Esports: Can You Really Make a Living Playing Computer Games?

0

The world of Esports is growing at an explosive rate and it’s proving a mighty headache for mothers around the country too. For years, mammys around Ireland shouted up the stairs at kids to do their homework because “you’ll never make a living playing games”. Well, those days are well and truly gone as the new sports superstars of the world are gamers. So what are Esports all about and why have they become so immensely popular?

What are Esports?

Long story short, Esports refers to the world of professional and extremely competitive computer gaming. Depending on the game and match type, Esports are either played individually or in a team. The growth in Esports comes as multiplayer games and internet connections become more plentiful around the world.

Now, consider your first reaction as you try to process the idea of Esports. It might be a scoff, a laugh or even disbelief. Your first reaction might be like this BBC news anchor who is quickly put in her place by colleague and Esports journalist, Julia Hardy.

Indeed, those number would make the ears of many prick up and take this movement seriously. The industry generated €600 million in 2017 and is expected to generate an incredible €1.3 billion in 2020.

What Games Can You Play Professionally?

Believe it or not, the most popular Esports games aren’t traditional sports like football ported onto a gaming platform. Actually, you have to go all the way down to 28 on the list to find FIFA representing as the top traditional sport.

Defense of the Ancients is a multiplayer game based on the hugely popular Warcraft III. The objective of the game is for two teams to battle their way across a map to each other and then destroy a heavily fortified target. DOTA boasts the biggest prize pool in Esports awarding €107 million in prize money to gamers so far. Other similar games like League of Legends feature in the list of most lucrative games, with LOL Esports perhaps generating the most interest of all online. To the general public, the likes of Halo, Counter-Strike and Call of Duty are arguably the better known of the games to feature in the top 20.

Can You Really Make a Living at Esports?

So if you’re a parent, should you actually start banking on your kids paying off your mortgage with a game of FIFA? Well, the full list of games is almost endless because any game where there is a winner and a loser can be played as an Esport. That means the potential to become a superstar is huge. Each game generates its own following and the interesting thing is that by playing at home in your bedroom you can benchmark yourself against the very best playing on the world stage.

As the 2017 F1 season came to a close in Abu Dhabi recently, so to did the inaugural F1 Esports Series, won by the British Brendon Leigh. Just prior to the final, F1 superstar Fernando Alonso announced he was launching an Esports team and that he had signed one of the finalists, Cem Bolukbasi, to his team. F1 has never been shy about splashing the cash in the past and their foray into Esports, along with the endorsement of Alonso, will give this particular Esport a massive boost. Sky Sports presented massive coverage of the series too, which is more good news for the sport as spectators play a crucial role.

Do People Actually Watch Esports?

people watching esports

Without an audience, emerging Esports will die, hence the importance of Sky Sports focusing on Esports. I’m sure they were just as interested to see how the public reacted to people playing computer games competitively on TV as the F1 organisers were. For the established Esports games like DOTA and League of Legends, attracting spectators has never been an issue. First of all, physical venues attract huge crowds who watch just like those who attend weekend football matches. In 2014, a whopping 45,000 fans attended the League of Legends 2014 World Finals in Seoul while other well-known venues like Wembley Arena has also hosted by Esports events.

The real beauty of Esports comes through how accessible they are to spectating gamers around the world. Being in a stadium provides you with the atmosphere and the comradery, but you can easily tune in and watch Esports on a games console, smartphone or laptop using services like Twitch amongst others. This ease of access has led to Esports generating a following reportdidly in the region of 145 million enthusiasts and even more casual viewers.

Esports in Ireland

So what’s the craic with Esports in Ireland? Well, we’ve had a professional team since 2012 thanks to Emerald eSports. Emerald eSports have players on their roster competing in Call of Duty, League of Legends, Halo, Counter-Strike and Battlefield, to name but a few but if you want to apply a really practical benchmark to how about Paddy Power? Paddy Power now allows their customers to place bets on Esports. While this raises moral questions around betting where young viewers may be present, from a business point of view this means there’s money around Esports in the UK and Ireland and that the future is very bright.

Earlier this year, Trevor Keane founded the Celtic e-Sports League, and envisions the growth of Esports in Ireland and the UK. The scope for growth in the industry is nothing short of breathtaking with the biggest UK prize pool standing at around €560,000 compared to the massive figures we discussed earlier in the US.

You can see why so many are excited by Esports and why big businesses like Red Bull are jumping in to capitalise.

Will Esports Be Big in Ireland?

Generally speaking, Ireland is often a few years behind technological trends, however, this is often caused by manufacturers not providing the hardware – think Amazon, voice search and getting an Echo Dot in Ireland. There are barriers to adoption which limit us.

Esports is different. From children to adults all over the country, there are no shortage of games consoles and PCs. It’s as easy to play DOTA or Call of Duty in Ireland as it is anywhere else in the world, so the outlook for Esports in Ireland is extremely positive.

