, bringing in transfer talk, new characters and allows you to form relationships with real-life footballers.

Decisions you make throughout the campaign will define your Hunter’s personality and allows you to unlock different aesthetic alterations. These decisions actually define your storyline too, which means although the main story stays the same, how you or I go about it could be completely different.

I really enjoyed this game mode and I was pleasantly surprised by the mini-games and side stories. The Journey: Hunter Returns is built to peak your interest and is definitely a great place to start in your FIFA 18 journey. Without giving away any of the storyline if you play Ultimate Team its worth your while completing this first as with each chapter you get a free card to use online. Trust me some of them are real doozies.

Consume all the things!

Image result for Ultimate team FIfa 18Speaking of Ultimate Team, the popular game mode also makes it’s long-awaited return. In last year’s mode, personally dropped approx 100+ hours (which according to online forums is low in comparison) into building my teams and completing challenges. Very little of this time was actually spent playing matches such is it’s depth. With FIFA 18 costing €70 for the basic version, Ultimate Team is where one gets the best best value for money. Just look a the list of Icons who have been added to the game this year! That’s not including the likes of Pele, Maradona, Ronaldinho and Fatnaldo. If you played FIFA 17’s Ultimate Team then you’re in store for a small reward in the form of extra packs when you get started.

At its core Ultimate Team is a hark back to old days of trading cards with your mates in the schoolyard with the added element of actually building a team to use online. If you haven’t delved into the game mode yet, do. It’s a great way to make a weekend disappear in the blink of an eye.

Make a date with your mates

Online play is so important in modern gaming. While standards one v one online play has become a standard one game mode which is a whole pile more communal is often times overlooked. This is the Pro Club feature which myself and 7 of the other lads recently gave a whack.

It’s frantic and completely mental. Imagine you and a group of your mates in a party completely miced up and trying to organise yourselves against a group of other lads doing the exact same thing. Feelings will get hurt, things will be said but ultimately i found its a great way to have a bit of craic with the lads on a hangover day or late at night. And yes The Potholes are our team, if your on PS4 and wan’t to give us a game give me a shout.

Swish and Flick

Before I go any further doesn’t FIFA 18 just look gorgeous. That Frostbite game engine has really been pushed to it’s limits this year and holy crap doesn’t it just look almost as good as the real thing.

In terms of actual game play it’s very much a case of it ain’t broke don’t fix it. FIFA 18 looks to resolves some of the long standing gripes but nothing more. The bane of FIFA 17 ie the set pieces remains the same, so get ready for more stress and woeful shootouts.

Where things come into their own is with player control, see that updated crossing mechanic- I know it’s a small thing but it just offers you so much more than a default ball into the box, and a double-tap for a low cross.

Other upgrades include improved AI for off the ball runs, touch ups to shooting controls and the vastly needed keeper awareness. “The keepers broken” we all have a mate who used this excuse religiously when loosing. No more will this be the case, in fact keepers almost seem too good but sure wouldn’t we all prefer this to the flaky Joe Hart’s we have gotten use too.

What I really like though is the changes in opponent AI and tactics. Over the years playing the computer controlled teams has always been the same, however this FIFA 18 has given them a serious upgrade with each of the game’s 700-plus sides being given two of 12 possible play styles. It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination Liverpool don’t play like a Klopp team and Barca won’t play tika taka , but at least ensures career mode matches against possession-heavy Arsenal, Vardy-targeting Leicester and stoic, defensive Burnley no longer feel identical.

The Verdict

In my humble opinion this is the most complete FIFA title ever! This year EA have utilised the new Frostbite engine to bring top-level graphics while adding to the pomp and presentation the series is famous for. FIFA 18 is another strong showing and we are delighted to see the return of The Journey, improvements in AI and increased fluidity in attacking play.

