Who will play who in the Making a Murderer Movie

0

If you haven’t already seen Making a Murderer you know you can try Netflix for free right? Netflix are bound to eventually make this into the most epic of all courtroom movies, but who’ll play who in the eventual Hollywood blockbuster that will be the Making a Murderer Movie?

Please note, from here on in there will be spoilers.

Steven Avery – Steve Pemberton

Making a Murderer Movie AveryStar of the show is twice convicted and once freed Steven Avery. The role, with no offense intended, won’t be too challenging as Avery is a relatively quiet man. Steve Pemberton of The League of Gentleman fame is a well travelled actor capable of comedic and very serious roles seen through his recent crime drama Happy Valley. The most challenging elements of the role are the Avery accent and the ability to go through years worth of facial hair changes to cover the full timeline of the Making a Murderer Movie.

Brendan Dassey –  Tyler Labine

Making a Murderer Movie DasseyOkay, so Tyler will have to lose the beard and play one of his first major serious roles that I can think of to land the Making a Murderer Movie. Something about Tyler just seems right to play the frustratingly dim, but completely harmless (it seems) Brendan Dassey. Shouldn’y cost too much either and to be honest, should be the easiest role ever. Most of his lines will simply be “yeah” or “I dunno”. Sorry Brendan.

Jerry Buting – Sam Waterson

Making a Murderer Movie BUTINGOne half of the incredible defence team that Avery had at his disposal during the case was Jerry Buting. Throughout the series, you see him deploy classic lawyer techniques including, but not limited to, the ask the “asking a question while walking away from the witness” manoeuvre. Buting needs an actor who knows what he’s doing to pull this off and so we’ve gone for a man who, while is a little older than Buting, has plenty of experience for the role owing to his position as Jack McCoy on the long running Law & Order.

Dean Strang – Steve Carell

Making a Murderer Movie STRANGCompleting the Making a Murderer Movie defence team is lawyer Dean Strang. Strang shows both empathy and intelligence throughout the case, opening up during apparently candid moments to discuss with incredible honesty how things are going with the film-makers. Such range will require a large lump of the acting budget to entice Steve Carell to join the team. Carell might be best known for his comedic roles including Anchorman but similar to Waterson, has shown serious acting abilities in the past, including an Oscar nomination for Foxcatcher.

Ken Kratz – Dan Akroid

Making a Murderer Movie KratzOh to have a man loved by many play a drug fuelled nymphomaniac lawyer hated by many. This is probably one of the more controversial picks, but we’re standing by this one being absolutely spot on. Kratz is an ever so slightly egotistical lawyer, seen through his post trial controversies, but will need someone a bit mad to play him in the Making a Murderer Movie. Alternatively, we would like to put forward this statue which became famous on Reddit for looking like the prosecution lawyer Kratz.

James Lenk – Mitch Pileggi

Making a Murderer Movie LenkFormer Manitowoc County Officer James Lenk was a centre figure in the eyes of the Defence during the trial of Steven Avery. Possibly a dirty cop heavily involved the planting of key evidence which put Steven Avery away for another life sentence. Given the edgy nature of the part and police officer role, X-Files star, Mitch Pileggi is simply ideal. Might be tough to free Pileggi up in the near future considering his involvement in the X-Files reboot that’s underway but surely a possible Making a Murderer Movie would tempt him.

Tom Fassbender – William Fichtner

Making a Murderer Movie FassbenderThis is just one of the most obvious one imaginable. Fassbender is one half of the investigation team now infamous for their line of questioning with Brendan Dassey. Fichtner is the perfect actor for the Making a Murderer Movie role as he always seems to slot into “on the edge of legal” cops as seen through his role as Alexander Mahone in Prison Break. He even has those mannerisms that Fassbender displays throughout Making a Murderer. This one for me is absolutely perfect.