If you’re shopping for a Christmas present this year, maybe give a games console or some League of Legends vouchers a thought. Your kids could be paying off your mortgage in no time at all.

firemole tops our Christmas Gift Guide

We absolutely love Firemole, a Cork-based startup which created a small gadget that will no doubt save lives. You stick the Firemole to the charger of your laptop, MacBook or smartphone charger and it will warn you if it’s about to overheat. The idea here is that Firemole will alert you to the danger being caused by chargers in the home.

We all know Dad’s police certain areas of the home with great care. While the immersion takes the top spot, fire safety is a close second. Making sure things are plugged out and that smoke alarms are working will soon be joined by Firemoles being all over the house, making them the perfect Christmas gift for your Dad.

You can pick up one Firemole for €12.99 or nab three for €36.99.

SensatioNail Home Nail Kit

We love nothing more than seeing expensive things like nail care come into the home thanks to some technological advancement. SensatioNail is a gel nail treatment carried out at home with special nail varnish. The varnish is activated and hardened by an automatically timed UV lamp. The resulting finish lasts for up to two weeks; much longer than traditional nail varnish.

You can pick up the full SensatioNail starter kit in Boots for €70.

Lock Pick Set

Ok, I admit this is not exactly techie and probably a bit of a stretch to be considered a gadget. It’s also quite likely the most unlikely entry you’d ever expect to find in a Christmas gift guide. Still, who hasn’t wanted to learn how to pick locks? I got one of these a few years back and the feeling when you pick the lock for the first time is simply amazing. The funny thing is that it’s surprisingly easy.

Best of all, you can pick up this lockpick starter set for under €20, making it the perfect office KK gift or something unusual to pop into a sock for Christmas morning.

Experience Review: The Stella Theatre – A Trip Back in Time

0

Going to the cinema isn’t much of an experience these days. Messy seats, crap nachos and popcorn which, if bought by the ton, would require a mortgage style loan. Thankfully, retro is hot right now and it’s leading to some great alternatives. Token is one of the coolest experiences in Dublin with great food, beer and tons of retro games. Retro is now rocking in Rathmines as the Stella Theatre is a trip back in time to when your aul pair were courting.

We popped along to the Stella to check out their Back to the Future matinee; it seemed fitting.

What is the Stella Rathmines?

the stella rathmines

The Stella Theatre, which is once again being affectionately referred to as simply the Stella, was originally opened in 1923. When it opened, it could seat 1,283 cinema goers, making it Ireland’s biggest cinema at the time.

Today, the Stella has reopened after an extensive refurbishment process and it maintains much of its 1920’s charm. As I mentioned, we were there for Back to the Future and it did feel like we’d just travelled back in time. The place oozes class. You can sit in either a large and very comfortable red leather single seat or a two-seater couch. There is also a matching red leather footstool for extra comfort which opens up to store your jacket away. It really is the little things that make an experience great.

If sitting is a little too modern-day cinema for you, there’s also the option of a two-person bed when you can lie down and watch the movie. Each place costs €19 so single seats cost €19, while couches and beds cost €38.

Food at the Stella

I already mentioned Token as being one of the best retro spots in Dublin and one of their big selling points is their food. I’m far from being a foodie, but they’ve passed the test with plenty of people who know what they’re talking about, namely the Ketty, the French Foodie in Dublin. If you’re running any sort of experience in Dublin, Token has set the bar for food. Stella saw the challenge and took it on nicely.

Two days earlier, I had been in one of your usual cinemas staring at some nasty nachos and melted cheese. While the Stella is a cinema, the selection of food is incredible, so incredible that I ordered more than I planned. The portions aren’t massive, but they are supposed to be tapas style with three or four being plenty for two. Before you ask, yes someone was with me, hence the huge order:

  • Chilli beef nachos, guac, sour cream and melted cheese
  • Chicken taco with avocado, sour cream, spring onion and cajun mayo
  • Because brunch there was also sausage, fried egg and hollandaise
  • Slow cooked Sticky BBQ Korean pork taco with iceberg lettuce
  • Along with a Coke and a coffee

All of that came to about €35, which is class. Better still, I didn’t even mention that it gets brought out to your seat and placed on a table beside you. Most importantly, it was damn tasty. Unfortunately, it was too dark to snap a pic of the grub which does lead me to one tip. Arrive early and enjoy your grub before the movie starts. Eating in the dark is a little weird! Beyond that it’s a classy experience all around, exemplified by their drinks menu.

The Stella also has a broad selection of cocktails and beers on site but I had the car so I couldn’t sample them. From what I’ve seen in terms of selection alone, the drinks menu is just as impressive as the food menu if not more so.

