I am a huge fan of TV series and I’ve watched shows from all eras. From the Young and Restless to Game of Thrones. But sometimes I’m missing the inspiration to pick out something to watch next. I find myself in a position where I don’t know what to binge on anymore. So, I am going back to those classic 90s TV shows, which have more than 10 seasons and are perfect to pass a weekend. The best TV shows from the 90s that still have massive followings today, and their influence is felt across all of television.
So here is a top of the 90s series that need to make a comeback.
Seinfeld
A TV show about nothing that became about something and turned out to be everything. How do you explain Seinfeld to someone from Generation X? If you’ve never experienced the sarcastic and hilarious humour of Seinfeld, it is time to do so. Perfect for binge watching.
Friends
Who doesn’t know Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe and Joey. F.R.I.E.N.D.S? The story of six aimless New Yorkers growing into adulthood. It’s been 13 years since the finale, but Friends is still watched, not on DVD anymore but on Netflix. Not many TV shows can say they defined a generation like Friends did.
The Simpsons
The Simpsons are likely the most famous family in the world. To watch The Simpsons in one extended viewing from start to finish is a rare and beautiful treat that you need to experience once in your lifetime. You will never forget it.
Sex and the City
What could be better than four fabulous women talking about men, sex, drinks and fashion? You could be surprised that you feel you can relate to a show almost 20 years later — except for, you know, the flip phones and lack of Tinder and Uber.
That 70s Show
Hello Wisconsin!
If those words don’t bring up memories of hanging in the back of a Vista Cruiser or “hanging and baking” in the basement, it’s time to get educated on a little piece of TV series we call That 70s Show. Yes, you’re now reading an article about series from the 90s about a show based in the 70s.
So, what do you think when someone says 90s TV shows? Is it one we missed out? Be sure to let us know.
Just how many phones will launch in your lifetime? Remember in The Simpsons where everyone got really bored with Nasa launching people into space? Well, that’s happened with smartphone launches too. All we ask is that you give the new Samsung Galaxy S8 a chance. Honestly, it’s not just another new Samsung phone. We’re here to tell you why.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 could be the nicest phone ever
Ok, first of all, I’ll admit I’m a Samsung fan. The Note7 was a disaster, but not just for Samsung. I saw the phone at its Dublin launch and fell in love. When the phone was pulled I wondered if I could love again. Looking at the Galaxy S8, I think it’s time to try for love again.
The Galaxy S8 design: Bezels are so last year
Coining the phrase “infinity display”, Samsung has killed the bezel. The bezel is the non-screen part of your phone’s body that visible from the front. Combined with the huge 18:9 ratio screen and you’ve got an incredible looking piece of kit. Yes, there are some fears around the increased chances of total destruction, but still – pretty.
To give you some context to the size of the new Samsung phones, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are 5.8-inches and 6.2-inches respectively. Last year’s beast smartphone, the Galaxy S7 Edge was just 5.5-inches. Other than that, there’s loads rocking on the Galaxy S8 with screen improvements, camera upgrades – you know, the usual craic. We want to show you the really cool new toys that make this amazing.
You won’t even know your unlocking your phone
Some phone users unlock their phone over 80 times per day. Honestly, I think that’s a conservative figure. Anyway, at first look, Samsung would appear to have complicated unlocking your phone. The fingerprint sensor is up by the rear camera now as there’s no button on the front.
Samsung has a trick up their sleeve. The Galaxy S8 comes with two new ways of unlocking your new Samsung phone:
Iris Scanner
This was one of the Note7’s great innovations. To unlock your phone, you lined up your eyes with circles on the screen. We could probably add this to our list of James Bond tech that really exists. We’ll have to wait and see just how fast this is, but it was slower than fingerprint unlocking on the Note7. If it’s not fast enough for you, there’s one more trick up Samsung’s sleeve.
Facial Recognition
This is not the first time we’ve seen facial recognition on an Android phone. It is the first time it’s been done right. Early reports suggest that it’s fast and reliable, with Samsung sacrificing some security for user experience. For verifying payments and the likes, you’ll need to use retina scanning, fingerprints or your pin.
