Instagram for Desktop: This 1 quick hack lets you post to Instagram on desktop

0

I’ll admit, I have a better understanding of why people love Instagram these days. Since starting my Motivating Marty efforts, I’ve realised that different social media sites suit different types of posts. What I don’t understand, is why I couldn’t post to Instagram on desktop, until now. Today, Instagram launched a new mobile site which actually benefits desktop users more than anyone.

Instagram launches a mobile site

The big launch today was an Instagram mobile site. Considering Instagram has risen to power as an app, a mobile site was never really a priority. It’s still a strange move as the app is the most efficient way to most people to enjoy Instagram, but there are some incompatible smartphones and tablets. While these users will benefit from the new mobile site, it’s left the door open for one feature Instagrammers have been crying out for.

How to post to Instagram on desktop

To be crystal clear, Instagram hasn’t suddenly opened up the flood gates for you to post from desktop. There is, however, a fairly tidy hack that will let you access the mobile site to achieve the same goal.

Step one: Head on over to Instagram

On your desktop, or much more likely your laptop, head on over to the Instagram website and log in to your account. This site has always been here, letting you like and comment on existing posts.

Step two: Open developer tools

For this part, I’m assuming you’re using Google Chrome. In Chrome, on the Instagram website, you’ll need to launch developer tools. To launch developer tools, press CTRL+Shift+I (Cmd + Shift + C on Mac) together.

Step three: Access mobile options

post to instagram on desktop with developer toolsDeveloper tools has a great feature which lets you view any website as if it were on a smartphone. Don’t let all the code and stuff put you off. You’re just looking for the conveniently circled mobile devices option above.

Step 4: Turn your browser into an iPhone

making your browser look like mobile

Next, at the top of the screen (where that lovely red rectangle is) you’ll likely see the word responsive. Click this and change it to one of the smartphone options, such as the iPhone 6.

Step 5: Now, you can post to Instagram on desktop

That’s it. You should now be greeted with a screen in your browser exactly like you would using the Instagram app.

What can’t you do with this hack?

We put together a video to promote this article on Instagram and then discovered you can’t post videos using this method. You all lose access to the glorious filters of Instagram, but still, it should save you some time for general posting.

Don’t be afraid to give that a lash. It’s even easier that it seems to now post to Instagram on desktop. If you have any questions about doing this in a different browser, drop us a comment below or a message on Facebook.

Get Snapchat Spectacles in Ireland and official Irish release date updates

Snapchat Spectacles are real. These cool wearables are from Snapchat’s parent company, Snap Inc. Here’s everything you need to know.

What’s Snap Inc.?

Snap Inc is the newly formed parent company of popular app Snapchat. The founders of Snapchat decided they had more to offer the photography space and needed a new company format to develop.

snap-inc-homepage

What are Snapchat Spectacles?

Snapchat Spectacles are a simple, but mental, idea. You take a pair of mad looking sunglasses and whack two cameras onto the sides. Slip some battery power into the frames, connect it to Snapchat and watch the money roll in.

In the past, some have worried about the privacy of such things. Google Glass falling flat on its face because it had privacy issues and was extremely uncool. The funky looking Snapchat Spectacles will appeal to the masses, coming in teal, black and coral. When you’re “Snapping”, lights pop on around the camera to tell others what you’re at – giving some sort of privacy.

How do Spectacles work?

When wearing the Spectacles, just tap the side of the frames and then a ten-second video clip is recorded and sent to your Snapchat story. The dual-lenses capture video through an 115-degree field of view, much closer to actual eyesight. As a result, your memories look much more authentic than those captured with a smartphone camera.

how are snapchat spectacles charged

Snapchat Spectacles come with a case which does more than just protect. The case doubles as the way of charging the Spectacles.

How much do Snapchat Spectacles cost?

Snapchat’s sunglasses won’t be too insanely priced given the relative cost of some traditional pairs on the market. You can expect to pay between €120 and €150 to get your hands on what is likely to be the hot accessory of Summer 2017. To get your hands on them this side of the Atlantic right now will mean you’re paying a premium though.

