Clockwork Synergy: Affordable silicone smartwatch bands

0

The Huawei Watch ships with a standard leather band leaving us searching for a more sports-friendly band. We discovered Google project Mode but felt it was too pricey, leading to our discovery of Clockwork Synergy‘s silicone smartwatch bands.

What do Clockwork Synergy do?

Clockwork Synergy are smartwatch band specialists, with over ten years experience in the industry. Offering both a wide range of materials and colours, Clockwork Synergy most recently moved into manufacturing watch bands for wearables. This is where we became very interested in their bands.

The range of smartwatch bands

Huawei Watch bandThe wearable accessory specialists offer a wide range of bands for various smartwatch users. Some of the pioneers of the market feature including our beloved Pebble smartwatches. Naturally, you will also find bands for the Apple Watch and a wide range of Android Wear devices, including the Fossil Q Founder, both Moto 360 models and of course the Huawei Watch.

Features of the Clockwork Synergy silicone smartwatch bands

While researching the best fitness wearables on the market, the Huawei Watch emerged as a potential suitor. The problem was the leather strap being hugely unsuitable for exercise. And so began the journey which led to Clockwork Synergy. We got some of the silicone range designed especially for the Huawei Watch sent out to us and here’s what we thought.

Silicone smartwatch bands

Spotting a gap in the wearable accessory market, Clockwork Synergy set out to create a very affordable option for smartwatch users. While they are affordable, the quality doesn’t let up. Our biggest concern would be that a band at such a low price would fall straight off our wrist. Fortunately, that was not the case as the band fit the device perfectly.

The other concern we had was the material irritating the skin, but again Clockwork Synergy’s experience in the industry shone through as the bands were extremely comfortable giving no issue, even with prolonged wear. Please note some of the work out sessions were not so prolonged due to a distinct lack of fitness from the author.

Customisation

multi-colour silicone smartwatch bandsThe range of colours available ensures all users will find a band that suits their taste. Better still, the options are not limited to the colour of band, but the combination of band colour with buckle style. You can choose a buck from a nice variety, including brushed steel and rose gold.

We particularly liked the inclusion of a pink, rose-gold watch strap which made what was a very masculine watch, feminine.

Quick release smartwatch band

Quick release silicone smartwatch bandsAnd to our favourite feature: the quick release. Obviously, given our desire to find a band that we could quickly pop off and swap out, traditional watch straps simply wouldn’t cut it. The guys over at Clockwork include the quick release functionality seen on the official Huawei Watch bands, making it extremely convenient to change between business and sports.

The verdict

While these silicone smartwatch bands are available at a low price the quality does not match. Sure enough, it’s just a simple smartwatch band, but they breathe a new life into your wearable. While the Google Mode does achieve something unique, they are expensive and don’t really provide anything more convenient than these silicone bands. Transform your wearable from business watch to fitness tracker in just a few seconds it takes to swap the bands. This bands are available starting at €12 and can be bought on the company website.

Google Duo: Video calling is about to get popular

0

Google are just about to launch their new video calling app: Google Duo. We take a look at why this is a really big deal for everyone

Why do we need Google Duo?

There is currently no shortage of video calling apps on the market. It started with Skype, now owned by Microsoft, and hit the mainstream with Apple’s Facetime. Unfortunately, by being innovators, Skype gained a reputation for being pretty crappy quality and Facetime is typically Apple in being limited to iOS devices.

Google have a history of creating universal platforms. First of all, there was Android, which needs no introduction. In the near future, we expect to see virtual reality being standardised with the launch of Google Daydream. With Google’s track record, it’s easy to see why we’re excited about Google Duo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIeMysX76pM

What makes Google Duo different?

While Skype is available on all major platforms, it’s not very popular because, well they screwed up so many times with video lag and audio that makes it sound like your speaking into a Pringles can. While Facetime is brilliant, Apple never saw fit to develop an app for Android. Of course, Facebook Video Calling should have been a massive success, but there were huge trust issues around the company forcing Messenger on users.