It’s got USB-C, a headphone socket and wireless charging
USB-C is the new standard port for new devices. Still, I wasn’t convinced Samsung would take the leap with USB-C since they left it off the Note7. Sure enough, they have and they’ve kept the headphone socket too. Personally, I’m delighted they’ve also kept wireless charging which has fast become my favourite thing about owning a Samsung. The official Samsung wireless charger is a kind of dock, but there’s also another dock you can get for the Galaxy S8.
Samsung DeX: A mad, but brilliant, notion
Admittedly, DeX is not going to be for everyone. DeX is a special dock that converts your new Samsung phone into a desktop computer. Immediately, I could imagine this being great for connecting to your TV at home. Really, DeX does aim to take the place of a computer. Will there be too many gaps for the Galaxy S8 to fill this job full time but time will tell. To be fair, at first look DeX looks pretty comprehensive.
Bixby: The new Samsung personal assistant
Irish people are not going to be talking to their phones anytime soon. Even with the international popularity of Apple’s Siri, Irish people just think talking to a piece of tech is a step too far. Still, Samsung don’t care and are bringing their own personal assistant to the party.
Called Bixby, your new Samsung personal assistant can carry out some simple tasks. If you’re looking at a photo that’s sideway, ask Bixby to rotate it. Naturally, you can then ask your assistant to send the photo too. The more connected devices you have, the more useful your assistant as Bixby can control the lot. Okay, so like Siri, Bixby is a bit of a gimmick.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 Irish launch date and pricing
As is par for the course, the main retailers in Ireland are offering pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S8. The official Irish release date for the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus is 28 April. You can pre-order now and get the phone eight days early. Here’s how the networks compare.
Get the Samsung Galaxy S8 on Vodafone
Vodafone will be offering their customers the Galaxy S8 on all their plans. Pre-order is open until 19 April and they even have pricing available already:
Three should be seeing a lot of interest in the Galaxy S8. Most Three customers were recently able to leave their contracts and still can until 3 April. Right now, Three are showing the Galaxy S8 pricing with their current suite of plans. Just remember, you’ll never pay a bill on this monthly cost. Here are the actual monthly and up-front costs:
While not offering the best value in the market, Meteor is still a popular choice in Ireland. eir’s pricing is a little harder to work out, but it’s not a million miles off from Meteor’s anyway. You can pick up the Galaxy S8 from Meteor through pre-order at the below prices:
One of Ireland’s younger networks, iD runs on Three. iD is rather confusing, but they offer flexibility and transparency. While still a considerable unknown in the Irish market, it’s understandable if you’re hesitant. Still, it’s worth having them in the mix. iD are actually cheaper than some of the more established networks.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 may become available on other Irish networks in the coming days. Right now, we’re still waiting on Tesco Mobile and Virgin Media.
Ah Snapchat, how did we live without thee. The daily pics on the bowl, the rude stuff and the general timeline of a hard night with your mates. Yes, Snapchat is great craic and our very own Dean is a connoisseur of some fine snaps. Add him you won’t be disappointed – munsterboy92. Anyway, in case you were not aware, Snapchat attributes a score to each person based on a “special equation combining the number of Snaps you’ve sent and received, Stories you’ve posted, and other factors.” As for the factors affecting your Snapchat score, we haven’t a notion.
Boost your Snapchat score
Recently it came to light that one way you can top up your Snapchat score by collecting the hidden trophies within the app. It does sounds very similar to the way game consoles add some extra spice to your life with achievements. Just like the PS4 trophies or the Xbox achievement system, Snapchat will unlock certain trophies every time the user reaches a certain milestone or performs particular acts. Nothing too adult in terms of acts of course.
So apart from the bragging rights is there any real purpose to these achievements? Well no, but that does not mean they aren’t a bit of fun.
How to boost your Snapchat score even more
So here’s the list and how to get them, let us know how many you have collected and see if you can beat us:

Happy snapping folks.
The mysterious case of Mr. Dax Shepard has always struck me as strange. At face value, he seems to have all the tools needed to be a constant leading man. He’s heavily involved in the latest classic reboot – ‘CHiPs’ so how does he do?
Why Dax should be a Hollywood lead
Shepard started out on MTV’s Punk’d and rose to considerable fame back in the early naughties. He’s got the action star looks and a weird off-beat personality. It seems odd that he wouldn’t be in more high profile roles. Maybe comes down to the fact that he seems to be a man that prefers being behind the camera over bring in front of it. Lately, he’s been trying his hand at directing like in his most recent effort ‘CHiPs’. Actually, he’s managed to write, star in and direct the cop-show reboot. If nothing else, it’s commendable just from the sheer amount of effort involved to pull off all three at the same time. It’s like trying to keep three plates spinning at the same time.