Mark Wiegert – Wade Williams

Making a Murderer Movie WIEGERTNot as good a match, but who better to play the other half of the infamous investigation team than a man who played bogey prison guard Brad Bellick in Prison Break. He’s bound to have some chemistry with Fichtner and doesn’t look a million miles away from Wiegert himself. The more we look at Williams, the more we think he suits the Making a Murderer Movie role.

Mike Halbach – Ryan Reynolds

Making a Murderer Movie HalbachThis one we’re leaving late as it could piss off a few, but for us this one came in a vision. While Mike Halbach is a victim, considering the loss of his sister is at the centre of the case, there’s actually quite a few people online who are growing annoyed with him. I’m also in this group. Something about how he carries on throughout Making a Murderer makes him appear sneaky, but anyway. Ryan Reynolds just seems like he’ll be able to handle the “trying to charm the masses” approach during press conferences. We’ll retreat to some sort of makeshift bunker now so protect ourselves.

Len Kachinsky – William H Macy

Making a Murderer Movie KachinskyWe just had to include this one as Macy is brilliantly suited to playing the undesirable role of Dassey’s early lawyer Kachinsky. Just look at him! A twenty minute session to get the dodgy looking Kachinsky hair sorted out and he’s a doppelgänger.

It’s tough to see actors we love playing characters we hate, but this one is too good to overlook.

Did we get one wrong? Think we missed out on a great role in the Making a Murderer Movie that needs filling? Let us know.

Craft Phones: Small brand phones making big leaps

0

The new hipster era has heralded the dawn of the craft beer and we here at Goos3D can’t complain. We’re quite partial to an auld I.P.A, ice cold Hoegaarden or Galway Hooker, some lesser known brands allowing their creative juices to flow while the larger industry does what it does best. Believe it or not, the same is actually happening in the smartphone world.

While Samsung, Sony and Apple release perpetual annual handsets with slight modifications, the new wave of geniuses hoping to become the next Steve Jobs are creating products that really put some of the better known brands to shame. Here’s a look at a couple of our favourite craft phones that you are sure not to find in any network or high street store.

Craft Phones: Fairphone 2

You might already be familiar with Google’s Project Ara which has roots in Kickstarter Phonebloks. This was to be the first modular smartphone on the market. It hasn’t worked our as such as the project is still at the incubation stage. Enter the heroic Dutch as company Fairphone are out to take over.

fairphone_designFairphone is a slightly different kind of smartphone manufacturer. It’s not out to make the prettiest or the most powerful handsets, but the most ethically responsible. They launched its first rendition in 2013, built solely with materials that could be traced back to conflict free mines and carrying a commitment to reducing the worlds e-waste. Year one sales topped out at 60,000 units, owing largely to pre-orders, providing much needed capital to further develop their agenda with the Fairphone 2.

The Fairphone is built in the same manner as the original, using material which is ethically sources and in created in an incredibly transparent manner (they break down exactly what your paying for) and it is modular, MODULAR!  The expected lifespan of the phone is  5 whopping years. We’d like to see any other handset on the market achieve that. That’s Nokia-esque.

They also intend to keep the same model availbale for at least two years, so as not to be pushing for an upgrade in half that time while remaining responsibility produced and goes against the endless upgrade cycle we have become accustomed too.

They won’t achieve their goals if the specs are not up to lasting the distance. Sporting a  5-inch, 1080p HD screen, a Snapdragon 801 with 2GB RAM, most will admit the Fairphone 2 is not bad at all. The camera is a bit of a let-down at a meagre 8MP, but here’s the beauty of it all. If 8MP doesn’t cut it for you, buy another and fit it yourself. The same goes for the screen and the battery.

Fairphone 2 GIFSimple, thanks to some well thought and clever engineering. The phones body works as a case and can be pulled free of the device itself, revealing the goodies inside; somewhat like a kinder egg minus the chocolate. No tools are required undo a couple of clips and any component can be swapped out in seconds, in fact the phone itself can be completely disassembled and the reassembled in under 5 minutes. Meaning the handset is upgradeable and repairable two of which are rarities in today’s mobile industry, in fact the operating system can be modified, coming with Android 5.1 installed with a skin over the top to make it more simple and appealing to the less tech familiar , but they offer a standard Android ROM while they are also in talks with Mozilla, Jolla & Ubuntu so every possible user is catered for.