From Pro Clubs to Career, to online play and Ultimate Team, FIFA 18 is amazing value for money sure to keep you entertained and out of your Mrs hair for the foreseeable future. To be honest there are not a huge amount of headline features in FIFA 18 but its the small nips and tucks that EA have done that has made for the most-rounded and compelling FIFA in a good few years. Oh and as a Fulham fan it does give me the chance to bring the Premier League Title to Craven Cottage. Which is what i’m off to do now, see you on the other side.

What You’ll Need to Enter the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival

Have you ever fancied yourself as a bit of a Steven Spielberg? Or maybe you’ve had this idea for a story that you’d just love to tell. There’s nothing stopping you creating a little bit of cinematic magic and now, thanks to the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival, you can put it out to the public too.

What is the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival?

The Dublin Smartphone Film Festival is one of the most exciting events to enter our diary this year. Just a few years ago, to be any sort of filmmaker, you needed some expensive kit. Today, you’re likely to already have a phone capable of capturing great video. That’s why we’re really excited to partner with the first Dublin Smartphone Film Festival and cannot wait to see what entries are submitted by the public.

What You’ll Need to Enter the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival

To give you a little encouragement and maybe even spark some creativity, here’s our quick start guide to entering the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival.

An Idea

You might already have an idea and that could idea could even be the reason you’re entering the competition in the first place. If that’s the case, congratulations, you’ve got one of the hardest parts of creating a film boxed off.

If you don’t have an idea, don’t fret! While this can be tough, if you’re working with a blank canvas, it’s also incredibly fun. The best thing to do is grab a pen and paper and just write what comes to mind. If you’re drawing a blank, Reddit has the perfect solution; a subreddit completely dedicated to writing prompts. You might not end up creating a film on these ideas, but it might get the brain juices flowing. Here are the categories you’ll need to squeeze that idea into:

  • Best 360/VR Film
  • Cinematic Film Award
  • Best Irish Film
  • Best Animation
  • Best Fiction
  • Best Music Video
  • Best Documentary

A Smartphone

Fun fact: The vast majority of Goos3D’s videos are shot on smartphones. This particular video was shot on the Samsung Galaxy Note8, granted that was with a green screen! What I’m trying to show is the quality of smartphone video these days. Smartphone cameras are so good that you won’t need a camera better than what you’d find on a smartphone. That’s why the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival won’t accept footage shot on the likes of a GoPro.

A Video Editing App

You can edit your film on your smartphone or either a desktop or laptop. If you have a MacBook, there’s a good chance you’ve already got iMovie which is a great piece of software. Windows users are in a similar situation with Windows Movie Maker being a freebie. But again, just like smartphones disrupted the hardware side of filmmaking, they’ve done the same for video editing software.

My personal favourite is KineMaster, which is available for both Android and iOS. It’s massively powerful and is free. There’s very little you can’t do with this app that you can do with some of the top software out there and to think you can do it all on the bus is madness!

The only catch is the KineMaster watermark will appear on your video unless you fork out for the premium version which costs €3.59 per month.

You’ll Need to Mark a Few Dates and Break the Piggy Bank

Entries are open right now and you can enter through the festival’s website and entry remains open until 1 December 2017. The event itself takes place in Generator, Smithfield on 27 January 2018 and to enter a film will set you back around €7.50 to enter which is charged as $10.

That’s all you need to have in order to enter the film festival. Sure, you’ll probably need some actors, but even some creative shooting can overcome that. While that’s all you need, we definitely recommend the likes of a tripod and smartphone holder. Along with that, some additional shooting accessories, including softboxes, are totally fine to use and might make your life a little easier.

Optional: Smartphone Accessories

You can use some additional accessories with your smartphone and the only we’d most recommend is a tripod of some sorts – you don’t want the audience to get seasick. Here’s a list of accessories we use to shoot footage for Goos3D, all of which we bought on Amazon.co.uk (Note: we may make a small bit of moola if you buy any of these):

Rode VideoMicro Compact Microphone

While most smartphones pick up pretty decent audio, a directional mic can make a massive difference. This mic will focus on recording what it’s pointing at, cutting out noise behind the camera. Nothing ruins a great video like bad audio. The only catch is that for this to work with smartphones you’ll also need to buy this cable.

