Think about the ultimate gangster movie and what the perfect cast would look like. Well, it looks like it might be about to happen. Martin Scorsese is set to direct The Irishman. This is a Netflix funded movie assembling the dream team. Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel. Those names feature in the all-star flick based on the Charles Brandt book – “I Heard You Paint Houses.”
Holy donkey sh**balls!
Yes, we’re excited. Some of us in Goos3D Tower are starting to think that Netflix is eyeballing an Oscar in the next couple of years. It should be easy when you’re combining talent from iconic crime films such as The Godfather, Casino, Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction. Funding a movie based on an Irish gangster story with this kind of cast just screams “pick me, pick me.”
Make him an offer he can’t refuse
Unfortunately, there have been a few snags. It seems like the big ole wad of cash Netflix has was just too hard to turn down for Mexican producer Gaston Pavlovich. The rumoured budget for The Irishman is a whopping $125 million. There’s so much money involved it even made him forget that he signed a distribution deal with STX Entertainment. They paid $50 million at Cannes last year for the non-US distribution rights.
So obviously since the guys in Netflix have got involved one would assume the original contractor would be a tad miffed? You’d be right. Horses heads could end up in beds yet.
Anyway back to the actual movie. Once everything gets ironed out, here’s what you’ll need to know. The screen writer is Schindler’s List’s Steve Zaillian. The movie depicts the death of ex-Crime boss Jimmy Hoffa, played by Al Pacino. Frank Sheeran AKA The Irishman AKA De Niro tell the story from his deathbed. So expect a pile of flashbacks and the serious use of tech to make De Niro looks thirty years younger.
Touted to for a 2018 we’re already counting down the days for this one. Looks like Netflix finally could have itself and Oscar contender.