The Fairphone 2 has an adequate 32GB of storage, a MicroSD card slot, dual-SIM support, and connects to 4G LTE networks. Unless you’re a real spec snob, there’s little to get upset about here. The device is compelling enough to make this a realistic prospect for more people than the original enticed, and will appeal to the geeky thanks to the cool modular design.

Yes, the OnePlus 2 costs less than that and has a stronger specification, but it doesn’t boast the eco-credentials. Also, don’t underestimate the cool-party-trick factor of stripping down your phone without any special tools, then putting it back together again in just a few moments. Try doing that with any other phone and have it still work afterwards.

You can pick up the Fairphone 2 on their website for €525.

Craft Phones: Kyocera DuraWX

ScreenHunter_03_Sep._27_12.26If you are planning on driving along treacherous roads and making unnecessary journeys you’ll need a pretty tough phone. The Kyocera DuraXV is a rugged waterproof and basically bombproof clamshell. If you’re in the market for a high spec smart phone your looking in the wrong place because the DuraXVis al about the basics.

This phone is built for the extreme, thanks to its reinforced housing- Military Standard 810G rating which is essentially means the phone is able to withstand anything from drops to extreme temperatures, including an IPX68 waterproof rating which means 30 minutes in upto 6 feet of water, if that’s what your into and all that.

Design Features include tactile keypad for simple use even if the use is wearing gloves, the phone also uses a high contrast, Black and white external display and internal colour display, for improved readability in any condition, tough phone but easy to use.

They have also made massive strides with Smart Sonic Receiver Technology that will transmit sound as vibrations direct to the eardrum, essentially by passing background noise allowing much greater call clarity. Side features include Mobile Web, GPS, built in flashlight and Voice command.

You can check out more about the DuraXV on their website.

Craft Phones: Marshall London Phone

This one is hard to figure out as the specs to be honest are utter shite, but it looks so god damn good.

marshall-london-phone-6_3800.0It’s rare we see a completely out of context company take a stab at creating a handset, but guitar amplifier specialists Marshall did in creating the London. It’s stunning to look at, with a textured rubber feel and white line surrounding the screen which will resonate with anyone who has spotted their iconic amps at a concert. Further detail includes a lovely brass scroll wheel doubles as the volume key while at the top there is not one but two auxiliary ports so you can share your music while not disturbing anyone around you (are you listening everyone on Dublin bus) while between the two ports is the dedicated music player button.

Ok its sexy, but the specs are a little disappointing so I will make this quick, 720p 4.7” display which is low even by mid range standards. Using a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 running at 1.2Ghz  the same stuff found in the Moto G which is €200 ish and the Marshall will set you back just over twice that which is a lot of cash for something that’s not high spec or unibody which is so hot right now. Really the only spec that gives any credibility is the battery  a 2500 mAh. I guess That’s the benefit of it having a small chip, small screen, and ordinary resolution.  The camera is only an 8mp that uses the standard Google camera app which is not great. Its just a shame because this costs about as much as an iPhone 5s, so thank god for the music features on the London they save the day.

marhasllBasically its hard to suggest the London to real smartphone fans, the screen, the processor and the camera are just bland and truly uninspiring. If I consider the Marshall London as a cool music player with a bonus phone function, rather than an average smartphone with a flashy music app, it makes a lot more sense. I’m also happy it exists at all, because it looks so fantastic. However, if you want to buy a mid-range smartphone, don’t buy the London, because there are much better models for much less money. However, if you want a great sounding mobile device with a cracking design, and don’t mind spending out, then you’ll probably love it.