When are they launching in Ireland?

We’ve been in touch with Snap Inc and were informed there is no plan to release outside the US just yet. They didn’t deter us from picking a pair up in New York though, you know when we’re just casually popping by like.

You can, however, get Snapchat Spectacles on Amazon.co.uk right now and get them delivered to Ireland via Parcel Motel.

The Snapchat Spectacles had a really cool rollout in the states. Pop-up vending machines were the only place you could get them. They are now available in New York from a dedicated store. We asked Snap Inc when we could expect to see them over this side of the pond, but unfortunately, they had nothing for us. It’ll be this year and surely before the summer. We’ll be updating this page and announcing on Facebook as soon as we know more.

What’s on Netflix Ireland in May

Sorry, I know we’re late – soz. If you can forgive us we’d like to motor on with bringing you the very best of what Netflix Ireland has on offer this May. Note: we do not condone you staying in out of the sun, your mother would be furious.

Master of None

Personally, I think Aziz Ansari, but he’s one of the more polarising comedians out there right now. Best known for his role in Parks and Recreation, Aziz has been killing it off-screen with his standup act. He returned to the screen by starring in, writing and directing Master of None. The show is a new Netflix original comedy series loosely based on his own life. The first season was great craic, following the life of Dev. Dev is a 30-year-old actor in New York who has trouble deciding what he wants to eat, much less the pathway for the rest of his life.

Master of None returns for what I can only imagine will be a hilarious second season on Netflix from 12 May.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

I’ve been pretty open about Kimmy Schmidt being a guilty pleasure of mine for some time. The whacky story of a girl being kidnapped by a cult leader acclimatising to life in the real world is more than a bit mad. Kimmy is back for a third season and frankly, I’m just excited to hear the show’s amazing theme song again:

Kimmy’s back on Netflix from 19 May.

The Keepers

What is it with Netflix and cracking murder mystery type documentaries? The Keepers is a riveting seven-part documentary series about the unsolved murder of a Baltimore nun, Sister Cathy Cesnik. Five decades later, her murder is surrounded by horrific secrets and pain but remains unsolved. The case returned to the spotlight in the 90s when one of Sister Cathy’s former students came forward to share her experience of horrendous sexual abuse by the high school’s chaplain. Still, nothing was done which led to the making of The Keepers.

The Keepers echoes a lot of the horrible tales the Irish have heard over the years. From clergy abuse to and from repressed memories to government and religious institutions that the director says “at best, dropped the ball over the last 45 years – and, at worst, covered it up.”

The Keepers is available on Netflix from 19 May.

Inglorious Basterds War Machine

Okay, so one look at the trailer and you’ll be sure they somehow froze Lieutenant Aldo “The Apache” Raine from Inglorious Basterds. Alas, there’s no connection, it’s just laziness from Brad Pitt. With that said, I loved that character, so he’s allowed recycle him. Beyond Pitt, there’s a serious cast of talent in War Machine, or at least loads of faces you’ll kind of recognise. All of them are involved in the post-war cleanup of Afghanistan.

Netflix are clearly ramping up their attempts to replace Hollywood with this being one of their biggest investments yet.

Join the war effort on 26 May.

And that’s all there is for May…oh wait a second…

House of Cards

If you thought US politics was a shit show right now, well, you’re right. House of Cards is probably going to struggle to keep up with the madness. Frank Underwood has plotted his way to the top. Now he claims the American people don’t know what’s good for them, but he does. One nation, Underwood.

The battle for the presidency returns to Netflix on 30 May.

That Netflix membership is looking more and more worth it with every passing month.

Tile Review: A smart little key finder gadget

0

When I was younger, I remember my uncle giving me a key finder. I didn’t have any keys of course, but I was blown away by that little gadget. Actually, it’s possibly what started my love for gadgets in general. You’d pop the little black fob onto your keys and when you whistled, it would beep. Super simple, but an effective way of finding your keys down the back of the couch. That’s why I was fairly excited to see Tile, a modern take on the key finder.