Unfortunately, if you were to listen closely while the movie was playing you’d probably hear the sounds of those plates smashing over and over again.
What’s CHiPs all about
Shepard himself is Jon Baker, a former world class stunt bike driver. Baker is forced to take a job as a highway patrolman after a string of nasty crashes destroyed his reputation. At the same time, he’s hoping to repair his marriage with his insane reformed groupie turned wife. Added layer of humour here is his wife being played by Shepard’s actual wife Kristen Bell. He becomes partners with rebel FBI agent Castillo. Together they try to take down a group of patrolmen who work part time as armed robbers.
Is the CHiPs remake any good?
There’s no point dressing it up. CHiPs is not a good movie. Not even close. I’d compare it to another remake of a beloved 70’s cop show – 2003’s Starsky and Hutch. While not a perfect movie by any stretch of the imagination it still at least kept to the more likeable aspects of the source material. Here, though? It’s just raunchy joke falling flat after another. The plot threads literally go nowhere. While the general idea behind the movie had some promise, with such awful lacklustre writing it never really got off the ground.

You may have forgotten a birthday or someone was just too awkward to shop for. Regardless, tech gift cards are some of the best last minute gifts on the market.
But aren’t gift cards a little impersonal?
Gift cards are considered by many to be a last resort gift, only to be offered when all other options have been exhausted. But nowadays, a gift card could be free music for a month or the same as a DVD boxset. Of course, if you can get something that’s totally meaningful and the likes go for it. But if you’re really stuck, or caught out at short notice, gift cards are great. You can usually email them to people too, so even on days like Christmas day you can get them.
The Spotify gift card
Spotify has made listening to the latest tunes so easy, few people even steal music anymore. A while back, we compared the best music streaming services on the market. Spotify is still our favourite. The music streaming service also updated their terms and conditions lately. The update allows Premium for Family users to have up to six other family members on their account. No limit is placed upon use, but terms do state that users should reside at the same address.
I digress. Spotify gift cards have some other great benefits. First, there’s a range of amounts you can buy the gift cards for. This is great because there’s an option to suit every relationship type. But that’s not the best bit. If you’re caught out at the last minute, Spotify fulfils these gift cards online. Instant gift solution.
Spotify membership ranges from 1 to 12 months at €10 to €120.

The Amazon gift card
We’re big fans of Amazon.co.uk and have gone over how to get delivery to Ireland when sellers only ship to the UK – often for free. An Amazon gift card is essentially the power to buy anything. Amazon has a massive range of items on sale. You can also benefit from the weaker Sterling at the moment so it’s win-win.

The Netflix gift card
How we watch TV has changed. Even if you are a Sky customer, I’d wager you’re watching more and more of your shows on demand. If you’re a Virgin Media customer, you likely hate their customer care. I digress.
Christmas 2015 saw Netflix release Making a Murderer. This was the first time I truly binged on a show. In two days I was outraged and shocked at what I was viewing. Netflix has since commissioned more original content and is constantly adding to a great library of entertainment. By gifting a friend or family member Netflix, you’re not just gifting them with great shows. You’re also saving yourself the hardship of them borrowing your details.
The only drawback is you will need to think ahead a little. Netflix memberships cannot be bought online. You can pick them up in stores like Tesco, Harvey Norman and Game Stop.
The GameStop gift card
Probably one of the most flexible gift cards available. GameStop gift cards are great because most people like to buy their own games. Also, a whole family could get these and let someone put them together to buy a bigger item like a console. GameStop is also ahead of many Irish retailers, as they allow you to buy online and choose virtual delivery. You can also redeem gift cards with online purchases. These really are a must remember for convenience and emergencies.
[vc_btn title=”Gift a GameStop Voucher” color=”danger” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gamestop.ie%2FGiftCard%2FAddToCart||target:%20_blank|”]
Google Play and iTunes gift cards
People really don’t like paying for apps, and that’s a pity. Some great apps, such as TomTom Go Mobile, are worth every penny. Treating a loved one to either Google Play or iTunes gift cards allows them to let the hair down and buy a premium app. These gift cards are also great for a young family member that might have an old phone. They’ll love the chance to get some premium apps.