Movie Selection

Much like the vibe of the cinema, the movie selection is largely retro too. We went along for Back to the Future but at 11.55pm that night, the more modern Great Gatsby which was probably amazing given the flapper style of the cinema itself. Midnight movies are a regular occurrence in the Stella along with screenings of classics, but contrary to popular belief, they will also be showing some of the latest movies too. The next entry in the Star Wars saga will have a huge number of screenings.

Verdict on the Stella

The Stella is an incredible experience. The food is amazing and for the experience you get, it’s great value. It might not replace your regular cinema for the weekly trip out, but you’ll find yourself coming back to the Stella again and again.

Best Black Friday Deals on Amazon

0

It’s actually a little hard to believe that Black Friday is nearly here again. What started out as a single day of insanely priced gadgets, is now a week-long sales event for online retailers. Noone does both Black Friday and the days preceding it like Amazon.co.uk.

When is Black Friday 2017?

Officially, Black Friday 2017 falls on Friday 24 November. However, retailers love them a bit of Black Friday so the week preceding that date now also boasts plenty of largely discounted offerings, so Black Friday for many starts on Friday 17 November.

Don’t forget, you also have Cyber Monday. Black Friday, the week before and Cyber Monday are generally available in-store and online with the exception of Cyber Monday being largely limited to online retailers.

Why Shop on Amazon.co.uk?

Nearly every retailer goes bonkers for Black Friday but few go as big as Amazon. You might not think of Amazon as a great place for Irish shoppers to venture towards because they don’t officially service Ireland. Thanks to services like Parcel Motel and their virtual UK address, it’s really easy to order items to Ireland from Amazon.co.uk, even if they only ship to the UK. You might even get fast and free UK delivery if you’re an Amazon Prime customer.

The Best Black Friday Deals on Amazon.co.uk

If you’re more than a little tempted to pick up some discount gadgets from Amazon, here are the top three we’d be going for.

Amazon Echo Dot

Amazon loves nothing more than pushing their own produce throughout Black Friday. You can pick up both the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot for a great price right now. For most, we believe the Echo Dor is more than enough for most people and you can pick that up with a 30% discount right now.

If you’re still on the fence about which one to go for, check this out.

WeMo Smart-plug

You might have spotted our article in the Independent recently which celebrated how amazing the WeMo Insight Smart-plug is. Well, that plug is a second generation model with the model that came before it is a little larger and doesn’t track power usage. While this means you’re losing some great benefits, you can pick up this first generation smart-plug with a 49% discount.

If you’re also picking up that Echo Dot, this WeMo device is fully compatible with Amazon’s voice-controlled assistant. While a slightly different model, here’s what we thought of the WeMo Insight smart-plug:

Logitech K400 Wireless Keyboard and Touchpad

logitech k400

This will be of particular interest to Samsung Galaxy Note8 owners who also got the Samsung Dex. If you have Dex, you’ve probably been looking for a decent Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Actually, the need to have these things in the house these days is higher than ever as they connect to Android boxes, laptops and all sorts.

If that all sounds like you, the Logitech K400 is a must have gadget and now you can pick it up along with a 40% discount from Amazon. Still on the fence? Check out Jon’s look at some of Logitech’s best wireless accessories.

If you are looking to pick up a few gadgets even a few Christmas presents, head on over to Amazon’s Black Friday section. We’ve picked out three deals, but that section is jam-packed with rolling deals on timers so be prepared to part with some cash.

The iPhone X is Great News for Gadget Insurance Companies

0

My Microsoft powered laptop and Xbox just had the most frustrating drag race in the world. Which one could load the slowest? This would decide whether I wrote this article or continued playing Call of Duty World War II. As you can see, my four-year-old laptop won. Or wait, did the Xbox win? The laptop loaded first, but only just. Ah, screw this…

I’m Buying a MacBook

I’m putting this old girl out to pasture in the next few weeks and I’m making the big jump to buying an Apple laptop; a MacBook Pro to be exact. Anyone who knows me that this is a big deal. I’m not anti-Apple, but I do struggle to justify how much tech you get in return for your money. Not too long ago I carried out some research on how iPhone users not only spend more money online than Android users but they spend a massive three times more on average. This begs the question – are Apple users just more free spending with their cash?

Samsung Throw Serious Shade at Apple

Have you seen Samsung’s latest ad yet which throws serious shade at Apple?

It’s one of those ads where you kinda have to stop and ask “can they do that?”. The short answer is yes.

In case you missed it, Samsung takes aim at some of Apple’s latest innovations, highlighting that many of them have been available on Samsung devices for years. You’ll see bigger being better, waterproofing and wireless charging all make appearances.

This ad got me thinking, yet again, about Apple users’ spending behaviour.

