A New Stephen King Crime Series Started on RTÉ Last Night and No One Even Knows.

0

2017 seems to be the year of the King; Stephen King to be precise. He has had massive success with his adaptions this year. So far we’ve seen The Mist, The Dark Tower, and of course IT and at the end of this month, we’ll see the intense thriller adaption of ‘Gerald’s Game’ come to Netflix. But last night, his new gritty crime series ‘Mr. Mercedes’ aired on RTE, based off of the first book in a trilogy of the same name.

What can we expect from Mr. Mercedes

Mr. Mercedes follows retired detective Bill Hodges, played by our very own Brendan Gleeson who is still haunted by the unsolved case of ‘Mr. Mercedes’. The series opens with a scene showing the murder of 16 people, including a young mother and her child, by a man driving in, you guessed, a Mercedes-Benz.

We fast forward two years to Bill Hodges trying to get on with retired life, but the lifestyle doesn’t suit him. Divorced and living alone, he only has his neighbour Ida and pet turtle to keep him company. He spend’s his days walking around empty beer cans and whiskey bottles in his home, neglecting his physical condition

One day, Bill receives an email with a video attached. The video contains footage of Mr. Mercedes taunting Bill. The voice over is reminiscent of Jigsaw in Saw back in the day with animations of the victims speaking over him. Once the video ends, it deletes itself from his laptop, leaving no trace or clues to investigate. When he approaches a former colleague about the status of the case, it seems it has run cold and he must take matters into his own hands to take the demented psychopath down.

What Did We Make of It?

Our first impressions of Mr. Mercedes are positive. It’s one of those shows you’ll look forward to every week. As someone who hasn’t read the book, I am very interested to see where it takes us. It isn’t like normal crime drama’s where we don’t find out who the killer is in the end. We are introduced to him immediately and follow him as he torments Hodges to the edge of sanity.

This new show grabs you with the opening scene and Brandon Gleeson’s performance holds you throughout, playing a character racked with guilt and a new obsession with catching his tormentor. It is very much a sick game of cat and mouse which isn’t for the faint of heart. We recommend this new dark gritty thriller and we look forward to being taken down the rabbit hole and finding out what else Mr. Mercedes has for Hodges.

When Is It On?

Mr. Mercedes is a ten-part series on RTÉ every Tuesday night at 10:15pm. In this day and age, we no longer look forward to our weekly series what with Netflix and online streaming these days. We now generally tend to binge watch series in a couple of days. Mr. Mercedes is well worth recording on series link and will give you something to look forward to every week. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t like a bit of Brendan Gleeson?

You can still watch the first episode on the RTE Player and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments below.

Sky Knights Review

Before we get started here can we all please take a moment to watch the Sky Knights trailer. Trust me you’re going to enjoy this:

We got BETA access to this game a few months back and ruddy hell it’s the best craic I’ve I’vegaming in a long while. To be honest every young boy back in the day had notions of becoming a fighter pilot. Probably just after watching Top Gun for the first time. Frankly, it was either that or being a beach volleyball player. Surprisingly neither worked out.

Many years later ‘Sky Knights’ lands on my desk for an auld review and this mid-twenties man fell right back into feeling like an eight-year-old. Excitement levels at 90!

‘Sky Knights’ is one of the most simple and well-made PC games that any of us here have had played in a long time. Martin’s an avid flight sim fan and he actually liked this because you don’t need to know your flight sims inside out to play it. Even better, in an age where buying a game usually costs €80 this game is great multiplayer entertainment at an incredibly reasonable price. What’s not to like!

What Is Sky Knights?

So ‘Sky Knights’ is essentially a top-down 4 v 4 online action game where you get to take o the role of a modern fighter pilot and pretend to be Maverick all in one. The game which can be found on Steam has been created by indie game dev and former fighter jet mechanic Hampus Bankler. He knows a thing or two about addictive games after being one of the lead developers of Angry Birds.

Fly with mates or other online players against another team and battle in the air, obviously as the game is still in beta I spent a lot of time playing AI. Which is a good thing because a  lot of these kinds of games I’d be awful at, so the practice is always nice. When you start the game literally the first thing you’re going to notice is the Top Gun vibes all over the place. For our younger readers, it’s a movie go watch the old men are telling you to go now!

