7 apps Pat Hickey and John Delaney need in Bangu Prison

0

Bangu Prison is likely a lonely enough place for the two poor lads who popped over to enjoy a bit of sport for the summer. Pat Hickey and John Delaney would appear to have years of (alleged) debauchery and swindling catching up with them. Fortunately, technology can help even those who are (allegedly) up a certain creek without the O’Donovan brother’s paddles. So assuming Pat and John could get their hands on a smartphone, what are the most helpful apps they should download?

Tripadvisor to review Bangu Prison

banded up banguFirst of all, when travelling the world and seeing the sights, Tripadvisor acts as a fantastic guide to ensure you always see the best bits. Right now, Pat and John might be a little limited in what they can review. With that said, we’re interested to see how the two lads rate the standard of food and hairdressing inside Bangu Prison.

Ticketmaster/Vibe could have avoided this mess

We do feel for the lads. Simply trying to sell off a few tickets they had acquired. Little did they know tech could have helped. Ticketmaster has been providing a fast and convenient way of buying tickets for years. Perhaps even more fitting is Voom Finalist Vibe.

Startup Vibe is a new platform allowing people to sell tickets to each other at face-value. Ironically, we previously covered this app during Ireland’s Euro 2016 campaign as the touts were out in force. If only Pat and John knew such avenues were open to them.

Duolingo to brush on up their Portuguese

Sharing a prison cell with Felipe who doesn’t speak a word of English is rough. The lads could be in for quite a lonely time. Duolingo is a fantastic resource for anyone to brush up on their language skills, or learn from scratch. If Pat and John get their hands on a smartphone, this should be the first app they download. The cúpla focail as Portuguese could be a life saver for the two lads as they try to continue their life of schmoozing in Bangu Prison.

Snapchat for disposable pictures

snapchat in banguFor any of these apps to benefit Pat and John, the pair will first have to get their hands on a new smartphone. The reason being Brazilian police have confiscated their own phones. Police interest in phones means they are looking for texts and photos. Now, the last thing the two lads want the police to find is them rolling around a Rio bed covered in Olympic Tickets. Snapchat provides just the perfect app for the job, with self-destructing photos.

Snapchat also has the added benefit of being able to return the locks of hair Pat has reportedly lost on entrance to Bangu Prison. Daily Snapchat filter updates with different hairstyles and generally humorous augmented reality scenarios will surely keep spirits high.

RTÉ Player to keep up with current affairs

There is a fair chance that Bangu Prison officials aren’t keeping the lads up to date with progress in their cases. Pat also had the bad luck of being nabbed before the Olympic games ended. A great way for the lads to pass the time is RTÉ Player and keeping up with the latest news in their cases. It’ll also give them a great avenue to watch the final few days of Olympic events they missed. It’s not like they won’t have the time.

Twitter purely for Paddy Barnes

It’s debatable as to whether or not this is a good idea. Believe it or not, the two lads have had a nation’s anger directed towards them for their ticket touting shenanigans. Not least of whom is boxing light flyweight and social media heavyweight, Paddy Barnes. Paddy was quick out of the blocks as he heard about Pat’s capture. Not one to miss an opportunity is our Paddy.

Netflix

True crime has become a hot topic lately, with the likes of “Making a Murderer” capturing the world’s attention. In the fallout of the series, one of the main protagonists might even get out early. There are plenty of other shows to keep Pat and John busy once they finish the true crime stuff too. Let’s not forget Netflix boasts “Orange is the New Black”.

Pat Hickey and John Delaney can probably expect an extended stay in Bangu Prison. While they might be there for a long time, it doesn’t have to be a bad time. Thankfully, technology should help time fly past for them.

Android TV Boxes: Benefits, savings and what you need to know

0

Have you been seeing “Dreambox” Android TV ads on Facebook saying they could save you a fortune? Are you paying over €70 for broadband and television – if not more.

The cost of entertainment

Your modern entertainment needs are likely fulfilled by a basic Sky or Virgin TV package, weighing in at €30 monthly. You might be adding up to €40 a month to that with the inclusion of movies and sports: so you can keep an eye on how your Fantasy Football team is doing in the Goos3DLeague. Everything else needs to be powered by the web, so you’ve also got a broadband package likely setting you back €40 a month.