Craft Phones: Xiaomi – Mi 4i

51201553211PM_635_xiaomi_mi_4iXiaomi is another privately owned company from the Asian market with the remit of knocking Samsung of their perch.  They develop, design and sell android based OS smartphones as well as other consumer electronics such as fitness trackers, TVs, air purifiers & tablets etc. They even build their own skin for its phones called MIUI, and sell most of their phones through flash sales in India. The Mi4i is only Rs 9,999 or €140 to you and me before delivery and for the specs that this delivers it’s pennies.

For a flagship phone a 1080p display is the minimum requirement and the Mi 4i delivers with a premium 5 inch full HD 1080p display, with NTCS 95% colour gamut. To put in perspective the iPhone 6s has an NTSC rating of 72%, which means vivid contrasts and colours that are enhanced with the full lamination technology. The Mi 4i also includes a Sunlight display, a real time pixel modifier for improved readability in all light conditions. All this is wrapped up in the super tough Corning Core glass.

No point having this high performance screen without the battery to run it, and the Mi 4i does this by fitting in the highest capacity battery possible while remaining a slim profile,  meaning a 3120mAh 4.4V 700Wh/l lithium-ion polymer cell,  a similar battery to the Sony flagship range who are renowned for their high performance batteries. Then something amazing happened, to get the most from the battery the Mi 4i was redesigned to include a double sided circuit board which results in a frame that’s only 7.8mm, not bad for a handset with all that power within.   Add a 13MP camera with a 5MP front facing camera, a 64-bit performance system and a 2nd generation Snapdragon 615 along with quadcore 1.7GHz processor. But it doesn’t stop there the Mi 4i is paired with a Adreno 405GPU and support for OpenGl ES 3.0 which is the latest standard in 3D gaming this phone can run anything one throws at it.

The Mi 4i also looks the part is finely textured and matte –sprayed for resistance and grip. The back cover fits just right and bends seamlessly across the sides to meet the front display, simple and elegant. Available also in white, blue and pink , a serious piece of kit or under €150, available from their website.

Making a Murderer: Anonymous Account a Fake

0

Following a spate of articles from reputable sources such as The Next Web and a supporting Twitter account, many believed that infamous hacktivist group Anonymous were hot on the heals of the men the internet believes framed Steven Avery. It would appear that the internet’s excitement and desire to have more information on the Making a Murderer case has lead everyone up the garden path.

Note, that from here on in there will be spoilers for Netflix series Making a Murderer.

Making a Murderer is a worldwide phenomenon, which we recently predicted to be the talk of the town. The docu-series surrounds the court case of Steven Avery, an American man who served 17 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, and then two years later accused of murdering a young female photographer.

Officers in Making a MurdererTwitter has lit up in recent days with armchair lawyers, armed only with Wikipedia, researching every element of the case which has been presented in this Netflix Original to suggest Avery has been set up by police. The series concludes with Avery being sentenced to life in prison, which has left the internet furious. Much to the public’s delight, infamous hacktivists Anonymous appeared to emerge as knights in shining armour creating a Twitter account and promising to divulge incriminating evidence depicting the untoward actions of the police (left) involved in the Avery case. Sure enough their self-imposed deadline came and went with nothing released, as the Twitter account began to make strange changes leading to it looking fake.

Further to support that this account is the tweet from 0hour1, an account with known connections to Anonymous according to this Reddit feed.

While I love Netflix and Twitter, it’s really a sign of the times that we crave knowledge now. There is no waiting for the next episode as everyone online appears to be following the “binge on Making a Murderer” followed by anger followed by rampant Google searches for more information. This naturally led to loads of news sources running with false information, showing the perils of modern day news sources.

So there you have it, you might be craving more and more, but be wary of online sources.

Tech Predictions for 2016

0

Throughout 2015 we’ve already looked at the Google search trends and what was big at this year’s Web Summit, but what about the tech predictions for 2016? We’re taking a punt so join us for the Goos3D tech predictions for 2016.