The iPhone X is a Great Phone

I’m not going to pretend like I’ve had a chance to play with one yet, but as far as I can tell so far, the iPhone X has yet to disappoint many. The chrome sides, a clear hat tip to the iPhone 3GS are considered to be classy and the facial recognition seems to be working well. So, that negates the need for a home button and I’ve already accepted that Apple was right to remove the headphone jack on smartphones. They can feel vindicated for that.

The unavoidable jaw-dropper for the iPhone X is the price. The entry-level version of Apple’s mega-flagship will set you back €1,070…

jaw drop gif

Yup, it’s crazy money but I have the Samsung Galaxy Note8, which is itself ridiculous expensive, but only about €100 cheaper than the iPhone X. You could argue it’s cheaper to expand the memory of the Note8 but 64GB is a lot of memory and it’ll serve most.

We Need a Quick Reality Check

Samsung has kept this idea for a shade-throwing ad in their back pocket for quite some time. For years, their smartphones have been technologically streets ahead of Apple. Personally, I think they’ve played this card at a really weird moment. Yes, I can hear you now. “Ohhhh here he goes, he’s turning into an Apple head”, but hear me out. The iPhone X offers plenty of uniqueness that the Note8 doesn’t and visa-versa.

The iPhone X offers amazing augmented reality while the Note8 has a genuinely useful stylus – trust me it’s amazing. Samsung has had stronger moments in the past to play this card of one-up-manship but they waiting until they were actually on a more level playing field. It’s just an odd move to play this out between the iPhone X and the Note8 because they can genuinely go toe to toe, unlike the iPhone 8 and Galaxy S8 where the latter just has too much in the tank for Apple to compete with.

So What About the Phone Insurers

Right, well just like two wrongs don’t make a right,  two really expensive phones don’t make for good value. These are silly prices for smartphones. Yes, I’ve paid a silly price for a smartphone. I’ve accepted that and I’ve moved on. I’ve also insured it because, well come on! The damn thing is worth a small fortune. If you’ve bought a Note8, but especially an iPhone X, you really better be considering insuring it.

After seeing some early drop tests, the iPhone X might be taking the title from Samsung and the Galaxy S8 for most fragile phone on the plant. I missed Samsung getting another dig in at Apple after viewing that ad for the first time. The dude in the line, well his haircut is cut in the shape of the iPhone X’s distinctive “notch” screen. That is one of the unique design features of the iPhone X which has made repair costs for the uber-flagship skyrocket.

The Cost of Fixing an iPhone X Screen

To fix your iPhone 8 screen with Apple is fairly expensive. You’re looking at €181.30 in total. A fairly hefty fee for any device repair. Still, you can look on smugly has iPhone X users will pay €321.30 for a screen repair and an unbelievable €611.30 for repairs falling under the classification of other. Yup, you’d pick up a OnePlus 5 for that money.

If you’re buying with Apple, it might be worth considering AppleCare+ which dramatically reduces the cost of repairing screen and other damage for your iPhone X.

If you’re buying from elsewhere or from an Irish retailer, you really should pick a phone insurance company to cover you. Honestly. Actually, you know what? Stop reading this article right now and head on over to our other article that talks about phone insurers. Go on. There’s nothing else to read here anyway.

Assassin’s Creed Origins Review

0

I’ve had a bit of a love-hate relationship with Assassin’s Creed. I played the first game quite a while after it launched and didn’t get back into the series until some of the games were bundled in with my console. Being honest, I hadn’t played a game from the franchise for some time when Origins landed in and I didn’t know what to expect.

What is Assassin’s Creed All About?

Here’s the quick gist of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Using a device called the Animus, you play a character travelling back in time to relive the memories of age-old assassins. In these memories, you fight on the side of the Assassins who are taking on another ancient organisation, the Knights Templar.

Throughout the games in the past, you parkour your way over towns-worth of villages, fighting and assassinating your way towards your goals. Assassin’s Creed Origins takes these best parts from the early games and build upon that from scratch to create a game to shake the complacency of more recent entries to the series.

What is Assassin’s Creed Origins All About?

As is often the case with ‘origins movies’, Assassin’s Creed Origins takes a look at what came before the entire series. While Assassin’s Creed Origins predates every game so far it’s also the most advanced and diverse game yet.

Assassin’s Creed Origins takes place in the ever-fascinating setting of Egypt. Just a few weeks ago, a new secret chamber was discovered in the pyramids of Giza, showing just how much we still have to learn about these ancient historical sites which until know had just be theorised about. Ubisoft had done their homework though and are already built these chambers into the latest Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Ok, I digress. Beyond the incredibly fine details being nailed, Origins arguably delivers some of the most engaging storylines from the Assassin’s Creed series yet. You play the powerful yet surprisingly warm and caring assassin Bayek, tasked with protecting the ruler of Egypt. The great thing about Origins is that you’re not on rails. This frustrated the hell out of me playing Uncharted on the PS4; the feeling that you can’t get lost.