If you’ve been keeping score many can expect to pay an eye-watering €1320 per year for your home viewing experiences – and that’s before taking Spotify and Netflix into account. Chances are with the latter of this apps, you don’t even use them as much because they are limited to your phone.

There is an alternative

Android powers Android TVThose ads you see on Facebook claiming to be selling magical Android TV boxes are indeed offering an alternative. It’s somewhat of a grey area if you can throw your mind back to the Showbox days, it’s very similar. Dreamboxes are effectively Android TV boxes, and will set you back anywhere between €70 to €150. The humble Android TV box comes in many shapes and sizes and run everything from Kodi to Showbox and beyond. Dreamboxes are setup with Kodi to stream access to premium sports and movies. This does come with a warning that the party is unlikely to last forever and is, at best, a legal grey area. Still, several benefits of having an Android TV box are completely legit making them great value.

What is an Android TV box?

Basically, the Android TV box gives you the power of an Android tablet/phone on your TV. As it’s powered by Android you get access to the Google Play Store. This access gives you a wide variety of applications you can now stream on your TV: think Spotify and Netflix.

Setup is simple, as you connect your Android TV box to your TV via HDMI and the internet by WiFi (or sometimes LAN to give better streaming).

Features of Android TV

Web Browsing

Ok, this one should be pretty straightforward. Like anything that hooks up to the internet any standard Android box will be equipped with one if not a number of internet browsers whether it be Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Whatever you do on your laptop, you can now do on your TV.

Social Media

As we said it behaves likes and Android phone, so the usual arsenal of social media apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so on so forth come pre-loaded on most Android TV boxes. In today’s world, social media probably gets more attention than the people sat in the room with you. So use the box to load those selfies or have a social game on Tinder with your mates it’s bound to be a bit of craic.

Kodi

Kodi powers Android TV boxesHave you ever heard Kodi or XBMC mentioned? If you already know what it is, great – for those of you who don’t know what it is, it’s an all in one media centre app, it can provide streaming for music, video and more, but wait. Kodi is also the brains behind the Dreambox replacing your TV subscriptions, but again remember this is a grey area.

If you’re a sports fan or movie buff then Kodi is an absolute godsend. Search an exact movie title or filter by genre. Kodi can also stream both live free streams and some paid streams.

Netflix & Showbox

If you watch Netflix on your laptop or PC, you can just as easily use it on an Android TV box, the only difference being, you’ll be able to watch all of your favourite Netflix programs on your big screen TV. Showbox is similar movies and box sets on demand and even updated as they become released on air.

Verdict

What are you waiting for? As long as you have a relatively decent internet connection then an Android TV box is a must. They’re the next generation in TV, no matter what you want to watch, or when you want to watch it, an Android TV box has you sorted. While the party might not last forever, the boxes do provide some sort of great alternative to bills too, but make sure you keep the broadband paid!

Plan a Smart Wedding: Use tech to get more from your big day

0

With everything else becoming smart in the world, we bring you through the steps required to plan a smart wedding.

What is a smart wedding?

The modern age has seen our world become more connected that ever. Often a celebration of tradition, there are several ways you can discreetly usher technology in your smart wedding. To host a smart wedding is not to say there will be drones flying around the first dance or a robot greeting guests. A smart wedding, to us here at Goos3D, is you getting the very most from your big day and making the planning process as simple as possible.

Plan your smart wedding using Wunderlist

Wunderlist makes organising a smart wedding easyWunderlist is a must have for those seeking to inject a bit of organisation into their lives. Such a craving for organisation normally comes during the planning phase of a wedding. Our in-depth research (a season and a half of “Don’t Tell the Bride“) has shown us that one-half of the wedding party is usually the organised one. Wunderlist is a must have if you are that other half – aka the unorganised one. The app lets you categorise your tasks and set reminders for their due dates.  As you complete tasks you mark them completed.

Considering your smart wedding is going to be one of your biggest days, you might even consider investing in Wunderlist Pro. The best feature of Wunderlist Pro is the ability to assign tasks. So if your other half was supposed to confirm the DJ, you can see if that’s been crossed off their Wunderlist or not. Wunderlist feeds even the most control hungry of smart wedding planners out there.