Pick up the Rode VideoMicro on Amazon

Arkon iPhone Tripod Mount

This is a really flexible tripod – literally. It fits any phone I’ve thrown at it, including the Note8. The tripods flexible legs mean you can wrap it around railings, barriers and even tree branches to get the perfect shot. Of course, it’ll also stand up like a normal tripod and the phone mount can be placed on a larger tripod, making this a great investment.

Pick up this tripod mount on Amazon

Smartphone Video Rig

There are countless rigs you can pick up which make holding your smartphone while filming much easier. I personally love this rig because you can mount it to a tripod on three sides and it’s got two ‘cold shoe’ mounting points (they are those spots on the top of a camera where you slide accessories in). Here you can mount the Rode mic from earlier or some additional lighting.

Pick up a smartphone video rig on Amazon

Mounted LED Light

Lighting makes a massive difference, especially if you’re thinking of using green screens at some stage. I was blown away by the difference this little light made when green screening. It also comes with a flexible fitting compatible with ‘cold shoes’ and several colour filters. Combined with the smartphone video rig, it’s a really nice little gadget to add to your filmmaking studio.

Pick up a mounted LED light

I can’t stress enough that while these accessories are great, they are all just nice to have. We’ve built up this collection of gear over a year or so. Individually, none of them will break the bank but at the same time, you don’t need anything more than an idea, a smartphone and some software to enter the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival.

DisneyLife Ireland: Disney Launches Video Streaming Service in Ireland

0

Cord-cutters, cord-nevers and refusing to grow up.

In an age where content on demand has become increasingly important, applications like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have grown to become some of the most used apps of all time. Even Sky has seen a huge number of subscribers view a lot of content in the Sky Go app. Well now, Disney has joined that party by launching DisneyLife in Ireland.

What is DisneyLife?

Disney plans to pull all of their content from Netflix but they have a plan of course. Rather than hosting all their content on Netflix, Disney has launched DisneyLife, their own video streaming platform. This is just like Netflix but with wall to wall Disney videos, from movies to TV shows, letting you relive your childhood with the classics of yesteryear. Best of all, DisneyLife is fully available in Ireland.

How Much is DisneyLife?

DisneyLife costs €6.99 per month, which might seem a little steep considering it does have a limited pool of movies and shows to choose from. Still, if you’re a parent, that’s €6.99 to buy yourself some peace and quiet and the service really is designed for family usage.

To Infinity and Beyond: What You Get for Your Money

For your monthly subscription, up to six people can have their own profile across ten different devices all personalised with your favourite Disney character avatar. Mine’s Simba. You have the choice to stream straight to your device, or download for later viewing; an absolute lifesaver for holidays or tablet viewing without an internet connection. You also have access to some nifty parental controls letting you limit the amount of time your kids can spend on the program. You can even lock the account for weekend-only use.

Speaking at the launch, Chiara Cipriani the DisneyLife general manager had this to say:

DisneyLife offers the chance to discover Disney in a way you have never been able to before. Placing characters and stories at the centre, we have opened the gates to the Castle and created this service with families and fans in mind, allowing them to explore Disney all in one place. Building on our UK launch at the end of 2015, we are delighted that DisneyLife Ireland is making Disney entertainment available to Irish fans in new ways.

Bang for your Buzz?

Each Irish household can now enjoy the full Disney experience, wherever and whenever you want. Sit the kids down in front of Toy Story, have a romantic night in with your other half while watching Beauty and the Beast or enjoy some nostalgic bliss with a spot of Pinnochio. All of these are in one handy place thanks to DisneyLife. For the kids you will also have the opportunity to stream the full suite of Disney Channels such as XD and Junior, that’s the next babysitting night sorted. The best thing about DisneyLife is that the content is never deleted, so feel free to blast out the singalongs whenever you feel.