What is Tile?

Like that gadget from my youth, Tile is a small fob you pop onto your keys. Instead of whistling, Tile is connected to your smartphone. If you’ve ever lost your keys, there’s always one smartarse who asks ‘have you tried calling them’. Tile basically lets you call your keys through their dedicated app. The fob which is connected to your keys will beep, sounding something like an old-school Nokia phone. If you’ve lost your keys when out and about, all is not lost – pardon the pun.

The Tile app is constantly checking in on the fob, so the app can always tell you where you were the last time your keys were connected. Combine this with the respectable range the key finder fob has and retracing your steps with your smartphone will most likely prove fruitful.

What makes this a really smart key finder gadget?

The best gadgets always have a think about what else they can do. Tile also has a button on the key finder fob. Double tap this and your phone will ring. Isn’t that just smart? Even so, that’s still not the smartest bit. Every single person with the Tile app can help you find your lost items. Every phone with the app is anonymously capable of recognising other Tiles and then letting you know someone just passed by your stuff. Genius!

Living with Tile

I’ve been using Tile for well over a month and it’s a strange little gadget to review. To review it, I would have had to lost my keys, which I never do. However, there were two occasions where Tile came into its own as a key finder.

Tile is great when you leave your keys in work

Have you ever left your keys in work? Well, I have managed that a few times. I don’t classify this as losing your keys because you’re fairly sure you know where they are. Sure enough, I left my keys on my desk but thanks to Tile I could confirm it. Sitting at home, I loaded up the app and it was able to tell me I was last within range of my keys at the office.

Tile is class when you leave your keys in the car

Ok, so I’ll admit this is a fairly first-world problem. My car parking spot isn’t far away or anything, but it’s just effort to go to the car. After doing the shopping with my better half, I couldn’t find my keys in the apartment. A moment after loading the Tile app, I saw the keys were last connected to my phone at my parking spot. There’s a good reason why this is awesome. Most times, finding your keys involves a prayer to St. Anthony and a bit of luck. The annoying part is just how time-consuming that is. Imagine the horror of walking all the way down to the car to find your keys were in your bag or something. That’s the kind of problem Tile solves, first world as it might be.

One catch – you can’t change the Tile’s battery

There is one really annoying catch with Tile. The device’s battery lasts for about a year and after that, you’ll need to fork out for another Tile. This does seem a little ridiculous when other devices on the market like Flic make it really easy to change the battery. Tile do, however, have an exchange program called reTile. While better value and more eco-friendly than buying a new Tile, it still seems a little silly.

Changing the battery isn’t impossible though. You’ll void your warranty, but a silicon bib and a breadknife was all this lad needed.

4 of Ireland’s funniest Facebook pages right now

Smartphones and social media have given rise to the latest generation of celebrities in Ireland. For some strange reason, us Irish just seem to love a good Facebook page. Like, remember that time mass kicked off? We set out to find Ireland’s funniest Facebook pages.

Kilkenny: Fupin Eejits

The Fupin Eejits are three Kilkenny lads who’ve nailed going viral. Actually, so much so they had a documentary made about them called ‘Gone Viral‘. The three mental health nurses began building their empire on Vine where videos like this ‘gas’ helium balloon clip got noticed around the world. This clip has almost 50 million loops on Vine:

Many learned the harsh lesson of building an empire on the borrowed land of social media when Vine closed down earlier this year. The Fupin Eejits had reacted quickly and have generated a following of 90k on Facebook. The Fupin Eejits made headlines again recently with a serious video drawing on their mental health background and featuring their trademark humour:

The Fupin Eejits are well worth one of your Likes on Facebook. They videos they churn out are hilarious, a mix between giggles at both modern life and Irish nostalgia. Like who doesn’t remember there being a video man?