Decide upon your smart wedding hashtag

Wedding hashtags are an essential part of a smart weddingYes, you need to have a wedding hashtag. A hashtag has become one of the most interactive and rewarding elements of a smart wedding. By deciding upon a unique hashtag and making it known to your guests, you are growing the number of photographers present exponentially. Your smart wedding hashtag will also act as a unique identifier for IFTTT – which we will discuss later.

Get a shared email address

Naturally, a shared email is only going to be used for wedding-related stuff, but it’s a handy little tip to ensure both parties are up to date on the latest communications. Using an application like IFTTT also has added benefits when you can both access the same Google Drive account, so we recommend you get a Gmail account.

If This Then That

IFTTT is one of our favourite apps and it runs most of our lives in Goos3D Tower. IFTTT also places a huge amount of power into the hands of a smart wedding planner. Now that you have a wedding hashtag for your guests to use, you’ll need to scrape everything from the internet that uses it. To do this, you need IFTTT and some recipes.

Save photos from your wedding hashtag on Twitter

This recipe will automatically save any photos posted to Twitter accompanied with your wedding hashtag. If you play around with IFTTT you also find options such as automatically retweeting anyone using your wedding hashtag amongst other great recipes.

IFTTT Recipe: When anyone Tweets with your wedding hashtag automatically save the pic to your Dropbox connects twitter to dropbox

Email your DJ with your latest favourite tracks

This recipe is probably our favourite out of the lot. No smart wedding would be complete without some cracking tunes. Normally, you’ll have briefed your DJ with the music you would like weeks in advance. There is always the chance you’ll hear a new song you love a week before the big day. This recipe emails your DJ with every song title you add to a specific playlist in Spotify. You’ll need to have an agreement with your DJ about doing this of course, but you could recommend they use IFTTT to manage emails from you too.

Keep track of wedding receipts

A side project of IFTTT is the DO series of apps. DO Camera is a useful one for smart wedding planners. In the run up to your big day, you will be racking up the receipts. DO Camera lets you launch a secondary camera app on your phone. Photos taken with DO Camera app are organised into specific Google Drive folders. Now you have a folder filled with images of your receipts. Genius.

Samsung Galaxy Gear S3: The athletes watch?

0

The impending release of the Samsung Note7 hasn’t stopped Samsung from also plotting the release of the Galaxy Gear S3 smartwatch.

Galaxy Gear S3: All about timing

Talk about 3It’s perfect timing for Samsung to release their new watch as smart watch sales declined by a third this year. The release of the Note7 sets the stage for Samsung to harness the buzz around a handset launch will help entice customers to buy the Gear S3. A familiar strategy that paid off for Apple when they released their Apple Watch with the iPhone 6. Samsung are one of a few firms not to suffer watch sales decline. The timing of the Gear S3 launch should keep Samsung ahead of the curve.

Naturally, the question emerges for the customer. With there be much reason to upgrade from their Gear S2? Should wearable fans wait for a decrease in S2 pricing? We’ve looked into what to expect and will let you decide on weather or not it’ll be worth investing in.

Expected Specs

Galaxy Gear S3 metal bandFrom the teaser images Samsung has released, we expect the watch to have a rounded face. This seems to be the preferable trend from smart watch consumers. They seem to want to keep their watches similar to your standard watch, but with the added perks of it… well… being smart.

On the theme of design, if leaked images are accurate, we can expect to have a premium metal band on the watch.  To maintain a grasp of the wider market, it’s likely Samsung will also release a lower end model. Such a model will probably come with a rubber, or possibly leather, band for those who don’t want to spend an extra few bob on a metal band. Or for those, like myself, that just don’t like them.

It’s rumoured that the size of the bezel will decrease offering more touch space for users without making the physical size of the face bigger. Bigger isn’t always better. The frame of the watch face will be able to rotate also to give you more functionality in the watch.

As of now, there doesn’t seem to be much more in terms of the hardware of the watch. So let’s delve a little deeper.

Sensors

The new Galaxy Gear S3 will be coming with various different sensors. Depending on your hobbies, some of these may be of use to you. Mainly people that are into their fitness and want to keep track of their progress.

An altimeter, barometer, and speedometer may be of use for the runners or cyclists out there. Also, the Gear S3 boasts a GPS sensor so you can keep track of your routes that you take during exercise. It will also display weather information in real time so you know when it might be time to turn around and run to the safety of your warm home – a handy feature for us here in Ireland.