Basically, it’s Disney Netflix, right? Well, yes but it’s also a lot more than that with the app offering loads more than just video content. Here’s what you get:

All the Movies

Go on an absolute Disney binge with DisneyLife. The app has over 400 movies to choose from, including all your Pixar favourites. So whether is a bit of Hakuna Matata or Wall-E your after, DisneyLife has got your lonely Friday nights in sorted. (Applications welcome for anyone who would like to join me and make that sound a little less sad, bring popcorn)

Kids’ TV Box Sets

I’m sure if you have kids you love and adore them and all the joy they have brought into your life. But I’m equally as sure there are also times when you just wish they would be quiet so you can nurse that hangover in peace. All those slightly annoying but highly addictive shows like Paw Patrol and Doc McStuffins can be found in this one-stop shop. With over 5,000 episodes of child-friendly shows available you can now plop the little people in front of the tv and catch that hours kip you so desperately need.

The Glorious Tunes

No word of a lie, this is my favourite part of this whole platform. Seriously, if you don’t adore some of the amazing soundtracks Disney have produced down the years, well then you’re dead inside. With over 7,000 tracks available, whether you want to rock out to Tarzan, Let it Go with Frozen or just get your Hakuna Matata on it’s all here all the time. Don’t believe me that Disney tunes are awesome, put on your headphones and listen to this! Automatic happy maker:

Bedtime Books

With around 250 audio and ebooks ready to go, never worry about bedtime stories again. Enjoy the magic and amazement of the Disney storytelling experience with included educational benefits. DisneyLife books include a built-in read-along function as well as staged reading as the child’s reading ability improves.

Movies, books and kids TV series are available in up to five languages: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Where do I sign up?

If you have small kids or are a bit of a Disney nut like me and want to avail of this service, simply pop on over to DisneyLife.com and start the one-week free trial. After the trial your membership of €6.99 kicks in until you decide to cancel. Which, let’s face it, you won’t. The app is very easy to use, in fact, you’d almost think it was designed for children.

That’s all the key stuff, but there are a few technical questions that people are asking and in this modern age of streaming, this is key stuff:

Can You Get DisneyLife on PS4?

Unfortunately, there’s no PS4 app just yet. We’ll let you know when there is.

Can You Get DisneyLife on Xbox?

As with the PlayStation app, nothing on Xbox just yet. Watch this space.

How to Chromecast DisneyLife

This is the one part of DisneyLife that works nice an easy. Within the app, you’ll see the usual casting option at the top of the app. If you’ve got a Chromecast, you’re laughing.

how to chromecast disneylife

Can You Use DisneyLife Abroad?

This is a very popular question for travelling parents. Since EU Roaming has become much more relaxed, you could feasibly do some streaming on your holidays; once you’re staying in the EU of course. Still, you’re much better off taking advantage of the app’s download function. Do that on your home WiFi and watch to your heart’s content.

So that’s that. Have a good day people because this guy is about to disappear and watch The Lion King.

You can also give the gift of DisneyLife access for 3, 6 or 12 months starting at just €20.

Note: After writing this article Jon actually did watch The Lion King, Mufasa’s death still get’s him every-time

Why It’s Time to Kill the Headphone Jack

0

This week, Google killed the headphone jack on their new Pixel 2. It got me thinking. I always thought it was a pretty stupid move by Apple last year, the same immediate reaction I had when Google launched the Pixel 2. A couple of days later, after cooling down, killing the headphone jack really does make sense. Here’s why.

Wireless Charging is Beast

Of all the features added to my smartphones over the years, wireless charging is by far my favourite. I have a Choetech wireless charger at my desk and one of Samsung’s official ones beside the bed, both of which have fast charge – a close second favourite thing about smartphones.

Many were pissed by the removal of headphone jacks because you could no longer listen to music and charge your phone at the same time. Bring a wireless charger into your life and it’s no longer a problem.

Unfortunately, Apple’s iPhone 7 and Google’s Pixel 2 don’t offer wireless charging. The iPhone 8, however, does have wireless charging. Shows they’re catching on.