Tipperary: The 2 Johnnies

As if producing hurling geniuses wasn’t enough, Kilkenny and Tipperary are churning out great Facebook comedians too. The 2 Johnnies rose to fame with their appearances on RTÉ’s All Ireland special ‘Up for the Match’. Here, they showed off their musical talents, creating a belter of a tune for Tipps All Ireland charge:

As a Kilkenny man, I can tell you that’s like nails on a blackboard for me, so they obviously achieved their goal. Then continued down the road of creating a few GAA related hits, the latest of which was their look at children’s dreams of playing county:

The 2 Johnnies are no strangers to the classic viral comedy clips either. They’ve captured every single moment that every teenage disco had. Honestly, right down to the “will you shift my friend, no? Right, will ya shift me?” detail:

Kilkenny: Simple Craic

Kilkenny alone is throwing out some of Ireland’s funniest Facebook pages and Snapchatters. You may recognise Shane O’Keeffe, better known as Simple Craic, from his several appearances with the Fupin Eejits. Actually, there’s a fair chance you just recognise him from his own work like his piss-take of that ‘pineapple pen’ song:

That’s far from the only time Simple Craic has been on the ball with trending piss-takes. Shortly after a Kerry shop posted two chickens having a gawk, Simple Craic was on hand to make some improvements:

Kerry: Tadhg Fleming

Clearly, our scientific research as shown there is some sort of comedic culchie correlation going on. Kerry’s Tadhg Fleming is probably one of the fastest rising funny Facebookers out there right now. So fast, we actually just added him to the list. He’s got the added benefit of a clearly mad family supporting his efforts. Not sure I’d like to see my Dad with… well, I won’t ruin the surprise:

Tadgh also has a typically Irish outlook on what’s going on in the world. You’ll probably find it rather interesting that he’s also spotted that weird yellow thing in the sky this week:

And as with all Facebook comedians, Tadgh is quick off the blocks with his stuff. One of his latest videos rips the piss completely out of the mental fidget spinner yolks that are sweeping the nation. What the bloody hell are they anyway?

Have we missed one of Ireland’s funniest Facebook pages?

We don’t claim this to be an exhaustive list. Let us know if there’s an Irish Facebook page creating great original comedy and we’ll give them a feature.

Update: We’ve added in Tadhg Fleming, a gas huar from Kerry.

Cardboard Gangsters is a Love/Hate movie on steroids

Does anyone else have that itch that Love/Hate leaving the TV created? We’re fixing for more fast paced Irish gangland that’s not the RTÉ News. While many were hoping for a Love/Hate movie, Cardboard Gangsters looks like it could deliver far beyond what we’ve seen on the small screen.

The Cardboard Gangsters of Darndale Dublin

Cardboard Gangsters follows a couple of Dubs trying to take control of the drug trade in Darndale. The movie stars John Connors, best known for his appearance in Love/Hate. Connors plays Jay Connolly, a part-time DJ and low-level drug dealer. He’s loving life on the dole until that gets cut. Unlike most people, he saw this as the right time to become a gangster full-time, entering the big leagues. Like a football scout, a local kingpin sports Jay and propels him further down a violent and bloody path.

Cardboard Gangsters is already wowing audiences

The film has been rocking around the festival circuit already. It’s picked up three awards at Manchester Film Festival earlier this year. It’s even landed the Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California. There, parallels were drawn between the movie and the work of Guy Ritchie and Danny Boyle.

From one look at the trailer alone, that experience will pay off. Cardboard Gangsters might be the Love/Hate movie everyone wanted, filled with money, power and sex. This is one we’ll be counting down the days to. The date to mark in your diary is 16 June.

Spotify Codes launches in Ireland making music sharing super simple

0

The world’s most popular music streaming service is making music sharing easier than ever. Spotify Codes has just launched in Ireland, so here’s the craic with it.