Origins Has a Huge Map

Now, this might be a personal thing, but the real sense of exploration is something that made me love the Fallout series. I had no idea that Assassin’s Creed had gone down the same route. The sheer size of the map is incredible. I’ve been playing for about 15 hours, the time it’s taken to complete Wolfenstein’s campaign, yet I’ve only made a small dent into Origins. It’s a huge map and the scenes are so beautiful that you’ll never want to power off.

The Gameplay

Beyond looking great, Origins has one of the best parkour and fighting systems of the Assassin’s Creed games that I’ve played so far. Some features, like the melee fight system, does leave a bit to be desired but there’s enough in Origins to keep the game fresh and not repetitive.

One pro tip I have is level up as you earn your new skills and abilities. It might seem so obvious but I didn’t pay attention to that early on and wondered why the game was so damn hard. The difficulty ramps up as your character grows so make your life easier and upgrade as you go.

Should I Play the Other Assassin’s Creed Games First?

Until now, missing one of the Assasin’s Creed games would have meant you missed out on quite a bit. The beauty of this entry to the series is that it’s an origins game, so it predates the lot. You’ll get more from the game if you understand some of the wider background but it’s not essential.

If you have no intention whatsoever of going back and playing the older games, here’s a roundup video on the vast majority of them all:

Verdict

I’d personally fallen out of sync with the series for a while but fell straight back in with Assassin’s Creed Origins. In the past, games like this have often felt repetitive but Origins is so beautiful and engaging that you won’t be able to stop playing.

You can pick up Assassin’s Creed Origins now from a range of stores, including:

Apple Fired an iPhone X Engineer After Daughter’s Video

0

The new Apple iPhone X is going to be pretty damn expensive. Actually, it’s going to be the most expensive iPhone of all time. It’s become an even pricier phone for Ken Bauer, an Apple engineer working on the iPhone X before launch. Apple gave Bauer the boot after his daughter, Brooke Amelia Peterson, videoed the still closely guarded iPhone X on a visit to Apple’s Cupertino HQ.

Apple Engineer’s Daughter Makes a Video

It’s a little ironic that Peterson opens this video by saying “I’m going shopping. Shopping solves all my problems”.

She started out shopping and ended up visiting her Dad at Apple’s One Infinite Loop Cupertino Campus. Here, she got the chance to get hands-on with Apple’s yet unreleased mega-flagship iPhone X. She removed the video from her own account, but of course, it’s still on the web:

https://youtu.be/RBeD8E2xxck?t=126

You’ll see they grab some pizza in Apple’s canteen and of course, Bauer pays with Apple Pay. Then while munching on some lovely looking Pizza, Peterson gets the chance to go hands on. She’s mightily impressed with the camera, tests out navigation without a home button, plays with animojis. Finally, she fawns about the area Ashton Kutcher shot the movie Jobs in, before saying “I almost want to become an engineer so that I could try and work at Apple.”

Well, unfortunately for Peterson, her chance of getting an existing employee referral into a position with Apple went up in smoke once she uploaded her hands-on video with the iPhone X. The video started to spread online. Remember, this is a still unreleased phone that’s had a limited amount of airtime to date. Peterson was asked by Apple to remove the video shortly after it was posted and she agreed, but the damage had been done. Just ask the lads of Ballyragget about how quickly videos go viral these days.

Apple’s Reaction to the Video

According to Peterson’s follow up video, Apple has let Bauer go. You can actually watch the follow-up video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQzGKwjr_js&t=16s

You’ll notice Peterson seems more concerned with her video being alongside Ellen Degeneres than Apple “doing what they had to do” in letting her Dad go. Ok, sure enough, her Dad should know a lot better than to let his daughter film an unreleased phone. Apple has very strict protocols governing on-site filming. Still, the innocence of recording an auld video isn’t lost on most, even the canteen staff who are delighted to see the footage of Apple Pay in motion being captured.

Eh…Priorities?

What’s shocking is Peterson’s reaction video. Christ, it’s cold. After a long intro about how great her Dad is, Peterson changes gears to support Apple in their decision to sack her pops. She genuinely seems delighted to be getting YouTube attention. Hell, even right now I’m giving her attention, which sucks.

Peterson claims this was just supposed to be a video of a fun memory with her family. Can people really be that naive? I suppose the Ballyragget boys thought they were creating a video of fun memories too right?

It’s been a great week for examples to showing everyone that we need to take what we post online very seriously. People can lose their dignity and their job from the wrong thing being posted online. We all need to weigh up funny, interesting and suitable before we publish. I remember reading a few years ago:

Don’t post anything you wouldn’t like to see on a billboard

That’s the internet these days. Anything you say or post today could be in front of millions tomorrow.

What Did We Learn from the Leaked iPhone X Video

With all that said, it would be silly of us not to make the most of this leak. We’ve learned a few bits about the latest iPhone. Further confirmation of how to say the name for a start. It’s the iPhone “ten” not the iPhone “ex”.