Google is a largely trusted company and while Apple boasts the most popular smartphones on the market, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone without a Gmail account. This means for most people, it will be quite easy for everyone to adopt Google Duo.

Google Duo features

Knock Knock

The worst part of any call, video or phone, is that first second. You might not be sure who’s calling, what the context is or if it’s worth putting trousers on. Google Duo’s Knock Knock lets you see a brief video of who is calling you. This sets you up for the call and even lets you be a little creative about encouraging them to pick up.

Google Duo Knock Knock

End-to-end encryption

Thanks to one Mr. Robert Snowden, the public now understands the importance of security. Google Duo, like WhatsApp, will provide end-to-end encryption. This basically means that your video call is secure and will only be visible to you and who you call – no one can intercept it in the middle.

Simplicity

We leave this for last, but really it will be the key to Duo’s success. All you need to get up and running with Duo will be an Android or iOS device and a phone number. You can find other users with just that phone number. This removed the need to search for people by username or email address. Combine this with the likelihood that Android phones will ship with Duo as standard and the scene is set for Duo to grow in popularity very quickly indeed.

Download Google Duo

Google Duo is currently rolling out internationally so you can download it for Android and iOS. It is rolling out in stages, so if you can’t download now you can preview on iOS and pre-register on Android.

Coding for Kids: If you thought maths was important…

0

Helping out with homework is par for the course parenting, but new “coding for kids” initiatives could mean big changes for parents.

It recently emerged that coding might be introduced in schools. Coding for kids has potentially massive benefits with children learning the new essential skills and avenues for older generations to upskill opening up too.

Why is “coding for kids” an important idea?

Coding powers all technology

Technology is a part of everyday life now. We can’t live without it anymore. If every single computer device in the world shut down all at once, society would collapse. We use it for work, contacting each other, buying things and asking every question imaginable. It manages life-preserving systems and balances our stock markets, forecasting economic changes, stopping a worldwide financial collapse.

Shift in educational requirements

Technology has become insanely advanced in recent years. We’re sure you’ve all heard that the phone in your pocket is more powerful than the computers that sent a man to the moon. Few were taught the skills required to build these devices in school – many people taught themselves. Today, educators have realised the importance of computing and coding in the classroom, potentially proving more practical than Pythagoras’ Theorem.

Panicking at the thought of helping your kids out with their HTML?

First of all, don’t worry – it’s currently in the planning phase, so you have some time. With that said, coding is a great skill for you to learn for yourself and if you have kids, why not get a headstart? Programmes like the hugely popular and successful CoderDojo are well worth checking out, providing your kids (and you) with a great start in coding. You can even start building the foundations at home are apps you can download onto devices to start teaching your kids from an early age.

Apps to help you and your kids with coding

Coding for Kids: Tynker

coding for kids tynkerTynker is a web based coding application built to teach kids how to code from scratch. They can actually get to the point where they can create games that they can play. Starting from the bottom and working their way up, kids learn at their own pace in order to learn easily and have fun at the same time. Tynker provides an online course which develops parents or teachers, upskilling prior to passing on these skills to children. Tynker is described as suitable for 8 to 16-year-olds but at the ripe old age of 24, I can vouch for it being enjoyable for most. Plus it’s free.

Coding for Kids: Hopscotch

Hopscotch is an iOS app similar to Tynker, but further simplified. Like Tynker, you can create games, but Hopscotch goes further in encouraging users to build mini-websites, patterns, and drawings. Hopscotch teaches you the core concepts of coding and problem-solving, providing more of a challenge as users progress. Developing practical problem-solving skills as well as coding from a young age is providing your children with priceless skills at a very young age.

Or they could just use Hopscotch to recreate the entire Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer from emojis.

Coding for Kids: ScratchJr

coding for kids scratchjrScratchJr is an online tool providing written and animated guides for coding. Kids can create their own stories and watch them afterwards. We already imagine the kids loving the look on your face as you watch their creation unfold, making this a great bonding opportunity.