Virtual reality

Murder She Wrote gifThe reach of virtual reality seems limitless as it provides an immersive gaming experience, flexible news medium and adoption on a budget for those seeking to dip their toe in the water. The latter, owing largely to Google Cardboard, means anyone with a smartphone can try virtual reality for around €25, unless you find one of the many companies that are giving these out for free. For 2016 I would expect to see even better apps and improved on-board sensors within handsets which improve responsiveness during virtual reality use.

With YouTube’s recent support for 360 degree video, there will be an increase in 360 video capture, so you can expect to see practical uses for virtual reality emerge such as selling homes from a far, customised car sale and of course gaming.

Google alternatives will grow in popularity

DuckDuckGoFor many, Google is the first port of call for the day to day queries that pop up but there are a few alternatives emerging from the shadows. With Microsoft pulling of a master-stroke in providing free upgrades for loads of users meaning loads of users found their new and improved Edge browser, formerly Internet Explorer. Edge is certainly an improvement on Internet Explorer and may play a part in the ever-increasing growth in Bing searches. While it’s unlikely to replace Google any time soon, Bing is second in line to the search behemoth.

A real challenge could also be formed at the hands of newcomer DuckDuckGo, who though active since 2008 have reached new levels of usage since a 2014 redesign. The relatively fledging search engine is now included in iOS as an option and is experiencing rapid growth, owing largely to the companies privacy policies.

Broadband might actually get fast down the country

Vodafone have been testing super fast broadband in parts of Ireland for the past few months and when I say fast I mean bloody fast. Teaming up with the ESB, Vodafone’s super fast broadband is routed to the in what is known as Fibre to the Building (FTTB) broadband, providing in excess of 1000 Mbps. Phase one which is currently under way will eventually reach 500,000 homes in selected areas around Ireland and could revolutionise how the country views its network infrastructure.

Technology will remain completely unpredictable

Did you ever think you would use your phone to sort your laundry or be able to see just how many parking spaces were in your usual carpark? Technology keeps evolving in both ways we could never have imagined and in ways that are a little more expected. Either way, we’re excited to see if our tech predictions for 2016 come true or not.

What’s on Netflix: Making a Murderer

0

Once upon a time, Netflix provided us with a selection of well known TV shows and movies, however in recent times the online streaming service have began churning out top quality original programmes. One of the latest such programmes is Making a Murderer, and boy is it amazing.

Steven Avery NetflixMaking a Murderer surrounds the true story and court case of Steven Avery, a seemingly simple man from a humble Wisconsin background. Without giving too much away, Avery was convicted of rape in 1985 and sent to prison. 18 years later, developments in technology saw Avery exonerated of the crimes win back his freedom in 2003. In 2005, he was arrested again, this time for the murder of 25 year old photographer Teresa Halbach. Making a Murderer begins just as Avery is awarded damages from his initial wrongful conviction which allows him to hire lawyers and form a defence.

It’s been a long time since I deliberately stayed up till the wee hours because I was simply engrossed in a TV show, but Making a Murderer is a fantastic piece of film making that will leave you hanging on for every episode. As you enjoy the drama, you will experience the inner turmoil while sympathising with an increasingly apparent piece of shoddy police work which is having a devastating effect on a man’s life for a second time.

Without giving anything away, Making a Murderer manages to tell the entire story without a narrator leading you, instead showing only video footage while relying on recorded phone calls to fill in the gaps. Once you’ve gotten through the ten episodes you’ll do what I did and begin Googling to see what the film makers didn’t include and try to come to your own conclusions. The real test comes as you try not to Google anything until you watch the lot.

If you found yourself gripped by the Serial Podcast or feeling confused as you supported Dexter and his vigilante ways, Making a Murderer is the show for you and is must watch water cooler talk in work. You’ll likely scream and the TV on several occasions but will certainly be gripped by the story. The age of armchair lawyering is here.