Top Gun inspires a lot of ‘Sky Knights’, which even has some very “Danger Zone” esque music playing throughout. It really all adds to the experience.

Pew Pew Pew

Once getting into the game as per usual there is a standard tutorial mission to teach you all the basic controls. Nothing to difficult either:

  • Throttle up/down
  • Turning
  • Shooting
  • Bombing
  • Changing weapons
  • Landing

And that’s all the controls needed to get your wings and start gaming, whether that’s against AI or random internet strangers.

Right now ‘Sky Knights’ offers one game type as it’s still in early release. Your objective is to destroy enemies forward operating bases before they manage to destroy yours. Games can last anywhere from 5 minutes up to even 20 minutes.

In the game you can play as one of two factions, NATO or PACT both of which give you access to three different styles of plane. The first is the air to air fighter, which has no bombs so cannot destroy bases but is highly effective on other aircraft. The second plane is a ground attack aircraft which is purely designed, as the name suggests for ground attack mainly, but can also be used to fight against other planes. Last but certainly not least is the multi-role fighter which can bomb bases and engage in battle with other aircraft. So test them all out, find what suits you and let the carnage begin!

I played using the keyboard just after breaking my controller. I would suggest using a controller if you have one for a better experience. Having said that the keyboard was perfectly fine and smooth. I just prefer a control so players using a controller will have almost no advantage versus the players using a keyboard, whatever you prefer will do finest.

Sky Knights offers an in-game leaderboard and as you keep playing the game you will start levelling up and unlocking bigger and better upgrades for your plane. You start off with rank 25 and work your way up to becoming an ace and having your name written for everyone to see. That is until the current season ends and gets reset (a very upsetting moment I must admit.)

Oh and finally, Sky Knight actually offers loot boxes. Purchases using the in-game currency you earn from playing and select different boxes ranging from common to rare Ar the moment you can only customize tail & nose artwork but if I was a betting man I would say that won’t be the case when the full version comes out.

The Verdict

Thus far with my many hours of flying warfare under my belt, I have yet to experience any bugs or crashes, which for being an Early Access game is a pleasant surprise. Sky Knights just feels like it’s already the finished article. Which it ain’t so I can’t wait to see how the finished article adds up.

The only negative comment I can pass on Sky Knights is this; not enough planes and factions. Give me more planes to mess around with and this guy might go missing for a few weeks. Oh and maybe a first-person angle as an alternative to the top-down look, just because it would look amazeballs. To be fair, the game is in early days so it’s great and going to get better.

As far as modern games on any platform go, this one is as chape as chips and it is worth every single penny. I promise you that. So if you fancy giving Sky Knights a whirl and getting to grips with a game I think could potentially rival Rocket League we have got the link for you right here.

Would you like a copy of the game? We’ve got a few to give away. Take two seconds to enter for one of the Steam codes we have to give away.

5 ‘Ancient’ Technologies that are Still Used Every Day in the Modern Office

A long long time ago, before the advent of the internet, we lived in what some believed was an easier and less complicated world. In this world, to communicate with someone you simply picked up the phone. The device was easy to use because it only had one function; make a call. Nowadays, with the lightning evolution of the internet and technology in general, we communicate through Whatsapp, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat, to name just a few. People are even buying watches to improve their health!

However, some ‘ancient’ technologies are still staples in the ‘modern’ office. These are classics that you’re probably still using in some way, shape or form, coming under the banner of ‘oldies but goodies’ which can still benefit us long into the future, albeit with a few modern-day tweaks.

5. The Standalone Calculator

Did you know that the calculator has been around since the 1600s? Yup, that far back. The first representation of the ‘modern’ calculator, called the ‘Calculating Clock’, was invented by Willhelm Schickard in 1623. It had an abacus to simplify multiplication and division and a dialled pedometer for additions and subtractions. But it wasn’t until 1851 that the first commercially available calculator called the ‘Arithmometer’ (good luck pronouncing that one!) was invented by Thomas de Colmar.

Fast forward 100 years to the 1960s, and we are introduced to the electronic calculator and then the pocket calculator in the 1970s; who wouldn’t want to carry a calculator everywhere they go! Anyone who works in the financial sector can attest to standalone calculators being an invaluable tool in the work day. They have evolved to perform complex mathematical problems with scientific and graphing calculators now existing. An ancient technology adapted for modern use; they are efficient, reliable (I have never heard of a calculator dying) and most importantly, you can carry it in your pocket, despite what your secondary school teacher may have told you.