These are just three of the countless online coding platforms you can check out with your kids. Going beyond developing your children’s skills, if you have an interest in coding this is a great place to start. Parents are fighting a daily battle to wrestle kids away from screens so coding provides an opportunity to convert some of this zombifying screen time into productive skill learning. We can’t stress enough how beneficial coding is at a young age, teaching much more than just how to build an app. It’s important that we being considering coding a language and a discipline.

In case you don’t believe us…

Coding for Kids Josh BellThis is 16-year-old Josh Bell. Last year, Josh’s company turned over £250,000. This company, founded in Josh’s bedroom, was a hotel-booking website which over 95,000 hotels signed up to. The idea started after a conversation with a hotel owner and at the age of 15 he owned a company. Josh achieved these amazing feats because of self-taught coding. Imagine the possibilities for a generation immersed in coding. That’s why we believe in coding for kids.

Listen to YouTube in the background on iPhone and Android

0

The ability to listen to YouTube in the background of your iPhone or Android is a feature people have wanted for years. Unfortunately, app creators have been tied by YouTube’s terms of service forbidding the playing of videos in the background. Fortunately, we’ve found two ways to overcome this for both iPhone and Android.

Listen to YouTube in the background on iPhone

Apps make our lives easy every day. Not many realise that apps also place limitations on what you can do sometimes. The YouTube app is a great example of convenience and limitations. Of course, you can watch a huge range of videos, but with the app running in the background. This makes it impossible to listen to music with the screen off. Actually…

You can’t listen to the audio from videos in the background through the app, but there is a really simple workaround.

Play audio from YouTube in the background with Safari

play youtube in the background on iPhone

You’re reading the headline, thinking it can’t be so simple right? Here’s what you need to do in order to play YouTube in the background when using an iPhone:

  1. Open Safari browser
  2. Navigate to YouTube
  3. Select awesome video of your choice
  4. Press the home button
  5. Swipe up from bottom of screen to load quick navigation (Control Centre)
  6. Press play

It really is that simple. The iPhone system remembers the clip you were watching with YouTube via Safari and allows the Control Centre to play in the background. Beautiful.

Listen to YouTube in the background on Android

Unusually, iPhones are a little more accommodating for this workaround as you’ll need an app for Android. You’re likely familiar with the one you need too. In order to listen to YouTube in the background on Android you need to download is Mozilla Firefox browser and follow these steps:

  1. Open the Firefox browser
  2. Navigate to YouTube
  3. Select awesome video of your choice
  4. Press the home button

You’ll notice that when you press the home button and the Firefox app closes, your video continues to play. This means you can turn off your screen or go about checking Facebook while the music plays in the background.

It’s that simple. We love using Spotify, but this is a great and free alternative providing access to a huge database of music. We’ll be using this for loads of podcasts and TED Talks.

Google and the Pirate Bay – It’s complicated

0

For those of you who are passionate about file sharing you may be noticed the Pirate Bay is more difficult that usual to access. Likewise, is the recently decommissioned Kick Ass Torrents. In Ireland, eir and Virgin Media make life a little more difficult for those hoping to access the Pirate Bay, blocking direct access But what about Google?

Google

Many years ago you would have been laughed at for buying stocks in a funny startup called Google. In fact, the term startup wasn’t even commonly used then. Way back in the early days, Google had a mantra – “don’t be evil”. At the time this was a jab at the other large tech corporations who were out to make a buck with little care for the end users of their products. Nowadays Google tracks our every move, using collecting information for advertising, leading many to believe they’ve strayed from the motto “don’t be evil”.

Google and the Pirate Bay

In May, users familiar with the process of visiting the Pirate Bay were greeted with a “Deceptive site ahead” warning in their Google search. This wasn’t Google on a moral tirade against file sharing. There was actually some malware injected into the advertising on the Pirate Bay page. So, first of all that knocks on the head any thoughts that Google was bowing to Hollywood.