And as nearly all premium smart watches have nowadays, there will be a heart rate monitor to also keep track of fitness levels. Plus a sleep sensor so it can keep your sleeping patterns up to date, which is important for people that are into fitness. Finally, the watch will be waterproof too which will appeal to the swimmers out there.

Conclusion

While not many other details have been confirmed, we speculate on a 2-day battery life expectancy, Gorilla Glass 4 for the display, S Voice integration and of course a notification system that will integrate with our phone. But the main question on everyone’s mind is, what is this going to cost me?

Right now we reckon you’re looking at about €400 for the Galaxy Gear S3. But again, different models have yet to be confirmed. Although we don’t even know what this price is based on as of yet. The release date for the watch is August 31st, so at least we don’t have to wait long for our questions to be answered.

Samsung Note7: Hands on at the Dublin launch event

0

Normally a niche smartphone, we attended the Note7 launch in Dublin recently to see if it might appeal to a wider audience. Spoiler alert: it does.

Crowd gathers at the Note7 Launch in DublinA great crowd in attended the launch of Samsung’s latest superphone at Dublin’s RHA Gallery. Hosted by Pat Kenny of Late Late Show fame, futurist Rudy de Waele delivered a great keynote on the importance of smartphones as our key to connectivity. A smart approach to launching a phone such as the Note7 as Samsung let the handset speak for itself in the demo hall.

Hands on with the Samsung Note7

The highlight of the event itself was the Note7. We recently outlined our reasons for being on the fence about this phone’s relevance in the market. After just a few minutes with the phone actually in-hand, opinions change a little bit.

Design of the Note7

Comparison of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung Note7The Note7 is slightly bigger than the Galaxy S7 Edge. On paper, that equates to a 5.7″ screen versus a 5.5″ screen. Side by side, you would be hard-pressed to tell the two handsets from each other. Holding the handset doesn’t make it any easier to tell the two apart. You wouldn’t notice the bigger Note7’s design as it fits really snugly in your palm. The curved edges of the screen is extremely subtle and the blue model is gorgeous – much nicer that the blue Galaxy S5 that we feared was being resurrected.

Unique features of the Note7

USB-C

Bottom of Samsung Note7Lots of the hardware onboard the Note7 echoes the Galaxy S7/S7 Edge, but two big features stood out on the bottom of the device. Many of those accessories you have will no longer be directly compatible with the Note7 as Samsung finally opt for a USB-C charging port. For the user, this means faster data transfers, faster charging and the knowledge that the local pub is unlikely to be able to give you a charge.

S-Pen

If you are looking for the most exciting feature on the Note7, look no further than to S-Pen. While not a new concept, the Note7 boasts the greatest integration of a stylus with a device we’ve seen yet. The S-Pen makes it possible for you to really consider going paperless for taking notes and the like. You can even jot down notes on the screen when the phone is locked: adding to the convenience.

The S-Pen has been overhauled with lots of neat features, but the best by far is the clicky tip. The clicky tip features on the stylus for reasons.

Iris powered security

Note7 main and IrisYou won’t feel like you’re living in a futuristic world until you unlock your Number26 bank account app using a fingerprint. With that said, we are excited to do the same by simply looking at the Note7. The Note7 is the arguably the first mainstream smartphone to feature technology which scans your eyes to unlock the device.

What else was on show

Samsung Gear 360

Image of the Gear 360 Samsungs vr cameraProduction delays led to delays in the availability of the Gear 360. Such delays should be in the past now, as the latest in image capturing was on show at the Note7 event. Combined with the companion app, users can capture stunning 360 images with no visible stitch line. The Gear 360 is rumoured to be entering the market at £450 so whether or not it will be accessible remains to be seen.

The primary obstacle facing the Gear 360 is Facebooks integration of panoramas as 360 images. Sure the quality isn’t quite as good, but the vast majority of consumers aren’t looking for perfection in this area just yet. Here’s a 360 panorama shot we took at the event using a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

Expect the Gear 360 to hit the Irish market in October.

Samsung Gear VR

The new Samsung Gear VR Note 7Quite the opposite to the Gear 360 is the Gear VR. Coming in at just €99, the Gear VR is an affordable alternative to high-end virtual reality devices. The latest, black version, of the Gear VR will be much like the model that shipped with the Galaxy S7. Notable differences included an updated touchpad and interchangeable connections for micro-USB and USB-C.