One of the big tests for the new iPhone will be unlocking with facial recognition. I’m really interested to see how this works because for Apple Pay, Apple’s Android Pay equivalent, could be tough to navigate without Touch ID. We only get a glance, but when used to cover the cost of a few pizzas, Apple Pay on the iPhone X seemed to handle just fine.

We also learned Apple is not afraid to crack down on the sources of leaks and that people will risk it all to seek attention. Whether that’s the attention of your children with some cool and forbidden tech, or putting your parent’s job on the line for the attention of the world.

End rant.

The Great Irish Podcast

0

Hands up if you remember the era of Irish pirate radio? Me neither but I heard it was a thing. Thankfully all things radio have moved into the year 2017. The humble podcast is so much more open due to the lack of restrictive regulations on the internet, for now anyway. Podcasting allows chat radio on its own terms, and it’s probably for that reason and that reason alone that we have some of the best podcasts around coming from our shores. While podcasting in itself is a relatively new concept around Ireland we are finding more top quality shows every day so we have decide to share with you a few of our favourite Irish podcasts to help you through those long morning commutes or evening dog walks:

Second Captains

Image may contain: 3 people, people smiling, people sitting and indoor

First off the mark is the Second Captains Podcast. Unlike all of the other podcasts this is actually created by a media production company in Dublin and they team previously produced and presented the Off The Ball show on Newstalk radio for eight years, winning a record nine PPI national radio awards. Psst they are also the guys behind the RTÉ 2 show by the same name.

Unsurprisingly these are the big boys of the Irish podcast scene, they go back as far as 2013 and they actually launched with the support of the Irish Times so as you would expect they quickly became the most popular podcast in Ireland, winning the iTunes podcast of the year in 2014. It remains Ireland’s most-listened to podcast.

If you haven’t guessed by the Off The Ball reference, this podcast has to do with everything sport, both on an Irish and International stage. Combining banter, sports and a keen interest they are everything you could ask for and more when looking to get the latest in sporting news. Oh and course due to their sheer size some of the guest speakers are legends of Irish sport, which is always great to hear their insights without the fear of retribution that standard radio would bring. So whether you want to know more about Katie Taylor’s upcoming fight or Ex Everton Legend Neville Southall speaking about his career in detail, these are your guys.

Those Conspiracy Guys

No automatic alt text available.

Now honestly I’m a bit biased writing this because this is a podcast both myself and Deano adore. Those Conspiracy Guys is exactly what it says on the tin, a weekly podcast based on all types and genres of conspiracy theories with just the right dash of Irish humour added to the mix. Want to know more about CIA assassinations, Bigfoot or the many behind the Boogeyman, than these are your guys.

“NO TOPIC IS TOO DELICATE OR OUTLANDISH (EXCEPT THE ONES WITH THE REALLY GOOD LAWYERS) AND WE WANT TO MAKE IT PALATABLE FOR EVERYONE FROM BEGINNERS TO EXPERTS.”

What I love about these guys is although the humour and banter is clearly obvious and great craic, it’s the knowledge and research that sets them apart. Dropping the tinfoil hat nonsense Gordo and the gang delve deep into the internet to bypass the crap and bring us real information on conspiracies that you have heard about and more that you haven’t. In their own words they run their ironclad bullshit detector over the range of misinformation that exists online and deliver the real information in a style that is both informative and fun in equal measures.

“WE ARE BUT A PAIR OF HUMBLE IRISHMEN WITH A PROPENSITY FOR CRITICAL THINKING AND COMMON SENSE, BUT WE ALSO HAVE AN THIRD EYE SQUINTED OPEN FOR THE STRANGENESS OF TRUTH.”

So if you ever have a curiosity about the stories around 911 or have ever watched the news thinking ” Hmm that doesn’t seem right to me” well then this is the podcast for you. Me and Dean have easily spent a drive from Limerick to Dublin listening to Those Conspiracy Guys. You won’t be disappointed.

Mindfully Fit

Again this is a biased opinion but with good reason. Paul Dermody, one half of this dynamic duo actually used to be a housemate of mine back in the ole college days. So when this lad talks about where he came from to where he is today it’s the gods honest truth, trust me I was right there with him. Eating waffles, talking football and half arsedly going to the gym between constant injury problems.

Nowadays Paul and Orlaith endeavor day in,day out to become the Gary Vee’s of the saturated Irish fitness scene. Whether it’s a nightly Q&A or Facebook Vlog the talented pair behind Mindfully Fit are the most approachable and honest people I have witnessed on the scene, cutting the crap and the look at me mentality of other fitness folk. Paul and Orlaith want to help you reach your maximum potential when it comes to real world fat loss and general health.