Surprisingly, Google Play don’t allow you to gift store credit online. Apple does provide a service where you can send gift vouchers online. Fantastic if you’re caught out at the last minute and sure everyone has an iPhone.
[vc_btn title=”Gift an iTunes Voucher” color=”black” align=”center” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.apple.com%2Fie%2Fshop%2Fgift-cards%2Fitunes-electronic||target:%20_blank|”]
Hopefully, you can now see why not to rule out gift cards. One4All vouchers are a little generic, but with these tech gift cards, you can really gift a loved one something they’ll appreciate.
Taboo fans are more than excited about the next season of the gritty period drama starring Tom Hardy, Oona Chaplin, Jonathan Pryce and Mark Gatiss. The eight-part series aired in January on BBC One in the UK and FX in the US. The series is co-written by Hardy, his dad and Stephen Knight. Taboo production cost millions of pounds per episode, but it was worth it. It has received excellent reviews across the board.
Fact or fiction: Who is James Delaney?
Over eight episodes, we watched a tense drama, set in 1814. The drama stars Tom Hardy as James Delaney. He is an explorer who is getting involved in murder, betrayal and dark conspiracies. Despite some doubts amongst fans, Delaney is completely fictional.
Tom Hardy mentioned that he wanted his character to be a blend of different classical characters. Hardy “wanted James Delaney to be like a classical hero, a man of action, but someone who also has a depth of depravity to him and this great ability to say ‘fuck off’.”
Series two will be bigger and better
Writer Steven Knight said “Delaney will continue to explore many realities as he takes his band of misfits to a new world”. Piers Wenger, head of drama at the BBC, mentions that season two promises something “daring and different”.
Knight believes “explosive stuff is going to happen, which would be great, should it happen. There’s a great destination for it, but I don’t know if we’re in a position to talk about the actual details of it”.
Hardy “is grateful and excited to continue [his] relationship with the BBC and FX in contributing to British drama.”
When is Taboo Season 2 out?
It’s not yet known when Hardy will be returning as James Delaney. We hope we see him as soon as possible back on screen. Till then we can see him as Alfie Solomons in the fourth series of Peaky Blinders.
Even if you haven’t played the IMDb number game yet, you’ll find the fact mine is 69 amusing. What’s the game all about and more importantly – what’s your IMDb number?
Where has this IMDb number game come from?
If you’ve already read about our favourite podcasts, you can add another to the list. This simple game came to my attention through the brilliant Film Fandango podcast where David Reed and Marek Larwood (2 British jobbing actors/comedians) sit down and chat about whatever movie they may have each seen that week. Through this, I have been introduced to some brilliant films that would have passed me by, such as World’s Greatest Dad, Blue Ruin and Superbob. That said, I don’t always agree with them. They also loved Bone Tomahawk, a film which left me cold.
What’s the IMDb number game all about?
Anyway, back to the IMDb number game. As you are all aware, IMDb is the online mecca for all film fans. Millions of people all around the globe are given the opportunity to rate any movies that they see out of 10. IMDb then aggregate these scores and present this as the IMDb rating. So to play the game, you simply go to their top 250 movies and start at the top. You work your way down until you get to the first one that you haven’t seen yet. This is your IMDb number.
What makes this fun is that it changes pretty regularly. For example, Logan has recently popped in at number 55 and La La land spent a couple of weeks in the top 20 until people realised that it wasn’t actually all that.
A fun game that gets you watching quality movies
What it also does is give you a list of what are generally accepted to be really great movies. It is a populist list, not one compiled by critics or movie buffs so Casablanca is down in the 30’s, Sunset Boulevard is in the 50’s and Citizen Kane is in at 77. These are all great movies, but I will be watching The Good, The Bad & The Ugly again before I think about revisiting any of them.
On 20 September, NBC released a very different kind of drama series. ‘This Is Us‘ became the 2016-2017 season’s surprise hit. The show is packed with 18 exciting episodes about life and family like you have never seen before on TV. Best of all, there’ll be a second and third season, but what is ‘This Is Us’ all about?
What’s ‘This Is Us’ all about?