The Verdict

Getting hands on with the Note7 has allayed any fears that this was just a phone for the sake of it. Director of Samsung Ireland, Gary Twohig, described Samsung’s goal of purposefully innovating in the industry – a mantra the Note7 fulfils. The Galaxy S7 Edge was and is a brilliant handset, but Samsung managed to include enough features in the Note7 to make it more than simply noteworthy.

Clockwork Synergy: Affordable silicone smartwatch bands

0

The Huawei Watch ships with a standard leather band leaving us searching for a more sports-friendly band. We discovered Google project Mode but felt it was too pricey, leading to our discovery of Clockwork Synergy‘s silicone smartwatch bands.

What do Clockwork Synergy do?

Clockwork Synergy are smartwatch band specialists, with over ten years experience in the industry. Offering both a wide range of materials and colours, Clockwork Synergy most recently moved into manufacturing watch bands for wearables. This is where we became very interested in their bands.

The range of smartwatch bands

Huawei Watch bandThe wearable accessory specialists offer a wide range of bands for various smartwatch users. Some of the pioneers of the market feature including our beloved Pebble smartwatches. Naturally, you will also find bands for the Apple Watch and a wide range of Android Wear devices, including the Fossil Q Founder, both Moto 360 models and of course the Huawei Watch.

Features of the Clockwork Synergy silicone smartwatch bands

While researching the best fitness wearables on the market, the Huawei Watch emerged as a potential suitor. The problem was the leather strap being hugely unsuitable for exercise. And so began the journey which led to Clockwork Synergy. We got some of the silicone range designed especially for the Huawei Watch sent out to us and here’s what we thought.

Silicone smartwatch bands

Spotting a gap in the wearable accessory market, Clockwork Synergy set out to create a very affordable option for smartwatch users. While they are affordable, the quality doesn’t let up. Our biggest concern would be that a band at such a low price would fall straight off our wrist. Fortunately, that was not the case as the band fit the device perfectly.

The other concern we had was the material irritating the skin, but again Clockwork Synergy’s experience in the industry shone through as the bands were extremely comfortable giving no issue, even with prolonged wear. Please note some of the work out sessions were not so prolonged due to a distinct lack of fitness from the author.

Customisation

multi-colour silicone smartwatch bandsThe range of colours available ensures all users will find a band that suits their taste. Better still, the options are not limited to the colour of band, but the combination of band colour with buckle style. You can choose a buck from a nice variety, including brushed steel and rose gold.

We particularly liked the inclusion of a pink, rose-gold watch strap which made what was a very masculine watch, feminine.

Quick release smartwatch band

Quick release silicone smartwatch bandsAnd to our favourite feature: the quick release. Obviously, given our desire to find a band that we could quickly pop off and swap out, traditional watch straps simply wouldn’t cut it. The guys over at Clockwork include the quick release functionality seen on the official Huawei Watch bands, making it extremely convenient to change between business and sports.

The verdict

While these silicone smartwatch bands are available at a low price the quality does not match. Sure enough, it’s just a simple smartwatch band, but they breathe a new life into your wearable. While the Google Mode does achieve something unique, they are expensive and don’t really provide anything more convenient than these silicone bands. Transform your wearable from business watch to fitness tracker in just a few seconds it takes to swap the bands. This bands are available starting at €12 and can be bought on the company website.

Google Duo: Video calling is about to get popular

0

Google are just about to launch their new video calling app: Google Duo. We take a look at why this is a really big deal for everyone

Why do we need Google Duo?

There is currently no shortage of video calling apps on the market. It started with Skype, now owned by Microsoft, and hit the mainstream with Apple’s Facetime. Unfortunately, by being innovators, Skype gained a reputation for being pretty crappy quality and Facetime is typically Apple in being limited to iOS devices.

Google have a history of creating universal platforms. First of all, there was Android, which needs no introduction. In the near future, we expect to see virtual reality being standardised with the launch of Google Daydream. With Google’s track record, it’s easy to see why we’re excited about Google Duo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIeMysX76pM

What makes Google Duo different?

While Skype is available on all major platforms, it’s not very popular because, well they screwed up so many times with video lag and audio that makes it sound like your speaking into a Pringles can. While Facetime is brilliant, Apple never saw fit to develop an app for Android. Of course, Facebook Video Calling should have been a massive success, but there were huge trust issues around the company forcing Messenger on users.