Google promoting the Pirate Bay?

rio 2016 google rich snippetWith many ISPs blocking access to the Pirate Bay, the first port of call for users is often using a proxy site. A proxy site is a carbon copy of the original site on a different domain, allowing users to bypass roadblocks. Right now, if you Google search for “Pirate Bay proxy” you will be greeted by the usual Google search results. Google have also gone one better.

pirate bay and googleGoogle regularly displays rich content at the top of searches – Rio 2016 (above) being a great example. A very similar snippet appears for Pirate Bay proxies. Listed for the user are sites broken down by how fast they operate. Such a service, while likely automated, is some sort of showing from Google that file sharing doesn’t really bother them.

How long this will remain for is unknown, but it’s refreshing to see that there’s a little bit of that old Google motto remaining.

Review: Suicide Squad

0

This month saw the much anticipated release of the DC Universe’s latest creation: Suicide Squad. And while the hype train has slowed down because of the misfire that was Batman Vs Superman, Suicide Squad has, on some level, bought Warner Bros and DC some credibility in the ongoing battle with Marvel over cinema bragging rights.

The context of Suicide Squad

Leading on from the Dawn of Justice, the story begins with Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis. Waller is a government operative charged with assembling a contingency plan following the death of Superman. Fears have grown that the next Superman might not be so friendly. The plan? Assemble a team of criminal misfits, rebels and psychos, or meta-humans as Waller calls them, and give them an ultimatum. They either work as a team under her command, or suffer death by head explosion. Well, at least you can’t say DC aren’t dramatic.

The Suicide Squad characters

Suicide-Squad-characters

Mild spoiler alert

We then get a quick and dirty insight into each character, complete with their own on screen bio (Colonel Flag has a -3 golf handicap – vital information don’t you know!). Deadshot and Harley Quinn quickly establish themselves as the main characters from here on. Both get more attention than the other members, namely El Diablo, Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc, Slipknot and Katana.

Will Smith plays Deadshot, a casting announcement that concerned most DC Comic fans. However, Smith manages to carry off the role quite well, striking the balance of comic book assassin with a good guy undertone with relative ease. Deadshot enjoys a back story similar to that of Ant Man, with less of a comedic approach that Smith carries through quite well.

suicide squad harley quinn gif

But it’s Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn who steals the show. Robbie makes the film as much about Quinn as it is about the rest of the cast combined. Quinn’s back story is told in greater detail than the rest of the Suicide Squad. Harley’s scenes with Jared Leto as Joker are as good as you’ll see in any comic book movie. Leto as the Joker, or Mr J as he’s more affectionately known in the movie, is a completely different take to what anyone will be used to from Ledger’s or Nicholson’s previous incantations. Leto’s method acting style still won’t win any awards, but still he deserves kudos for what is one of his most sinister roles to date.

The cracks begin to show

jared leto suicide squad gifHowever, once you get past the notable performances from Smith, Leto and Robbie, and the impressive soundtrack, the film feels like it’s a gap filler for DC’s Justice League movie. And a rushed one at that. There aren’t too many moments of note for the rest of the Squad. The ridiculously named Captain Boomerang is more concerned with his social life than anything else. El Diablo mopes around like a child and Slipknot is barely in the film for five minutes before he… well, you’ll see for yourself.

Suicide Squad: The verdict

Throughout the film, you’ll feel DC are trying too hard to catch up with Marvel. This is to level the playing field between the Justice League and the Avengers. The chemistry between Harley Quinn and Joker is strong enough to warrant its own standalone movie. Ideally this would have preceded Suicide Squad in order to develop the plot. And that’s where this falls down against the other films in the genre. The plot feels crammed, rushed and not fully thought through. Suicide Squad is an enjoyable two hours in the cinema. Just expect to leave the cinema feeling Suicide Squad is an opportunity missed by DC and Warner Bros.

How does the Samsung Note 7 rate alongside the Galaxy S7?