4. Landline Phones

The phone was created in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell. This was a marvel of an invention, enabling near instant communication over large distances. Given its limitations in connecting just a few people, the technology soon evolved, with the creation of the landline in the early 1900s. I love when you think of a word’s origins – a line across land; beautiful.

Despite the introduction of modern communications such as email and other office messaging services, the old reliable landline is weathering the technological evolution storm. In offices and especially when calling customers, building relationships is key and many people still prefer talking over the phone – unless it’s a chipper, in which case webchat all the way.

3. Printer and Paper

The majority of offices throughout Ireland still use print off reams of pages that will eventually sit in a folder in a filing cabinet, never to be seen again. Just think of the trees! But seriously, in an era where China is building a ‘forest city’ to combat pollution and aid in the absorption of CO2, we need to migrate to environmentally friendly ways to run offices and reduce energy consumption.

Cloud Computing is definitely a more eco-friendly and business-friendly option here. It has tons of benefits such as access to files from any location via the internet, time and cost efficiencies, preventing waste and disaster recovery. It has taken off on a personal level too with the likes of Google Photos growing in popularity. Are you backing up to the cloud?

Paper looks like it will weather the storm. Just think of Kindle. Many bookworms still love the smell of paper. Us humans are a funny bunch.

2. CDs, DVDs and USB Flash Drives

First came the CD in 1982, followed by the DVD in 1995 and then the USB flash drive in 1999. Okay, I can hear some of you already say flash drives aren’t ‘ancient’ but, in the era of the ‘cloud’ and given that 1999 was 18 YEARS AGO, file hosting services are now ‘it’ when it comes to file storage and sharing. That, of course, doesn’t mean that everyone is on board with this technology. CDs, DVDs and USB flash drives are still used by many for their cheaper cost, reliability and the often-deciding factor that they don’t require access to the internet; If a snail could give your internet access a run for its money, then these ‘ancient’ technology alternatives could be the way to go for now.

1. Faxing

The earliest concept of the fax was invented back in 1843 and the modern design is still a stalwart in many offices today. Take, for example, the health system; the fax is essential to their working day. It is a technology which has become engrained in some industries to the point where the thought of change is too much to bear. A recent study by Bitkom (it’s in German, but your browser should be able to translate it) shows that 70% of German companies still use faxes, which seems somewhat archaic at first glance.

However, evolution has even occurred to the fax in the form of internet faxing services. You can now send and receive faxes securely online by email or within a mobile app. Who knew even the fax machine could get an upgrade in the modern office.

To sum up all my rambling, the continual evolution of technology is amazing but some ‘oldies but goodies’ are definitely worth keeping!

Which of these ‘ancient’ technologies did you last use in the office? Let us know in the comments below.

Check If Your Ryanair Flight Has Been Cancelled

0

Well, that’s a bit of a disaster really isn’t it? Ryanair has messed up some schedules and as a result, they’ve had to cancel a load of flights.

We’re not here to point fingers or play the blame game. We’re here because there was no easy way to check if your flight has been cancelled or not. That’s why we build this Ryanair Flight Status Checker.

How to Check if Your Ryanair Flight is Cancelled

Straight up, we built this pretty quick, so it doesn’t work great on mobile. If you’re really worried that you might be on a cancelled flight, hop onto your desktop. Other than that, here’s what you need to do. Using the tool below:

  1. Enter your Ryanair flight number (eg. FR 3412)
  2. Enter the day you were going to fly on (eg. 4th = 4)
  3. Finally, choose the month you were flying (eg. September or October)

Now that you’ve done that, you’ll see either a red “cancelled” or a green “okay”.

If you’re one of the unlucky cancelled flights, Ryanair are making efforts to refund, to the letter of the law. Should you find yourself in a bind, check out Google Flights to find the cheapest alternative arrangements.

While we did our best to build this tool as accurately as possible, we do recommend that you double check your result against Ryanair’s official list of cancelled flights.