They regularly share helpful and valuable tips for better habits , mindsets along with real world strategies and principals to help you apply them to your life . With collaborations from world – class guests in their own fields. By they way apart from a full social media assault they are both personal trainers in Galway who offer face to face and online training.

The Irish Pubcast

What is more Irish than talking cobble in a pub? It’s probably the most Irish thing in the world to be fair. The Irish Pubcast is basically just that, Wayne Talbot, Ciaran Marcantonio and Darren Fahey are the brains behind this Dublin based podcast.

They record in a series of random pubs around Dublin City talking about a range of topics such as on pop-culture topics, including films, comics, horror and comedy. Mainly they talk geek, so if you’re into Comics, Game of Thrones or anything along these lines this could be the podcast for you. These guys have been doing this for years in 2011 and again in 2012 they won the award of “Best Comic-related/featured Podcast”. Just think of all the pints these guys have downed over the years. Can someone say best job ever?

An Irishman Abroad

Sure we couldn’t have an article on the best Irish podcast’s without mentioning An Irishman Abroad.Over the last few years this brilliant podcast has developed a bit of a cult following, mainly due to the host himself. Jarlath Regan is an Irish comedian living in London who has been on a number of comedy shows down the years, namely The Panel and The Rumour Room.

Over the last years Regan has placed himself as one of our most recognisable comedians and it was in 2013 An Irishman Abroad began. We Irish have been the biggest emigrants down the years, in fact as a nation we are known for moving away to pastures new. So each week we get a different Irish person speaking with him about their lives to give us an insight into the experiences of our people on their travels.

Guests down the years have included people like Dara Ó Briain and Sonia O’Sullivan, but the most interesting episodes for me are when the guests are successful but not particularly famous, but have a story to tell. To be honest it’s one of the most intriguing and entertaining podcasts I have listened too down the years.

But don’t take my word for it, Paul Campell of The Gaurdian after hearing the episode with Munster hero Jerry Flannery had this to say:

“every single young person reading this should go download this podcast and listen to it every week for the rest of time”.

Think that sums it up in a nutshell.

Grab the earbuds and get listening

So there you have it, the best and brightest of the Irish podcast scene in one handy list. It’s great that some of the most engaging online content available online is coming from people like you or I, it just makes things so much more accessible and understandable.

4 Reasons Using Google Pay Is Better Than Your Card

I recently moved my banking to KBC, an experience you might have even read about. Since I made the move, I’ve been loving KBC. It’s the simple things like logging into my banking app with a fingerprint or having customer care over web chat at 10 pm. Then, of course, there’s Google Pay.

Many believe being able to pay for items with your phone through Google and Apple Pay is little more than a novelty. Yet, since I’ve moved my banking to KBC, I’ve probably used my card in-store three or four times. My phone has taken over the tapping. The really interesting thing is that I’m using my phone because it’s generally handier than my card. Here are four reasons why I’m using my Google Pay on my phone to pay for things now instead of my card.

You’ll Actually Know the Scandalous Price of a Pint

How often do you hand over your card to a barman before he wanders off into the distance only to return with your drink paid for. You’ve never seen the card machine and you’ve no idea what you just paid. You could insist he bring the machine over, but to be fair, the place is jammers so that’s not sound.

I’ve noticed that I’m more conscious of what I’m paying for the likes of a pint because it pops up on my screen. Tapping your card left, right and centre can often leave you feeling like you’re not really spending money. Google pay gives you a nice visual reminder of what that pint just set you back.

Tap as Often as you Like

Off the bat, this will sound like a first world problem but every now and then, the card machine beeps after you tap your card and asks for a PIN number. Now this varies from mild inconvenience with most banks to outright embarrassment if you’re with Permanent TSB. Their wireless cards get fully declined after you’ve tapped three times. Yes, declined as if the money isn’t in your account. Morto.

Once you activate Google Pay on your phone you’ll be forced to set up a screen lock. In order to pay using your smartphone in a shop, just tap it against the card machine. Items cost more than €30? No worries, you’ll just need to unlock your phone, either with a PIN or fingerprint.

If you’ve paid a few times without unlocking your phone, Google Pay will ask you to verify your identity through pin code or fingerprint. There are also some older card machines that won’t let you pay for items over €30 with Google Pay.

You’ll Always Have Your Phone on You

I had Google Pay for a whole day before I went to the shop and forgot my wallet. The intimidating thing was even though I’d set up Google Pay, I’d never used it before. I was terrified it wouldn’t work. Sure enough, while I hesitated a little in tapping my phone off the terminal, the payment went straight through – much to the amusement of one gentleman in the queue who was blown away by what he just saw.

If I needed to lend my card to someone or forgot it, I wouldn’t even notice because now I depend on my phone more than my card.