Making a Murderer is available now on Netflix.

Keep Appy on Christmas Day

0

Once you’ve stuff yourself with turkey and worn silly paper hats, you’ll probably be looking to pass and hour or so before that movie comes on and the box of Roses gets opened. This hour used to be passed with boardgames or parlour games that would descend into chaos well before a winner would be found. Move aside old school as nowadays you’re more likely to play smartphone based games or challenges. We’ve taken a look at the best apps and games to get you through Christmas Day.

My Lovely App iOSAndroid

My Lovely AppFather Ted has strangely become a Christmas tradition with the Christmas special gracing our TV stations every year. We all have that one friend that think’s they know everything about Father Ted and now you can really test them with My Lovely App. The gauntlet is set with a ten question challenge and some answers will come to a little easier than others. Still, My Lovely App is sure to bring a bit of craic to your living room.

Charades! – iOSAndroid

Charades! is a modern take on the classic game of the same name. Choose a category and hold the phone against your head as your friends and family try to act out what’s on the screen for you to guess. If you get it right, you tilt the phone down and if you need to pass, tilt it up. The game then moves onto the next item to be guessed. Charades! is simple but great fun and offers in-app purchases if you outgrow the free categories.

Netflix – iOSAndroidWindows

This one is a no-brainer. While Christmas TV is decent and Eastenders is sure to be a cliffhanger, Netflix has a fantastic repository of shows and movies to get your through the evening. The Muppets Christmas Carol has been added on Christmas Day while shows like Making a Murderer provide you with an incredible story to enjoy an alternative Christmas Evening.

If you want to make your home even cosier, Netflix have even launched an hour-long 4K fireplace.

App Store – iOS (pre-installed)

That family member you didn’t expect arrived or the cousins landed over unexpectedly, but you need a gift quick and obviously everything is closed. If they have an iPad or an iPhone you can gift them premium apps from the iOS store once you have an account yourself. Unfortunately, the Google Play Store does not provide a similar service in Ireland as of yet, but just look how thinking outside the box can help you out of a sticky situation.

Skype – iOSAndroid

Australia has them now, but the lost children of Ireland are much easier to contact nowadays. When we say communicate, we really mean the new Christmas tradition of “Can you hear me, I can see you but I can’t hear…feck it you’re gone altogether now”. No Christmas is complete without a ropey Skype call to someone away from home.

Elf Yourself – iOS Android

6a00d8341cd0b753ef0105367fc1b1970bThere is something about god awful tackiness around Christmas that everyone just loves. Better still is god awful tackiness that rips the piss out of someone. Elf Yourself is a simple idea that allows you to place the photos of some friends and family into a short video of Elfs dancing. Of course you can then share this on social media and embarrass the life of someone. The free version of the app is fine but there are in app purchases available for more scenes.

We’re sure there are plenty of apps out there we’ve missed and one’s you think are more important, so let us know below! Either way we hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Read this before you shop in CeX

0

We all have some sort of electronics knocking around the home gathering dust, so every now and then you might be tempted to swing into CeX – the Computer Exchange, but are CeX good value? A recent trip to a Dublin CeX store prompted me to dig a little deeper.

The Computer Exchange (CeX)

CeX is a UK based company, founded in 1992 and eventually coming to Ireland in April 2011. CeX  provides a service where customers can visit store to exchange electronic devices for cash or store credit These items are then assessed and resold by CeX. The model has proven extremely popular, with the first Irish store achieving €1.3 million in sales in the first year and a further 24 branches opening since nationwide. Sounds like everyone wins right?

CeX Trust Pilot

The general perception around CeX is that it provides very good value. Consumer reviews website Trust Pilot states the retail exchange specialists have earned an 8 out of 10 star rating, supplied by customers of the store. A quick read through the comments left by customers does indeed suggest the vast majority of shoppers enjoy a good experience with CeX. One question remains however. Is CeX good value?