Skip the Lunch Rush Queue with Bamboo

Here at Goos3D, there are three things we love:

  1. Food
  2. Tech
  3. Everything Irish

Luckily for us, we have found a nifty little app that hits all three. A short while ago at the Dublin Tech Summit, we spoke to the guys from Bamboo. While we had a quick look at Bamboo a few months back, now we’ve had the chance to sink our teeth into some tasty bites to give you the scoop!

What is Bamboo?

Think of this: about an hour before lunch and your mental clock starts ticking. Work matters little at this point as you begin the internal “what do I want to eat for lunch” process. Realistically you get an hour to eat, relax and get back to work. To top it off, you’ll know “that guy” is probably going to be in front of you.

There is literally nothing worse than “that guy”. He’s always ahead of you in the queue bitching about his sandwich toppings, burning up your valuable lunch break. Thankfully, Bamboo is a new Dublin based app that’ll help you show “that guy” the middle finger.

Bamboo is a great little app that allows you to pre-order your lunch in Dublin. Once you’ve pre-ordered your food through the app, you can also enjoy the added benefit of skipping the queue. Take that, “that guy”.

How Does Bamboo Do It?

Well, basically Bamboo has partnered with a rake of cafes and restaurants from around Dublin. This includes the Cocu Cafe on Baggot Street where I had the joy of having lunch. There already an impressive list of places to grab a bite and there are more to join too.

The coolest thing about Bamboo is once you place your order, progress is given in real-time.

Jon’s Journey Into Culinary Bliss

What I want to do here is give you all the step by step process as to how I got the lunch of my life through this nippy little app! This journey involves:

  1. Login and Search
  2. On Your Bike Lad
  3. All the Notifications
  4. Get back to work in plenty of time to actually enjoy your lunch

Quite possibly the hardest part of any food eating experience selecting what the hell you want to eat. Fun food fact: the average employee in Ireland spends 29 minutes getting lunch every day. From my experience, a solid 20 mins of that is picking, and the rest queuing.

the average employee in Ireland spends 29 minutes getting lunch every day

That’s what makes Bamboo so handy, just log in either with an email address or via Facebook and voila the game begins.

The app gives you a list of places to eat with a nice little image behind the name, just to give you an idea of what they serve. You’ll also be able to see how far away they are and their opening times. This was super handy because I was able to order my morning latte, a day in advance. Guess what, it was ready just in time for me to land on to collect it. SAVAGE!!! Fun food fact: Lattes are the most ordered item on the app. Dublin you’ve gone all fancy on us.

Lattes are the most ordered item on the app

Right, well for my review I decided to go all healthy. Not all us techy types are pizza eating indoor goblins; well at least not all the time anyway. I went with Cocu Kitchen on Baggot Street, half because the food was a healthy choice and half because the walk didn’t seem to far. If I was going to eat healthy I didn’t need too much exercise; don’t judge me it’s a sound logic.

2. On Your Bike Lad

Food ordered and now we wait. Bamboo is all about efficiency and speed and their notification system is really impressive. You get notified when the cafe/restaurant has seen your order, so you know it’s time to start moving. The Bamboo team told us that the average time someone normally orders ahead is about 7 minutes which is plenty of time to get on your walk on or hop a Dublin Bike.

3. All the Notifications!

Not to worry Woody old pal, these notifications are in no way intrusive and they are reminding you about your food, something I adored. Sounds weird but walking down the road blasting the tunes, there is something comforting about knowing how your meal is getting on.

Remember the way I already said not to judge me, but after seeing that food order I can’t even defend myself. I started a new workout programme about a week before and this seemed healthy and tasty. Props Bamboo for making my diet that little bit easier.

Before I tangent again, yes the Bamboo app will notify you once your order is seen, once the guys in the cafe get the order going and most importantly when it’s ready to collect. Now if you have ever been excited about lunch, the moment you get that notification is just the sweetest sensation. When you hit that outlet, you get to stroll right past all the people who didn’t have the foresight to use Bamboo. You grab your food and go back about your day. Seriously use the app even just to watch the faces of people waiting. If looks could kill is all I’ll say.

It’s a delightful moment of sheer smugness that you will really enjoy as you skip past the death stares swinging your bag of delightfulness. Just don’t take it too far; totally no story to tell here or anything… ahem.