Once Upon a Time Contactless Was Weird

I still remember when contactless cards first came out. Shopkeepers would stand there with a vacant look on their face because I wanted to tap my card. Then they’d think you’re thick for trying to tap followed by shock when it worked. Everyone was worried about the security side of things and actually, that’s why I got myself a Secrid Wallet. Still, contactless payments became so normal and go on, be honest, a little part of you is angry when you have to type in your pin now, right?

That first time I used my phone to pay after forgetting my wallet the biggest surprise I got was the shopkeeper. He saw the phone in my hand and without even asking, he reached for the card machine. Straight away, he knew I wanted to pay with my phone. This tells me, it’s faster for shops as they’re predicting users using the system, but also that there are quite a few people using Google Pay now.4 reasons android pay is better than contactless cards no grad

Right now, the biggest barrier to people using Google and Apple Pay is the bank they’re with. KBC and Ulster Bank and AID offer both services. The nations biggest bank, Bank of Ireland, along with Permanent TSB don’t offer any of these services so if you want to change how you pay for things, make the move.

WhatsApp Business: Because You Need More Chat Groups

0

We do love a good leak here at Goos3D and well wouldn’t you know we have gone and found another one. Yurt! WhatsApp Business has been leaked, giving us a good look at how the latest from the Facebook-owned company is going to work. Better again this leak explains the differences between both, WhatsApp for Business and regular WhatsApp.

Image result for whatsapp business

The app is called WhatsApp Business on the Google Play Store and will be separate from the normal WhatsApp app. They even changed the logo ever so slightly by sticking a B inside the bubble. Quick side note, we have only seen this stuff from the online links. The app is in beta testing and is limited to a private group of testers. Unless you have the APK- which we may or may not have hidden somewhere before the end of this article.

Can you spot the difference?

The new app was officially announced about a month ago but according to the leak, WhatsApp actually had a survey to enrol potential SMB’s to test the platform prior to its release. These chosen companies have then been asked to give feedback on pretty much everything from new features like automatic responses, message analytics to basic functionality like account setup and the migration of data from regular WhatsApp.

Here is what we have managed to find out so far:

Business Profiles

WhatsApp Business will be coming with a range of new features such as chat migration (which I will talk about later), auto response, analytics as well as a personalized business profile.

From what we gather you set up your business profile within the initial setup. The app itself will ask you things like ‘Business Description’, ‘Website’, ‘Address’ and other business related nonsense I know nothing about. Interestingly enough for those with their fingers in many pies, you can add more than one website to each profile and you can even have more than one account.

I spent a bit of time thinking about this and I can only think of personal and business as being a user’s two accounts unless you want to set up a complete business profile just for your local Junior Football Club.

More than one account? Sure go on then

What is really interesting about this WhatsApp Business leak is this option for “chat migration”. They have thought through pretty much any likely scenario your standard business owner may require such as using one phone and one app, using one phone and two apps where WhatsApp Business uses different mobile number, one phone and two apps where WhatsApp Business uses different landline number. My poor head that was a lot of thinking!

If you want to use the normal app and business app at the same time on the same phone, the only stipulation is that the number on both apps is separate from each other. Or you can migrate your personal account into a business account, or just use your landline number. The range of options here is quite handy, sure just check out this nifty little how-to graphic we found online:

Seems simple enough and as we said you can even use a landline number, which is handy as hell if you want to keep your personal and business accounts apart. This also upgrades the landlines to support multimedia messages using the business app without the need to actually do anything. Ya landline multi-media messaging just sounds really wrong, but oh so right.

Analytics

Do you know what business people love and no matter how much you give, they always want more? Data analytics. WhatsApp clearly knew this about their audience and while this feature seems to be still a work in progress, business owners will be able to view and send reports around a number of messages sent vs received and all of that jazz. Why this is relevant or important I’m not overly sure, but it’s there and business folk love that shit so whatever floats your boat I say.

Out of Office goes Mobile

The best part of any office job is that moment when you finally set up your out of office and get ready to strut out of that place completely forgetting you will be back in a week. But that is not the point why not go a step further with your WhatsApp Business profile and set up a couple of auto-responses which will act as your mobile version of out of office.

You just know a client, a customer or some numpty is going to contact you outside of business hours and having that access at your fingertips could mean never truly leaving work. You can customise the text in the ‘Away Messages’ along with any predefined schedule for the number of days. I’m willing to go out on a limb here and let the funniest message become the official Goos3D auto response- so far I’m thinking

“The PlayStation got me before you did, good luck and goodbye”

Let us know if you can do better in the comments below.

Essentially WhatsApp Business is going to be exactly what it says on the tin. The exact same app but with a business focus. By the time a full version is released we are likely to see a payment system in place, which will be interesting to see how that works out from an encryption point of view.If you run a business and wish to sign up for WhatsApp Business, you need to fill up this survey, and then download the app from here.

More WhatsApp groups. Awesome.