Is CeX good value

What sparked our digging was a recent trip to a North-Dublin CeX store. Remarkably, we spotted a second-hand first generation Google Chromecast on sale for €35. Chromecast has risen in popularity recently, particularly for gifting and it retails for €39 brand new. CeX offers an older Google Chromecast for €35 and the latest Google Chromecast for €42. Needless to say, this spot peaked my interest, so I delved a little deeper.

Is CeX good value? – Apple Watch with strap

Apple Store Online – €449

CeX – €375

CeX Apple WatchOne of the most sought after pieces of jewellery doubles up as a piece of tech. The Apple Watch can already be found in CeX cabinets from the average user who gets tired of wearables after a few months. If you were to shop on the official Apple website now, you would pick up an Apple Watch for €449.

CeX offer the same Apple Watch for €340. This is literally just the watch, with the strap setting you back another €35. So, if you’re looking to pick up an Apple Watch  Series 2, you’ll save yourself €75 versus buying directly from Apple. On the flip side, if you’re trading one in, CeX will offer you €210 for it. They’ll then resell it, making a nice little profit of €130.

Is CeX good value? – Xbox One 500GB and Halo 5

GameStop – €349.99

CeX – €360.00

CeX Xbox 360 unboxedGameStop prove to be cheaper with the Halo 5 and Xbox One 500GB console brand new for about a tenner less than CeX. What’s worse is that the Xbox you buy second hand from CeX doesn’t even come in a box. For the privilege of a cardboard box you’ll pay €335 for the same 500GB console.

Is CeX good value? – Kindle Touch

Argos – €69

CeX – €75

We’ll admit right off the bat that this is a special offer in Argos that will get you a new Kindle for €6 less than a second-hand one in CeX,  but they are still flogging these second hand items for a 45% markup.

Is CeX good value? – GTA V (pre-owned) – Xbox 360

GameStop – €29.99

CeX – €18.00

We had to dig pretty deep, but second hand gaming seems reasonable in CeX. You can pick up old Xbox 360 games at a fraction of the cost GameStop will charge you. Both are pre-owned here and note you can pick this up new in Argos for just over €30.

Is CeX good value? – Smartphones

Apple iPhone 5S – Sim free

Apple Store Online – €519

CeX – €430

Vodafone Smart Ultra

Vodafone – €169.99

CeX – €140.00

Generally speaking you are saving when purchasing handsets, though remember they are second hand. What’s surprising with handsets is the trade in value. Apple gear retains value very well, hence the two year old 5S’s price on the Apple site. With that in mind, CeX will give you €184 cash or €258 store credit for you iPhone 5s. That’s a profit margin of 57% and 40% respectively.

The verdict

CeX appears to be a mine field of sorts, scattered with some good deals and some awful traps to make huge money. While second hand phones may be good value, there are a large number of items you would be better off shopping elsewhere for either to save money, or get an brand new item for a small sum more.

One important thing to note in the CeX terms and conditions is that should an item become faulty, you are unlikely to receive a full refund with store credit being a preferred peace maker.

Have you shopped with CeX? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Capture moments like it’s 1985 – VHS Camcorder

0

Brilliantly low quality video and cheesy throwbacks ahead as we test out Rarevision’s VHS Camcorder app on iOS.

It’s funny that in a world where innovation is key, every now and then a few steps backwards is thoroughly enjoyable. Retro gaming has proven popular with successful Kickstarters such as Mini EMU and Starforce PI. However, if you really want to dive into nostalgia, what’s better than capturing magical family moments in a You’ve Been Framed handheld camera style? In a world that’s become obsessed with capturing the highest quality using the smallest devices, the team at Rarevision have developed an app to capture low quality VHS style moments.

Retro VHS Camcorder GIFVHS Camcorder does what it is designed to do amazingly well. The final video is extremely convincing with grainy tracking effects at the bottom of the video, low colour quality and poor audio quality capture too. I admit, it’s funny writing this description as an example of how well the app works. The detail they have gone into while creating the VHS Camcorder app is second to none as even the slow zoom in and out controls mimic those of a 1985 handheld camera. Nostalgia reigns supreme with additional features including the ability to select today’s date or a custom date along with centred titles for your videos being an option.