0

You read the headlines correctly – Samsung opted to christen their next big launch the Note 7. This of course skips straight passed the 6 to align the Note range with the Galaxy series. Many are asking just what makes the Samsung Note 7 different from the stunning Galaxy S7 range, so we seek the answer.

Samsung Note 7 and Galaxy S7 design

note 7Up first is the design of the both the Note 7 and Galaxy S7. You can tell straight away the two are related. The same exquisite aluminium framework and sleek glass bodies compliments the sophisticated styling. All that remains as a discernible difference is the size. The Note 7 comes with a hand shattering 5.7” display in comparison the S7’s 5.1” screen.

The camera and flash positioning remains the same across the two models as does the curvature and bezel work along the phones framework. Essentially you can not tell the difference between the two unless you were to look at the base of the Note 7 and spot the slot for the stylus. This is of course unique to the Note range.

The S-pen (stylus) as they call it is useful component in the phablet’s arsenal. Using the screen one handed to type and scroll is simply a no go for those of us without shovel hands. The Note and S7 share the same water resistance with a standard rating of IP68. IP68 allows for the phone to sit in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. Of course this gives you enough leeway to show off by dropping your phone in a pint as you sip away whatever floats your boat really. The S-pen will also be waterproof for the first time. Oh and did we mention this year’s Note 7 will be introducing the Gorilla Glass 5? This is next generation of durable screen glass with the latest USB type C charging port also featuring. This is akin to a Goos3D favourite – the OnePlus.

Displays of the phones

Another first for the Note range is the dual edge screen, first featured on the S6 Edge. It’s a little bit gimmicky but it’s very aesthetically pleasing and generally speaking – it’s cool. Users will also enjoy a jump up to 577ppi Super AMOLED screen from 518ppi.

Performance and features

Diversity need not apply. The Note 7 shares many of the specifications seen in the Galaxy S7. The Note 7 will pack more RAM but the main change comes in the security department. We first had PIN numbers, then it was patterns followed by the cool fingerprint scanners. The Note 7 will go one further and employ retina scanning security technology. Yes, the phone will unlock with your eyes. This tech is apparently 100 times more secure than fingerprint scanners. If you wear glasses though, this feature won’t be a huge benefit as they must be removed.

Software of the flagships

note 7 s-penThe S-pen is the main leader of software changes. With the phones capable of achieving very similar tasks, the S-pen paves the way for numerous innovative ways of interacting with your phone. You can quickly translate things, create GIFs and combine the Always-on-display with the stylus to allow users to always take notes, even with the screen locked. Between the phone and the S-pen, the Note 7 can detect a massive 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity – which we can’t tell exactly why, but is extremely exciting.

Battery

Samsung follow their own trend from recent years with the Note 7 and increase the power 3000mAh to 3500mAh. While it’s a great increase the extra screen size, processing power and Edge functionality, the reality is the Galaxy S7 is more likely to outlive the Note 7. It’s a slight let down that the previously touted 4000 mAh didn’t happen. Still, the wireless adaptive fast-charging capabilities remain, which coupled with USB-Type C, provide a great charging experience (just accept you need to buy some new devices).

The verdict

From what we have seen so far, the Samsung Note 7 is a competent handset capable of holding up the worthy Note name. The RAM and S-pen are stand out features but many specs align to the traditionally lesser Galaxy range. With a possible Galaxy S8 announcement due in five months time, we’re on the fence as we expect most innovations to accompany the next Galaxy.

What will the Sky VR app bring to sports coverage?

0

In March, Sky announced their commitment to creating loads of virtual reality content through a dedicated Sky VR app. We take a look at what this means for sports fans.

Sky VR Studio

If you are going to take virtual reality content creation seriously, you’ll be needed a studio to back you up. The Sky VR Studio was a logical step toward becoming a leading. The studio is a fully dedicated in-house VR production unit, who have already dipped their toe into creating fantastic footage on-board with the Williams Martini Racing Team on Facebook.

Beyond Formula One, Sky have also been involved with the red carpet portion of Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiere, the Tour de France and Anthony Joshua fights.