‘This Is Us’ starts out telling a story of apparently unrelated people. As the pilot ends, we’ve learned the characters are in fact a family. We come to know the peculiar family through flashbacks, unveiling clues to the puzzle of their lives. The show is about love, life and death. The people you welcome into your heart and the fact we all move on. This fact colours everything in life. It’s what makes life special, and also make this show unique and touching.
‘This Is Us’ looks at the drama and comedy of people lives, along with the everyday problems we all experience. The show exposes the emotions and insecurities of the characters, who are each fighting their own battles.
Meet The Pearsons
Rebecca and Jack Pearson are a married white couple living the perfect life. They’ve survived a lot, largely down to the strength of their love. Death enters their lives when they lose one of their triplets during birth. Determined to leave the hospital with three children they adopt a black boy named Randall.
The three grow up to live very different lives – not simply down to different skin colour. Kate has to face her obesity. Kevin is a successful actor desperately seeking acknowledgement and to be takenseriously. Randall stresses a lot but has a perfect family, though he’s eager to find his biological father.
You’ll fall in love with Jack (Milo Ventimiglia), one of the dearest characters for the fans. He’s a perfectly imperfect dad who fights for his family. Rebecca (Mandy Moore) is a strong mother with plenty of secrets and a burning desire to sing.
William is Randal’s biological father. He’s an extremely lovable character owing to his kindness, compassion and the story of his life: hard but beautiful.
What happens in the show?
Without giving too much away, ‘This Is Us’ uncovers the past and present of these characters’ lives. As is the case in real life, nothing will be easy for them with plenty of drama and tears afoot – keep the tissues nearby. The really good news is NBC renewed ‘This Is Us’ for second and third season. Season 2 will likely premiere in the autumn. NBC are yet to confirm an exact date.
Still, good to know if you binge-watch now you don’t have long to wait. It’s not yet on Netflix, but here’s hoping you can watch it here soon.
It’s a tale as old as time and a story that’s loved by young and old the world over. This weekend saw the release of Disney’s much anticipated live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. The original animated film was released way back in 1991 and has remained a cult classic ever since. The release of the new film has generated a lot of excitement and many predictions were made about whether Disney could pull it off again.
As a huge fan of the original film, I admit that I was slightly sceptical about the whole thing. I mean, is the remake ever better than the original? Surprisingly enough, this film managed to exceed my (pretty low) expectations.
Burning question: Does Emma Watson ruin Belle?
I suppose the initial question we all have is how similar this version is to the original. Let’s start with the obvious, did Emma Watson disappoint as Belle? To answer that question, no she did not! There was a lot of hype surrounding the casting of Emma Watson and how she would portray the iconic Disney princess. She wouldn’t have been my first choice for the role but in the end, she delivered a fantastic performance. Watson portrays Belle as an intelligent, courageous young woman and is incredibly likeable throughout the film. Dan Stevens is also on point with his depiction of the Beast and there’s a genuine chemistry between the two which really adds to the authenticity of their on-screen relationship.
The film also hosts a star-studded cast and sees the likes of Ewan McGregor (Lumière), Sir Ian McKellen (Cogsworth) and Emma Thompson (Mrs Potts) portray the beloved characters from the original film. My biggest criticism is probably McGregor’s attempt at a French accent but that I can forgive! The villainous duo of brutish Gaston (Luke Evans) and his bumbling sidekick Le Fou (Josh Gad) are also two of the film’s most prominent characters and, in my opinion, stole the show on many occasions.
Is Beauty and the Beast a trip or stumble down memory lane?
Despite the obvious differences between animation and live-action, the film bears many similarities to the original. Most notable similarities appear in terms of music and dialogue. You can expect to hear all your old favourite musical numbers as well as four new original songs. Disney did not stray from the original and the whole CGI aspect didn’t overpower the storyline. The cinematography was stunning. In many scenes, it felt like the original animation had literally come to life. The film also gave a more detailed background on each of the characters. This allowed us to learn more about them which really brought a new dimension to the film.
Is the remake better than the original?
Is the remake better than the original? That’s hard to say, as the original holds its own special meaning for so many Disney-lovers. However, this film stands out as one of the better remakes which have been released in recent years, such as Cinderella. Whether you’re a hardcore Disney fan or just an avid cinema-goer, this film will not disappoint and is worth a watch.