We took to the streets of Dublin to capture some retro footage to demonstrate how convincing the app is. The full video of the semi-naked escape artist is available on our YouTube channel, while below we sent Funky Ska Rock band The FitzaFrenic back in time.

You can download Rarevision’s VHS Camcorder now for €3.99 from the App Store and start capturing retro moments.

There is currently no Android version and similar apps on Android at the moment don’t create the same effect to anywhere near the quality that Rarevision have achieved. Follow our social feeds for updates on an Android app if it arrives.

Google – Awaken the Force Within

0

Indeed, the world has gone Star Wars mad to the point where everyone needs a Chrome extension to block movie spoilers. Google are involved in one of the coolest features to emerge from the blockbuster movie release that is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as they have created an interactive mini game called Awaken the Force Within.

Google are known for creating brilliant interactive experiences on an unnecessarily shoestring budget considering the epic size of the company. In the past, Google challenged convention though the creation of Google Cardboard, an uber-affordable alternative to Oculus.  Given the wave of Star Wars madness that’s rushing across the planet, it’s no surprise that Google are at it again by bringing users an interactive experience with devices you’re likely to already have.

Google Awaken the Force WithinGoogle – Awaken the Force Within utilises your Android smart phone and laptop without requiring a download on either. Once you navigate to the Awaken the Force Within website on your laptop, you must choose which side you want to fight on with your Google apps following your decision. Next you’ll be presented with a link to visit on your Android device. When discovering this, I started to get excited at the thought of where this might be going and it didn’t disappoint.

The next prompt asks you hold your handset like a lightsaber and calibrate it to your laptop. From there on your phone is your lightsaber as you battle your way through Stormtroopers, blocking and reversing their lazer fire and engaging in weapon to weapon combat as well. All of the lightsaber movements below are as a result of moving my smartphone. Sure there is a bit of lag and it’s not perfect, but the concept is brilliant and so simple to get up and running with. So enough of the reading, go on and give it a go!

Kids are getting devices from a younger age with every passing year which yields great benefits as they learn skills that will last them a lifetime. With these benefits comes inherent dangers of the online world. New Irish Kickstarter campaign iKydz is a must have device for all parents with children accessing the internet in the home.

iKydz Box ModemThe modern home is likely to have internet access in every single room, meaning it’s difficult to know if your child has really gone to sleep or is lying in bed browsing the internet. New Irish Kickstarter, iKydz, is an amazing simple solution to controlling your child’s access to the internet without being overly intrusive. iKydz is a two part concept comprising of a “black box” which very simply plugs into your modem and an app which you download to your either your Android or Apple device.

iKydz AppYour smartphone then becomes the home’s internet control centre which can allow and deny internet access to individual devices. Access can be controlled either manually or on a schedule and is not limited to just tablets and phones. Laptops and games consoles are also included, meaning you can limit online gaming to the weekend or ensure only Microsoft Word is being used on the laptop for that assignment that’s due.

iKydz is a practical tool that all parents will surely appreciate. You can set bedtime settings based on different children, meaning their internet access is regulated at different times including different times on the weekend. Special mealtime settings ensure you won’t be looking at that strange glow generated by a smart device’s screen on your child’s face during dinner. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you can block certain content which you deem unsuitable for your child, whether it be they to young for social media sites or stemming their interest in adult and gambling sites.

While we do not want to reduce the importance of maintaining an important and open dialog with your child regarding their internet usage, iKydz is a priceless tool to ensure your child enjoys a safe online experience without feeling their parents are invading their privacy.

We can’t imagine a home being without these devices in the future and you can now back iKydz on Kickstarter. The device starts at €79 for early adopters who will receive the device in June 2016.