4. Get Back to Work in Plenty of Time to Actually Enjoy Your Lunch

Look at that for a meal and what’s best after all of this I still had a good forty minutes left of lunch. Plenty of time to eat without rushing and enjoy a bit of banter with the lads in the office. It just made my lunch easier and for that I loved it.

Conclusion

Honestly, the only downside I can see here is the fact at this moment in time the app is only available in Dublin. Of course, that could be all about to change since Bamboo has impressed so much that it’s now part of Google’s “Adopt a Startup” program. Here, they receive mentorship and support from Google along with another Goos3D favourite, InvizBox.

If this app were to go nationwide, we could be talking something that could rival the big hitters in the culinary collection/delivery circles. Personally, my lunch was quicker and healthier because of this system. I didn’t leave the office unsure of what to get and made the healthy choice. I had more time and more importantly than anything else “that guy” in the suit who gave me that look probably had to wait another ten minutes for food while I was chilling out and eating my lunch. Just an all-around game changer.

Download the Bamboo App now for iOS and Android.

Marvel’s The Defenders: More Than Just an Avengers B Team?

0

The Defenders is another Marvel and Netflix collaboration but is it a rip-roaring success a la Luke Cage or more the meandering mess that was Iron Fist? Does the Avenger’s B team hold up to scrutiny or have Netflix decided that these comic based series are an excuse for lazy showmanship?

Honestly having sat through the lot I find it hard to tell. The Defenders is a satisfying superhero team-up with a gritty undertone that’s characteristic of the comic studio’s previous Netflix shows. Apart from Iron Fist, God above that was utter tripe!

Credit where it is due, Marvel know a good storyline. By setting the story in New York and giving each of our heroes a particular set of skills they have, from the get-go, been peaking our interests with the inevitable Avengers comparisons. Jessica Jones like Black Widow, Luke Cage of the same ilk as Captain America, Daredevil a reverse Iron Man and the Iron Fist a bitter disappointment.

Image result for marvels the defenders

Anyway, as I was saying the Avengers comparisons are even to be seen in the storytelling. Four different and individual heroes come together to take down a common enemy. Like the Alien invaders but more normal.

A Usual Marvel Script

The crew come together by chance but as you could guess this volatile lot just can’t get along. So they fall out near the end of episode three, setting up a series patch up your difference speeches and an unwanted bonding.

Image result for marvels the defenders the hand

The bad guy? The Defenders come together to take down the Asian Magic Mafia aka The Hand led by the chilling capitalist Alexandra Reid (Sigourney Weaver). She’s the center of this shady organisation who have gotten up to some seriously weird shiznit such as the disappearance of young street criminals offered lucrative employment by invisible bosses (a crime that’s investigated by Cage); a missing-person case involving an absent father who turns out to be harboring explosives in his apartment (Jessica Jones); and ninja assassins infiltrating the United States (Danny and Colleen’s mission). Daredevil’s previous series is central to the set up of The Defenders so I will let you figure that one out for yourself.

Pacing problems

In making the small screen version of The Avengers, Netflix has made a number of mistakes. In the earlier days of the Marvel/Netflix collaboration character detail and an urban pulp, atmosphere are so finely wrought- Luke Cage more than the others to be fair.

There was a personal affection that has been built up with these heroes. Jessica battling a spectral rapist, Danny feeling guilt over leaving the mystical city of K’un-Lun unguarded, Matt giving up his Daredevil identity and trying to make sense of his love life and his faith, and Luke becoming a local hero despite his prison sentence. It was these personal and sometimes painful stories that managed to make each of The Defenders relatable. So it was a bit of a shame to see these aspects rushed through in a couple of short scene’s, just to get the team together for an almighty punch fest.

While some of the previous shows have suffered from “Netflix bloat”, (having a 13 episode series while only having the content for 10) this 8 episode series still does not manage to get this right. The pacing is all over the place certain interesting subplots become sidelined for no apparent reason other than speeding up the main storyline, while the only true references to character backstory comes from rushed dialogue such as “You know what your problem is? You’re not comfortable with what you’ve become.”

They try and try but Netflix just doesn’t hit the nail on the head here. If the point of The Defenders is to get the heroes together why not start things off from that point rather than making us wait for the fourth instalment.