Bluetooth Headphones Make Sense

Walk around Dublin and pay attention to people’s headphones. You won’t be long realising that a load of people are already using Bluetooth headphones. Here are some of the most popular ones I’ve noticed on my Dublin safari walks:

  1. Beats Powerbeats3 Earphones
  2. Jabra Pace Earphones
  3. Sony BTN 200 Headphones
  4. Skullcandy Earphones

I’ve actually seen quite a few of Apple’s Earpods but they’re stupidly expensive, the likes of Google’s new Pixel Buds look like we’re closer to finding a happy medium between price and quality when it comes to wireless headphones.

There’s Always Adapters, Right?

When all else fails, smartphones that don’t have headphone jacks do have adapters. We’re at the stage now where you don’t even have to go straight for Apple’s official Belkin adapter. Amazon Basic also offers a similar product that some believe is slightly better designed and a little bit cheaper. They even offer free delivery to Ireland on that one too.

The space saved in smartphone design by removing the headphone jack makes phones smaller and packed with more tech. Considering we have so many alternatives nowadays, maybe it’s time to embrace the death of headphone sockets.

Pixel Buds: Wireless-ish Ear Phones With Live Translation

0

I don’t make my efforts to learn German for many years a secret. What I will be keeping secret is how annoying it is knowing that I never had to learn a word in the first place. Google has just launched the Pixel 2, which is a fairly boggo standardo phone as phones go. The other hardware launched by Google stepped up the game a little, but nothing impressed like Google’s Pixel Buds.

What Are Pixel Buds?

Right, so the Pixel 2 went the way of the iPhone and killed the headphone jack. Google could only pull this off if they had some pretty kick ass wireless earphones make up for that. Sure enough, they delivered. The Pixel Buds are wireless-ish, meaning the only cable connects the left and right earbuds. This actually works to your favourite as a clever bit of design means you can actually use that wire to tuck the bud into your ear. Other than that, you’re relying on Bluetooth to connect everything together.

The buds come stored in a pack which recharges the buds up to four times on the move. The gadgetry doesn’t stop there as the buds also come with Google Assistant built in. While we’ll need to have a better look, first impressions are good with Google Assitant launching fast upon tapping the bud in your ear.

Now, of course, I wasn’t going to bust out an article on just a pair of earphones now was I?

Live Translation: We’re Living in the Future

Here it is. The inevitable reason why I shouldn’t have wasted a second learning more languages. Google’s Pixel Buds provide users with a lightning fast translator at all times. You pop in the buds which can translate forty languages within a second or two in a language you understand. When you speak back, your Android smartphone will translate your spoken language into that of the person you’re conversing with.

How to Get the Pixel Buds in Ireland

If you’ve already read about the Pixel launch last year and the Pixel 2 launch this year, you’ll see where this is going. Right now, you’ll have to try and pick up the Pixel Buds through An Post’s AddressPal service which gives you a virtual US address. We’ll keep you posted with local availability in Ireland.

How to get the Google Pixel 2 in Ireland: Everything You Need to Know

0

The Google Pixel is a funny old phone in Ireland. There was a huge amount of interest from Irish people looking for an alternative to Samsung and Apple. Unfortunately, there were no retailers ready to stock this market shaking smartphone. It was still possible to get the Google Pixel in Ireland and that what was one of our most popular articles last year. Now Google has launched the follow up with a not so creative title. Here’s everything you need to know about Google’s latest smartphone and details on how to get the Google Pixel 2 in Ireland.

So, Whats New With the Google Pixel 2?

The Let Downs

First thing’s first. Google has followed Apple and removed the headphone jack. Crap. Why would you do that? Why would you follow Apple on this of all thing? Well, the reason is they’ve made kick-ass wireless earphones which might make this less of a let-down after all, but more on that another time.