The Sky VR app

The compliment this new suite of content, Sky have also developed the Sky VR app. The app will be available on Android and iOS is one of the most exciting apps Sky will be adding to their collection yet. Whether or not the app will be free or not remains to be seen, but it’s almost certainly to be free for Sky subscribers (with hopes the Irish market won’t be forgotten). We are waiting patiently for the launch of the Sky VR app, which is due this month (August).

Devices compatible with Sky VR

Gear VR compatible with SKY vr appWe’ve trialled plenty of VR headsets, with the HTC Vive being a clear leader. With that said, the Vive will need loads of space, loads of computer power and loads of money run. What doesn’t take quite as much is the Samsung Gear VR: once your already have a compatible phone of course. Thankfully, the Sky VR app or at least the service will be compatible with the Gear VR and Oculus Rift

Sky have also celebrated 25 years in existence and interviewed David Beckham in 360 on Facebook to celebrate. We’re just hoping that they nail some sort of VR content around the Premier League.

Crowdfunded: Renegade is a green 3D pen

0

Technology is allowing people to create mad yolks in the home – just remember the FormBox that we’ve talked about before. Creating 3D models in the home would have been pie in the sky stuff not to long ago but now the Renegade 3D pen is making it easier, cheaper and more environmentally friendly than ever.

The Renegade, while sounding like a baddie from Die Hard bares only a resemblance to the movie series as it’s as resourceful as John McClane (we’re looking at you Die Hard 4.0, with your crashing police cars into helicopters). The Renegade specialises in one thing, but it’s remarkable. It’s a 3D pen that prints models, but instead of using expensive filaments, this 3D pen uses recycled plastic bottles, paper, bags and a whole load of other materials you’d find lying around your home.

How does the Renegade 3D pen work?

crowdfunded 3d penThe Renegade is a cross between a hot glue gun and a 3D printer. The device pulls your recycled material through a screw feed which heats the material to a point where you can manipulate it. The only real limit here is the users imagination and of course how ever many bottles of Coke you can get through.

Renegade uses 5 to 7 mm strips cut from PET plastic bottles, plastic bags, or plastic files with a thickness of 0.14 to 0.35mm. It can also use standard PLA, ABS, nylon, TPE, HIPS, wood and other types of filament with a diameter of 1,75 mm. Did we mention it also comes in black or white? Saving the environment, creating awesomeness and all in the colour of your choice.

You may be wondering how you turn the plastic bottles into the required strips: you use a ChupaCut of course. The ChupaCut is a bottle shredder that produces perfect plastic strips for use in Renegade. The ChupaCut is one of those strangely satisfying things to watch operate too.

The ChupaCut will slice spherically to allow it to skim 3mm, 6mm, 9mm or 12mm without ever having to change a thing and unlike previously patented competitors, ChupaCut has curved slots that significantly reduce friction force and provide a very efficient rotation of the bottle, keeping it at an acute angle with the blade as it’s being cut. This also keeps the blade sharp for longer, and results in an easier, faster, and more stable cutting process.

The Renegade community

Not the next instalment of Mad Max but instead a great example of the spirit within the “maker-movement” community. There is an online area where users can print out templates upon which they can use the 3D pen, ranging form simple creations to quite complex ones.

The bigger picture

Currently there is approximately a trillion bags and bottles used around the globe annually. It takes 1000 years for plastic to degrade. It’s nice to see a product that is functional, innovative and effective. Two 2 litre bottles is enough to replace 25 standard filaments saving roughly €20 quid a pop. That’s incentive enough to make this a nice starting point in 3D printing.

The Renegade is on Kickstarter now.

Crowdfunded: Irish Kickstarter fails

0

You’ll regularly find us harping on about how amazing crowdfunding is and how many fantastic ideas are now realities thanks to this modern phenomenon. Well, believe it or not, we’ve never looked at the flip side of the coin – the Irish Kickstarter fails. It’s easy to enjoy the brilliant, but for one moment, let’s pause and appreciate the dreamers that just didn’t think their idea through.