Local Heroes

Image result for marvels the defenders

Here’s the thing there are very few of the aspects of what made the Daredevil and Luke Cage so successful. The grittiness and real-life reflection that was their marker is replaced by some awful cringey parts, sadly pulled directly from the Iron Fist storyline. You know the awful oriental clichés, and the entitled white dude act gets really boring really quickly. We get it your parents got killed and now you’re the Iron Fist, just please stop talking and punch somebody- is that too much to ask?

And it’s such a shame because like Luke Cage and Daredevil there is a sincerity and community focused take on superhereoing not often seen in the genre. Imagine Captain America only being interested in Brooklyn for example – he’s more interested in the global mission. Whereas these superheros are more community pillars and they see their job as protecting the people they care about, which is a nice change and adds an element of reality to the series. As the show ramps up during the latter episodes some topics such as institutional racism, rapacious real-estate development, and gentrification are discussed very openly and frankly. While when disaster strikes New York City, there are mentions pointing out that poor people don’t have insurance to cover repairs.

Yurt or Dirt

The humble team up… a time honoured tradition of superhero fiction. Suicide Squad, The Justice League, The Avengers and now The Defenders have come to the party with a very different take.

It worth mentioning the intimate nature of this series versus any other superhero bonding session movie is this, none of the other mentions has portrayed the same level of geographical intimacy. Rather than the usual, we have to save the world, the galaxy.. nope just our city where we and the people we care about life, it’s just less fantasy which is nice. All the while focusing on a handful of characters. The personal drama element usually goes out the window in place of childish battles of the school ground arguments like whether Iron Man could beat up Captain America or if the Hulk could take Thor. While the Defenders looks at thing on a more human level asking how exceptional but damaged people with radically different worldviews and life experiences find common ground and fight for the greater good (which is the story of democracy itself). Pairing the white rich boy with the hulking bulletproof African American seems like a political argument come to life.

I guess that’s what saved The Defenders to me. Some really cool, exciting scenes and some drab nonsense. The Netflix Marvel collaboration has been really good so far but they almost lost their touch with Jessica Jones & Iron Fist so it’s great to see this series bar the two shitty character gets the series back on track in time for the new Punisher series, which will be epic! just see for yourself:

Your Definitive Price Guide for the New iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X

0

After months of speculation, rumours and leaks, Apple’s 10 year anniversary iPhone X is here. So now that we finally have the low down on the new iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X, the net question is ‘How do we get our hands on one?’ Well, Ireland’s networks have released their prices. And they’re a bit steep.

When can we get one?

So the new models haven’t actually been released yet, but they are available to pre-order. Although it seems as of right now the only place you can pre-order the models are on Three, the Carphone Warehouse and from the Apple Store themselves. Apple seems top be the only one at the moment offering the models on pre-pay.

Apple

If you were to go directly from Apple, you’ll be getting an unlocked model, which could set you back a bit more than the locked network models.

An iPhone 8 64GB will set you back €829 while the 256GB will set you back €999.

An iPhone 8 Plus 64GB will start at €939 and the 256GB will be a month’s rent for a nice apartment in Dublin at €1109.

An iPhone X take things to another level altogether. Starting out at what is a pitiful 64GB for the price of €1179 and rising to an eye-watering €1349 for the 256GB model.

So now that we’ve established that we will not be going with pay as you go prices through Apple, let’s move on to what the networks are offering.

Vodafone

No pre pay prices have been announced yet on the new models so let’s cut to the chase.

iPhone 8 64GB

No word yet on prices on the iPhone X, but based on the prices we’ve seen so far, they’re set to be high so you might want to start saving.

Three

Three work a bit differently. If you are getting a new contract, there will be an up front cost. But their upgrades go off of how long you have been a Three customer on contract. Their upgrades go from A-F  . A being the most expensive up front payment and F being the cheapest. It’s also worth noting Three are the only network that provide unlimited data which can be the difference between going with them and any other network as data fees can be very expensive if you go over.

Again no X prices but we’ll keep you posted!

Our recommendation would be the iPhone 8 64GB on €45/month. If you can get past the smaller screen and no bokeh effect on the camera, the iPhone 8 is just as good as the plus. As an iPhone 7 user, I love it. After 5 months of non-stop use it never glitches and I can only imagine the new A11 Bionic chip will be able to handle even more stress. The only drawback is the 64GB storage. But if you are good at managing cloud storage you should be able to get passed it.