Actually, speaking of following Apple, a surprising development is where they didn’t follow the iPhone creators. Powered by USB-C charging and promising seven hours battery on a 15-minute charge, the Pixel 2 won’t have wireless charging. This is a feature I could now not live without, so it’s a pity Google hasn’t featured it.

Enough of the let downs.

What’s Great About the Google Pixel 2

At first glance, the best thing from Google’s launch event, as subjective as this might be, is the black top and white body. How upsetting to realise this is just on the bigger Google Pixel 2 XL. Such a shame this isn’t the standard style as it just looks so classy. It’s proving so popular that this more expensive model and colour has already sold out in the US. Still, looks are just looks. Better get into the nitty-gritty though, right?

‘Active Edge’ might seem a little silly, but since I’ve picked up the Note8, I actually appreciate having a physical way to launch your assistant. With the Pixel 2, a simple squeeze of the phone will launch your assistant.

Does it feel like that’s reaching a little? Well, the honest truth is very little else wow’s me about the Pixel 2. Sure enough, the fast charge seems impressive, the camera takes shots as good as any phone on the market and it’s a generally nice looking phone. The biggest win is perhaps the fact it’ll set you back little more than €700 to pick up before delivery charges and the likes.

Google seems to have focused on other hardware, like the Google Pixel Buds – again, a conversation for another day.

When Will the Google Pixel 2 Launch in Ireland?

Here we go again. Don’t hold your breath for an official place to but the Google Pixel 2 in Ireland this year. While there were murmurs that Carphone Warehouse might just stock Google’s flagship smartphone last year, that chatter never amounted to phones on shelves.

For some reason, Irish networks and Google just don’t see eye to eye on the Pixel 2 being easily available on our shores. But not all is lost. The Pixel 2 is available now, in the US, which means you can still order one and use An Post’s AddressPal to route your purchase to Ireland. You can probably add a few days onto that for AddressPal and you’ll pay a little more for delivery and customs charges.

If the US seems a little too much hassle, you can also look towards the UK. Google is one of the more logical places to order from but you’ll need to use Parcel Motel’s virtual UK address service. If you want to keep things simple, Amazon is probably the most straightforward place to pick up the Pixel 2 with this particular seller offering delivery to Ireland.

Carphone Warehouse UK is offering the Pixel 2 SIM-free but again you’ll need to use Parcel Motel. Officially, their terms and conditions state they don’t ship to lockers but we’ve heard their enforcement of that is hit and miss.

Leaked: Google To Launch Google Home Mini

0

You’d almost feel sorry for all these tech companies that try to keep things secret. It’s tough enough to wow us with gadgets when you’ve got the likes of Jon nailing iPhone X specs back in February, but now Google has Walmart doing the leaking.

What Did Walmart Leak?

Google and Amazon have been fighting it out for a while now, especially in the voice controlled device area. For Amazon, this is the Echo and Echo Dot, but Google only had the full sized Google Home. That is until now.

Google has a big press event pencilled in for tomorrow where we expect to see the Pixel 2 launched. What we weren’t expecting was a brand new Google Home device; the Google Home Mini. Some poor divil that looks after Walmart’s website clicked prematurely and launched the Google Home Mini early. While it’s since been removed, the internet is fast to grab screenshots and jot down specs. Here’s what you need to know.

What is the Google Home Mini?

The Walmart leak provided us with a sneak peek at the overdue, yet still unexpected, Google Home Mini. This is Google’s latest personal assistant powered device, a canvas covered pebble of technology. The Google Home Mini is a clear shot across the bow of Amazon in an effort to grab some market share where the cheaper Echo Dot was cleaning up.

Google Home Mini is a direct shot at Amazon Echo Dot

Simply put, the Google Home Mini is a speaker with a Google brain installed in it. You control the device with your voice, asking questions, playing music and controlling smart devices in the home to beat the band.

When is the Google Home Mini on Sale?

The page that Walmart leaked was a pre-order page, which showed the new speaker would be available from 19 October.

How Much Will This Cost?