Determining the worst Irish Kickstarter fails

Our methodology is simple. Kickstarter allows you to search campaigns by country, funding goal and actual funding achieved. We consider the fails to be sitting atop a list of campaigns with huge goals but very little interest. Using Kickstarter’s advanced search, we are able to find campaigns raising less than €1000 after targeting over €1 million: all from within Ireland of course. Without further ado we present to you the worst Irish Kickstarter fails.

Kickstart a Millionaire

kickstarter fails trying to get a blank chequeIf you’re going to kick off the list of Irish Kickstarter fails what better way to do it that a blatant attempt to get rich. Dublin’s Glenn O Carroll, who we can only imagine had just watched the Truman Show, had plans of the public simply giving him money. With this money, Glenn would strap up some GoPro cameras to himself and show the world what it’s like to be the “flavor of the month”.

Reading this got me a little excited as it’s genuinely a really interesting concept. Sure enough, Glenn was worried about “becoming a meme”, so much he declared this as one of the projects main risks. Alas, fears were put aside as he missed two key funding targets. First he fell short of €1 million and second he fell short of his honest prediction of even achieving €2. Glenn raised €1.

The Beloved

Since its inception Kickstarter has been involved in the creation of several movies with the likes of the Veronica Mars movie, receiving almost $6 million from just over 90,000 backers being a prime example of how to do it. The Beloved didn’t quite reach the same heights.

Set in an 1968 Welsh commune, The Beloved proved to be a steamy affair, aiming for £850,000 in crowdfunding, The Beloved achieved a grand total of £101 from two backers. This was all despite having £2.66 million already secured prior to the campaign starting.

Building Michael’s house from GTA 5

We don’t really know which of the two points we should start with on this one. We either start with how crazy it is, or the fact it’s crazy 10 people backed it, raising €33 of the overall €1.7 million funding target.

Irish Kickstarter fails gta house in louthWell we’ve pretty much covered how off the wall that second bit is just by mentioning it, so now onto the idea. Grand Theft Auto has seen many of us enjoy hours of waging horrendous violence on a virtual world. Many worry about that virtual world creeping into reality, but few would have predicted that emerge as a Kickstarter campaign. Well that’s just what happened as a man by the name of Paul Boyle thought it a good idea to get a rake of people together to fund the main character’s mafia gaff for a cool €1.7 million.

As we said, €33 was raised by 10 people but the proposed Carlingford site in Louth won’t be seeing the GTA mansion anytime soon.

Three Armed Decoy Tour

We could have featured them twice in this list of Irish Kickstarter Fails, but we won’t. First in March and again in May 2015, Three Armed Decoy attempted to raise €1.1 million to fund a world tour following years of support from dedicated fans in an effort to reach even more fans. Described as a “simple project” needing help from “normal people” the first campaign did achieve €30 from two backers. The follow up campaign didn’t raise anything.

We wouldn’t mind but we’ve heard worse.

FERDO.com – August 2015

Irish Kickstarter Fails - FERDOWe’re pretty sure this was a real campaign that didn’t lack some fairytale thinking. The campaign’s founder had the idea at the age of eight to design a site combining “social network, an on-line shop, an on-line arcade, an entertainment station and tones [sic] of applications”, summed up by the creator as holding the potential to “be one of the most beneficial and creative sites ever”. Backers were offered free access to downloads in the first year, but this was not to be a problem. With an initial target of €1.25 million, FERDO.com raised €1 from one backer – whom we imagine was the founder himself.

It was a lack of interest that scuppered FERDO.com despite the founder predicting the primary risks and challenges of the project to be the possibility “it will need to become popular before it becomes successful.” Unfortunately, owing to the fact FERDO.com  was practically Facebook, they missed their goal but did earn the title of “least successful Kickstarter campaign in Ireland”.

That’s the best of the best…or is it worst of the worst?