What are Spotify Codes?

spotify codes in useThe best part of having a roast chicken for dinner is when you pick the leftovers at night time. Right now, Snapchat is that roast chicken. Facebook, as in the umbrella group for Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, have borrowed features like Stories recently. Spotify has decided they’re a little peckish, coming to see what’s for the pickin’.

One feature Facebook hasn’t ‘borrowed’ from Snapchat yet is Snapcodes. These are unique images that can be scanned using your camera on your phone through Snapchat. Snapcodes add contacts to your Snapchat app and can even bring you to websites. This is the feature Spotify decided they’d like to ‘borrow’, allowing you to find songs and playlists by scanning codes.

How to use Spotify Codes

There are two ways you can use Spotify Codes:

Sharing music

The first thing you’ll need to know is how to create Spotify Codes, but it’s pretty simple. In the app, just tap the three dots in the top-right corner of your screen. Then you’ll see a new code below the cover image of what you’re listening to. This works for songs and playlists, making it super easy to share. One idea here is that a friend could then scan your screen. The other is the huge potential for artists to share the hell out of their codes online and on albums, posters, lampposts etc.

Finding music

When you come across a Spotify Code, it’s really easy to scan it. Open up the Spotify app and go to search. Where you normally type in what you’re looking for, you’ll now also see a camera icon. Tap that and the camera will load allowing you to line up the Spotify Code on-screen. The app will then load up the song, artist or playlist that you scanned. It actually does it in a fraction of a second too.

You can test it out by giving my Motiving Marty playlist a listen.

Sky Now TV arrives in Ireland for some no strings attached fun

Full disclosure. I’m a happy Sky customer. It’s not often I get to say I like a service, but I like Sky. It’s a premium service for sure and I pay for it, but I feel it’s good value. Some might not agree and choose not to have Sky. I totally get it. But, doesn’t it suck when something comes up that you’d just love to watch? You know, that one game or one series is on that makes you wish you had Sky? If this is you, Sky Now TV should be music to your ears.

Spongebob Squarepants GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

What is Sky Now TV?

Traditionally, to have Sky meant you needed to have a dish installed on your property connected to a box with a 12-month contract. Ugh, right? Sky Now TV is access to Sky TV powered by the internet that you can connect to as you wish. Instead of 12-month contracts, access to Sky Now TV starts from just one day and rocks up to one month.

Why should I use Sky Now TV?

Simply put, Sky Now TV gives you a huge amount of freedom.

Sky Now TV at Christmas

Christmas is a great example of why you would want Sky Now TV. We looked at Google search trends for Sky Now TV in the UK where it’s established. We found that there are sharp increases around Christmas Day because people are fit to kill each other with boredom. Of course, the solution isn’t to sign up to a 12-month contract which is where Sky Now TV comes in. Pay €15 and you’ll get 30-days of full access to Sky Movies. That’s plenty to get you through the Christmas.

Short term access for big sporting occasions

I have all the Sky channels and I’ve found myself getting back into Formula 1 to justify another couple of days to have Sky Sports. However, many will only want Sky Sports infrequently. If you’re a big fan of big Golf or Darts events, you might only want access to Sky Sports every few months. Sky Now TV gives you 24-hour Sky Sports access for €10, one week access for €15 or a month for €50. So if you want to have everyone around to watch a big derby match as a once off, this is a great option.

It’s great if you live in apartments

A lot of apartment blocks actually don’t allow Sky dishes to be installed. Sometimes, this leaves people with only the poverty channels, ewww. More good news if this sounds like your situation. The basic Entertainment package through this streaming service is actually incredibly good value.

sky now tv entertainment channels For €15 per month, you’ll get access to a load of channels and 250 Sky boxsets. Some of the series included is our beloved Silicon Valley, Prison Break and Game of Thrones.

How do you watch it?

You can stream Sky Now TV to any smart device or through a dedicated Roku box, designed especially for the service.  Of course, right now that means you’d also be dodging the TV license unless the government have their say.

Best of all, there’s a 14-day free trial for everything, except sports. Give it a lash.