Make sure to keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates on the iPhone X network pricing soon.

South Park Rips Into Amazon Echo, Google Assistant, Siri…

0

I recently wrote about how talking to devices wasn’t going to be weird for much longer. Well, South Park just took the piss out of smart assistants, from Amazon’s Alexa powered Echo to Google’s Home. Once South Park is ripping you out of it, your time for the big leagues has come. The age of voice search is here.

Alexa, What Happened in South Park?

South Park Season 21 returned in a typically South Park fashion. The creators took on tiki torch wielding racists in America and every smart assistant under the sun. How could they possibly link these two items…

they took our jobs gif

Yup, sure enough, red necks of the south don’t appreciate all these fancy smart devices coming in and taking everyone’s jobs.

Ok, Google: Why is that So Funny?

The real laughs come about because Cartman and his friends love nothing more than making their Amazon Echo say loads of rude bits and pieces. There was no avoiding it…

Indeed, my Echo Dot kicked off almost immediately following the commands of the South Park characters. It set alarms, said good night, added undesirables to my shopping list among other things.

There were some other funny bits, but I’ll leave them for when you watch the show itself.

You can catch the episode in full on Comedy Central, Friday 15 September.

Grazie Mille Duolingo: Student Earns an A in Italian But Never Went to Class

0

Through Junior Cert, Leaving Cert, College and night school, I’ve tried to master the German language. Now that you know that much, you’ll understand how incredibly jealous I am writing about this. Eimear Kennedy, a 15-year-old Junior Cert student from Clare, just got an A in Italian without attending a single class.

A Junior Cert student from Clare got an A in Italian without attending a single class

Duolingo Actually Works If You Stick At It

Eimear went on a trip to Rome last year and fell in love with the Italian language. Rather than start taking the traditional route and taking it as a class, Eimear downloaded Duolingo. Using this free language tutoring app, she picked up the basics, enough to start practising with some Italian exchange students that she befriended. Right now, I just want to finish this article up, download Duolingo and give it another try. I’ve given up so many times, doubting that you can even learn a language through a free app. Eimear has proved you need to stick at it to success, but also that some additional creativity can help too.

Support Your Duolingo Education With YouTube

Eimear tapped into the secret of Duolingo success. While the app is great and turns language learning into a game, to really succeed you need culture immersion. The exchange students provided a great place to practice her Italian, but she hacked access to even more culture through YouTube. You know those clips that you waste evenings watching on YouTube? Well, Eimear was doing the same, but she was watching them in Italian. From there, she graduated up to Italian TV shows and pop music.

Reaping the Rewards

Ok, so full disclosure. Eimear is obviously a pretty smart teenager. Overall, she landed 11 As in her Junior Cert. One of which was her self-taught Italian. Honestly, she didn’t have one lesson with a teacher; it’s not even on her school’s list of taught languages. All of this using nothing more than free tools you can get, right now.

Go on, give Duolingo a lash. You can even learn Irish through the app.

PES 2018: The total football review

In football we love a good ole rivalry. United V City, Madrid V Barca, Celtic V Rangers and of course FIFA v PES. The most divisive and highly contested battle any game console has ever witnessed returns again this year with the release of Konami’s PES 2018 title. Now while I am a self confessed FIFA 2018 man myself, it would have been rude not to give the underdog a run out to see what it’s all about.

Nice little trailer to be fair, and it is clear to see that PES 2018 have got a deal going with Barcelona. They are one of a few clubs who have their real players, stadium and name actually being used, at this rate we might have the full catalogue of panels by 2082.

In the eyes of the most hardened fans the great thing about PES is the fact that first and foremost it is a football game, without the glitz and glamour of it’s rivals. In fact to many PES 2016 has been heralded as the best footy game ever made. The game play, opposition AI and general mechanics took the title to another level. Something which Konami have remembered this year. Forget the showboating, the authentic jerseys and everything that FIFA holds of PES 2018 because at the most basic level one of these is a true thoroughbred of a football game. Hint: it’s not FIFA, PES 2018 gets right to the nuts and bolts of everything that happens on the pitch and it delivers this in spades.