You can expect to pay around the same as an Echo Dot for the Google Home Mini. So, you’ll be looking at around €42 excluding delivery.

How to Buy the Google Home Mini in Ireland

It’s unlikely you’ll be able to pick up Google’s latest smart assistant in Ireland. You can, however, order from Google’s US store and ship to Ireland using AddressPal.

Can’t help but feel for whoever runs that website. I once reduced everything on a site by €20. It’s easy happen.

New Luas scheme to help stamp out anti-social behaviour

For anyone who has ever been a regular commuter on the Luas in Dublin, you will have seen some weird stuff. As with any other public transport there will always been the freaks and creeps which we can do nothing about. However anti-social behaviour is something we have all seen more than we care to admit.

Regular Luas users will be very aware of the anti-social acts i’m talking about. Now while you or I have probably not actively got involved in stopping any of this bollixoligy the guys at Transdev (the Luas operator) want to make everyone’s journey safer. Hence they have launched a new service in an effort to crack down on anti-social behavior on the Luas.

Check this out:

Now these types of complaints are fairly light in comparison to some of things I’ve seen but you get the point. Any of us can now send a text to the number 5144 with the word LUAS and details of the incident, location and tram number.

According to operators they will be able to utilise existing security units more effectively and respond to a text 90 seconds. A team will then investigate the reported incident asap and having seen the tanks who work security on Luas trams, quicker response times is all they need.

Image result for luas

Simon Dobbin, the revenue protection officer with Transdev was speaking at the launch of the new service at the Luas stop by St Stephen’s Green

“It’s more common at night,” he said. “You can have younger people drinking alcohol and making nuisances of themselves. That can get very loud on the trams.

CEO of the National Transport Authority, Anne Graham has said about the new service:

“This new service means that Luas staff can be made aware of these incidents and can respond to them quicker than ever, so that journeys can be even safer and more pleasant for everybody.” she said.

At this moment in time around 90,000 passengers use the Luas every day across both the red and green line. This new simple service hopes to help reduce the amounts of incidents on the Luas. Especially when you think the new blue line is set to get up and running any day now we think this system is a long time coming.

What do you think? would you use this service? or are you a sceptic that thinks youngfellas are just going to use this as another way to wind up security? Only time will tell. One thing is for certain it’ll be interesting to see if this new service does indeed reduce anti-social behaviour on the Luas in the coming months.

Amazon’s New Toys: Echo Second Generation, Echo Spot and More

0

Pretty much out of nowhere today Amazon decided to roll out a whole range of new toys to the market. Some believe this might come as a result of their spat with Google over YouTube support for the Echo Show. Whatever the reason, who cares? We’ve got new Alexa voice-powered toys to talk about.

A Whole New Amazon Echo

Many predicted this as Amazon were flogging first generation Echos for about €100 over the past few weeks. Sure enough, Amazon has released the Amazon Echo Second Generation. The new Echo comes with a cool looking cloth finish and promises to ‘fill any room with immersive sound’.

amazon echo second generation

In all honesty, not much else has changed. Now, don’t feel like Amazon rushed this launch or anything. If you already have an Echo you won’t really benefit anything by picking up this new generation device. If you don’t have an Echo, picking between the Echo and the Echo Dot might be a little harder now with the second generation device coming in around €100. That’s the same as a first generation refurb.

The moral of the story here is they’re all really similar. Get on over to Amazon and have a look for what suits you best. If you see that they don’t deliver to Ireland, Parcel Motel is your best friend.

Amazon Echo Plus

Considering people are still adopting the concept of Echo itself, you really don’t need to worry about the Echo Plus. Unless you have plenty of connected home devices already as one major bonus with the Echo Plus is the built-in smart hub.

Amazon realised they needed to add a little more incentive to move this idea and will include a Philips Hue smart bulb in the box with each other. That’s pretty cool.