Google is a largely trusted company and while Apple boasts the most popular smartphones on the market, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone without a Gmail account. This means for most people, it will be quite easy for everyone to adopt Google Duo.

Google Duo features

Knock Knock

The worst part of any call, video or phone, is that first second. You might not be sure who’s calling, what the context is or if it’s worth putting trousers on. Google Duo’s Knock Knock lets you see a brief video of who is calling you. This sets you up for the call and even lets you be a little creative about encouraging them to pick up.

Google Duo Knock Knock

End-to-end encryption

Thanks to one Mr. Robert Snowden, the public now understands the importance of security. Google Duo, like WhatsApp, will provide end-to-end encryption. This basically means that your video call is secure and will only be visible to you and who you call – no one can intercept it in the middle.

Simplicity

We leave this for last, but really it will be the key to Duo’s success. All you need to get up and running with Duo will be an Android or iOS device and a phone number. You can find other users with just that phone number. This removed the need to search for people by username or email address. Combine this with the likelihood that Android phones will ship with Duo as standard and the scene is set for Duo to grow in popularity very quickly indeed.

Download Google Duo

Google Duo is currently rolling out internationally so you can download it for Android and iOS. It is rolling out in stages, so if you can’t download now you can preview on iOS and pre-register on Android.

Coding for Kids: If you thought maths was important…

0

Helping out with homework is par for the course parenting, but new “coding for kids” initiatives could mean big changes for parents.

It recently emerged that coding might be introduced in schools. Coding for kids has potentially massive benefits with children learning the new essential skills and avenues for older generations to upskill opening up too.

Why is “coding for kids” an important idea?

Coding powers all technology

Technology is a part of everyday life now. We can’t live without it anymore. If every single computer device in the world shut down all at once, society would collapse. We use it for work, contacting each other, buying things and asking every question imaginable. It manages life-preserving systems and balances our stock markets, forecasting economic changes, stopping a worldwide financial collapse.

Shift in educational requirements

Technology has become insanely advanced in recent years. We’re sure you’ve all heard that the phone in your pocket is more powerful than the computers that sent a man to the moon. Few were taught the skills required to build these devices in school – many people taught themselves. Today, educators have realised the importance of computing and coding in the classroom, potentially proving more practical than Pythagoras’ Theorem.

Panicking at the thought of helping your kids out with their HTML?

First of all, don’t worry – it’s currently in the planning phase, so you have some time. With that said, coding is a great skill for you to learn for yourself and if you have kids, why not get a headstart? Programmes like the hugely popular and successful CoderDojo are well worth checking out, providing your kids (and you) with a great start in coding. You can even start building the foundations at home are apps you can download onto devices to start teaching your kids from an early age.

Apps to help you and your kids with coding

Coding for Kids: Tynker

coding for kids tynkerTynker is a web based coding application built to teach kids how to code from scratch. They can actually get to the point where they can create games that they can play. Starting from the bottom and working their way up, kids learn at their own pace in order to learn easily and have fun at the same time. Tynker provides an online course which develops parents or teachers, upskilling prior to passing on these skills to children. Tynker is described as suitable for 8 to 16-year-olds but at the ripe old age of 24, I can vouch for it being enjoyable for most. Plus it’s free.

Coding for Kids: Hopscotch

Hopscotch is an iOS app similar to Tynker, but further simplified. Like Tynker, you can create games, but Hopscotch goes further in encouraging users to build mini-websites, patterns, and drawings. Hopscotch teaches you the core concepts of coding and problem-solving, providing more of a challenge as users progress. Developing practical problem-solving skills as well as coding from a young age is providing your children with priceless skills at a very young age.

Or they could just use Hopscotch to recreate the entire Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer from emojis.

Coding for Kids: ScratchJr

coding for kids scratchjrScratchJr is an online tool providing written and animated guides for coding. Kids can create their own stories and watch them afterwards. We already imagine the kids loving the look on your face as you watch their creation unfold, making this a great bonding opportunity.

These are just three of the countless online coding platforms you can check out with your kids. Going beyond developing your children’s skills, if you have an interest in coding this is a great place to start. Parents are fighting a daily battle to wrestle kids away from screens so coding provides an opportunity to convert some of this zombifying screen time into productive skill learning. We can’t stress enough how beneficial coding is at a young age, teaching much more than just how to build an app. It’s important that we being considering coding a language and a discipline.