True to Life Gameplay

Where PES 2018 excels is on the pitch. Each game is different, the tactics and varied playing styles are clear to see. Each big name footballer is modeled on the real life player, meaning guys like Ibra or Lukaka are powerful monsters who can bully any defender. Take players like Hazard or Neymar and you have a completely different experience, the way the player can control the all with sharp movements is incredible and so realistic and I like it because the player then has to change their playing style according to the players at their disposal. Almost like real football.

Apart from individuals, teams approach games similar to their name sakes. Players can set up in the hyper pressing styles of Liverpool’s Klopp, a counter attacking style straight from the Mourinho handbook or even the hit and hope style of the Irish national team. It’s really cool and shows how far FIFA have to go despite this years improvements. Now as a guy who has a soft spot for Fulham I had a crack playing in the lower leagues and wow the difference between the top tiers players is clear. Try hitting that sweeping cross field 50 yard pass, I dare you. It won’t work so I had to find another way to play, this was a nice change of pace because it just feels real.

Of course there will always be one complaint. There is a monumental difference between forwards and defenders when it comes to their off the ball AI. ‘Keepers are a bit keen on the big save, rather than simply catching the ball. It can become a bit frustrating especially when defenders seem to slip out of position. I noticed forwards, wingers and marauding full-backs make exceptional runs to find space so when your defender won’t track the runner it means goals from crosses are a dime a dozen. Small complaint with a simple solution, keep possession.

While the game play is second to none, we all know PES has plenty of problems and they pop up again in this years version.

New year, same old problems

Usain bolt

Yup your’e seeing that right, Usain Bolt is in PES 2018. Why? who knows but my guess it’s to try add pzazz and hide the obvious downers. Which there are many!

With the rise of extra gaming modes in FIFA coupled with the amazing game play PES offers it is becoming increasingly difficult to overlook the major issues with the series. The game’s main single-player mode, Master League, has barely changed, save for a ‘Challenge’ mode that makes signing players for your team more difficult. Don’t get me wrong I’ve enjoyed building my teams up from scratch but it looses appeal quickly. While the PES 2018 competition to Ultimate Team is simply weak. Ok Konami wouldn’t have EA’s budget, that’s fair enough but come on I’m not paying €70 quid for a game to be bored in a week.

Don’t get me startedd with the commentary, wow just wow. Has the line ‘too much flesh and blood’ ever been said in a real foot game? No, so give me something a bit more real and substantial rather than attempting to create nonsense cliche’s. Honestly I turned off the commentary after my third game and stuck on some tunes in it’s place.

Image result for pes 2018 vs fifa 2018 graphics

While again the game play is outstanding, player graphics are not great in comparison to FIFA. Licence agreements are all over the place and the menus come across as clunky. Sadly Konami have had to really on fan made customisation for players to update kits, I mean I get it competing with EA financially is not going to happen but surely if the players can develop realistic kits then so can the developers. Fingers out lads, it’s lazy and I ain’t buying it.

The Verdict

This one is tricky, off the field PES 2018 is actually a steaming pile of horse shit. In the nicest possible sense. The menus are just shockingly difficult to navigate, online modes and general server issues are just not up to scratch, poor graphics in comparison to the competition, idiotic commentary and just all around lacking in general presentation. Despite the PES community smashing it when it comes to recreating unlicensed kits for use.

However with that being said, when you look beyond all that and get onto the game PES 2018 is unreal. There’s just something about the players’ movement and the kinds of arcs the ball makes in the air that’s just so pleasant to control–every pass, header, and shot just feels right. Unlike FIFA where we all see mental goals and severe unrealistic game play at times, PES never has this problem. The tactical set up is something I really enjoyed as this is a pet peeve of mine in other titles it’s the closest feeling you’ll get to being out there scoring yourself.

Soooooooo ya great game of football but all the side stuff and attention to the small details that make up the game are sadly lacking. While hipsters who like to consider themselves sporting purists will continue to support PES the rest of us will keep sitting happy with FIFA. If the closest i’m going to get to playing in the Premier League is through a console I dam well want it to look and feel the part, surely that’s not too much to ask?

star rating 3.5
While the gameplay is unrivalled, the lack of licencing cheapens the game slightly. Below par graphics and substandard commentary means PES 2018 will remain in FIFA’s shadow a while longer.