The Great 2017 WhatsApp Outage

Right now, there’s a generation trying to work out the limitations of SMS messages. They’re learning that international messages cost a lot of money and as for sending GIFs? Well, let’s just say there’ll be a few hefty bills next month. The cause of all this? There’s a worldwide WhatsApp outage – thems some fairly scary words, aren’t they?

WhatsApp is down? What’s happening?

Just after 9pm this evening, reports that WhatsApp was down in Ireland began to emerge on social media – namely Twitter.

And it’s not just us, as reports from Western Europe, Asia and America are also rolling through news feeds. It would be easy to miss too as there is little or no warning in the app when there is an extended lack of connection. Users just see that bloody little clock when they send a message. Using the word unprecedented might seem a bit dramatic, but literally, it’s a suitable term. WhatsApp has been extremely reliable since overtaking SMS messages in recent years, with this being the biggest outage yet. Plus, it’s not Viber.

Why is this such a big deal?

Ah sure, it’s not really a big deal. There’s probably a few people angrily waiting for a reply to a message, but there’s hardly planes falling from the sky. But right now, Sky News have their super dramatic rolling ticker describing the outage. Services going down like this do serve as a warning because we’ve become so dependant on instant messaging. Twitter is lighting up with people almost relieved it’s widespread rather than just their issue. For the love of God though, don’t revert to Viber.

It’s definitely North Korea

Well, we did spot that more people were Googling ‘World War 3’ than usual. Ah no, while WhatsApp has been fairly silent on the issue so far, we’re sure some engineer just tripped over a cable or something. Or, it’s the end of days. How are we supposed to know? Our North Korean WhatsApp group has gone totally silent. And we don’t chat on Viber.

How to survive the Great WhatsApp outage of 2017

There a few simple tips to get you through. Remember, when texting internationally, you need the international dialling code. Also, if you’re messaging two people at once, that’s a MMS message, because texting two people is the same as sending a picture. And MMS needs special settings. Go on, call up your network provider and ask whoever answers for your MMS settings. We’re probably at the stage where that’ll be a first for them. Bless.

Update 11.20pm: Typically, just as I’m about to hit publish, I hear the WhatsApp notification on my phone. Guess we survived the Great 2017 WhatsApp outage.

Update 11.30pm: No, no. Still no WhatsApp. It’s banjaxed.

Update 11.40pm: No seriously, now it’s back.

1 Second Everyday: A video app even cooler than Instagram’s Boomerang

Us Irish are useless when it comes to some aspects of new technology. We’re often years behind Europe and the UK. Video was, for quite some time, another great example of this reluctance to adopt tech. That was until Instagram launched Boomerang, a fun video looping app. Well now that we’re over the video hump, you should try out 1 Second Everyday.

What is 1 Second Everyday?

There’s a fair chance you’ve pulled together the gist of this app already. The app allows you to capture a 1-second clip every day. It will remind you when you haven’t already captured your clip, ensuring the movie of your life continues. The app has received massive coverage including a TED Talk after being backed on Kickstarter.

Why is this better than Boomerang?

Well, honestly, it’s down to opinion. I feel that Boomerangs, as cool as they are, simply capture a moment. Usually, this moment is pretty goofy because of the looping effect. 1 Second Everyday just feels much more meaningful. It’s not about the instant gratification of capturing a silly moment on Instagram. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy those too, but there’s something about the long project that appeals to me.

Granted, there have been updates to the app in recent times that might detract from the idea. GIF looping, unlimited seconds can be added to days, little things like this. Still, the foundations are there and they are brilliant. By downloading the app, you’re committing to a much long term project. By the end of it, you’ll be reward with a movie of your life, packed with memories. Here’s the original clip that started it all:

This isn’t even my movie, but I almost feel an emotional connection to the clips. In this modern age of social media saturation, to enjoy such a connection online is rare. Give it a try, I’ll think you’ll enjoy it.

Download 1 Second Everyday on Android and iOS now.