In case you don’t believe us…

Coding for Kids Josh BellThis is 16-year-old Josh Bell. Last year, Josh’s company turned over £250,000. This company, founded in Josh’s bedroom, was a hotel-booking website which over 95,000 hotels signed up to. The idea started after a conversation with a hotel owner and at the age of 15 he owned a company. Josh achieved these amazing feats because of self-taught coding. Imagine the possibilities for a generation immersed in coding. That’s why we believe in coding for kids.

Listen to YouTube in the background on iPhone and Android

0

The ability to listen to YouTube in the background of your iPhone or Android is a feature people have wanted for years. Unfortunately, app creators have been tied by YouTube’s terms of service forbidding the playing of videos in the background. Fortunately, we’ve found two ways to overcome this for both iPhone and Android.

Listen to YouTube in the background on iPhone

Apps make our lives easy every day. Not many realise that apps also place limitations on what you can do sometimes. The YouTube app is a great example of convenience and limitations. Of course, you can watch a huge range of videos, but with the app running in the background. This makes it impossible to listen to music with the screen off. Actually…

You can’t listen to the audio from videos in the background through the app, but there is a really simple workaround.

Play audio from YouTube in the background with Safari

play youtube in the background on iPhone

You’re reading the headline, thinking it can’t be so simple right? Here’s what you need to do in order to play YouTube in the background when using an iPhone:

  1. Open Safari browser
  2. Navigate to YouTube
  3. Select awesome video of your choice
  4. Press the home button
  5. Swipe up from bottom of screen to load quick navigation (Control Centre)
  6. Press play

It really is that simple. The iPhone system remembers the clip you were watching with YouTube via Safari and allows the Control Centre to play in the background. Beautiful.

Listen to YouTube in the background on Android

Unusually, iPhones are a little more accommodating for this workaround as you’ll need an app for Android. You’re likely familiar with the one you need too. In order to listen to YouTube in the background on Android you need to download is Mozilla Firefox browser and follow these steps:

  1. Open the Firefox browser
  2. Navigate to YouTube
  3. Select awesome video of your choice
  4. Press the home button

You’ll notice that when you press the home button and the Firefox app closes, your video continues to play. This means you can turn off your screen or go about checking Facebook while the music plays in the background.

It’s that simple. We love using Spotify, but this is a great and free alternative providing access to a huge database of music. We’ll be using this for loads of podcasts and TED Talks.

Google and the Pirate Bay – It’s complicated

0

For those of you who are passionate about file sharing you may be noticed the Pirate Bay is more difficult that usual to access. Likewise, is the recently decommissioned Kick Ass Torrents. In Ireland, eir and Virgin Media make life a little more difficult for those hoping to access the Pirate Bay, blocking direct access But what about Google?

Google

Many years ago you would have been laughed at for buying stocks in a funny startup called Google. In fact, the term startup wasn’t even commonly used then. Way back in the early days, Google had a mantra – “don’t be evil”. At the time this was a jab at the other large tech corporations who were out to make a buck with little care for the end users of their products. Nowadays Google tracks our every move, using collecting information for advertising, leading many to believe they’ve strayed from the motto “don’t be evil”.

Google and the Pirate Bay

In May, users familiar with the process of visiting the Pirate Bay were greeted with a “Deceptive site ahead” warning in their Google search. This wasn’t Google on a moral tirade against file sharing. There was actually some malware injected into the advertising on the Pirate Bay page. So, first of all that knocks on the head any thoughts that Google was bowing to Hollywood.

Google promoting the Pirate Bay?

A proxy site is a carbon copy of the original site on a different domain, allowing users to bypass roadblocks. Right now, if you Google search for “Pirate Bay proxy” you will be greeted by the usual Google search results. Google have also gone one better.

pirate bay and googleGoogle regularly displays rich content at the top of searches – Rio 2016 (above) being a great example. A very similar snippet appears for Pirate Bay proxies. Listed for the user are sites broken down by how fast they operate. Such a service, while likely automated, is some sort of showing from Google that file sharing doesn’t really bother them.

How long this will remain for is unknown, but it’s refreshing to see that there’s a little bit of that old Google motto remaining.