Amazon Echo Spot

Raging. Absolutely raging. Up until this morning, I thought the coolest piece of bedroom tech I had my eye on was one of those Irish-made Easca mattresses. Then Amazon announced a load of new tech, including the Echo Spot; a modern take on the bedside alarm clock. I’ve been looking to buy an alarm clock for ages to remove my reliance on my phone.

Before I ever had a chance to consider how much was in my bank account, I realised this won’t be available until December and that date is for the US launch. We might even have to wait longer for it to launch in the UK just so we can smuggle one into Ireland.

The Echo Spot looks a little like a traditional clock but the face is screen and the Spot, of course, has access to Alexa’s voice-controlled services. You’ll even be able to use this to call friends and family.

So. Do any of these new toys from Amazon tickle your fancy? Have you already got an Echo or something similar? Let us know what you have and what you think of it in the comments below.

Why Hasn’t Trump’s Twitter Been Shut Down

0

So, one of the most powerful people in the world, Donald Trump, is locked in a war of words with Kim Jong Un. Us Irish have been frantically Googling World War III despite experts reassuring everyone a North Korean war is unlikely.

The North Korean dictator has picked the national media as his weapon of choice against Trump. The Donald picked Twitter, a platform that limits what you can say to 140 characters. Wise move there Donald.

Trump’s use of Twitter has become increasingly aggressive in recent weeks as he berates the North Korean dictator following a series of Pyongyang nuclear tests. In a recent tweet, Trump basically said he’s willing to rid the world of North Korea. Of course, this is far from the first time Trump has been vocal in his aggression towards North Korea:

But when he vocalised that aggression on Twitter, isn’t he breaching Twitter’s Terms of Service?

What Twitter Terms of Service is Trump Breaching

To protect their online community, Twitter enforces a set of rules held in their Terms of Service. In short, these rules are designed to prevent violent threats (direct or indirect), harassment and hateful conduct, among other things.

When Trump decided to Tweet a GIF of him taking down a CNN logo, not only was he being incredibly childish, he was also promoting violence to a certain extent:

Now, I’ll immediately admit that’s probably a reach and is certainly a forgivable grey area for Twitter to find itself in.

Trump’s Tweet on Muslims Traveling

Trump went well beyond the grey area when he tweeted following the Brussels attack in 2016, before his presidency.

This tweet clearly breached Twitter rules on hateful conduct targeting based on religious belief. What followed was Trump’s executive order to block travellers from certain countries based purely on their national origin. Again, Twitter took no action against Trump.

But he didn’t calm down once he became president either.

Trump Implying the Destruction of North Korea

Yeah, that headline should tick pretty much every box in the Twitter Terms of Service. In one tweet, the Donald threatened to wipe out North Korea’s leadership.

Within the context of Trump’s earlier “fire and fury” statement, this is unlikely to be an attack with surgical precision which will impact some of North Korea’s 25 million person population.

Twitter simply can’t ignore the fact that Trump’s tweet is a clearly violent threat of violence, so why won’t Trump’s Twitter account be deleted?

Why Twitter Won’t Block Trump

A quick look at Google trends shows international interest in Twitter has been in decline over the past few years:

Trump’s presence on the platform has arrested that decline to a certain extent. One expert claims Trump’s immediate value to Twitter is around $2 billion – one-fifth the company’s overall value. So why would they get rid of him?

Regardless of his value to the company, Twitter needs a reason to justify keeping him. When asked by Wired if they would block Trump for inappropriate tweets, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said:

“We are going to hold all accounts to the same standards. Our policy does [account for] newsworthiness as well, and that was requested by our policy team. So we’re not taking something down that people should be able to report on and actually show that this is what the source said. It’s really important to make sure that we provide that source for the right reporting, and to minimize bias in articles.”

Will Twitter Ever Block Trump?

Yes. It does seem like it’s only a matter of time before Trump crosses some sort of line that Twitter deems unforgivable. Trump himself polices his own followership, banning the likes of Stephen King, which is why we created this workaround.

Chances are that will happen sometime after his presidency, whether that takes a full term of not remains to be seen.
